The second international break of the season gives us time to take stock and roll out our weekly regular. As always, we take a look at the top of the Scout League and cast an eye over the market activity as we count down the days until Gameweek 8 is upon us. Only 12 to go, then:

Scout League Standings

There’s no move at the top of the Scout league, where T.I. racked up 64 points over the weekend. Captain Eden Hazard brought home 18 points, while Santi Cazorla, Nikica Jelavic and Leighton Baines were all amongst the goals. Asmir Begovic chipped in with nine points between the sticks as T.I. moved to 516 points for the season and third place overall.

Ivo V moves up into second position, having returned 67 points in Gameweek 7. He also decided to captain Hazard, while Wayne Routledge and Cazorla produced 21 points between them in a four-man midfield. At the back, both Rafael and William Gallas earned clean sheets to take Ivo’s total to 498 points.

In third spot is Iyad Zahlan after a 46 point haul last time out. Baines, Cazorla, Hazard and Michu grabbed the goals and though his decision to captain Luis Suarez failed to pay off, he still sits in 42nd place in the overall rankings.

Damon Randall bullets into fourth position after producing an incredible 87 points – a tally that was inside the top 2,000 for Gameweek 7. He had one of those weeks where almost everyone chipped produced the goods – only Marouane Fellaini returned less than four points for Damon. A backline of Branislav Ivanovic, Rafael and Baines, with Begovic in goal, combined for 33 points, while the decision to captain Fernando Torres brought in 24 points alone. Damon has climbed on to 57th overall, sitting on 494 points so far.

Bob Booker completes the top five. James Morrison and Steve Pienaar were his differentials over the other featured managers – the midfield duo picked up 20 points between them, while Ivanovic and Baines were the standouts at the back.

For the contributors, Facer leads the way after returning 66 points in Gameweek 7. Baines and Begovic were joined by William Gallas at the back, while Cazorla, Michu, Hazard and Jelavic were all amongst the goals. The Fantasy Football Scout league remains at number one but our lead has been cut down to just 1.8 points over Last Word Listeners.

Market Trends

Wayne Routledge is the most popular asset since the weekend’s games. The Swansea winger has already attracted almost 26,000 new owners after a 13 point haul against Reading on Saturday, with his 5.1 price clearly appealing. Although there remains concerns over a regular role, as Michael Laudrup rotates him with Nathan Dyer and Pablo Hernandez, Routledge has made a strong case for a starting berth at home to Wigan next time out – he has averaged 7.5 points per game at the Liberty Stadium so far.

Santi Cazorla is next in line – no surprise, really, given his masterclass at West Ham on Saturday evening. The Arsenal midfielder has been snapped up by over 23,000 Fantasy managers and now has a trip to Norwich on his agenda – bearing in mind the Canaries have shipped nine goals in their last two, Cazorla can expect significant investment before the fortnight’s break is over.

Investment at the back is looking like a tactic for many. Aleksandar Kolarov, Rafael and Branislav Ivanovic have all been transferred into more than 21,000 teams as defences are reshaped. While the latter two look relatively safe for starts, the Kolarov bandwagon looks far from stable – Saturday was his first appearance since Gameweek 3.

Demba Ba and Leighton Baines continue to pick up investment, with 17,000 and 15,000 drafting in the duo. Chelsea pair Juan Mata and Fernando Torres make their way into a combined 25,000 new teams, while Jussi Jaaskelainen, Asmir Begovic, Carl Jenkinson, James Morrison, Gervinho and Luis Suarez have all persuaded 10,000+ Fantasy managers to throw investment their way.

In terms of transfers out, faith in Swansea’s backline is starting to diminish. Michel Vorm, Angel Rangel and Ashley Williams have been shipped out by a combined 24,000 teams after the Welsh club’s 2-2 home draw with Reading. Michael Laudrup’s side has now conceded two or more goals in each of the last five Gameweeks. In midfield, over 24,000 have bid their farewells to Nathan Dyer and Michu, with a likely move to Wayne Routledge freeing up some budget.

