Jermain Defoe is at the double as Spurs register their first win under Andre Villas-Boas at the fourth attempt. Gareth Bale opens his account for the season in a 3-1 win at the Madejski, though the visitors’ clean sheet is ruined late on thanks to a strike from Hal Robson-Kanu…

Jermain Defoe
A fourth start of the season saw the striker score twice to earn the points for Spurs. In spite of Tottenham’s toils, Defoe has now provided three goals and an assist for his Fantasy owners and is the top scoring Spurs player in FPL with 22 points; his strong start looks to have kept him in pole position for the lone forward role right now, with Emmanuel Adebayor left to warm the bench. Many had expected Adebayor to automatically be installed into the first XI as soon as his fitness is fine but, at the moment, it seems like the spot is Defoe’s to lose – with four home games in the next six, including (QPR, AVL, WIG) he could well be set to plunder the points once again.

Spurs Midfield
Having drawn blanks in each of his first three Gameweeks, Gareth Bale had been sold in huge numbers across the Fantasy games. To date, the Welshman has been transferred out by 185,000 FPL managers and dropped 0.2 in price already but his goal against Reading proved a bitter blow to those who chose to ship him out. While Gylfi Sigurdsson continues to struggle and with Clint Dempsey earning game time from the bench, Bale is currently the only one of Spurs’ highly-priced midfield trio looking capable of producing during the above-mentioned run of fixtures.

Aaron Lennon picked up his second assist of the season yet continues to fly under the radar, with less than 4% ownership. His acquisition could appeal to those who fancy a punt on Spurs but are not quite willing to spend over the odds – at 7.0 in FPL to Bale’s 9.3, for example, he’s been the better value so far. Moussa Dembele was handed his first start and looks to have immediately settled alongside Sandro in the double-pivot. While many were hoping for a more attacking role, it seems the Belgian will be tasked with his share of defensive duties in the current 4-2-3-1.

Benoit Assou-Ekotto
The Cameroon international could be set for a shprt-term spell on the sidelines, according to Villas-Boas…

“Benoit has a small fragment in his knee that makes it swell a lot. He has played through pain in the last couple of games. His knee may have to be washed out and if that happens we are looking at a four-week absence.”

If Assou-Ekotto is indeed sidelined, Kyle Naughton looks set to benefit. The youngster filled in at left-back yesterday and offers a cut-price route into the Tottenham defence – priced at 4.5 in the Sky Sports game and 4.4 in FPL (compared to Kyle Walker’s 6.5 in the latter game) he could be a real differential at the back for those willing to take a real punt.

Reading Tactics
Brian McDermott once again rolled out a 4-4-1-1, with Danny Guthrie tucked in behind lone frontman Pavel Pogrebnyak. With his side a goal down at half-time, however, the Reading boss tinkered with his formation – a move to 4-4-2 saw Guthrie drop deeper into the midfield four as Adam Le Fondre climbed off the bench to partner the Russian up top. Le Fondre’s introduction cancelled out the Spurs clean sheet late on, after he teed up Hal Robson-Kanu for a consolation. While Guthrie’s starting role in “the hole” adds to his appeal, it’s clear that McDermott is willing to change his position when chasing games – a position Reading are finding themselves in frequently right now.

Adam Federici & Alex McCarthy
Declared fit and available by Reading after pulling out of the Australian squad in the week, Brian McDermott revealed post-match that Adam Federici was in fact still being troubled by a knee problem. Subsequently dropped in favour of Alex McCarthy in yesterday’s match, the Reading boss has revealed that Federici will also miss the trip to West Brom next weekend before he can return to compete with McCarthy for the number one jersey.

“I decided to make a change and put Alex in, it was a tactical decision but Adam has also got an issue with his knee so we need to have a real good look at that and get it sorted. He could be out for a little while, he has to recuperate and when he comes back he’ll be challenging for that position…He certainly won’t be playing at West Brom, like I said I don’t know how long it will be, it’ll be a while”

The Federici-David De Gea combination was a popular one at the start of the season but the duo have failed to feature over the past two Gameweeks – a hugely frustrating situation which is currently being addressed, judging by the transfers in so far. Meanwhile, Alex McCarthy has emerged as a potential new budget candidate. Currently there are no active 4.0 keepers in the FPL – McCarthy is the first to make a full appearance this season and, if he can cement a run of starts, he could offer those seeking to free up funds a new route.

So do people really favour Podolski?

I have him and I'm still not sure, granted it was a pretty sweet free kick but he's not looked amazingly threatening in open play. Thoughts?

REPOST: Thinking a little ahead here to GW 7 so I can plan my transfers till about then. Would you rather do: (next three fixtures in parantheses)

    A) Kagawa (new/STO/che) + Graham (RDG/WIG/mci) > Pienaar (wig/qpr/LIV) + Podolski (whu/nor/QPR)
    B) Kagawa (new/STO/che) + Ben Arfa (MUN/sun/WBA) > Pienaar (wig/qpr/LIV) + Cazorla (whu/nor/QPR)

Please don’t say “you’re planning too far ahead”. I need to structure my team, hence the question. Thanks in advance you lot.

