The Knee Jerk

With double game weeks aplenty, wildcards being dealt and delusions of grandeur in the minds of Fantasy Football managers across the globe, finding a bargain is going to be high on the list of things to do during the wildcard window in order to get the combination of players desired. How, therefore, might one go about finding a deal to quench the thirst for the best possible Fantasy football team for the forthcoming weeks?

Thankfully this weekend has presented or highlighted some areas which managers can exploit. Managers (real life ones) have shuffled the pack or brought in fresh faces and, in order to keep ahead of the game, it’s up to us to hunt the bargains down and take a gamble. This is the knee jerk so forgive me if these guys don’t play next week. Thou hast been warned.

Personally the area I like to be thrifty the most is in defence where you can find a bargain or two who might just pick up the odd 6 points by doing very little. The logic being that a cheap striker or midfield generally has to be half decent to get a goal or assist whereas a cheap defender only needs to play in a team with a moderate chance of a clean sheet in order to get an additional four points. So who has come to my attention over the weekend (and before) who might fit the bill? Read on people, read on;

Name: Kyle Walker Club: Aston Villa Position: Right Back Value: 4.0m

Walker has signed for Aston Villa on loan from Spurs for the remainder of the season. Whilst he had a quiet game today it is telling that Houllier threw him straight in at the deep end in the Midlands derby. A player with attacking intent, the England Under 19 international spent the early part of the season with QPR where he caught the eye for his marauding runs forward. If he can do the same for Villa, with the (albeit slim) chance of a cleansheet, at 4.0m he could be a real steal. Villa also have a double game week this weekend as well – Back of the net!

Name: Martin Kelly Club: Liverpool Position: Right Back Value: 4.2m

Since the return of King Kenneth one noticeable change has been the introduction of Martin Kelly at right back with the usual candidate Glen Johnson shifted to left back. Whilst there is no certainty this little arrangement will continue, Kelly has impressed in his recent starts and, before this, in Europe with the Reds. With another double game next week and the much maligned Paul Konchesky seemingly out of favour, Kelly may well be worthy of our attention. He even got an assist last week – Cashback!

Name: Johan Djourou Club: Arsenal Position: Centre Back (or midfield if you’re Chris Waddle) Value: 4.2m

He’s been chatted about a lot on the boards as a potential addition to our Fantasy Football teams and it’s understandable why. In the eight games that the Swiss international has finished this season he’s kept five clean sheets. He’s also picked up 6 points of the bonus variety as well which means he’s catching the eyes of the “experts’. Squillaci and Vermaelen would be the obvious threats to his place but they are currently both injured and, with favourable fixtures and a double game in the offing, now could be the time to invest. Jurassic Park!

Name: Stephen Carr Club: Birmingham Position: Right Back Value: 4.4m

Ok, he’s been about for ages and yeah his stats aren’t exactly amazing but look at Birmingham’s fixtures and consider the fact that the former Republic of Ireland international is a consistent in the heart (well on the right) of the Blues defence. Even if the right back only plays 90 minutes in game week 27 and concedes a goal in each thats a cool six points right there. Whilst we have to bear in mind fixture reshuffling due to cup commitments it doesn’t hurt to dream. Jackanackanory!

And by popular demand

Name: David Murphy Club: Birmingham Position: Left Back Value: 3.9m

He’s bald, looks a lot like Stephen Carr, plays for Birmingham (but on the opposite side) and offers the same potential as the vehicular named Irishman. The only difference is that he has been drafted in as replacement for the crocked Scott Dann, who looks set to miss the remainder of the season, with Ridgwell moving more centrally. At .5 less than the aforementioned Carr he offers greater value, but the risk could come should Alex McLeish look to the transfer market or should Martin Jiranek be given a nod centrally and Ridgewell moved out wide. Either way its a watch this space with Murphy. Smell my cheese!

What's the general consensus on Kolarov now?

Originally he was gonna be bargain of the century, a sending off and taken out at 58(?) mins later and he was called a waste of space. If he's gonna play I'm interested as I want city defensive cover, Harts a bit too much for me and Toure is a br injury/red card prone.

I don't really like any of Citeh's defensive players other than Harty. Too many rotation shenanigans.

I've had Kolarov for a few weeks now but will ship him out, never to return, this week courtesy of my wild card.

My back six going fwds [for now] will be:

      Hart, Foster
Djourou, Coleman, Elmo, + 2 [undecided - probably a Liverpool player for now {kelly? skrtel? johnson?} given their 2-game week and one other]

Rafael cost me my H2H this week, should i keep faith with him now or get rid to another utd defender(Vidic/EVra)?

He is only missing 1 game right? still dodge with O'Shea now back so might be better off switching?

Did you go with Rodellega Rock? If so it worked out for you. I benched Rafael so got away with it. I thinking of a 4pt hit to swap him out for Evra, but you are right that he is only out for 1 game.

Yep went with Roda, paid off, if anything he could have got 2 goals and a DGW this week so it look like he will pay off nicely for me.

Good call there, i was even expecting some attacking points from him! you not think Vidic is worth the extra bit?

deffo if you've got the money to spare. I had him Wk's 11 - 20 and he did well for me. I took him out for Skrtel t get cash for Torres in prep for the DGW's. I'd have probably have done better if i'd kept him in!

Yeah so far I'd say you would have, still think the liverpool players will come good at some stage, i have Skrtel and Torres too.

Your team looks very good Steve, you plan on keeping the big 3 strikers or downgrading 1 when you use your WC?

downgrading to Caroll for week 26. Plan to have RVP, Carroll & Defoe (?) for week 27 with some cash in the bank. Then go Defoe to Roon/Drog for Week 28.

Not really sue at the mo, I'd reached the same conclusion as AB (below) about when to WC, the prob will be not buying 15 DGW players and benching the wrong ones. There's also the potential that ARS & TOT won't play the week after.

