So Aston Villa have confirmed the signing of Darren Bent from Sunderland for a club record fee, believed to be in the region of a staggering £24 million. The striker is set to be formally unveiled at a press conference this evening.

As we stated yesterday when the news of Villa’s bid and Bent’s transfer request broke, the move seems an odd one and not necessarily an event that will immediately boost the Fantasy potential of a striker who has dipped considerably in returns following last season’s 24 league goal haul.

Bent has so far recorded just 8 league strikes, despite Sunderland showing decent form and “overachieving” – the Black Cats currently sit in 6th place. Villa, in contrast, are languishing just above the relegation places having suffered a stuttering season with Gerard Houllier’s arrival failing to spark a revival in fortunes.

Goals have been a major problem – Villa have notched just 24 in 22 league games. This aggressive move in the transfer market should provide a solution. Bent has proven himself on the Premier League stage in previous seasons and, if Villa can maximise the service to him, he will surely start repaying the substantial fee sooner rather than later.

While Bent’s Fantasy Premier League price of 8.6 is unlikely to tempt immediate investment at a time when the likes of Carlos Tevez, Robin Van Persie and even Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov, are attracting the bulk of the investment up front, Villa’s new acquisition must be watched and a glimmer of form could spark interest. Villa’s run of opponents between Gameweek 30 and 36 looks a particularly promising period for Bent and his new team-mates.

Villa are one of the teams facing a double fixture in Gameweek 24 with a home clash with City, followed by a trip to Wigan next week. Those fixtures appear to offer Bent an immediate platform to register his first goal in the claret and blue.

Fantasy Managers must also consider the knock-on effects of this deal; if Houllier can retain both Ashley Young and Stewart Downing, then their potential to earn assists will surely be boosted by the arrival of a proven finisher. The same could be said of Marc Albrighton if he can regain a starting role.

We must also wait to assess the impact on the January transfer window. Only today there have been articles suggesting that should the Bent deal be completed, it would ripple throughout the Premier League and prove the catalyst for a number of moves that will likely influence our Fantasy selections over the coming weeks. John Carew’s switch to West Brom could well be the first development of many to emerge in the next week or so.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Who's going to gamble on Bent giving Villa a lift for their DGW?
Could swap him for Drogs, giving me the cash to get Vidic in for Rafael.

I watched the whole Chelsea game on Saturday, Drogba is a spent force, last season he would have scored a hattrick with the opportunities he had.

          My current thinking is

          Rafael, Malouda & Drogba out

          for either..

          Vidic, Fabregas & Bent

          or

          Vidic, Nasri & Rooney

          4 points spent.

What's peoples opinion of Carroll at the moment?

I have him on my bench, thinking of putting him into the team but I obviously want him to play 60+ mins, or not at all. Is a 5 minute cameo more likely?

I don't know what Pardew is like with regards to that sort of thing..

The problem is that its a muscle tear, which is can be a tricky fix, especially as its on his right thigh - so basically any time he shoots or anything it could go again if not fully healed. Hard to predict when he's back though Pardew says he will HOPEFULLY be ready for Spurs.
      Personally, I might sell him.

Trouble is, I bought him before the season started, so I can't actually afford to sell him and them buy him back.
And he's a player I definitely want, the way he was scoring.

If I knew for a fact that Kyrgiakos wouldn’t play this week, then I’d take a hit to trade him for a DGW defender like Hangerland. But what if he comes on again, and maybe even flukes a header from a corner. But I know I’m gonna be staring at a big fat zero as my final score from him.

Grief you have a lot of DGW players even without Raf and Konch.

Now I have only a couple due to same problem maybe I should consider the WC was thinking about leaving it till GW26 too.

As for you I wouldn't bother you have all the key players anyway. Except maybe Dempsey or a Man U defender.

It's not benching as such, it's part of a multiple transfer.

I would be bringing in Nasri for Malouda, starting Nasri and benching Varney.

        it's a 3 transfer 4 point hit.

I am not too keen on the grapes from Espana myself.
French Merlot is the best for me 🙂

Merlot from North East Italy is usually better, if you are talking about single varietals ...

I'm well covered for the DGW but my bench just looks too good....am I mad with this team selection?

    Reina
    Evra, Kelly, Hangeland, Djourou
    Nasri, Nani, Adam
    DJ, Torres, Rooney

    Subs: Foster, Coleman, VDV, Yaya

I honestly think VDV will be rested though.

Benching Coleman against West Ham at home......I wouldn't.Looks like you've made the rookie mistake of having a ridiculously strong squad.

Ha cheers, yeah that is madness. Djorou is taking his spot on the bench!

There was nice Torres/ Rooney debate earlier if somebody has missed it.

I've hold my thoughts and will be going Torres tonight, I see potential for a price drop for Drogba. Anybody to change my mind before I pull the thriger?

Well, I was going for him, nut Back on the horse pointed out that I would be worrying all week - and he was right. DGW Bent for me ...

Birmingham are getting worse by the week. Will be missing one of their key central defenders . Rooney's on pens. United > Liverpool. Then again, Torres is guaranteed to play 180 minutes and Shrek ain't.
      It's a tough one alright.

Thanks Dog it looks like you are suggesting Torres. He was lively and I don't like Rooney's role now with Berbs so attacking.

I'm kinda siding with Rooney actually - purely on the basis that United could create more chances against Brum than LPool might in 2 games. It's decided, I'm captaining Roo but both are good choices.
