Following on from last week’s debut, it’s time to turn focus to the latest line of injuries with Dan Agger’s leg injury, Samir Nasri’s hamstring and Stephen Ireland’s arm all taking place on my virtual treatment table. I’ll also take time to assess those already under treatment, with Bacary Sagna and Jack Wilshere closing in on a return to action…

New Arrivals

Daniel Agger
The injury to Daniel Agger occurred as the Dane and team-mate Glen Johnson both attempted to thwart the gazelle-like advances of United’s Antonio Valencia, who swiftly and elusively skips between the pair, leaving the two Liverpool players on collision course. Agger, with left leg at full stretch slides in, just as Johnson bears down with his own challenge, connecting with Agger’s knee, just below the joint line with what can be described as a “valgus force”, a specifically angled and levered pressure that, with pace and force, places great stress on the Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL).

Initially we see Agger attempt to get to his feet, where he is unable to put any weight through the affected knee. A further diagnostic clue unfolds as the camera cuts to the physio treating Agger on the ground. We witness the physio applying a valgus and varus stress test to the knee. Immediately after the test, presumably fearing Collateral Ligament damage, the physio calls for a stretcher.

As Agger is carried from the field we are able to witness the stricken player holding his leg on the inside of his thigh and the outside of his ankle, as though applying his own varus pressure, a movement that would minimise MCL stretching and, presumably, ease the pain. It was therefore no surprise to see early indications of a suspected MCL strain. Subsequent reports from Anfield suggest the injury is not as serious as anticipated and diagnose a ‘significant bone bruise with no ligament damage.’

A contusion or bruise is a term often applied to soft-tissue damage. When it is used for bone it usually describes a crush injury to the bone. The hard outer surface compacts into the softer, spongy, shock absorbing inner aspect of the bone. Some medics refer to this type of injury as a type of fracture and one would also expect some soft-tissue damage. Not knowing the depth of the contusion or the extent the injury renders time-scale predictions tricky. “Significant bone bruising” could well render the bone susceptible to fracture and Agger will be under constant review from an Orthopaedic specialist to ensure he returns with minimal risk of re-injury.

Taking Liverpool at their word I feel it would be optimistic for Agger to be in contention for either Norwich or Stoke, although if the injury turns out to be a minor bone contusion and he responds well to treatment, Stoke might well be a possibility.

Samir Nasri
In the 33rd minute of the match between Manchester City and Real Madrid, Samir Nasri, during a rare foray into Real Madrid’s penalty area, can be observed accelerating into space, only to be blindsided and unceremoniously dumped to the ground with a ‘tank’ of a shoulder charge from the Real defender. The blow was harsh and unexpected and curtailed Nasri in full flight. Less than a minute later Nasri can be seen holding the back of his thigh directly over the muscle belly of Biceps Femoris, one of the hamstring group. Thirty seconds later he falls to the ground, again clutching his hamstring in the same area. He then leaves the field with a pronounced gait.

From where Nasri was holding his leg we may infer that he incurred no tendon damage (although tests would be undertaken to confirm this) as he clutched the back of his upper thigh right in the middle of the muscle belly throughout. This is one of the more common areas for hamstrings to tear and given the voluminous blood supply to the muscle, recovery should be much shorter than if the tendons were involved. Personally I feel that Nasri suffered a mild to moderate grade 1 to 2 hamstring strain, meaning only a small cross sectional area of muscle would be involved, with major disruption to the fibres unlikely.

Every patient rehabilitates at a different speed, and transition from one phase to the next will depend upon the severity of the injury and the response to treatment. Two factors can be used to predict the length of time needed for athletes to return to full function from a hamstring strain; the amount of time it takes a player to walk without pain and any previous hamstring injuries suffered, information that I’m not privy to. However, on balance, my instinct is that we could see Nasri grace the City first team approximately three weeks from the date of injury. The Fulham match may come too soon, then, a more realistic return could be when Sunderland roll up to the Etihad on October 6.

