Roberto Mancini made the surprise decision of fielding his new hit man Edin Dzeko from the start at Eastlands against Mick McCarthy‘s Wolves on Saturday, despite the Bosnian not having participated in a competitive game since mid-December.

The Man City boss also lined City up in his favoured 4-2-3-1 formation and Fantasy Managers far and wide must have feared the worse when Carlos Tevez was moved from the lone front man role that has served him so well to out left, in order to accommodate Dzeko.

As the game developed, however, it became clear that Dzeko’s strength and stature not only gives City a more physical focal point up front, it also affords Tevez a freedom he has barely found all season. The result? Tevez, having scored one goal in his last six games at Eastlands, netted a double and was awarded the three Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Bonus Points.

A look at City’s last two home games shows a marked difference in how Tevez and Dzeko interpret the lone forward role within the City system and suggests that despite the initial reservations of Fantasy Managers, Tevez could be even more of a danger in the second half of the season, with Dzeko already showing a willingness and intelligence that the likes of Jo, Emmanuel Adebayor and Roque Santa Cruz failed to demonstrate.

Tevez v Blackpool

As the heat map against Blackpool shows, Tevez was fairly static in his movement, playing 73% of all passes in the final third of the pitch. He made 26 passes that day but barely a single one was played in his own half as he stayed high up the pitch, which makes him easier to contain for opposition defences. Mancini’s side have been somewhat predictable at Eastlands this season; eight times they have scored just one goal or failed to find the net at all at home. Intriguingly, the only other time they have scored four at home was in game week 20, where an injury to Tevez allowed Mario Balotelli to play the lone striker role and subsequently bag a hat-trick.

The Average Position map also backs this up; Tevez (32) is isolated up top, with Yaya Toure (42) and David Silva (21) a substantial distance behind him. City’s shape doesn’t seem particularly cohesive in this instance, with less fluidity and threat to their play the closer they get to the opposition goal.

Dzeko v Wolves

The Bosnian showed a real understanding of the target man role that showed just why he was so sought-after throughout Europe, with a performance that already suggests he’ll be a fundamental factor in City’s bid for goals and glory as the season unfolds.

This heat map from the Wolves game sums up just how differently Dzeko works the lone front man role. He made 32 passes, with 31% in his own half, as his mobility proved difficult for the Wolves defence to keep him under control. He dropped back to link with the Man City midfield time and again -which culminated in his assist for Yaya Toure‘s goal- thus freeing up the space for Tevez to take advantage of.

Dzeko made just 49% of his passes in the final third, a substantial difference when compared to Tevez above. With a physique seemingly tailor-made for the Premier League, Dzeko already looks like being of great benefit to the team overall.

A look at this Average Position map above shows how, despite the player’s respective positions in the City starting XI, Tevez was positioned just as central and as far forward as Dzeko (10) against Wolves. This, in turn, allowed Yaya Toure to be nearer the forward line, and it showed in a performance that saw the Ivorian grab a goal and 2 FPL Bonus Points for his performance.

Post-match, Dzeko warned there’s plenty more to come as he comes to terms with the English top division:

“The game is different. It is harder than Germany. It is probably going to take me a few games to find my feet, but I am very happy to be here and if we keep winning there will be no problem.

Tevez v Wolves

Tevez showed on Saturday just how much the freer role suits his style; as this Heat Map shows, he floated all over the pitch without restriction; dropping deep and roaming forward, moving central and appearing on the right, thus making a mockery of his left wing starting berth. Tevez also saw far more of the ball, making 44 passes, a huge jump in comparison to his Blackpool performance.

Indeed, Tevez saw more touches of the ball, made more passes and had more successful dribbles than any other forward last weekend. Add his two goals to the mix and the knock-on impact of Dzeko already bodes well for all the Argentine’s Fantasy Owners as the season, and the title race, starts to heat up.

Mancini was also thoroughly impressed by the debutant, saying after the match:

“He played very well for his first game, especially as he has only been with us a week and only recently returned from a winter break. He will get better as he gets used to his new team-mates and I think he will do well alongside Carlos and Mario Balotelli.”

The strength in depth of City’s squad will no doubt see changes in playing personnel over the next few games, but judging by their play going forward on Saturday, Mancini’s formation certainly seems to be one issue that requires little need to change, in light of Dzeko’s acquisition.

I don't normally wish injuries on players but I do hope RVP gets a little niggle that puts him out for a couple of weeks, nothing serious - just a bad dose of the squits or something.
That would learn all you swineholes for driving up his price before I was ready to sign him. That'll LEARN YOU ALL!

