634x258 The Stock Check

Michu delivers again to punish those who placed the captaincy on a Sunderland arm, as Fernando Torres steps up to spank Martin O’Neill’s beleaguered Black Cats. With Reading blanking at Southampton, this was a day of double Gameweek disappointment, with many of us now looking forlornly for midweek returns. For now, here’s the Stock Check on Saturday six offerings…

On the Up

Fernando Torres
An outstanding day for the Spaniard who suggested he could yet be revived under the stewardship of Rafa Benitez. A calm volleyed finish handed Chelsea the lead at the Stadium of Light, with a converted a spot-kick notching a second before half-time. The penalty was taken by Torres despite Eden Hazard being on the pitch – clearly, having missed in Europe in midweek, the Belgian has now relinquished duties to Torres which boosts his stock. It remains to be seen if he keeps them once Frank Lampard earn starts. With an assist thrown in, today was Torres’ biggest Fantasy points haul of the season.

Juan Mata
A sixth goal of the season and his second in consecutive matches continued to see Mata stand head and shoulders above Eden Hazard as the weapon of choice in Chelsea’s midfield. A blank in Gameweek 17 will temper investment but, despite Hazard’s assist for Torres’ opener, Mata currently looks set to earn back some of the ownership he lost having been subject to recent rotation.

Michu
How much higher can this man’s stock really climb? Michu is now the leading scorer in the Premier League with 12 goals, an outstanding return for a midfielder who began the season priced at just 6.5. He has since exploded but even at 7.8, there are few players who appear as essential as the Swansea man.

Sebastian Bassong
A third goal of the season – all of which have arrived in a four Gameweek spell, continued Bassong’s incredible run of form. Firmly established in the Canaries backline, his threat from set-plays, coupled with a newfound solidity under Chris Hughton, is shaping the former Spurs man into a bargain at 4.7 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

Robert Snodgrass
A superb deadball strike followed on from two assists in the Canaries unlikely win at Swansea, as the former Leeds man took his turn to stand out amongst the Canaries midfield. Fantasy managers are still struggling to find a single target in Hughton’s outfit but Snodgrass put in a strong application today with a quality contribution and a big points haul.

Jason Puncheon
A second goal of the season for Puncheon who has now started the last six for Nigel Adkins’ side. With five assists to his name and a price tag of just 4.6, Puncheon continues to thrive and emerge as a very strong budget option in the FPL, which could allow Raheem Sterling owners to cash in on the Liverpool man’s recent price hike. A blank in Gameweek 17 could keep Puncheon’s ownership in check, for now.

Nathaniel Clyne
The young full-back delivered his second assist of the season for Puncheon’s strike, whilst registering a second clean sheet in four matches. In that four Gameweek spell, Southampton have conceded just two goals. At 4.0, Clyne is another budget defender in ascendency.

Adam Johnson
A second league goal of the season provided a consolation for Martin O’Neill’s side in the defeat to Chelsea, whilst rewarding those who risked drafting in the winger over other targets in the Sunderland lineup.

The Villa Defence
A clean sheet against Stoke was perhaps anticipated but doesn’t detract from the fact that Paul Lambert’s side have now conceded just a single goal in their last four league outings. Away games at Liverpool and Chelsea up next, will doubtless dampen the enthusiasm but Villa’s back four is one to watch.

Mikel Arteta
Two goals from the spot takes Arteta to three for the season and may just have Fantasy managers taking notice. At 7.7 in the FPL, attention seems unlikely but, in the Sky Sports effort, where Arteta is the leading bonus point scorer, his stock is going through the roof.

Going Down

Steven Fletcher
The ankle injury sustained at Norwich last weekend kept the Scot out of the home clash with Chelsea and reduced his double Gameweek to a single. He’ll hopefully be in contention for the midweek meeting with Reading, to offer at least some reward for those who backed him for the Black Cats’ double-header.

The Sunderland Defence
Breached early on by Chelsea, hopes of strong returns from investment in the likes of Simon Mignolet and Carlos Cuellar were dashed, as the visitors ran riot. The Black Cats have now conceded 13 goals in their last seven with just one clean sheet in that run – against the bottom club QPR. Reading will fancy their chances on Tuesday.

The Swansea Defence
Having looked to be showing an improvement in recent weeks, keeping two clean sheets in the last four, today they were shambolic and had no answer to Norwich’s crosses and aerial threat. Scout Pick, Ben Davies, did at least deliver the assist for Michu’s strike.

Liam Ridgewell
Restored to the side post “toilet-gate”, the left-back lasted just a few minutes at the Emirates before being forced off through injury. We await the prognosis but, with obliging fixtures to come, Ridgewell’s owners will be concerned.

Adam Lallana
Another injury victim, the Saints’ skipper was forced off in the first-half of the clash with Reading with a reported knee problem. With a blank in Gameweek 17, sales of the talented midfielder look likely, regardless of his prognosis.

