634x258 The Stock Check

Michu delivers again to punish those who placed the captaincy on a Sunderland arm, as Fernando Torres steps up to spank Martin O’Neill’s beleaguered Black Cats. With Reading blanking at Southampton, this was a day of double Gameweek disappointment, with many of us now looking forlornly for midweek returns. For now, here’s the Stock Check on Saturday six offerings…

On the Up

Fernando Torres
An outstanding day for the Spaniard who suggested he could yet be revived under the stewardship of Rafa Benitez. A calm volleyed finish handed Chelsea the lead at the Stadium of Light, with a converted a spot-kick notching a second before half-time. The penalty was taken by Torres despite Eden Hazard being on the pitch – clearly, having missed in Europe in midweek, the Belgian has now relinquished duties to Torres which boosts his stock. It remains to be seen if he keeps them once Frank Lampard earn starts. With an assist thrown in, today was Torres’ biggest Fantasy points haul of the season.

Juan Mata
A sixth goal of the season and his second in consecutive matches continued to see Mata stand head and shoulders above Eden Hazard as the weapon of choice in Chelsea’s midfield. A blank in Gameweek 17 will temper investment but, despite Hazard’s assist for Torres’ opener, Mata currently looks set to earn back some of the ownership he lost having been subject to recent rotation.

Michu
How much higher can this man’s stock really climb? Michu is now the leading scorer in the Premier League with 12 goals, an outstanding return for a midfielder who began the season priced at just 6.5. He has since exploded but even at 7.8, there are few players who appear as essential as the Swansea man.

Sebastian Bassong
A third goal of the season – all of which have arrived in a four Gameweek spell, continued Bassong’s incredible run of form. Firmly established in the Canaries backline, his threat from set-plays, coupled with a newfound solidity under Chris Hughton, is shaping the former Spurs man into a bargain at 4.7 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

Robert Snodgrass
A superb deadball strike followed on from two assists in the Canaries unlikely win at Swansea, as the former Leeds man took his turn to stand out amongst the Canaries midfield. Fantasy managers are still struggling to find a single target in Hughton’s outfit but Snodgrass put in a strong application today with a quality contribution and a big points haul.

Jason Puncheon
A second goal of the season for Puncheon who has now started the last six for Nigel Adkins’ side. With five assists to his name and a price tag of just 4.6, Puncheon continues to thrive and emerge as a very strong budget option in the FPL, which could allow Raheem Sterling owners to cash in on the Liverpool man’s recent price hike. A blank in Gameweek 17 could keep Puncheon’s ownership in check, for now.

Nathaniel Clyne
The young full-back delivered his second assist of the season for Puncheon’s strike, whilst registering a second clean sheet in four matches. In that four Gameweek spell, Southampton have conceded just two goals. At 4.0, Clyne is another budget defender in ascendency.

Adam Johnson
A second league goal of the season provided a consolation for Martin O’Neill’s side in the defeat to Chelsea, whilst rewarding those who risked drafting in the winger over other targets in the Sunderland lineup.

The Villa Defence
A clean sheet against Stoke was perhaps anticipated but doesn’t detract from the fact that Paul Lambert’s side have now conceded just a single goal in their last four league outings. Away games at Liverpool and Chelsea up next, will doubtless dampen the enthusiasm but Villa’s back four is one to watch.

Mikel Arteta
Two goals from the spot takes Arteta to three for the season and may just have Fantasy managers taking notice. At 7.7 in the FPL, attention seems unlikely but, in the Sky Sports effort, where Arteta is the leading bonus point scorer, his stock is going through the roof.

Going Down

Steven Fletcher
The ankle injury sustained at Norwich last weekend kept the Scot out of the home clash with Chelsea and reduced his double Gameweek to a single. He’ll hopefully be in contention for the midweek meeting with Reading, to offer at least some reward for those who backed him for the Black Cats’ double-header.