Well my ORIGINAL plan was to simply sell Tevez for Rooney nice and simple, but that little pubehead Rafael aided and abetted by the second worst referring decision of the day has put a cat amongst the pigeons. As did Tevez going mental and the fact I'd lose 0.4 on him.
So now I'm thinking Kolarov OUT cheapie doubledefender IN
            and Carroll OUT Berbatov IN.
Breaks my heart to transfer the beast Carroll for that nance though [no offence].

Non taken. I think i'm actually tempted to hold fire on Carroll and potentially have the best differential in the game (best case scenario), useless whorebag drunkard on my bench (worst case scenario).

T'would only be until the wildcard gets played in a couple of weeks (when he should be back). That would give me (DGW's in caps)
                AL-HABSI
                CRAINEY, CHEAPIE, SKRTEL
                ADAM, NANI, Nasri, VdV
                Tevez, TORRES, BERBATOV
                Subs: Jaask, Bale, Rafael, Knight

Which is reasonable. For cheapie I'm leaning towards Walker from Villa but not sure yet. Is Berbatov likely to start both in your opinion?

Good stuff, Carroll is £6.2, I'd only lose 0.2 if I sell him now so no great hardship, I'll get him back on the wildcard.

Having berba in your fantasy team is actually more frustrating than supporting him. Combine them both and you're bald in frustration by the end of the 90mins. Rooney for me if i take the plunge on a Utd striker.

Oh totally, I was lucky first time round that I got him just before he got his Liverpool hattrick, and then watched him do f*ck all until I gladly binned him. The tosser then scored 5 against Blackburn.
I don't like him one bit, and if I could afford Rooney I'd get him instead.

Oh I'd keep Carroll in that case, I really would. It's just that I have the cash to do the move, plus it saves £££££ in losses on Carroll before I play the wildcard and hopefully if Berbatov does well in the DGW it might even make a few £££££.
Carroll is straight back in after the wildcard.

Yeah I agree with you they are a solid outfit at the moment, I know a new deal has just been put on the table for Barton so I really hope he signs. I'd be suprised if he didn't to be honest.

I actually cant remember who won it but i think it may have (controversially) went to RBJ! Me and my mates have nicknamed barton 'pirlo' because his passing is so inventive. I was gutted that outside of the boot through the middle to ameobi at sunderland didnt get the finish it deserved. Im certain barton will sign. Oh have you heard stories that nolan led a meeting when toon got relegated with the aim of basically saying to anyone who wasnt fighting for the team to sod-off?

No didn't hear that, but fair play to the man. I really like him as a pro and hope he's with us for the duration. Really happy that Ben Arfa is nearing a return too, that lad looked brilliant until De Mong broke him and I was delighted when he signed a permanent deal.

Im not sure its true but im happy to accept that it is as it adds to my man love of nolan haha! Yeah a midfield of barton, tiote, ben arfa and nolan is very attractive i cant wait to see it in full swing. What would you think about toon entering/re-entering the chase for robbie keane if they did? His recent wage dispute with birmingham does indicate he wouldnt fit in with newcastles team ethic but he may just be a bargain at 6m.

Yeah im just concerned about the back-up for carroll, do you think ranger can step up if he needs to? Although having said thst he appears to be behind ameobi and best in the pecking order at present. Whats youre thought on jonas? Hes so frustrating. Impossible to tackle but finds it equally as impossible to complete a pass/cross!

I like Gutierrez as an outlet, yeah his final delivery isn't great but he's a damn sight better than Lennon at Spurs and he works really well with Enrique. I can understand frustration with him though.
I think the squad overall lacks quality in depth, particularly up front. But I think Robbie Keanes best days are long behind him and wouldnt be overly keen on him on a permanent deal.
Ranger looks like he has good potential (apart from that miss v West Ham) and could lead the line in the future. Ameobi and Best, well meh they'll do for now.
Talks that we might sign Jay Bothroyd, but I think he'll stay at Cardiff until the end of the season.

Watch him for a couple of games, he is unbelievably good this season. Honestly, humour me and watch him. Oh did you see the yellow for accidental handball by the way? I used to quite like Howard Webb before that, and even sort of argued his case in the World Cup Final. But that was the most ridiculous booking in history.

What do we reckon on this team for next GW?