Sean Morrison
The young centre-back had looked so promising in his run of starts for Reading, notching twice from set-plays. An injury sustained in the defeat to Southampton could now make Morrison a doubt for the midweek trip to Sunderland to frustrate those who took a chance on his potential for the double Gameweek.

Oscar & Eden Hazard
Oscar was always third in the pecking order when it came to Chelsea’s three musketeers but now, under Rafa’s regime, he has perhaps slipped further, despite a sparkling appearance from the bench. Victor Moses was again preferred as a starter at Sunderland, for the third game running. As for Eden Hazard, he seems to have relinquished spot-kick duties and his owners had to watch Juan Mata convert his second goal in consecutive matches to take him to six for the season, leaving Hazard in his wake.

Cesar Azpilicueta
We anticipated that the Spaniard’s stay in Chelsea’s lineup was limited and today we got further evidence to suggest that is the case. Relegated to the bench Gary Cahill and David Luiz starting and Branislav Ivanovic at right-back, it seems that Azpilicueta is destined for a cameo role, particularly considering that John Terry is nearing a return.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Valencia and Cleverley in possible contention for the derby.

I am aware it's Goal.com. But honest to god ,they've been very accurate with team news and etc off late. Last week, they stated that Giroud would be rested. Not as unreliable as they usually are.

To be fair, the DGW was always more about the second fixture. Anything from the first was always going to be a bonus. But I would say that, I have Sess with the armband, alongside Shorey and HRK!

True its not over yet. But is it really a profitable DGW when the first game is a blank? after all they were hardly long term transfers considering the upcoming fixtures for both teams.

You might need Fellaini in your team. Aguero is a waste of time but now the CL is over he might not get rotated as much. I still think he is a rotation risk with the busy xmas schedule coming up. You may want to upgrade Cerny to someone with good fixtures because Begovic has a tough run coming up. Also be prepared to play 433 with your current side due to Mata and Bale both being out

I considered getting rid of aguero. I was praying City got eliminated from Europe in which they did. Then i had a look at City fixtures which looked very good. Worth keeping. Also i cant bring myself to get rid of any other midfielder as they all have very good potential. But if walcott get injured after this time ill have to get rid. I plan to play bego for the rest of the season. Stoke looking sharp away and at home.

        Thoughts?

Yep Aguero is probably worth keeping now that you have him. Do beware of Stokes fixtures, they get tough now so double Stoke defense probably isn't the best idea. You can keep both but rotating them home and away would be a good option due the upcoming fixtures. I hope you also realize that you may only have 2 midfielders this week if Walcott is still injured.

Bale-Mata-Fellaini-Michu-Puncheon is basically the template midfield now.

And to think I sold Mata because the blank GW was approaching!?
Both Mata and Bale coming back after the blank GW, and when Bale recovers fully from injury.

Anyone think Sagna and Jenkinson are going to be rotated over Xmas fixtures ?

I think those two will be rotated. Gibbs is the best bet if you want Arsenal defensive cover at the moment.

I agree with your template mid. Many will be after Mata & Bale once the blank/injury is out of the way. I for one am happy to back Walcott provided he gets fit.

I brought Walcott in after he got 2 assists against Fulham. Its infuriating owning him and constantly seeing orange flags.

And Wenger's contract comments concerned me, so I switched back to Cazorla.

Keep Mata, his value will hold over the blank GW and he's in great form so I don't see Rafa resting him nover the Xmas fixtures, maybe in January.

In Rafa's 4-2-3-1 it seems the middle of the 3 seems to play even higher up to support the striker, Mata looks a season keeper for me and I regret selling him, when I got him at 8.8m!

You're a Spurs fan aren't you? Can you see them rolling out a 442 with Defoe and Ade up front with Dempsey on the wing?

I can see him playing Ade and Defoe together at some stage, maybe even today but I believe his preference is an attacking MF player in behind a striker... with Dempsey playing that role... one of the two but for me Dempsey on the wing doesn't work...

So Walcott to Sess(c) for -4 wasn't the best idea then, particularly as it meant leaving Clyne on the bench and not captaining Michu. I need Sess to go nuts against Reading, and Fletcher not to turn up so I get Clyne. I love DGWs.

Feel free. I shall maintain that a DGW isn't worth it unless they perform in both fixtures, otherwise its like a normal GW + 2pts which isn't really worth it when it essentially wastes two transfers per player.