The Sunderland Defence
Breached early on by Chelsea, hopes of strong returns from investment in the likes of Simon Mignolet and Carlos Cuellar were dashed, as the visitors ran riot. The Black Cats have now conceded 13 goals in their last seven with just one clean sheet in that run – against the bottom club QPR. Reading will fancy their chances on Tuesday.

The Swansea Defence
Having looked to be showing an improvement in recent weeks, keeping two clean sheets in the last four, today they were shambolic and had no answer to Norwich’s crosses and aerial threat. Scout Pick, Ben Davies, did at least deliver the assist for Michu’s strike.

Liam Ridgewell
Restored to the side post “toilet-gate”, the left-back lasted just a few minutes at the Emirates before being forced off through injury. We await the prognosis but, with obliging fixtures to come, Ridgewell’s owners will be concerned.

Adam Lallana
Another injury victim, the Saints’ skipper was forced off in the first-half of the clash with Reading with a reported knee problem. With a blank in Gameweek 17, sales of the talented midfielder look likely, regardless of his prognosis.

Sean Morrison
The young centre-back had looked so promising in his run of starts for Reading, notching twice from set-plays. An injury sustained in the defeat to Southampton could now make Morrison a doubt for the midweek trip to Sunderland to frustrate those who took a chance on his potential for the double Gameweek.

Oscar & Eden Hazard
Oscar was always third in the pecking order when it came to Chelsea’s three musketeers but now, under Rafa’s regime, he has perhaps slipped further, despite a sparkling appearance from the bench. Victor Moses was again preferred as a starter at Sunderland, for the third game running. As for Eden Hazard, he seems to have relinquished spot-kick duties and his owners had to watch Juan Mata convert his second goal in consecutive matches to take him to six for the season, leaving Hazard in his wake.

Cesar Azpilicueta
We anticipated that the Spaniard’s stay in Chelsea’s lineup was limited and today we got further evidence to suggest that is the case. Relegated to the bench Gary Cahill and David Luiz starting and Branislav Ivanovic at right-back, it seems that Azpilicueta is destined for a cameo role, particularly considering that John Terry is nearing a return.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Fellaini is on the bench as well. But the one to replace him was Clyne at last minute. Deadline was passed confirm did not work and Now I may get 9+baps from Clyne. Don't know I am to be happy or sad now. 😀

I should have taken the hit to get Bale out before he dropped and before Michu had those 3 rises. Even if Michu didn't score any. I could afford the hit with the ML standings...

Yeah even the words heavy hitter don't do him justice because he is outscoring any heavy hitter midfielder this year or last year. A prolific striker classified as a midfielder. As I see it he would still be worth buying at 9m. And then some.

People expect some regression because they think he can't keep up the scoring rate. But he is getting too many chances to regress much.

Walcott -> Michu last week. Probably my worst transfer in the history of playing this game.

    1) Any chance of Clyne getting off my bench? Need 1 of these lot to not play: Hughes, Enrique, Silva, Fellaini, Fletcher, Ba, RVP

    2) Best transfer move this week? Fletcher -> Suarez?

    Jaask, Federici
    Enrique, Cuellar, Hughes, Clyne, McCartney
    Silva, Walcott, Sessegnon, Fellaini, Taarabt
    RVP, Ba, Fletcher

United are poor in defence and so are city too i believe.

Obviously if you'd asked this a week or two ago, many people would've laughed in your face. But I actually think it's a difficult decision now. Think Tevez will be rotated even more with no CL or Europa to keep all their strikers occupied and I think under Rafa, Chelsea will play more Torres' strengths.

However, after careful thought I'm going with neither Torres or Tevez, and throwing Defoe in there 😉

Would probably make them park the bus then!

I don't think city's passing has looked so poor for a long time. Their attacking play is unimaginative.
The united attack is still gelling having not quite got comfortable with the formation switches.

If anything, the attacking potential looks reduced this year relative to last tbh.

Going by what matters, recent form, I stand by them still gelling. The 0 and 1 goals scored against Norwich and west ham, plus they failed to score against qprs 2nd team until the 60th minute or so having gone behind, and I think the subs were required to get the goals. Reading game was a massacre of course, but arsenal scored 7 against them for crying out loud.