I've always thought he was a top top keeper. Glad to see him getting his chance.

I wouldn't put any faith in him to keep his spot though. You know what it's like with these back up keepers. One bad performance and it's back to being number 2.

Clark will become a rotation risk once Dunne comes back anyway.

Anyone go with the strategy of picking the cheapest defensive option at the club who is a regular starter?

For instance between Jask and Demel I would go O'brien or Demel as it allows me to get w ham def coverage for 0/4/0.5 cheaper

Another example is I would go for the likes of cuellar over Mignelot as he is 0.5 cheaper.

Barnett is another example for Norwich over Ruddy, R Martin and Garrido.

Sure they may offer less goal threat, possibly less potential for bonus but they cover the defences and would offer same clean sheet potential as more expensive players.

This strategy really only works for defensive coverage but does anyone else go with this thinking?

I did that this time with my defence and keepers, but I made an exception for Jaaskelainen on my WC. I've always rated him, especially for save points. He's a beast at that.

Other wise Gunter/Gorkks, Demel, Cuellar, Hughes are all lovely picks.

well he offers the same cs potential and is 1.6m cheaper. You are relying on baines for goals and assists

You could use the 1.5m to upgrade to a player elsewhere in your midfield or strikeforce who will get you those goals and asssits. Hibbert and upgraded midfielder better than baines imo

          I agree to some extent.

          Baines/Morrison

          beats

          Hibbert/BenArfa

Hibbert is not nailed on. Neville fills in at RB occasionally if I'm not wrong. Baines is honestly an exception to the rule, cause no other defender really takes PKs, CKs and FKs on a regular basis.

I try to do the same, as long as the cheaper player is nailed on to start every week. That said, it rather hurt me last season when i had N.Taylor and not Vorm, with Vorm getting save points and penna saves and thus clearly outperforming.

the other case where it doesnt work is if a player is clearly a better attacking threat...e.g. If i was buying an Arsenal defender i'd prob want Vermalen (maybe Gibbs) rather than anyone else. Same with Baines. This is prob where i've changed my thinking over last few seasons.

1,1 in the bank and want to upgrade Graham!

    A) Berbatov - any rotation risk? Is the Fulham team strong enough to provide him with enough opportunities?

    B) Fletcher - Sunderland is stronger than Fulham imo, but I don't fancy Fletcher to get 140 points even as a regular?

    C) Lukaku - I think he is a brilliant youngster that is going to be the new Drogba! West Brom fixture looks nice and now as Odemwingie is ruled out for 3 games this is an excellent opportunity for Lukaku to claim his starting 11 pos..!

Looking for a new defender to replace Jenk:
Naughton- pros: best team for that money, cons: temporary
Nelsen- pros: cheap, cons: could be a rotation risk

    Any other options?

Michu owners (that'd be everyone, right?)

What's the feeling - time to move on (was always a fad) or sitting tight til the reading & Wigan home games are done ........ or something else?

Sticking. He shows Gylfi-like statistics - and it would have been wrong to get rid of him after one non-productive week.

Is it right time for Michu and Yaya out.
I can have epic midfield like: Hazard, Cazorla, Bale, Ben Arfa
    ?

I am keeping hold of Michu for a little longer, but I am seriously considering letting Yaya go. Some folk seem to think he may be pushed deeper with Kun back, but I've not seen anything yet to back that up. Yaya > HBA looks so tempting though (see below)

Afternoon all, first time I've jumped on today so a bit behind with the latest on here. Current team for GW5 looks like this:

    Jussi (Beg)
    Ivan Ridge Rafael (Cuellar Gunter)
    Michu Hazard Yaya Ahmadi (Noble)
    RVP Tevez Pod
    (+0.7m)

Would dearly like to find a place in my team for HBA this week but Yaya is the only replacement option without a hit (don't want to bin Hazard or Michu). Any suggestions?

If andy Johnson is out for the season does anyone fancy Jamie mackie to get more game time! Only 5.3 he always looks dangerous and got an assist for Scotland v macedonia

I’ve got Adebayor and want someone to replace him with. Who’s best?

    Defoe?
    Berbatov?
    Fletcher?
(not getting Crouch because of fixtures).

defoe could get replaced by ade after one bad game..Berba like fulham will be home scorers only. Fletcher is a good option. Cisse and Ba have been quiet so far..Could explode on to the scene with a match at home to norwich this week

Pretty good, although I'd consider Demel over Vidic. Man Utd have a poor record in the league at Anfield (no wins in last four and a 8-3 goal ratio in favour of Liverpool). Rest is good. Very good side for next week and kudos for sticking with Bale...indeed he is the best captaincy for the week...Nolan as vc perhaps?

thanks..Ive been addicted to this game for years but cant believe ive only just discovered this glorious website! As a united fan, i usually go with heart over head on these things..Perhaps united are due a CS at Anfield and West Ham are due to concede one..Flawed logic i know..It has cost me so far..Rooney was my capt gw2, Bale gw3, and Van Persie GW4, all got 1 point 🙁 If I go back to Bale, the rest of you should cash in on RVP!