Stephen Ireland
The Aston Villa midfielder was taken off at half time at St Mary’s with a suspected broken arm. If x-rays confirm this the length of any absence will depend upon several factors; the category of fracture suffered, if the fracture was complete or in-complete, how much of the bone shaft was affected, the shape or the line of fracture and if the fracture was displaced or in-displaced – do the bone ends still end in opposition or will some type of ‘reduction’ need to be administered. In other words, the severity and type of fracture will dictate likely return scenarios.

From discussions with a physiotherapist who has worked in professional football for a number of years, we can summarise that the extent of the damage will dictate the best line of treatment. If displaced, surgery may be advocated to approximate the bones. If notdisplaced, but x-rays still reveal a full fracture, then a period of immobilisation, usually four weeks, in a plaster cast will be required. Even post four weeks, again, depending on the severity, most clubs will see a further two weeks of healing as necessary to avoid the risk of re-fracture. If not a full fracture, we should still anticipate four weeks as a minimum absence. Again, Ireland will be under constant review by orthopaedic specialists to ensure that the player returns with minimal risk of further injury, so, my gut instinct is three weeks may still be too soon despite being possible.

Under Treatment

Bacary Sagna
On the September 21 Arsenal updated Bacary Sagna’s progress indicating that The Frenchman is one week away from full training.

Arsene Wenger, correctly, has a tradition of nurturing long term injured players back slowly and delicately and when you consider that this is the second fracture of the Fibula that Sagna has incurred in the last eight months, caution is understandable. With this in mind, when full training is resumed on the September 28, it is logical to assume that the medical staff would want to monitor full training for any reactions or latent deficits for a further 10 to 14 days before a return to competitive action would be considered. Factor in performance related fitness and match sharpness and, barring any set-backs, expect him to be physically ready to play some part when Arsenal roll up at Norwich, after the international break, on October 20.

It has to be noted that his rehabilitation, this time, will have taken close to six months, whereas his previous Fibula fracture took four months to heal. He won’t be rushed back prematurely. He is also now 29-years-old and this type of serious injury can leave psychological and physiological scars. An accumulation of injuries can potentially have significant consequences and often leaves its mark mechanically. There is also Carl Jenkinson’s almost match by match improvement to consider. The ex-Charlton starlet is the future of Arsenal, playing well in the present. He is staking a claim and has already laid sturdy foundations. Add into the mix the resolve shown by the Arsenal rearguard this season and we can see quite a conundrum building for “professor” Wenger.

Jack Wilshere
Arsenal were further buoyed with the news of the return to full training of another long-term absentee, Jack Wilshere. A stress fracture to the ankle, hampered by a string of aggravations and set-backs, caused him to miss the previous 14 months.

His physical rehabilitation is now nearing completion and the next stage is to monitor his reactions to full training, which he resumed on the September 20 and taking into consideration the length of absence and Wenger’s penchant for patience and caution with long term injury casualties, it is safe to assume that he will be monitored for reactions before any type of competitive match would be considered. Reports today suggested that Wilshere could feature in Monday’s U21 encounter with West Brom. That may well come too soon – reports also suggest that the Gunners are looking to another U21 fixture, the meeting with Reading on October 8.

You can bet that Wilshere won’t be rushed. All things considered he is still three, probably four weeks away from a first team recall and barring set-backs he should be in contention around the time that Arsenal entertain QPR at the Emirates on October 27.

* Please note, while “From the Physio” offers a unique insight into the injuries that are concerning Fantasy Football managers, such a piece must come with a hefty disclaimer. We might be offering an expert’s view of such injuries but, as with just a remote assessment to go on, the views expressed here should not be taken as gospel or with any certainty. They are, however, hopefully of great interest and arm Fantasy managers with more information to help make their own judgements.

Getting rid of Graham. Am I mad to even consider bringing in Lukaku over Lambert? The latter is nailed on, with spot kicks in the locker, but I've got a really good feeling about Lukaku, offers so much. My other possibility is Fletcher, but I dislike the lack of chances created by Sunderland.

I do not understand ppl having kept Graham for this long and getting rid of him now. In the next 3 games he will play Stoke away and then Reading and Wigan at home. I think the guy deserves a chance for at least the next 3. He can really score...

It worked last season! I'm just not convinced that a rotation threatened RVP, playing away from home in a tough fixture would be a better option than Bale, Cazorla, Barfa, Felllaini, Suarez, Berba in a sweet home fixture.

