Fantasy managers face an anxious wait after reports on Tuesday evening stated that Robin Van Persie was subbed off at half-time in Holland’s World Cup Qualifier due to a thigh knock. The Man United striker was replaced by Klaas-Jan Huntelaar for the second half of the 4-1 win over Hungary.

The Daily Mail were amongst the first news sources to report on the potential injury and they offer up a much tweeted quote from Dutch coach Louis van Gaal which, if confirmed, offers some reassurance on the extent of the problem…

“We took off Robin for precautionary measures. It doesn’t seem to be too serious, but you never know. We didn’t want to take any risks.”

Reports elsewhere are scarce at the time of writing, although the official site of the Dutch FA state that Van Persie did sustain a thigh injury and the BBC are also running a report. United have also recently picked up the news in their round-up of tonight’s international action…

“While Welbeck looked in good shape, the fitness of a fellow United forward could be a concern at Carrington as the Reds prepare for Saturday’s return to league action. Robin van Persie was substituted at half-time as the Netherlands won 4-1 in Hungary on Tuesday night, although quotes attributed to his national coach Louis van Gaal suggest the withdrawal was just a precautionary measure.”

With Shinji Kagawa missing Japan’s match with Iraq earlier on today due to a back problem, Sir Alex Ferguson may be facing an up-front headache for Saturday’s game with Wigan. Van Persie’s sensational form, which has harvested four goals in two starts since moving to Old Trafford, was set to make him an overwhelming armband candidate for Gameweek 4. Huge numbers have acquired his services across the Fantasy games in preparation for the Latics’ visit – they will be amongst many now hoping that the reported quotes are correct and that Van Persie’s withdrawal was no more than precautionary.

We’ll doubtless have more on this in the next 24-hours with Van Persie likely to undergo a full assessment back at Old Trafford.

It's possible that a confirmed injury that would keep RVP out for a few games (I realise this looks extremely unlikely) would actually benefit me. It would force me to play my wildcard at which point I can bring in all the players I don't have who keep scoring (Michu, Hazard, etc.) Managing to hold onto my wildcard (just) but that would tip me over the edge...

If only there were a nicely written article to help me 😉

I don't really want to wildcard but I've taken hits this week which is incredibly out of character for me and it's made me edgy!

It's served you well, there's no doubt it can work but I'm in unfamilar territory and it scares me! I only took one hit all last season which was a disaster (Hernandez and Nani in for a -4 for the plum home fixture against Norwich. Shocking!)

Ah. The fear factor. You have to have a hit that works over three to four games. And you have to remember to keep your defence ticking over.

I've considered writing a piece on taking hits - pro's, con's, how to assess the success of a hit, etc. but it's quite an undertaking - particularly judging success or otherwise, there are so many factors to take into consideration. I'll hopefully get round to it eventually...

I'd call my hit last week very successful 🙂

But would you still call it successful if RVP doesn't play this week and Torres and N'Zogbia both get hattricks?

This is what I mean about it being tricky to judge success - you're happy because the hit 'paid off' after 1 week. Fair enough, but if after 2 weeks you're worse off than if you'd played no transfers what then?

Hits should be judged long term but people only usually do this when there hasn't been an instant reward - they say something like "Yeah, but I prefer my team now anyway and it will get more points over the next 4 weeks" which again, is fine but there's some sort of psychology at play which makes people determined to judge their decisions as wise and they'll choose whichever set of data backs them up.

It's complicated and I can't make my mind up what I think about hits!

    How’s this UCL team guys?

Think Cech will concede against Juve. I'd get a cheaper GK to rotate.

Is Ozil a rotation risk with Modric? Modric started over him last match and came on late in the 2nd half I think. Not sure about Evra, but United do have a piss easy group.

Cech could actually see at least one goalless draw...I don´t think 'firepower' when I think of Juve...but I do see at least a peppering of classy counters and at least one instance of John Terry tripping over a blade of grass.

    BEN DAVIES

Right, a lot's been said about the pitfalls of buying into him. These are as follows:

    1) Lack of Gametime - We've all seen the quotes. We all know about he competition.

2)Swans defensive qualities - Now under question with Tate. When Chico returns, Tiendalli will be close to fitness.

    3) Let's face it, most will have a Swans def / Vorm. It's pretty galling to see a 4.0 contender for a slot that may not be worth 5.0 and up currently.

Now of course, he will not play every game, but we have no idea how this will pan out. There are cup games to consider and no sanem manaager would want a 19 yr old to feel the pressures of being the only recognised specialist.

To coin an ugly phrase, Davies has the DNA of a swan. He went well in preseason and his youth / inexperience is the only thing stopping him from being 1st choice. He is 19, that's a year younger than Phil Jones. Clyne, Gibbs, Rodwell, Baker, Jenkinson are all 19-22.

Even Naylor, who was 100% 1st choice, is only 22 and played 30 championship games aged 20.

Now clearly, there are risks, big ones. These are somewhat mitigated by his basement price. Do you think that it mayb e worth it as a 5th mid (instead of Clyne et al)? What about a fourth in conjuction with another cheapie (egMcCartney)?

Sorry for the long post, but I thought it would be good to get a consenus idea. Thanks.

        Yup, Betrand's 23 - raring to go!

I'm still not sold, just cos of the standard of his competition at Chelsea.

There's probably only room for 1 of these crazy punts - Jenks, Bertie, Davies - It's to tempting to avoid ALL of them.

It depends how the rest of your defence is set up I suppose. If you could cope with Davies turning out to be a non-playing asset then it's low risk and the rewards could be very nice. If you'd be relying on him to play regularly then it's too risky for me.

Well that just it. I've got no SWA defs currently. Always planned to buy in about now, but with Naylor out...

If I went the 2x 4.0 route, he'd be a strong contender, I think. I would probably not feel comfortable with that long term, and would be looking to free up funds to upgrade one at around gw9.

Who's your defensive cheap punt? Or is that just something you never try?

I go back and forth on this. I'd rather not have 4.0m deadwood in my WC team that I have to waste a transfer getting out. On the other hand, at this point in the season, it's not unthinkable to have a non-player you never use. And if he turns out to get regular gametime and his price rises, then it's a bonus.

If Man U are 2 goals up, I can't see rvp lasting more than 50 or 60 min though.

Seriously considering transferring in and captaining Nani.

I'm pretty damn sure he'll start this week as Welbeck isn't very good on the wing, Young is out, I personally think Kagawa will miss this week and then you have the RVP situation.

Plus he looked menacing for the last 20 vs. Southampton and apparently had a decent game last night.

Anybody else want to join me?

I've got a big urge to get Valencia this week against his old club but I don't think there's room ... I think Nani is a bit too much for me!

Dunno - I thnk there'd be minimal difference over the long term so I suppose worth the savings... the top 50 defenders score pretty similar totals come the end of the season and I'd expect both of these guys to be in amongst that list...

I'm taking the risk and thinking that RVP will play and do as well as he has.

    Team for the week:

    Foster
    Williams, Cahill, Jenkinson
    Routledge, Carzola(C), Hazard, Michu
    Tevez, RVP, Fletcher

    BENCH: Jaaskelainen, Demel, Snodgrass, Reid

Either that or downgrading cahill and fletcher to bring in ben arfa, rafael

    What do you think?

    Cheers lads.

    Either
