The Knee Jerk

With double game weeks aplenty, wildcards being dealt and delusions of grandeur in the minds of Fantasy Football managers across the globe, finding a bargain is going to be high on the list of things to do during the wildcard window in order to get the combination of players desired. How, therefore, might one go about finding a deal to quench the thirst for the best possible Fantasy football team for the forthcoming weeks?

Thankfully this weekend has presented or highlighted some areas which managers can exploit. Managers (real life ones) have shuffled the pack or brought in fresh faces and, in order to keep ahead of the game, it’s up to us to hunt the bargains down and take a gamble. This is the knee jerk so forgive me if these guys don’t play next week. Thou hast been warned.

Personally the area I like to be thrifty the most is in defence where you can find a bargain or two who might just pick up the odd 6 points by doing very little. The logic being that a cheap striker or midfield generally has to be half decent to get a goal or assist whereas a cheap defender only needs to play in a team with a moderate chance of a clean sheet in order to get an additional four points. So who has come to my attention over the weekend (and before) who might fit the bill? Read on people, read on;

Name: Kyle Walker Club: Aston Villa Position: Right Back Value: 4.0m

Walker has signed for Aston Villa on loan from Spurs for the remainder of the season. Whilst he had a quiet game today it is telling that Houllier threw him straight in at the deep end in the Midlands derby. A player with attacking intent, the England Under 19 international spent the early part of the season with QPR where he caught the eye for his marauding runs forward. If he can do the same for Villa, with the (albeit slim) chance of a cleansheet, at 4.0m he could be a real steal. Villa also have a double game week this weekend as well – Back of the net!

Name: Martin Kelly Club: Liverpool Position: Right Back Value: 4.2m

Since the return of King Kenneth one noticeable change has been the introduction of Martin Kelly at right back with the usual candidate Glen Johnson shifted to left back. Whilst there is no certainty this little arrangement will continue, Kelly has impressed in his recent starts and, before this, in Europe with the Reds. With another double game next week and the much maligned Paul Konchesky seemingly out of favour, Kelly may well be worthy of our attention. He even got an assist last week – Cashback!

Name: Johan Djourou Club: Arsenal Position: Centre Back (or midfield if you’re Chris Waddle) Value: 4.2m

He’s been chatted about a lot on the boards as a potential addition to our Fantasy Football teams and it’s understandable why. In the eight games that the Swiss international has finished this season he’s kept five clean sheets. He’s also picked up 6 points of the bonus variety as well which means he’s catching the eyes of the “experts’. Squillaci and Vermaelen would be the obvious threats to his place but they are currently both injured and, with favourable fixtures and a double game in the offing, now could be the time to invest. Jurassic Park!

Name: Stephen Carr Club: Birmingham Position: Right Back Value: 4.4m

Ok, he’s been about for ages and yeah his stats aren’t exactly amazing but look at Birmingham’s fixtures and consider the fact that the former Republic of Ireland international is a consistent in the heart (well on the right) of the Blues defence. Even if the right back only plays 90 minutes in game week 27 and concedes a goal in each thats a cool six points right there. Whilst we have to bear in mind fixture reshuffling due to cup commitments it doesn’t hurt to dream. Jackanackanory!

And by popular demand

Name: David Murphy Club: Birmingham Position: Left Back Value: 3.9m

He’s bald, looks a lot like Stephen Carr, plays for Birmingham (but on the opposite side) and offers the same potential as the vehicular named Irishman. The only difference is that he has been drafted in as replacement for the crocked Scott Dann, who looks set to miss the remainder of the season, with Ridgwell moving more centrally. At .5 less than the aforementioned Carr he offers greater value, but the risk could come should Alex McLeish look to the transfer market or should Martin Jiranek be given a nod centrally and Ridgewell moved out wide. Either way its a watch this space with Murphy. Smell my cheese!

Lads I know is late but hopeful I will get some contribution.

I am scouting Drogba replacement. The time has come. Me and my Che striker are gonna separate. There was some wonderfull times together, some great captaincy GW's and some dissapointments. There were GW's when I transfered out Tevez instead of Drogs, only cause as a Che fan I trusted in him. Drogs because of that Malaria thing everything is forgiven, even without the malaria. Maybe I will see u again in my team maybe not. However work on your fitness and I will be more than happy to have u in my fantasy team even with the armband again.

    1. Rooney - shit form but assured of two starts. And I remember last year and his captaincy in the double. It was enormous points. Great fixtures also.