Intriguingly, Manchester City’s assets are also being sold off ahead of a strong run of fixtures. Vincent Kompany, Yaya Toure and Carlos Tevez lead the way in their respective classifications – while Tevez’s 19,000 transfers out can be understood after he failed to score for the fourth Gameweek in a row, the former duo (with a combined 31,000 sales) are pretty much nailed-on when fit and offer a consistency of starts that is rare amongst Roberto Mancini’s side. Granted, Kompany missed out against Sunderland with a calf problem but if he is available for the trip to West Brom, there seems no doubt he will slot straight back into the first XI.

Marouane Fellaini is also accumulating plenty of trades out. With no attacking returns in his last two, the Everton man has been offloaded by 15,000+ Fantasy managers, despite a strong run of fixtures to follow for David Moyes’ outfit.

The return of Wayne Rooney seems to be having an effect on Robin Van Persie owners. The Dutchman was outscored by Rooney in their first league start together and with the former currently 1.8 cheaper, more than 9,000 have shipped out Van Persie since last Saturday’s deadline. Shinji Kagawa has also proved unpopular – in excess of 13,000 have parted company with the former Dortmund man after he was subbed off early once again at the weekend.

Vorm to Begovic perhaps given Swansea lack of solidity at the back. That should free up 0.5m or so to do something with Noble (assuming no money in the bank). Look at the likes of Sterling, Maloney and Taarabt for cheap punts that offer the hope of more than just 2 point returns.

Evening all, my team is below and I have 2FT and 0.7m:

    Begovic / Federici
    Baines / Cuellar / Hangeland / Ridgewell / Demel
    Hazard / Yaya / Michu / Pienaar / Noble
    RVP / Tevez / Graham

I am fairly set on Hazard & Graham - Cazorla & Berbatov but I do have some defensive injuries to sort out?

    Any opinions?

It is all the rage at the minute to transfer out Hazard, but I'm sceptical. On paper his fixtures look tough, but Man Utd are weak defensively through the middle (particularly to pace), with Carrick and Scholes in there. I'd fancy Chelsea to score at least one.

The Spurs game really depends on how AVB sets them up, but I'd be surprised to see a 0-0 or a Spurs win, so you never know.

The Graham OUT transfer looks essential, and Berbatov is a great replacement.

I like Cazorla and his fixtures and form certainly appeal, so maybe make both moves then avoid watching the Chelsea games!

Those look like excellent subs to me, both short and long term.

I have Federici myself, and will be getting Begovic in for him - but seeing as my other keep is Jussi who has Southampton at home, I can live with that and do it the following week. Seeing as your playing keeper is at Old Trafford, you might want to do your Federici patch up now. But the age old adage don't spend points on a keeper! Or maybe your plan is to play Begovic every week.

Thanks for both replies, very detailed and food for thought.

I haven't got round to getting rid of Federici yet, considering I had De Gea a couple of weeks back I was in a right mess and Begovic has done well since I got him. I will play him for the foreseeable future, apart from OT next time out Stoke have very nice fixtures. Saves on the rotation headache as well that I always get wrong.

To be honest there's quite a few things I want to change which is why I am doubting getting rid of Hazard as he is playing well. I don't think I am quite at the WC stage yet, want to keep it for when I am really desperate!!

You've got 2 City players - which everyone else will be scrabbling around for soon IMO. Graham to Berb is big step in the right direction - but I also think teams without an Arsenal attacker will regret it over the next couple of gameweeks.

Carzola -- Bale was a massive fail this week but i'm still content with the transfer. Don't get me wrong though, Carzola is a brilliant player but for all the goals Arsenal are scoring he's not that involved. More likely to assist the assister.

Hazard -- Walcott is this weeks tranny and maybe Zamora(i know i know) -- Berbatov

Cazorla is creating more chances than pretty much anyone else in the game at the moment - and that's been with very tough fixtures. So I don't buy the assisting the assister argument in this instance. He won't assist/score every game - but no one does. And he looks more likely to do both than most.

Please take a look at my proposed wildcard team, and let me know what you think.

    Foster - Begovic

    Rafael - Baines - Davies - Clyne - McCartney

    Mata - Bale - Pienaar - Cazorla - Puncheon

    Lambert - RVP - Berbatov

I will have about 1.5 million in bank for possibly Mata>Silva or extra funds for downgrading RVP to upgrade Lambert later on if required.

