Any time we make a judgement about a given player, whether at the top or bottom end of the market, we make an assessment of their relativite risk and reward. Whether you’re a disciple of statistical analysis or you prefer to make your judgements based on the games you see, we’re still making the same assessments with regards to a player’s playing time, team-mates, positional deployment and a myriad of other factors. When sorting through this data we need to highlight the most relevant points and be careful to distinguish risk from uncertainty.

Risk is generally defined as something you can put a value on. Though statistical models are far from a magic bullet solution to forecasting, looking at factors such as shots taken and touches inside the box can all add up to give suggested probabilities of success for a given player, which over a period of time should lead to success. Uncertainty, however, is a trickier animal. Predicting whether or not Sergio Aguero will start a given game or whether a late injury to Nemandja Vidic will dent his defensive team-mates’ value are events which don’t seem to follow a logical pattern and thus are harder to quantify and deal with. All players have an element of both risk and uncertainty, but by reducing our exposure to unquantifiable uncertainty, we at least give ourselves a chance at correctly valuing the risk we’re taking.

This week’s player comes with risk – he wouldn’t be in this article if he didn’t – but the uncertainty appears to be as manageable as most players, particularly those in his price bracket. Though it took him a while to get going, since breaking into the first team Adam Le Fondre has played all but 10 minutes in four straight starts and with an uninspiring or injured collection of alternatives to choose from up front, Le Fondre looks about as set in his respective starting line up as anyone. Now, of course, there is risk here, as one would expect for a 4.9 investment, but even that is much lower than you’d expect.

Literally? Ohhh in that case I'll try and help 🙂

I have those 3 and currently going with Michu - Sessegnon is a differential on his own, so no need to risk (C) unless you're playing serious catch up.

    Evening all

Team so far without any changes:

    Bego Jussi
    Mertes, Riise, Gorks, O'Brien, Cuellar
    Michu, Sterling, Fellaini, Carloza (Bale)
    Berba, RVP, Tevez

    OPtions:
    1. Do nothing and play a 4-3-3
    2. Bale----> Sess (bought Bale last week so no loss if he is bought back)
    3. Gorkss ----> Morrison
    4. Bego vs Jussi (can Bego keep another CS away??)

    Cheers!

    Evening gents!

The news on Fletcher isn't too encouraging, I don't think he will play tomorrow but at least it is likely he will play vs Reading so still a decent option for the gwk (If you already own him). At least it makes the Sessegnon vs Fletcher for captain decision easier..

Sod it going to hand RVP the armband, it's not often he is a diff on here.

Been looking at the stats which make Mata (rotation/60 minute risk) and Cazorla (misfiring) look the best options.

As has been pointed out Michu is playing a supprisingly solid NOR defence. He can score vs anyone but i'm worried about no goals + 1 yc.

& playing O'Brien over Jose Enrique. JE is one of the most likely to score for but I think WH will win 2-0 or it will be 0-0 draw.

Looks like I'll be trotting out the old reliable 5-3-2 this week.

With Bale, Walcott and Suarez out, I used my FT to bring in Fellaini for Bale. Unfortunately I'm now stuck with 2 Everton midfielders (Pienaar who is being shipped out next week), and I don't fancy doubling up.

Heres to lots of 0-0's this week 🙂

    Greetings smart people.
Should I keep Walcott or get Sessegnon?
I'm an Arsenal fan. So I play 3 players from Arsenal everytime. So I suck in this game.
    Now I want to succeed...

Friday at last! Could really do with a few suggestions for tomorrow's team, so if anyone is feeling generous i'd appreciate any advice

    Current:
    Federici
    Ivanovic Enrique Cuellar Demel
    Michu(vc) Taarabt Sessengnon(c)
    RVP Berbatov Tevez

    Begovic Cameron Bale Maloney

    1 FT 1.8M in bank

    Concerns:

Bale out for 2 weeks; so would like to replace, but with who?
Maloney still flagged not sure when he'll be back
Tevez probably won't start vs MU

Thanks to anyone who takes the time to comment 😀

I'd definitely replace Bale, it's a lot of money to be sitting on your bench for a couple of weeks. Even if it's just to take a punt on Robson-Kanu for a week before putting Bale back in 😉

Cheers Triggs, concerned about having too much DGW cover then; GW 17 Rea v Ars and MU vs Sun; think you're right about Bale though

    Simply question: A or B? 2 FT and .7M

    a) Hughes, Hangeland, Berbatov (current)

    b) Shorey, Cuellar, Ba

Looks like a good punt, nice one for putting your money where your mouth is!

I also like your new leaf, Leaf.

Don't kill me people, but I brought Morrison (Reading) in for a 4pt hit. My team has been ravaged with injury and suspension and I cant afford for Rafael not to play against Man City. Plus, I've been looking at moving him out for a while and recovering some money. And with Morrison at just 4.0 and racking up points and always looking dangerous when up for corners and set pieces. I thought I'd get on this train early.

But the real "crazy" talk in all of this, is, Im thinking of captaining him. Because Im struggling to see better options with the team I have this GW. I was enticed by Berbatov at first, but I've been put of with the Ruiz injury and loss of form. Fellaini is a possibility, but Michu is a no go for me this week, Norwich are tight defensively away from home, and Michu has struggled in a few games at home against well organized defences, of which there aren't many about in the league now!

The reason why I'm contemplating Morrison, is not for just the returns and attacking potential, but for a number of reasons, the DGW and Reading "could" pull out a CS for once, in a boring game. And he has been picking up bonus points for good performances. Reading have hardly looked brilliant at the back, but there is obvious output when going forward, and defenders are getting in on the act as well at Reading.

+ Defenders can rack up points in a number of ways that forwards and midfielders cant.

Is Morrison a stupid captain choice? (I apologize for long post, I dont post very often compared to some of you 😉 )

No need to apologise, Craney - everyone has their own ideas and who's to say they are wrong?

Unfortunately, I don't share your confidence in Reading cs - the evidence so far suggests that they will continue to leak goals

Morrison is an interesting prospect and great value at 4.0. However, defenders tend to score very infrequently (which is why the likes of Verm, Vert, et al need to be avoided) and backing them to score in any given gwk is a huge gamble.

These sort of risks cost you places in the long run. As last year's winner said: "Avoid hunches-they rarely work out."

      Best of luck.