Yeah there's alot you need to look out for, that Arsenal and Tottenham matach as well as the Birmingham v .... or West Ham game v .... could be very annoying.

RVP and CArroll look good but not sure on Defoe, I would keep Tevez if i were you? or maybe try Dzeko? Roon/Drog your just going to have to wait to see if they have hit any form or not.

For example, in my opinion, Arsenal are more likely to keep a clean sheet in their home game against Wigan than Fulham are at home to stoke and then away at Anfield.

for defenders i rank the double gameweek sides
    man utd
    liverpool
    fulham
    villa
    wigan

i actually prefer liverpool's 2 fixtures to man utd's due to blackpool having a knack of scoring every game but man utd's defence is more solid.
of fulham villa and wigan i prefer both fulham's easier fixture (stoke at home) and their harder fixture is liverpool away as opposed to arsenal away and man city at home. i'd always back arsenal and man city to score more than liverpool so that's why i'm happier to get a fulham defender to add to my liverpool defender and what was rafael. it's maybe wishful thinking but i don't think a repeat of last season's anfield 0-0 is out of the question for fulham.

it's because the players i want for the dgw27 (arsenal, spurs, birmingham, everton) also have a good fixture in gw26 so i liked the idea of then also having 2 frees in gw28

You think? I was looking at that and i didn't think their GW26 fixtures were that good.

              Arsenal - away at Newcastle
Birmingham - away at West Ham
              Blackpool - away at Everton
              Everton - home to Blackpool
              Newcastle - home to Arsenal
              Stoke - home to Sunderland
              Tottenham - home to Bolton
WBA - away to Man City
Wolves - home to Man United

Out of those i'd only really class Spurs as having a good fixture in GW26 although others aren't too bad. The two freebies in GW28 would be very handy though.

Kelly's obviously tempting given his price but a huge unknown at this stage. No certainty that he'll play, where he'll play, or that Liverpool will be able to keep clean sheets with him in the side.

I'd personally prefer to stick with someone proven even if that means spending more.

Cesc looks poor value IMO. You could replace him with a midprice player & maybe upgrade Kelly and Stockdale.

      Well heres what id do:

      Keep Tevez.
      Play foster
      fabs will probably outscore nasri
Walcott wont play all the time, but possibly enough to be a decent shoe-in for fabs alongside rvp
you can probably get away without playing it

i think rooney is probably the safer option. although he was poor today, he has more potential to grab a big score than torres because united can run riot on their day, whereas liverpool cant really do that. also roo takes the pens, which is a bonus. but it is a close call, im not too sure which way to go.

So lads, I have 2 problems that need solving. Please help.

First of, FF related, I was going to get Rafael this week in place of Cashley, but he is suspended obviously, which DGW defender under 6m to get? Hangeland and Skrtel are the two that come to mind...?

The second is an age old teen problem. Prom dates. To begin with I asked this fit mate of mine. She said that she wasn't deciding on anyone yet, so I presumed it was a no, so I decided to ask her uglier mate, she said yes, but cos she aint exactly a looker, I asked her to keep shtum. So then my fit mate tells me that she'll go with me! Now what to do, the uglier one also quite obviously fanceys me so I'll be breaking her little heart (lol). Do I ditch her and go with the fit one? The fit one btw is better company.... Oh and there good mates with each other so I am risking going with no-one in a way

    Any advice appreciated!

wow thats a tough call mate. i would say stick with the first girl who accepted, that way there are no issues because you can tell the one she took too long to decide. otherwise to cancel with the girl who actually appreciated your offer and accepted, is a bit tricky. if the fit one was not willing to say yes straight away then she kinda loses points in my book.

Skrtel and is it just a prom date or do you want a relationship? If it's just a prom date stick with the one who said yes in the frist place, if it's a relationship you're after it sounds like you'd rather be with the fittie, going down that road is likely to cause all sorts of problems tho

13th Feb is GW 27 so he could/should be back, Cahill will be playing on the 18th in the last group game, if they lose that they will be out so he would be back, after that it goes into knockout games between 22nd and 29th so even if they get to the final he should still be back on time.

Having a quick look at the scores needed to be 100% safe in the Millionaire Club.

    No hit = 49
    1 hit = 51
    2 hits = 55
    3 hits = 59
    4 hits = 64
    5 hits or more = 67

Those who scored one less in these category are on the borderline & it's up to FPL for the weekly GW rank they are given. A few 48s survived whilst a few 48s didn't from memory. I guess they use past transfers etc to separate the 48s with no hits. Expecting close to 400 left after all the hits are taken into account from the starting number of 792.

So do you have to go through all the teams and check what hits they've taken? (well not all the teams but the ones who aren't really high or low scoring)

I'll have to check the team scores from 48-67 although I doubt many would go to the extent of taking 3 hits so 48-55 is more realistic. January scoring will help me find the hits etc.

I made it by rank in the rules. Obviously the numbers I used were generous this week but in other weeks they will be more realistic. The fairer way would be to add 4 for each hit as you say. It give people taking hits a better chance to survive.

Looks like I'm out then on 48 but a rank just over a million. Seems a bit unfair that some on 48 survive whilst others go, but them's the rules I suppose. Still it's my own fault I suppose, I shouldn't have benched Kuyt.

I currently plan to play Evatt (DGW) - Pantsil - Coleman (DGW)
Not exactly rock solid, but getting in Vidic/Evra would require a 4 pt. hit.

Looking at my opponents with both Vidic and Evra makes me nervous before the DGW, though. Two clean sheets, 24 pts...

Arsenal are playing Wigan at home, thats got 4-0 written all over it so Nasri should be involved in something + 4 points ahead already(no points hit)
