Stoke City added to their options up front last week with the intriguing acquisition of Michael Owen. The free agent arrives at the Britannia on a one-year deal, following his release from Manchester United this summer and is the seventh signing of what has been a busy summer for Potters’ boss Tony Pulis:

Upon completion of the deal, Owen admitted he was keen to strike up a partnership with Peter Crouch up front but, with the likes of Jon Walters, Kenwyne Jones and Cameron Jerome all in contention, he admitted he expects a battle on his hands:

I know a couple of lads here from past experience, be that with England or different clubs. Peter is one of them. He has done fantastically well since he joined Stoke, but there are many strikers at the club so I am not expecting it to be an easy ride. I will have to work to play any part and I am prepared to do that. There are a lot of top players at the club. I am just going to hopefully fit in well with the squad and have a good season.

The Statistics

It was way back in 1996-97 that Owen first sprung onto the domestic scene. Scoring on his debut for Liverpool against Wimbledon, his spell on Merseyside lasted a further seven seasons, with 216 league appearances harvesting 118 goals. Tempted to Spain by Real Madrid, he produced 14 goals from just 20 starts (and 16 sub appearances) for the La Liga giants before Newcastle paid £16.8m for his services in August 2005.

Then the injuries kicked in. Owen managed just 14 appearances in his first two seasons on Tyneside, with thigh, foot and knee problems all significantly curtailing his game time dramatically. His final couple of campaigns continued to be plagued with injury, with Owen managing 19 goals from 57 league matches before leaving the club as a free agent in July 2009. The striker’s time at United was again limited by injury, with hamstring and thigh problems scuppering his chances – Owen started just six league matches over three seasons under Sir Alex Ferguson. Over a total of 31 appearances, he scored five times before, once again, becoming a free agent in the summer.

The Prospects

Let’s face it – with that injury history, most of us will be expecting Owen to struggle for any sort of game time. The assumption that niggles and strains will get the better of him seems a fair one but if (and it’s admittedly a big “if”) he can stay fit and injury-free, his prospects may not be as bad as many fear.

Certainly, it’s a notion that Crouch has already entertained. The duo’s partnership produced a goal a game over 16 starts together for England and the former Spurs man reckons it could thrive once again:

The fact we’re so different is a strength – it’s the old Little and Large act. Whenever I’ve played with that sort of striker – Jermain Defoe, Kevin Phillips or Michael – it’s always gone well. He was in on Thursday for his first day of training and I have to admit he looked very sharp for someone who has been out for so long.

Any potential pitch time for Owen is bound to impact on Jonathan Walters the most. The latter, however, was the only player to start every league match last season under Pulis – a sign of his manager’s faith. Walters could move to the flank if Owen was selected up top, though, a situation which could see him vie for a flank role along with Matt Etherington on the left. It may well be Walters and Crouch continue up top, with Owen initially afforded the role of impact sub late on in games as Pulis looks to build the new boy’s match-fitness.

At 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 6.6 in the Sky Sports game, Owen is certainly far cheaper than Crouch (6.5 and 8.8 respectively) and his presence up top would certainly dent Walters’ appeal as an out-of-position midfielder in the FPL game. With (MCY, che, SWA, liv, mun) to follow in the next five Gameweeks, though, the Potters are set to be given a wide berth until the fixture list improves – by then, we may get a little more indication of whether it’s the first-team or treatment room for Owen once again.

My original plan, but is there genuinely no one below 8.6 that will outscore Kags by 4. Bear in mind Kags may well get 0 and I'll get a 2pter off the bench.

I don't believe in head to heads in general as a justification. More based on his positioning being more advanced than I expected in a team that's great going forward. His position may well be more advanced because Aguero is out. Additionally, he's simply very good at attacking when he is told to. Quality does come into it. He has a knack for scoring in the toughest games.

Ok so thinking & I recall it was about this time last season that RVP got me right back up the ranking as everyone jumped on Dzeko & Rooney/Young due to their barnstorming start, I picked up the Dutchman for 11.9 before his great run. Now more then likely it's going to happen again, the question is can u catch that player, that maybe no1 is thinking about due to a poor start, before they're about to take off.

    Any thoughts on possible candidates?

    Mata?

You're looking for what everyone wants but it isn't Mata, stay well clear! Hazard has pushed him deeper into a linkup passing role, further from the goal.

For me the obvious ones are Cazorla, Jelavic, Ade, Bale. But latter two have been buggered by AVB. Torres possibly.

Leftfield picks. Kone, Morrison, Nolan, Giroud, Oscar, Ben Arfa (maybe too popular)

Seems to be the concensus with Juan.

I like Jelavic, with my plan to bring him in for.... wait for it.... RVP next GW.

Cazorla & HBA on the radar so not sure they qualify. Torres may be the punt. Kun when he gets back ahead of Tevez would be ballsy.

Ballsy! The problem with Torres isn't his form IMO, it's his service and whether Chelsea commit to attacking. They parked the bus against Wigan for crying out loud.

I missed one out. Fletcher. Absolutely massive and my #1 priority I can't get in right now.

          Johnson good too.

Great call I think. Would def be a option & real differential. I don't have Baines or Caz so am lacking real Captaincy options with the RVP doubt. Looking at Haz or Tevez or Bale as a differential.

I generally avoid captaining differentials, but I also don't have Cazorla so it's between Tevez / Baines for me. I wouldn't captain Hazard.