A little harsh, but I would consider that to be silly, imo. You don't have to always captain the big hitter in your team. Captain the guy who is heading into the gw with good form, and a good fixture. For eg-: this week B.Arfa/Ba/Everton players....

Could work but mid priced assets are often hit and miss. Obviously if RVP is away to Citeh or looks out of touch then yes alternatives may need to be considered. But for 80-90% of fixtures RVP would usually be a great captaincy shout.

Btw as you have got rid of Tevez, whom are you considering for City cover? Surely in light of their fixtures it is important to have one or two of their players out of Kompany, Y.Toure, Silva, and Aguero?

What are people doing with Bale? I was positively intrigued by what In Kewell Kompany wrote when he compared Bale and Hazard. I was planning to get rid of him after their match against AVL in gw7, for Cazorla. Is that suddenly a bad idea now?

I just typed a post but broswer crashed. So here is the short version:

I'm thinking pienaar is a better captaincy option than fellaini if only because he will *never* be asked to drop deep and defend whereas fellaini *might* depending on result, substitutions, opposition etc.

    Thoughts?

Well this game is one where I am considering captainicy.

But I mean in general because the possibility of fellaini dropping deep at least for some of the game is always there IMO.

Considering southampton's attacking nature it is also the kind of game where they might find themselves under attacking pressure and protect a lead. Obviously they could also go 6-0 up in the first half!

    Rvp or Baines for captain...

Rvp has scored every league game he started.. United are a beast at home... they have a brilliant PL record against Spurs... Spurs look open and crap in general
Baines up against possibly the worst side defensively in the league.. good cs potential, good attacking potential.. rested midweek and has great form.

Should be goals for both home sides but it has to be Rvp right?!

Between the two, I would go RVP. Southampton play an open game and can score, I wouldn't be surprised to see them put one past Everton. Thus, in my mind you need to rely on offensive points by Baines, which he can do, but not as easily or prolific as RVP. I have both and currently have the arm band on HBA.

I currently have it on Baines, with RVP sub.

Everton havent had a penalty yet, which is surprising for a team so attacking so kind of feel they are "due" one. Southampton have proved good attacking though,so if you lower the odds on clean sheet, RVP does seem the more sensible option.

I twisted as Tevez's inconsistent starts may mean a drop in points/value. I had him since he was 9.0 so i made .4 off of him. I brought in Lambert prior to his rise, and if he keeps rising I could make up what left on the table from Tevez.

As deadline approaches still byggered if I can make my mind up how to prioitise my tranfers this week. Got 2 FT, candidates are -

    DDG - Rotation
    Cuellar - Injury
    Dyer - rotation?
    Noble - poor returns
    Tevez - rotation
Graham - running out of patience

DDG obviously has to go sometime soon, will more than likely replace with Foster, but then will probably choose Begovic anyway, but it is a long term replacement.

Cuellar - looks liek a few weeks but can cover this week with Baines, Ivan and Wilson(sto) or at a push Fox(sot)

Dyer - is he really the one mostly at threat of rotation?

Noble - probbaly not a priority, better options around, but for a rotated mid he is ticking over

Tevez - 120 mins midweek would suggest not to play at weekend so might be prudent to go now

Graham - again probably not such a priority, stuck wiht him for now woudl hurt to get rid for good fixtures and see him score.

Earleir in the week I was about decided on DDG and Dyer for Foster an Piennaar. Any reason I should change that?

My WC team is edging closer to completion. How is it looking today?

    Foster, Begovic
    Baines, Gibbs, Saylor/Wilson/Bardsley (or Cuellar)
    Bale, Cazorla, Barfa, Pienaar, Fellaini
    Suarez, Berba, Lambert

    - Suarez gets 3 games to prove himself (nor, STK, RDG), then is out for Ba (or Dave) for toon's sweet fixtures
    - The plan was to rotate Berba and Lambert, but after putting these players into my spreadsheet, Lambert will play most games, with one of barfa, pienaar, berba sitting out when they have crap away fixtures.
    - I have 0.5m to play with. Any worthy upgrades?
    - Yes I know there are no manchester forwards!!