Serious question here mate, and I realise that you're not the only one that does it - but what actually is the point of leaving non-players in your starting team and the players that will replace them (like RVP) on the bench? Why not just put your best team out and bench the guys that aren't starting?

fair enough. what time is it over there right now?

here the early matches are at ungodly hours, the other matches are still pretty early and a lot of the matches are at the same time that I have matches of my own... and I rarely ever see midweek matches cuz they're all when I have class, which is extremely frustrating as I miss most CL games.

not to mention that most La Liga matches are on some new premium channel now that my tv provider doesn't even offer here...

okay I understand your issue now though. but tbh i'd prefer your situation to mine. i'd much rather stay up late watching games then get up early to watch them... i end up staying up half the night anyways a lot of times. ohh ouch. yeahh i honestly don't have time to watch replays so if i don't see them live I usually don't see them

yeahh it really sucks. so I pretty much only get to see barca play in the classicos and in CL games that I'm actually able to watch.... wish espn or fox soccer would just buy la liga rights over here!

    Bego, Tremmel
    Cuellar, Gallas, Hughes, Demel, Gorkss
    Bale, Fellatio, Michu, Sterling, Sess
    RVP, Suarez, Fletch

    3.5 in the bank

Players needed to be ditched: Gorkss, Sess, Bale (May hold onto Fletch till GW19). Who is first priority? Willing to take a hit this week to fix this mess.

I think you need to look at taking a hit or two. Xmas is coming and the weather is getting cold...

If you don't want to the priority is as follows

Gorkss ( Cuellar has horrible fixtures and I reckon Gallas will be sub)
Sess - he is a punt that has gone wrong get rid now...
Fletcher - wasting a forward slot
Bale - it all depends when you think he will be back.. If its one more GW then you may as well keep now.... saying that I don't think he will play until 29/12 so I would get rid

i'd ship sess this week and probably gorkss too unless you have 3 defenders you're happy with for this gw

might as well hold on to bale and hope he recovers quickly as mata has a blank, walcott might be injured, and i don't think caz is that great of an option so not sure who you'd replace bale with anyways

keep fletch for this week but maybe ship next week for lambert/ba/defoe

With the January transfer window coming up do you think some teams will wise up when it comes to getting the right type of player in their teams. So often you see teams bring in a player who has a completely contrary style to what would suit that team. How often have we seen players go to a new club and not do as well because they can't fit into that teams style of play. There are countless examples of this.

Teams such as Manchester United, Arsenal, Swansea and Stoke often do a good job in making intelligent signings, sure they don't all work out but at least there is an effort to sign players that seem to suit the playing style of the club.

You already have Defoe and Ade. You'd need to play two up front on a regular basis if you're to keep them all happy. Not sure that would suit Spurs.

I'm sure clubs do consider the playing style of the player, there's too much money involved for them to be so cavalier. Good players will also be expected to have the ability to adapt to different playing styles. Sometimes the players do adapt, sometimes they don't, but there's always risk involved, for every Van P and Michu, there's a Veron and Torres.

Unfortunately this is not always the case. Liverpool for instance are historically renown for being a pass and move team. Yet they bought Caroll, Downing & Adam.

Historically, yes, they are a pass and move team. But that's history. Under Daglish, who bought those three, they were absolutely not a pass and move team. They were direct, long ballers. So the acquisition of those players had logic (despite obviously paying way over the odds). Downing to put crosses in, and big Andy to get on the end of them. Didn't work, but it was a thought out plan none the less.

Yes I suppose. I guess you could argue that Daglish was a bad signing if he decided to dramatically change the style of the team. It may have ruined them long term.

I think sometimes they are signings to keep the fans happy, its not always the managers choice of player either ie Chelsea, and also I think young managers being handed 20 to 30 million to splash out could go to their heads a little bit, and they just sign a big name player because they'd be questioned if they bought an unheard of 19 year old senegalese where as fergie and wenger wouldn't really be questioned who ever they sign.

Interesting, so you're saying that managers who are relatively new to the job are prone to rash signings in order to announce themselves quickly. This may be the case for some perhaps. Brendon Rodgers by contrast didn't do this when he went to Liverpool, he made a concerted effort to buy passing players even if they aren't the big names.

Some good points, but i disagree about signings to keep the fans happy. With the amounts of money being spent, i don't think the clubs stop for one second to consider what the fans think. In many other aspects too, the fans are the last people who are given any real say in how their clubs are run. Generally speaking, they are taken advantage of, especially regarding now exorbitant ticket prices, merchandise and the rest.

Another great start to a GW has seen me drop to 580k. Wondering how much more i can take with this game.. drives me absolutely insane. I make all the right choices on paper, but never get the results.

Currently 86+123 pts back of my ML.

Is there still time to play catch-up or time to throw in the towel??

The frustrating part is that I finished 6k last season but am yet to get anywhere near the top 100k yet..

Abit late to worry your defence now. Need to sort the attacking 8. Sterling isn't worth his spot imo, Bale, Sess & Fletcher may both have to go also. Stoke, Swan, Norwich & S'ton have both well of late. Make sure you get 1 CS every week from your defence & you will see a nice difference.