Not that keen on him myself. Just thought if you wanted him, may as well get him now, as fixtures could barely be better for Man City and worse for Chelsea.

I'd rather go Aguero and ignore a 3rd expensive m/f.

Id say get rid of davies who has only 1 good fixture. Mcartney will be rotated with o'brien and Wham have tough fixtures GW10 onwards. So id say more investment in ur defense. Also wud not include rvp in my WC either get rooney/aguero and surely u have to have ba in there instead of lambert.

I am about to push the WC button to a similar team I just don't know if I have the heart to do it.

      Currently on

      Foster - Federici

      Baines - Gibbs - Clyne - Demel - Nelsen

      Hazard - Bale - Gervinho - Michu - Kaca

      RVP - Tevez - Lambert

It's actually a solid team that has scored well but there are a few big sore spots:

      1) RVP at 13.5M - I think there will be 3 or 4 games like Wigan earlier this year [he was rested in 4-0 win] where his pricetag won't be worth it. I got the hat trick and the price rise, time to cut.

      2) Federici and Foster - could use replacing both - Federici a must [2nd choice] and Foster's fixtures aren't the best

      3) Could use upgrading Lambert to Berbatov

      4) Gibbs [thigh injury] to Rafael or Jenkinson

      5) Hazard to Cazorla [season long] or Mata [season long]

3/4/5 not as pressing but 1 and 2 are. RVP at 13.5m is a lot of cash.

I may regret this if Hazard scores 2 against Tottenham, or Lambert scores a penalty next week, or Gervinho runs rampant... but close to pushing the button.

    Thinking ahead to GW8...

    Bench one:

Michu (WIG) / Bale (CHE) / Hazard (tot) / Pienaar (qpr)
Tevez (wba) / Fletcher (NEW) / Jelavic (qpr)

I'm loathe to drop Fletcher, especially at home against a leaky Newcastle defence. So it's got to be Pienaar, surely?

It's time to resurrect this season.

Thinking Lambert to Berb and Fellaini to Cazorla. Could easily backfire, but hey ho. Then, like on Escape to the Country, there is a final twist, a mystery move/house and maybe a step too far.

Fletcher to Giroud for a hit. Bonkers? Well, I see one goal max for Fletcher in his next (perhaps of course), but Arsenal have the two tastiest fixtures of the season ahead and I can see double digits with regards to goals scored. Risky and again will backfire, but maybe worth it.

Could reverse the move when Fletcher faces AVL and Giroud goes to MUN.

As below, I'm weighing up options but whatever I do I want either Gerrard or Suarez for Reading game and Arsenal coverage (preferably Santi) for the weeks ahead.

It's big upgrade in pretty much every department. Fulham > Southampton, Arsenal > Sunderland, Berbatov > Lambert, Giroud > Fletcher, Newcastle > Norwich, West Ham (at home) > Villa (away) - admittedly the fixtures bit is short-termism, but the rest isn't!

More than worth 4 pts IMO. Esp. if you back one of them with the armband (which presumably you wouldn't with the 2 outgoings)

Leaving aside the transfers, people have a proven tendency to take greater risks when the chips are down, rather then take an incremental more safe approach that may be more prudent.

Chief example, gambling or a failing business.

Play your own game, don't knee jerk, ignore the herd and play the stats imo. Leave emotion at the door.

As for the transfers, I like them actually. Not sure id take the hit though, so id wait another week for that final transfer.

        Hey Brian.

I am being really conservative this year (6 transfer so far). And I have a nagging feeling that I am going to be took risk-averse and miss out, where as previously I had more of a gut, shoot from the hip approach that would often see me spend 4pts to make 8pts.

This is obv true that people chasing may take *too many* risks - but equally a problem can be leading, sitting on your hands and getting complacent.

Judge every transfer on it's individual merits IMO and try to be clouded by over-thinking it one way or the other.

        Easier said than done!

Doing the right thing is not always easy. I'm not dead set against hits by the way, if your making an informed and long term decision.

Hell, i'm not against mistakes either. If your aiming for a very high rank, your gonna make mistakes along the path. If you don't, your not trying hard enough imo!

Only thing i'm really saying I suppose, is make informed decisions and play your own game. Learn from the mistakes and when things go wrong, keep plugging away.