    Jussi
    Samba EVRA HANGELAND
    Nasri NANI ADAM XXXXXX
    ROONEY TORRES Carroll
    Subs: Foster, Kolarov, Bardsley, Brunt/VDV

Would require a 4 point hit and involves dumping Rafael & Tevez for Evra & Rooney and then dumping either Brunt (for a £5.1m midfielder, probably Davies or Albrighton) or VDV (for a £8.0m midfielder, probably Dempsey or N'Zogbia). Thoughts? Not sure it's worth it, could just do the first two (although i'd have to get Rio as i don't think i could afford Evra)

I'm going to WC before the birm triple i think, then spend all the points transferring the sh*tters out the following week 😉

I'm humming and harring about losing Tevez for Rooney when actually, going on recent team form, Torres should be stepping aside for spud features.

I wouldn't dump VDV. I'm also not sure how much it would cost you to get back Tevez, but I can't really sell him because I would lose .5 if I wanted to get him back.

Rio is as good as Evra right now. Evra isn't racking up attacking points.

      My 2 cents.

          what an utterly bollox statement.

Defenders never RACK up attacking points, they slowly accumulate them. and you get defenders, mostly, for their attacking POTENTIAL, future potential that is.

4 point hit, yay or nay?

Kolarov -> Ferdinand (don't have enough for Vidic)
Carroll -> DJ Campbell (frees up my money for Ferdinand)

I was considering Torres -> Rooney/RVP but I think I'll just wait it out until after the DGW. It may cost me, but I'm not sure another 4 point hit is worth it.

FYI, those 2 transfers give me 7 DGW players. I'll be wildcarding in GW 27.

Hey, SD, now you're here - thinking forward to WC and budget mids, what's Morrison like as an alternative to Brunt? He's looked quite good when I've seen him but not seen him enough, is he a bit-part player?

Nah he's a regular, probably our most attacking midfielders, he's playing just off Wingie up front. Very frustrating player he could shoot he'd be very good but he still will get you the occasional goal.

Dorrans is on most set pieces now so I don't think Brunt is as attractive anymore. Dorrans is on penalties, corners and is probably as good or if not better than Brunt at free kicks.

Helps like you that we have a striker capable of scoring 10-15+ goals a season. Wolves & West Ham especially don't. I'm reasonably confident, I think our squad is the best it ever has been in this division and now we have Myhill in goal and Olsson, our best defender back I think we'll be ok.

We'll still have another bad patch I'm sure and it will still be up in the air near the end of the season but I'm pretty certain we are better than 3 other teams in this league.

"5-1 and a lucky draw for them, we all know who is the better team".

Okay just done my first ever Wildcard 🙂
    For this GW:

    Al-Habsi (Foster)

    Evra Kelly Walker

    N'Zogbia Adam VDV Nani

    RVP Dzeko Tevez

    Bench: Coleman, Bale, Djourou

Coleman is home to West Ham, and I know how poor we can be but foolish to sub anyone for him?
I just have a feeling my bench will do too well :\

and villas second game is away, and guess how many cleansheets they have kept away from home. (hint: 0)

theres no way ill be siging rvp before the leeds game, price rise or no price rise. Hell probably play some part in that game, and we all know legs are built like russian cars.

To take the risk so as to save less than ONE THOUSANDTH of your budget, is mentally, physically, and sensibly...full retard.

was going to CT, alternate possibility though- holding 2 transfers for gw 26 as deadline will mean we can see the teams, 2 punts just for that night, then gw 27 wild card. seems to just make sense, not 100% yet though

Yeah GW27 for me aswell i think. I would only want Utd players and Adam for this DGW. Can't see any investment anywhere else. Rafael has screwed me over though so its put the wildcard into my thoughts.

The premise is you WC before GW27, bringing in the players that you want for GW27 in.

Roll over a couple of transfers to kick out the players you no longer want for GW28.

I'm probably going for 27 myself - to pick the strongest possible team for the rest of the season, it also means that in all likelihood my minileague rivals will show their hand first so I can see who the differentials will be.

                It's certainly worth considering.

Downsides of course are possible injuries/suspensions. Although for every week you WC before GW27 you have a transfer to make adjustments.

Churchill, read it right I think but surely using your Wc in GW27 will mean any rolled over transfers prior to 27, will be lost, so any more than 1 transfer in GW28 would be incur a hit?

Could anyone suggest the safest option for a Liverpool defender for GW 24 (wol, FUL) and GW 25 (STK). Finger hovering over the WC button - was going to take Johnson but everyone here has Kelly (cost not an issue as will be replacing after GW 25 aqnd have 0.7 mill even if I take Johnson).