The fact that they can still score lots of goals when they haven't gelled yet is testament to their attacking ability. When they do find form they will be simply unstoppable. They are gelling more with every game

I only assess them from the neutral position of a fantasy investor, not as a fan, and can't guess how it will turn out for sure. But yes they haven't gelled yet. There is a lot of player rotation and attendant formation changes. This will continue with Anderson out again, Val due to return, Kagawa later, who knows with Nani.

Could turn out great. But not the finished product at the moment and frm watching the games I should think you'd agree.

The goals are spread throughout the team so looking at it from a non-fantasy perspective you may come to the conclusion that United don't score as much as they should. Yet they are still head and shoulders above any other team in the PL at the moment when it comes to scoring goals. The stats speak for themselves.

I know, and i will be monitoring him. Thing is Walcott is just so explosive in FPL terms, and nobody in my leagues will get him. I`m currently lagging a bit, so i need to get in on the good ones a bit ahead of the others. Like i did with Enrique. Get the points before everybody even considers it.

      Torres' gynecologist...

AHEM. It does look to me like Torres' service is improving, which is linked to him getting into scoring positions as opposed to providing positions. Put it this way, I think he could rival Tevez for a striker spot in which case he has to be considered.

If Mata was not on such good form, it would be a no brainer for Chelsea cover. Having both a squad is an interesting option after blank.

I honestly did not pay too close attention to "rafa rotation" in his last stint as manager. How bad was it????? Surely Mata is nailed on(?) He seems to be giving Torres every opportunity to gain his confidence back.....Is Torres the only one exempt from rotation??? If so, he is a very intriguing option and one that needs serious consideration.

Rotated the squad 99 games in a row as Liverpool-manager. When confronted with it on the presser before what woulda been the 100th straight game with rotation, he named the same starting 11 just for lawls. Class.

To answer your question, yes Mata would look to be nailed on, but they have a ton of options there. Especially now with Moses finding some form, and Marin back in the fray. Torres is literally the only striker they have, and Rafa loves Torres, so im thinking he`s pretty safe.

No, not really. Torres and Gerrad played pretty much every game, the link between them was crucial to our success. To be fair he pretty much just did like a couple of rotations here and there every game. The core in our team was pretty much the same every game, Reina/Hyppia/Carra/Masch/Alonso/Gerrard and Torres played a LOT of games.

Similar, yes. But theres still differences. Torres was far better back then. Gerrard clearly superior to Mata, also a lot better physichally. Lastly, Chelsea have better options other than that link than the Liverpool team had.

ha, superior? Fair enough as you're a pool fan but Mata is one of the best midfielders I've ever seen play and he's only 24. Wait until he's had an entire career before saying Gerrard is clearly superior me thinks.

I think Mata and Torres have a connection and they will thrive on that. Torres is certainly nailed on and I believe Mata will be for the most part nailed on apart from the odd rest. I can live with that because Mata is a supreme FPL asset. His assist potential is through the roof and he is now scoring more goals. 6 goals already (matching last year's tally) and even then he hasn't even played all 16 games. His form is simply phenomenal.

Mata is nailed on, as in he is an important first team member. But as we have already seen under both RDM and Rafa, Mata is a player who tires easily (and funnily enough looks a lot older than his 24yrs) and needs a lot of rest time.

I expect Mata to be rested every 3/4 games which is annoying as an owner. Seems he gets dropped for a lot of the easier games, which Chelsea then go on to draw or lose without him 😕

I think an important lesson has been learnt in the last 8 games. Their form dipped significantly by messing about with rotation. It's clear what their strengths and they need to find a balance. If they are going to keep up the momentum and finish top 4 I think they need to play key players consistently. That's why I believe Mata won't be rested as much like the last while.

As far as athletecism goes, Mata`s slacking a LOT compared to his competition. But he`s got superior tactical, technical and creative skills. His physique will make Rafa rotate him though, 3/4 games sounds reasonable.