Interesting Pepin. Don't see much for Hazard? But I would think the Stoke v MCI match would be quite low scoring, hence not much in it for Tevez.

Any advice would be much appreciated as always.

On a wildcard, playing Baines every week and decided on Gorkks and Davies as my cheap home/away rotating pair, but the next 2 are either (with a 9.5 budget):

    A) S Taylor & Cuellar (rotate home and away)
    B) Ridgewell and Clark (rotate home and away)

    A) gives a more solid defensive pairing teamwise but Castle in a bit of an injury crisis while B) may be a tad less solid but offer more attacking threat, all imo of course. Bearing in mind I will be playing the Homer every week along with Baines and the (swans/reading) Homer, which do you think is better, A or B?

    Morning all.

I am wondering if this is worth a wildcard?

    Now-
    Jussi /Ruddy
    Cole/ Ceullular/ Lescott/ Clyne/ Hangeland
    Hazard/ Kagawa/ Noble/ Michu/ Guthrie
    Tevez/ RVP/ Graham

    Cole to Santon
    Kagawa to Cazorla
    Noble to Cleverly
    Graham to Fletcher
Already done Bale to Hazard this week

    Would give me-
    Jussi/ Ruddy
    Lescott/ Santon/ Cuelular/ Clyne/ Hangeland
    Hazard/ Cazorla/ Cleverly/ Michu/ Guthrie
    Tevez/ RVP/ Fletcher

    Worth a WC?

I think ppg he was better. His assists were lower than usual in his 40 goal season otherwise he would have cracked 300. Btw u can add Gerrard of old to the "essential" pile. Though I don't know that anyone's ever been essential season long. Price is a factor ppg, pp$ and mins

Hey Mate. NA is trying to build a team around Le lallana and is playing 4-3-3 so that he can play more centrally (last season he was on the left in a standard 4-4-2). Trouble is We dont really have the players to play 4-3-3 which is why Puncheon was being played as he has pace. Puncheon was loaned out all last season and was nearly sold on a couple of occasions. Add to this NA has recently bought Ramirez and Mayuka (both of whom have pace) and I expect Puncheon to be on the bench more often than not. In short avoid.

Ok so was all set to bring in Hazard this GW, however with the recent issues to RVP I'm left without a strong (c) option (Haz/Tevez/Bale). My question is, is it worth transferring in Santi (c) instead of Hazard to give me that solid option?

QPR away not the best of options I don't think. Def not as good as a fit RVP home to WIG or Santi @ home to SOU.

Had Bale from the start, to be clear I have not got Hazard, was going to use my FT to get him in for Nasri. Can get Caz instead & hand him the armband.

If I were you, I'd get Santi in for Bale this GW and (c) him. That's sort of short-sighted, though, as both Bale and Hazard have better fixtures.

That said, Santi has been pretty important for Arsenal so he may do well even in the next two tough fixtures after SOT.

So Santi for Bale ahead of Santi for Nasri? Surely Bale has preference to Nasri?

It's basically Nasri out, Hazard or Santi in & (c).

If you can afford that, definitely that's the way to go. Nasri out and Santi in. Bale has 3 more good GWs to come good.

Not really sure tbh. It's a real tough one. But Santi's involvement in the Arsenal attack is far more compared to that of Hazard in Chelsea's.
And I maybe 110% wrong, but I have a sneaky feeling Hazard may not get much gametime this weekend, with two 90 min shifts in midweek and Juve to come next week.

    My defence line:

    Vorm Federici
    Ivanovic Zabaleta Hangeland Demel Clyne

Would like to transfer Zabaleta out for Ridgewell/McAuley/Boyce but neither WBA nor WIG rotates well with my other defenders. Ideas? Rotation options are Cuellar, STO, Clark and Gorkss.

and yea, I'd eventually do Ivanovic > Baines on GW6/8.

    Cheers!

Personally I think Terry will do everything he can to play....he'll see it as an oppotunity to directly off load some of the anger and frustration he no doubt has over the case.

The only way I dont see Terry not playing is if RDM sees this and doesnt want him playing....

    Morning ppl! 😀 Thoughts welcome.
    1) Is Siggy an advanced role for Spurs?? I know Bale is but haven't seen any of the Spurs' matches.

    2) With doubts on RVP's fitness, is it better to go with Ade as the replacement?? So that i can get another big hitter in midfield..

I'm on a WC and my front 8 look like this:
    Hazard Nolan Michu Carzola xxxx
    Pog RVP Tevez

I really belive that the 3 forward spots are too valuable to have a benchwarmer. you can easily have 2 cheap defenders and one Guthrie type mid to bench warm and then get a 3rd striker along the Fletcher/ Lamber/ Graham price bracket

Most ppl think that way SAB. But playing 5 hitters in mid. Two monster strikers and Pog who is Reading's main man makes it more tempting to me. My feeling is that roughly 70% of the Reading goals might be scored by Pog and i expect goals from them

Its difficult to assess the spurs midfield.....Siggy hasnt got much game time and has been subbed off twice so that suggests AVB isnt such a fan. Agree with SAB that you need to then factor in Clints and Dembeles arrival, theyve also resigned lennon (who has had alot of game time under AVB) and then you have Bale whi is nailed on!?

Not sure how the budgets work but getting rid of Pog for Ade and then another midfielder could be an intresting differential and you'd have a pretty explosive front 3....
