The Knee Jerk

With double game weeks aplenty, wildcards being dealt and delusions of grandeur in the minds of Fantasy Football managers across the globe, finding a bargain is going to be high on the list of things to do during the wildcard window in order to get the combination of players desired. How, therefore, might one go about finding a deal to quench the thirst for the best possible Fantasy football team for the forthcoming weeks?

Thankfully this weekend has presented or highlighted some areas which managers can exploit. Managers (real life ones) have shuffled the pack or brought in fresh faces and, in order to keep ahead of the game, it’s up to us to hunt the bargains down and take a gamble. This is the knee jerk so forgive me if these guys don’t play next week. Thou hast been warned.

Personally the area I like to be thrifty the most is in defence where you can find a bargain or two who might just pick up the odd 6 points by doing very little. The logic being that a cheap striker or midfield generally has to be half decent to get a goal or assist whereas a cheap defender only needs to play in a team with a moderate chance of a clean sheet in order to get an additional four points. So who has come to my attention over the weekend (and before) who might fit the bill? Read on people, read on;

Name: Kyle Walker Club: Aston Villa Position: Right Back Value: 4.0m

Walker has signed for Aston Villa on loan from Spurs for the remainder of the season. Whilst he had a quiet game today it is telling that Houllier threw him straight in at the deep end in the Midlands derby. A player with attacking intent, the England Under 19 international spent the early part of the season with QPR where he caught the eye for his marauding runs forward. If he can do the same for Villa, with the (albeit slim) chance of a cleansheet, at 4.0m he could be a real steal. Villa also have a double game week this weekend as well – Back of the net!

Name: Martin Kelly Club: Liverpool Position: Right Back Value: 4.2m

Since the return of King Kenneth one noticeable change has been the introduction of Martin Kelly at right back with the usual candidate Glen Johnson shifted to left back. Whilst there is no certainty this little arrangement will continue, Kelly has impressed in his recent starts and, before this, in Europe with the Reds. With another double game next week and the much maligned Paul Konchesky seemingly out of favour, Kelly may well be worthy of our attention. He even got an assist last week – Cashback!

Name: Johan Djourou Club: Arsenal Position: Centre Back (or midfield if you’re Chris Waddle) Value: 4.2m

He’s been chatted about a lot on the boards as a potential addition to our Fantasy Football teams and it’s understandable why. In the eight games that the Swiss international has finished this season he’s kept five clean sheets. He’s also picked up 6 points of the bonus variety as well which means he’s catching the eyes of the “experts’. Squillaci and Vermaelen would be the obvious threats to his place but they are currently both injured and, with favourable fixtures and a double game in the offing, now could be the time to invest. Jurassic Park!

Name: Stephen Carr Club: Birmingham Position: Right Back Value: 4.4m

Ok, he’s been about for ages and yeah his stats aren’t exactly amazing but look at Birmingham’s fixtures and consider the fact that the former Republic of Ireland international is a consistent in the heart (well on the right) of the Blues defence. Even if the right back only plays 90 minutes in game week 27 and concedes a goal in each thats a cool six points right there. Whilst we have to bear in mind fixture reshuffling due to cup commitments it doesn’t hurt to dream. Jackanackanory!

And by popular demand

Name: David Murphy Club: Birmingham Position: Left Back Value: 3.9m

He’s bald, looks a lot like Stephen Carr, plays for Birmingham (but on the opposite side) and offers the same potential as the vehicular named Irishman. The only difference is that he has been drafted in as replacement for the crocked Scott Dann, who looks set to miss the remainder of the season, with Ridgwell moving more centrally. At .5 less than the aforementioned Carr he offers greater value, but the risk could come should Alex McLeish look to the transfer market or should Martin Jiranek be given a nod centrally and Ridgewell moved out wide. Either way its a watch this space with Murphy. Smell my cheese!

After doing a check and a clean up of the Millionaire Club, there looks like 464 out of 792 will survive the chop. Scores of 41-44 have already been deleted along with some random scores. Scores 45-47 & some 48s along with a couple over 48 that took hits will be deleted in 24 hours just in case a change of score occurs e.g. K.Toure goal or Jara assist. Scores of 40 or below will remain on the table due to the time needed to delete them for the time being. If they score well this week then they will be deleted as soon as possible with a gap between survivors & teams knocked out being at least 8 points to make it obvious. Good luck this week to all the survivors. 🙂

Drogba to a DGW striker will be 1 trade. I guess I could get a DGW defender or a midfielder to replace Barton. I would be weak in defence though. Welbeck might be fit & vs Blackpool, I would probably play him over Barton anyway. Rafael has really changed my planning.

          Krul is dead wood.
Question mark over Konchesky's long term staring place.
Rafael will only play one of the DGW games. Regrettably the tougher (defensively speaking) of the two.
Kolarov is under the threat of rotation from Zabaleta.

Drogba & Barton out for DGW players. WC next week. That's what I'd do anyway.