If Mata gets rotated a lot and Torres doesn't then it could be a good option. Having a big 3 up front of RVP, Suarez & Torres can be offset by having good value players in midfield instead of big hitters such as all 3 of Michu, Fellaini & Nolan.

United to sign ANY central midfileder.........I hope. But I wish for this every single transfer window.

Tell you something, from a fantasy perspective, last January transfer window will take some beating. I got Siggy, Papa Cisse and Jellyfish and rocketed up the ranking post Jan wildcard and managed to finish inside the top 2k. Cant see it happenening again though, sadly.

Extreme lack of confidence, old fashioned tactics, lack of ideas, predictability, lack of a big star to win us games, too many of the same kind of players. Just really depressing at the moment. I just hope we can come fourth bottom by the end of the season. I hope MON is still there despite this poor form. I think he's taken on a difficult job and it would be a shame if we were to sack him because the team was not doing it's job well enough. I think it really comes down to the players not having enough know how.

I generally think we just haven't got the ball to him enough this year. It's such a contrast to last year...Sess used to perform so well down the middle and dribbling past defenders....it seemed like we always got the ball to him.

I don't think it's necessarily that Sess is off form but that we simply aren't gelling as a side enough. There's no fluidity. It's really back to basics stuff but it ends up so boring and dull. Then there's brief sparks of magic when we bother to attack.

Central midfield is awful. No creativity, loses possession a lot. Fletcher doesnt move enough off the ball. Wingers are quite decent, with some talent on the fullbacks. Sessegnon on horrible form this year makes a big difference too.

As a Utd fan I must say I'm very worried. Our DF is a shambles and our MF is now missing our only two players who actually bring a bit of energy and verve (Ando & Cleverly).

A MF of Giggs/Carrick/Scholes is way too pedestrian to be playing a team of Citys quality

Im fairly certain Jones will start, and he`ll add some much needed dynamic to that central area. Your other main problem is width. Valencia out, Nani out, Young way off form. Wellbeck is no such thing as a winger.

Meh, it could happen i guess, but i think he`ll roll out with Jones/Carrick, Young and Wellbeck on the right, with Rooney helping out as a CAM with RVP up top. Chicharito waiting if hes needed towards the end.

Poor WC team imo. Wouldnt bother with a Southampton DFer. Wouldnt have Ba or Snodgrass (not saying they are terrible picks, but I think you can find better). And the cherry on the cake is having Guthrie anywhere near your team. He's a complete waste of time when you can spend less than half a mil more and get Puncheon

Please help, i'm happy with my team score, but next GW could be a disaster with this team:

    Bego/Jussi
    Huth Enrique Cuellar Davies McCartney
    Mata Sess Michu Sterling Punch
    Rvp Suarez Tevez

    4,3 mil on the bank

I was looking to save my transfer for GW 18 to do Sess> Bale and Tevez > Aguero, however....
    - Mata and Punch blank
    - McCartney still not playing
    - Cuellar and Davies has very very terrible fixture

I feel like I need to do a transfer now to save my GW 17 but I can only use 0,7 mil to make my initial transfer plan work on GW 18, any suggestion?

I also have Mata, Punch, McCart & Cuellar. And to be honest I have no idea what I'm going to do. I'm sitting on Puncheon that much is for sure. But Mata might make way for someone so I can play 4MFers next week.

Think I will wait and see for more news on Bale/Walcott next week and if either will be back then I might do Mata>Bale/Walcott. But I'm by no means decided on this

Cuellar out for me also. I'm gonna get Mertesacker or perhaps Nastasic. Sagna is a rotation risk/injury prone, neither is Caulker nailed on with BAE coming back.

      Sagna.

I actually own Caulker and not Sagna. But with the imminent return of BAE, I just think Caulker is in danger of warming the bench most weeks with Vertonghen slotting into CB and Caulk/Gallas/Dawson all fighting for one spot

The best Christmas present would be Isco to City. All for the loan back to Malaga to finish out the CL campaign. They've been fantastic.

        Nolan / Mata / Puncheon / Fellaini / Bale