One of the things that I have been thinking about recently, is the fact that the likes of RVP are such good captain options has (probably) already been factored into their price. If there was no captain aspect to the game, their prices would be lower. Hence there is no added advantage of "being a nailed on captain option", because you pay extra for it

NB I have no idea if this is actually the case. Its just something i've been pondering. Thoughts?

Well, yes in terms of value (points per minute) the most expensive players are rarely as good as the best of the cheaper players.

RVP is pretty good value though given his prolific season last year and a good start to this, but it may be hard for him to maintain those stats especially if rotation comes into play a bit more.

Note: I always look at points/ minutes and typically I think that for every million dollars they should be getting about 20 points per 3000 mins (nearly every game all season). So a player who plays nearly all season who costs 5 million should get around 100 points, and a player who costs 10 million should get 200 points, etc.

From there you can see if they're usually playing 90 mins regularly THIS season and I think you have a good indicator of value.

RVP's start this year has been very good, but not otherworldly. His points per minute are brilliant, but Ba is right there with him for almost half the price, Lambert is just a shade behind, and Fletcher has actually done better. For RVP's price he really needs to absolutely dominate those guys. So far he hasn't. I dont expect that to change, personally.

I think the value of players like Lambert, Ba and Berbatov is the better way to go than RVP.

true but this is true of all the big hitters. You could make a reasonable team for 94-95 million which would be brilliant value. but the 7-8 million in the bank wouldn't get you points.

It's too early in the season to be comparing who's dominating who- some forwards are in form, some aren't. RVP is a player you can pretty much always rely upon when fit. Yes Ba, Lambert and others are close to his scoring at the moment but its early doors. Look at it 20 weeks in and you can pretty much guarantee RVP (if fit) will be among the top 5 point scorers on FPL. There isn't really any player you could now confidently state would be on similar points.

I don't think it's a mistake either if you are happy with your team.

Apart from RVP and hazard I don't see any players I fancy from those three teams. And with hazard's fixtures being pretty rubbish, only RVP gets the nod in my team and only because I don't want other expensive guys and seems silly to leave 5-6 mil in the bank.

Interesting WC team. Def not the norm, but I applaude the balls to go with this. On my planned WC if I go for it, I have Aguero / Suarez / Jelly.

No obvious holes besides the obvious lack of a big nailed on Captain option, but if your happy to go with a mid ranger with a good fixture then that's not an issue. In fact with the rotation issues it does make the big hitting RVP or Tevez, a risky option anyway some weeks.

I'll break down my honest opinion:

GK`s -> Perfect Match. Rotation and capital wise.

DEF-> I reckon you can squeeze some money out of that defense. you need at least a 4mil defender there... Baines/Gibbs/Cuellar/Demel/4.5mil. Wouldn't get Wilson with Begovic already there.. (considering you will play 3 of them most weeks).

MID->Amazing ...should not dbl on EVE though. I would downgrade one of them to a reliable/potential benchwarmer (Sterling??Guthrie?) You cannot go into a battle with that forward line. Suarez, Berba, Lambert is way tooooo lightweight. And you have no capital aside to upgrade any one of them if neccessary. That is why I think you got to squeeze some money from your MID and DEF..in able to buy one of the potential big guns later on(Roon, Aguero...etc)...in case they explode... Cheers...

        Cheers for that.

I'm willing to jump head first in with the no manchester strikers at least up until the january WC. That means i have a lot more money to play with in other areas, hence not needing a bench sitter in defence or midfield.

I will play Baines, Bale and Santi in every game, the rest will be rotated. I have a spreadsheet that maps out my team selection up until GW20, and there is very little problems with team selection. Almost every week, there are 3 players with poor away fixtures.

Using this strategy, you don't have to worry about rotation. Even if one of your players is benched (which will happen occasionally), I will have 3 solid players waiting to come in.

I am on Wildcard and decided to put him in along with baines and gibbs as starters pretty much every week (with two 4.0 subs who rotate well in case theyre needed).

If he flops over the next few weeks I will bring rafael in but the next few fixtures are FAR in favour of johnson, who looks like one of liverpool's most attacking players as well as the chance of clean sheets.

