After a horrendous run of opening fixtures, Stoke’s prime Fantasy assets are finally being looked upon in a different light as the schedule starts to smile a little kinder. While many Fantasy managers will be somewhat reluctant to invest in an attack which has scored just eight goals in the opening eight Gameweeks (Wayne Rooney own goal inclusive), the Potters’ rearguard could be primed for transfers in after a series of resilient displays.

Prior to last Saturday’s defeat at United, Tony Pulis’ side had shipped a mere five goals in their first seven fixtures, conceding just once against City and Chelsea in addition to returning a clean sheet at home to Arsenal. We’ve sang the praises of Asmir Begovic for a number of weeks – the Bosnian holds firm at the top of our goalkeeper Watchlist rankings – while Marc Wilson was the subject of last Friday’s Moneyball piece; both look strong value at 4.7 and 4.5 respectively in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

While Potters skipper Ryan Shawcross remains the most popular pick, with 18% FPL ownership, we’re focussing on an old Scout favourite – Robert Huth. Priced at 5.5 in both FPL and the Sky Sports game, there’s a reason why Huth is the costliest option amongst Pulis’ rearguard. The former Chelsea man’s eye for goal has seen him notch nine times in the previous couple of campaigns – the same number as Leighton Baines, for example, with his aerial ability in the opposition’s box always liable to strike terror into backlines the length and breadth of the country.

Granted, Huth has yet to justify any real investment, with no attacking returns or bonus registered thus far. As a result, he has picked up a mere 1.2% ownership, but his consistency over the last few seasons suggests he can always be relied upon; he has accrued 22 FPL bonus points over the previous two campaigns and has found the net at least three times from 2009/10 onwards.

The upcoming fixtures certainly offer plenty encouragement. Pulis’ side play at home four times (SUN, QPR, FUL, NEW) and also face trips to Norwich and West Ham, with perhaps only the Gameweek 12 trip to Upton Park a concern for those Fantasy managers eyeing up Stoke’s options. With the dead-ball delivery of Charlie Adam now added to the Potters’ ranks, it seems only a matter of time before Huth opens his account and begins to shine as a real differential.

    In relation to the article, which are great and should actually be discussed! Huth atm is a luxury item few can afford, no?

    Especially during the difficult times when everyone is tightening belts and laying off other expensive luxuries... To get Ba in!! Plus Beg and Willsy Boo at 4.7 and 4.5 respectively offer great value.

    Can I just say, thank you for writing the articles. It must get annoying writing such beauty, only to be bombarded with RMT and bench choices.

      I was about to say the same thing. I for one am getting Huth in for the clean sheet and goal threat combination. I know he hasn't scored yet this year but a goal or two over the next half a dozen games would justify the extra cost as a differential IMO.

        But are you a little worried Adams has taken his set piece taking duties away? And Stoke aren't so big on long throws, so he is not getting forward as much as once did?

          He's more likely to come forward against lesser teams though arguably and this is the best run of fixtures they've had all season. I'll be prepared to downgrade him after a few weeks if he isn't getting involved in corners etc but previous seasons suggest he will be a threat.

          How about you, sounds like you've talked yourself out of Huth already?

            Good points, good points.

            Sadly :-(. I wanted him but could not get the million from elsewhere. Taken a 12 point hit this week. Wanted to WC but figured it is not worth 12 points. Beg and Ba were rising and if I waited I could not longer afford them.

            So it's

            Beg / Henderson (...)
            Cuellar / Gallas / Baines / Hughes / Mariappa - Looking at Hughes out Wilson in next week.
            Cazorla / Bale / Pie-Nar / Lallana / Guth
            Ba / Aguero / RVP.

            So very very top heavy. But now have 0.0 in the bank.

              Love the front three! I'm really keen to hang onto my WC as long as possible so not changing my strikers just yet. Unfortunately as a suffering red I'm looking at chances created (and spectacularly squandered) as a positive. Will run out of patience soon though and swap to ba probably...

              Also got an eye on lallana, great fixtures but Adkins looking a bit out of his depth in this division.

                Yeah but at 6m he was the best option I felt. If I had 0.4 more it would have been Walters.

                Suarez did me well for the three games I got him in for. But he is also a heart attack king. But he could quite easily score against anybody. Hopefully for your sake he does well 🙂

    Sorry for the repost, but the comments are flying by and I'd really like your thoughts…I have 2FT to use, 0.1 in the bank and this team:

    Jaas Foster
    Demel Hangeland Cuellar Demel Cole
    Bale Caz Pienaar Sterling Dyer
    RVP Aguero Lambert

    Options are:

    a) Lambert -> Crouch, Hangeland -> Wilson
    b) Lambert -> Ba, Cole -> Wilson
    c) Lambert -> Ba, Bale -> Lennon (yes really)
    d) Anything else?

    I've had a long-standing policy of never checking my H2H rival's teams before the deadline. Because I don't want to allow my decisions to be compromised by psychological factors.

    Unfortunately I am very tempted to check this week because a win could put me in the Serie A CL spots...

        I disagree - Sunderland have only let in 8 goals so far this season and the next 7-8 fixtures are not that bad. Personlly I've gone with O'Shea rather than Huth and will be looking forward to the x2 game week sometime soon........

      Aye...well I'd ditch Vermaelen for sure...far too much for what he's doing..downgrade him to Vertonghen who looks the most likely defender to score/assist from open play to me (away to South then home to Wigan...and Col to Risse (not a bad run coming up apart from Arsenal) keep Shawx for the good Stoke run...and Gorkss is Gorkss...

      Risse.....Vertonghen....Baines... (ShawX....Gorkss)