    2. Berbatov - great value but in midterm and long term and I need him in short term. Not assured on both starts in the double so I think I am gonna pass.

    3. Torres - very fond of him, great fixtures also, but not in form. Hoping for some Kenny revival of the team, so potential but maybe only potential. Looks like a prime candidate at the moment. To bad he misses Gerrard for the double.

    4. RVP - his time will come but I think I am gonna pass this GW cause of the doubles. Even more I think that this will be Fabs GW.

    Opinion appreciated,
Cheers and good luck to everybody in the GW 24.

definite possibility with only 2 days between the games but surely utd will use a 4-4-2 formation against brum and blackpool and with rooney hardly a convincing goalscorer atm I'd fancy berbs to start both and maybe come off early for hernandez if he's not pulling his weight.

definitely not A. B or C could well pay off for a hit but it's hard to say which is better, I'd fancy tevez to outscore vdv this week but same goes for rooney to outscore berbatov.
If we knew berbs would start both games then i'd say B but we dont so I'd probably take a punt on C.

    1) Do nothing
    2) Berbatov off for Rooney...would be more comfortable since Rooney would most likely play both games
    3) One of Adam or Y Toure off for Walcott or Kuyt ...Blackpool might get nothing from the 2 games. But this just seems like points chasing

      Morning.

Had a gander at the Rooney v Berbatov debate. Checked the stats for last nights game. Berbatov didn't take one shot. At least Rooney managed four. Three on target & one blocked.

          Morning Bojan.

          Christ man don't you sleep?!

Lesson learned there I think. If it boils down to which player to bench, it will be the one who has a longer rest between games.

Probably apply the same thinking to captaining too. DGW aside of course.

Still. I've got a team pre-loaded with DGW players. Rafael seeing yellow twice last night removed the 'Berbatov v Rooney' decision off the table. Vidic & Berbatov for a 4 point hit. 9 DGW players + Fabregas & VDV

i am swaying towards ferdinand and rooney could do vidic and berba too. hmmm

I'm no Utd expert. But Vidic seems more assured of starting both games over Ferdinand.

When Utd had games on Jan 1st & 4th, Vidic laid both games, Ferdinand only the first. Vidic also offers a small goal threat too.

If I had the option? Neither striker has much form coming into the gameweek. I reckon Rooney is the safer option of the two, being on penalties.

Haven't watched Chelsea games of late, but if you think he's on good form from what you've seen then keep. But I would advise you to think about the teams with double gameweeks in the coming weeks, you can get good midfielders there who would score you double, even if it's for the short term

Is this worth a 12 point hit? Current team is
    Foster/Schwarzer
    Rafael, Kolarov, Coleman, ShawX, Foley
    Nani, VDV, Fab, Adam, Albrighton
    Drog, Tev, Carroll

Was thinking of doing Schwarzer > Stockdale, Kolarov > Walker, Drog > Rooney and Carroll > RVP

Or could just bench Rafael, Kolarov and Carroll and just do Drog > Rooney and still have a strong team but might find it hard to get RVP into my team as he will prob rise a lot this week.

Chaps, having a Dempsey or Nzogbia dilemma.

Most people seem to be going Nzogbia but they have one reasonable fixture, one very tough one. Where as Fulham seem to have two reasonable ones. I know gets the baps but Dempsey isn't adverse to them and plays higher up the pitch, plus he's a DGW don!

    Thoughts?

Tough one. Im the only one in my league with Nzog but im seriously considering a change to Dempsey with my Wc this week.

Fulham have 2/3 at home and and the away game is liverpool who are shite at the moment. Idea is not to make any changes the week after the WC and i would rather have dempsey than Nzogbia in gw 25.

Morning chaps, its WC time for me. Having a torrid time of it of late so this is my chance for a fresh start and perhaps mount a late challenge for my leagues.

First up Keepers, not really had much luck with them to be honest, thinking i might just find a pair to stick with for the rest of the season. Firstly what do you think to said tactic? Secondly if you had to pick a GK pair for the rest of the season who would you go with?

Foster - points regardless of whether Brum get cleansheets.
Stockdale for now - cheap as 'thin strips of deep-fried potato'.

I was thinking 'the aresnal keeper' whom ever that may be, but this would involve switching until you get the nailed down one. Rotates great with Jussi, but Bolton haven't been keeping cleanies of late.

Fair enough on stockdale, but i'm looking for long term. Would you have Schwarzer when he was back?