They got found out, K. Got zero pass rush on Sanchez and didn't protect Brady.

Red zone defence sucked too. Jets went 4-4 inside the Pats 20. That can't happen if you want to win playoff games.

Brady threw a horrible pick that took points off the board for the Pats when it was still scoreless and that pretty much set the tone.

Crumpler dropping a sure TD didn't help, either.

They need to draft a pass rusher who can get an interior rush and a new center.

Loads of draft picks to do all that.
A whole swathe of the team is yummily young and WILL win next year.
Brady only has 2 possibly 3 more TOP years in him, so will be extra-determined from here on in.

Only have 5 Double GWers this week (Stockdale, Kelly, Nani, N'Zog and DJ Campbell). Given this, is is worth doing these 3 transfers for an 8 point hit?

Lampard, DJ & Tevez -> Adam, Rooney & Torres

Would then have 7 doubles with Coleman, Djourou, Nasri & RVP...

Not sure what to do now. Got £3m in bank and was going to do Cole to Rafael and Davies to either Torres or Rooney for a 4 pt hit.

Obviously can't do that now. I have enough to do Davies to Berbs or Van Persie and no hit.

Already have Kingson, Hangeland, Adam, Nani and N'Zogbia (and possibly Konchesky) for the DGW. The 4 pointer would give me 7 DGW players, but I'm not sure I need that many now.

Davies at home might also get some joy against Chelsea.

Half of me thinks Van Persie for no hit is the best option. Other half thinks get Berbs just to be on safe side as he may play both games.

Has Berbatov got it in him to out-point RVP over the next gameweek? Yes he has. Will he is an entirely different question altogether.

Personally speaking about this time last season I was reluctant to pay points & bring in Malouda/Lampard who had a DGW. Never again.

I might well be taking something of a scattergun approach here. But I'm covering as many bases as is practical. Hence Tevez out Berbatov in.

Berbs could go mad against Blackpool. Or he could do nothing.

I think he'll start both games but come off early. If I take i hit it'd be for Rooney or Torres. Getting RVP would give me him and Tevez up front, with Carroll on bench.

Not an altogether untidy strike force. Planning to play wildcard in GW27.

          Sounds like a plan.

Quiet a few are using their WC next gameweek. To get the players in early & perhaps roll over transfers allowing 2 to be made in GW28.

That didn't appeal to me initially. That's exactly what I'm going to do now.

    VdV | N'Zogbia | Nani | Adam
    Torres | Berbatov
Sub: Nasri | Carroll | Coleman

Plus side: Would give me 10 DGW players
    Negative: Would mean benching Nasri

I will be wildcarding in GW26

    Good or bad idea?

Get Dempsey and Berba in. You could even get Rooney in as he was getting back to his best yday. Plus he will take d spot kicks. But if you look at the options you have given, then Dempsey and Berba sound like a good option

Agree. But (and its a big but), I think he might not be a bad option with the DGW coming up. Berba might be benched but Wazza will start for sure

Berbatov & Rooney have little form coming into the DGW.

Still, I'm not risking Berbatov (the only one of the two funds will allow) or Rooney scoring big & not having either.

i have a dilemma. Plan on using WC GW27. Thought it wise to load a team for the doubles and triple. Im wondering if its worth the potential one week haul to alter a team that will take weeks to put back to “normal”. Such as having a birm keeper and defender.

I have a WC that could look like this, i know there are cheaper options in defence but for sake of arguement:

    Foster (3 games)
Begovic (good couple fixtures following weeks)

    Baines (2), r Johnson (3), clichy (2), Coleman (2), simpson (2)

    Fabregas(2), Adam(2), Brunt(2), vdv(2), nani(keeper with 2 next gw)

    RVP (2), odemwingie (2), Carroll(2)
    6.5 in bank
i know i cant play all of them but i already have coleman, simpson, vdv, brunt, adam, fabs and carroll. the extra money can buy a chelsea player for first transfer following week for their double.

is this a good use of WC or am i mad?

If you WC pre GW27. You can roll over say, 2 free transfers. Make 3 transfer & only take a 4 point hit post GW27.

I guess im wondering if the overall philosophy is sound. WCing for DGWs rather than for strongest long-term squad. I spent 3 weeks bringing in konchesky, gerrard and reina, to prepare for their DGW and that proved to be an EPIC FAIL.

      Some chalkbaord stats -

Torres had 8 shots. 3 on target, 3 off & 2 blocks. All but two from within the penalty box.

Rooney had 7 shots. 4 on target, 3 off. 4 of those shots from outside the penalty box.

    Torres, Berbatov, Odemwingie

    1.1 in the bank

Anyone know how the champions league games relate to the gameweeks, in terms of what week the games fall between? Why I'm asking is if Arsenal play Barca around the time of some favourable league fixtures I can see players like RVP gettin rested in the league and Chamakh gettin a run out, that would put me off RVP.