Now RVP... I know all about the points per game that he should be providing for his price etc etc but do people think it is worth having him in your team, or is he actually just using up money when you could muchly improve your team? With his comments of 'I want to assist more' is it really gonna bring in the big point hauls we all want in comparison to someone like Aguero? Along with this RVP was playing along side Welbeck//Rooney surely decreasing his chances//goals compared to all of the chances he got in the Arsenal days...

Aguero is no less a rotation risk than Tevez. Suarez, just cause of that hattrick? Doesn't buy me. Not having RVP may backfire real hard, as he is the automatic captain material, and when he bags goals, you'll surely not be happy.

I think RVP is a nice safe place to put money. If you are conservative and going for a respectable but not outstanding rank, he's a good investment. If you are highly competitive and want to maximize your rank, he's not for you. Twenty teams have topped 500 points, none of them have RVP.

I think regarding RVP, managers fall into 2 camps. There are those that keep a couple of big hitters and use other positions to follow the bandwagons falling back on RVP as a steady captain choice, and then those that are more willing to make wholesale changes; playing the fixtures and form where no player in their squad is a permanent fixture.

Of course, there is a middle ground to both approaches, but generally speaking you should only ditch RVP if you have a hands on management style and fancy your chances at bringing in big point earners according to fixtures and form.

Best 3 strikers for the next few weeks and/or long term?

On a WC, currently have RVP, Fletch, Tevez

    thinking Rooney, Berb, Aguero?

But might keep orginals, might look at some other ones altogether!

    Thanks guys

Aguero, Jelavic and Ba for WC.

If you are just going for next few weeks then Suarez instead of Ba.

RVP-averages 5.9 ppg and doesn't look very threatening when he's out there. Will share points with Rooney and other ManU players. Not worth 13.5 million. Even the leaders of the game don't have him.

Rooney-will be a link player like Lampard a few years ago and get mainly assists and bonus.

Aguero- a bonfire adorning machine who is a more palatable 11 million. Can use those RVP funds to Improve your midfield and if by chance Aguero is rotated, you should have a good player ready to step in with a better balanced team.

Silva-going to wait until GW 9 to make sure he is nailed on.

Bale-has some good home games coming up and is bombing down the wing and looking active

Hazzard-doesn't look as active as Mata and the penalty he had earlier this season would not have been taken had Lampard been playing. Double game week the beginning of the season has skewed his stats.

Cazorla-made me feel better with his goal yesterday, but he looks to be a Modric type with the assist before the assist and not getting the fantasy points one would expect with his involvement.

Walters-will be a good get GW9 when Stoke has good fixtures. Fellaini may be sacrificed if he doesn't get it going again.

Baines-like having a midfielder who takes set pieces as a defender.

Some well reasoned common sense thoughts. Would only disagree on RVP.. with Rooney back in shape and helping out the midfield (he was United's best player against Newcastle), United are going to see much more of the ball and it follows (don't want to use "ergo"!) that RVP will have more chances.

It didn't really work out that way at St. James' but I can't see any other conclusion. Fergie tried the diamond formation out of necessity with Valencia on the fringes of returning and simply not trusting Nani away from home. He was also wary of Newcastle winning the equivalent fixture 3-0 last season.

I can see a RVP spearhead with Welbeck/Nani - Rooney - Valencia midfield in a 4-2-3-1 formation for most games. It'll be frightening for any non-RVP owner and is the only reason I've not got rid during United's tougher fixtures.

Need another 7000 transfers out for Berbatov to be able to afford to bring him back without a hit. What's the likelihood? -368 for today alone, not sure why

Option A: Sort my defence with 2 FT's:
    Vorm / Etherington
    Boyce, Baines, Demel, Rangel, Jenkinson

    Option B:
Kagawa > Cazorla & 1 FT on Defence

    Foster, Begovic
    Baines, Clyne, Demel, Jenkinson, Cuellar
    Hazard, Cazorla, Michu, Pienaar, Sterling
    RvP, Tevez, Fletcher

is the current team with 2 FT and 0,1 in bank.

Thinking of doing Tevez and Hazard out and Aguero and Ben Arfa in and pocket 0,5 pounds.

    Any thoughts?