    Thoughts?

I have used my WC. Now trying to make a different kind of team. Teams still a draft but thought to get some advice in the process:

Ruddy Al Habsi (good rotation, no prise rises and lots of save points)
      Gibbs McAuley Baines Cuellar Shawcross

You should probably not go without a midfield and forward line. Just a suggestion.

Norwich and Wigan will have very little clean sheets. Should buy Begovic. will be a great combination with Jussi or Foster.

Instead of McAuley, I would save 0.3 to buy Olsson instead. Get rid of both if you opt for Foster at GK

Instead of Shawcross, I would save 0.5 to buy Wilson instead. Get rid of both if you opt for Begovic at GK

What's the general consensus? I will take 2 -4 hits over the next 2 gw's to establish some players I want in my team. So is -8 worth me using my WC instead, which includes fixing more issues within my team which won't be fixed with the hits?

No, take the hit and save the wild card. Wild cards are only worth with 20+ hits...meaning when your team is total crap.

8pts is borderline for me. I would say any more than that, and you should be wildcarding. You should be able to get away with an 8pt hit, if that will leave you with a squad you are happy with.

That's the thing, that's the minimum I will def take. It still doesn't fix all the issues with my squad though (Tevez/Fed in goals). If I wildcard, i'd essentially make 8-9 changes.

That's exactly were I was. I could have muddled on, and made changes over a few weeks. But it would have taken A LOT of patience. That's something I don't have in abundance

Yep. Ba is very, very good but Berbatov is going to be the best value in the game when it's all said and done.

      captaincy choice:
      1) RVP
      2) Baines
      3) Pienaar
      4) HBA

tempting to give it to Baines..what do you reckon?

I'd only consider captaining Baines against a less attacking side or for a dgw

The only reason I am considering it is because if he gets on the board at all he is almost guaranteed 2+ BPs. An assist gets him 2 while a goal is 3, easy.

So, even if SOUT scores, he could still be looking at a 8-11 point day without much trouble.

Why do you think he is guaranteed 2+ BPs? I'd say that's only true in a low scoring game. I don't see this being a low scoring game personally.

Agree. Baines is captain material at home to stoke or reading I'd say, maybe even norwich this season, but not southampton who are emerging as the next blackpool - score nearly every game but concede too (although hopefully they'll stay up!)

After a decent start to the campaign, I fancied a good old fashioned fantasy gamble this week. I took two hits and ended up with this lot. How many points you reckon this week ...

      Jussi (Vorm)
      Baines, Cuellar, Demel, (Clyne, Gunter)
      Fellaini, Santi, Hazard, Pienaar, (Kac)
      RVP, Aguero, Graham

From the glint in pardiola's eye as he was describing Cisse last night, we could be about to witness a return to form. I think we will see him continue to play up front with ba, and could be a great option from GW9.

Even if they both play up front (ie Ba not on the left), I would still expect Cisse to be the further forward of the two, so more likely to be on the end of things. However, Ba's price and penalties might make him the better option.

HBA will have a share of the penalties.

I'm actually coming to the conclusion that i'll avoid the likes of Podolski, Ba, or City forwards. There's too many goalscorers in each team. Whereas guys like Fletcher, Berbatov, Suarez or Lambert are THE spearhead of their respective teams.

With a team like Newcastle you've got 3 potent attackers who'll be sharing goals.. Newcastle managed a single goal against Norwich and I haven't really been convinced by them so far. Ba's been doing his bit but once Cisse regains a bit of confidence he'll be getting his share, and Newcastle aren't going to be scoring 3 or 4 in many matches.
City should score bucketloads but with 4 proper forwards they'll be dividing up quite a bit. LAst season was frustrating enough choosing one when they only had 3 available when Tevez was out in the cold, 4 will be brutal.
And as for Arsenal Podolski appears to be the only viable forward option there, and he doesn't even play centre forward.

As opposed to someone like Berbatov who's far cheaper and most of Fulhams threat will go through him. Lambert and Fletch are goalscorers and the main source of goals in their sides and these guys being cheap makes for a RVP and a stronger midfield.
