Our Friday night regular returns with a trio of overlooked alternatives for your consideration ahead of tomorrow morning’s deadline. We’ve turned to a pair of London-based protagonists with strong upcoming schedules on the horizon and scoured the bargain basement for a cut-price defensive option at the DW…

Shaun Wright-Phillips

No more than a mere bench-warmer in Mark Hughes’ last few matches in charge at QPR, the winger has made his way into the starting lineup under Harry Redknapp. With Jamie Mackie moved to the lone frontman role in favour of the ineffectual Djibril Cisse, Wright-Phillips has been handed a berth on the right of the R’s midfield as the new man in charge looks to engineer a climb out the drop zone.

While the likes of Esteban Granero and Junior Hoilett have been peripheral in Redknapp’s thoughts, Wright-Phillips seems to have his manager’s faith and justified his inclusion by producing an assist in last week’s 2-2 draw at Wigan. It sums up QPR’s season under Hughes that this was the winger’s first attacking returns of the campaign but with three home games in the next four (FUL, new, WBA, LIV) he’s afforded a chance to build on last weekend’s output.

Priced at 4.9 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 5.1 in the Sky Sports game, it’s no surprise that Wright-Phillips has an ownership of around the 1% mark in both games but, if Redknapp is to work his magic, he could be an integral figure in his side’s battle against relegation.

Jan Vertonghen

The Belgian’s start to life at the Lane has been a distinctly underwhelming one. Vertonghen arrived in the Premier League with a goal-getting pedigree – 14 strikes in his last two seasons at Ajax is indicative of his attacking sensibilities but so far, he’s found the net just once, with a single assist also accrued.

Two clean sheets in 16 games sums up Tottenham’s lack of resilience at the back but with Benoit Assou-Ekotto soon to return from a knee injury, Andre Villas-Boas’ side could be set for an upturn in defensive returns. With a superb run of fixtures to follow (SWA, STOK, avl, sun, REA, qpr) Vertonghen looks a decent differential shout not just for this weekend but all the way up to the winter wildcard in Gameweek 22.

Priced at 6.3 in FPL and 7.2 in the Sky Sports game, he’s far from cheap but as his Eredivisie stats suggest, Vertonghen has the class to prosper as Villas-Boas looks to take advantage of the festive schedule and boost his side’s chances of a top three finish.

Ronnie Stam

A raft of injuries and suspensions at the back for Wigan has afforded the Dutchman a run of starts in recent weeks. With the treatment room at the DW still seemingly packed to the rafters, Stam looks set to continue on the right of Roberto Martinez’s midfield four, with Emmerson Boyce dropping into the back-three to cover for the likes of Gary Caldwell and Ivan Ramis.

Over his four consecutive starts, Stam hasn’t exactly propelled himself onto Fantasy radars. No goals, assists or clean sheets hardly offer too much hope but his out of position berth and rock-bottom FPL price of 3.8 may appeal to those Fantasy managers looking for a cheap defender who would free up budget further up the pitch. Priced at 4.0 in the Sky Sports game and with an ownership of under 3% in FPL, there are few, if indeed any, players who come cheaper with the guarantee of a start this weekend as the Latics look to put the brakes on Norwich’s recent unbeaten run.

    I'm going to keep trying:

    Mignolet
Nelsen / Jose Enrique / Baines
    Snodgrass / Fellaini / Silva / Michu
Suarez (c) / Berbatov (vc) / Van Persie

    Ruddy / Clyne / Puncheon / Shorey

Migs is a liability, so thinking Ruddy to Chesney

I can just afford Berb to Roon, but only tonight.

    Whaddaya think?

That is definitely the prudent move. I think I'm beguiled by the vision of an RVP-Rooney-Suarez front. Chesney will pay off long-term i think . . .

I'd rather have bale/mata/cazorla/walcott/nolan (in that order) over Snodgrass than Rooney over Berbs. I tend to play a bit cautious though. The keeper move looks good

I'll say some sooth: Arsenal have every chance of being toothless on any given weekend, and neither Hughes nor Shorey are likely to get cleanies, so offensive points are where it's at.

fair enough...I'd just be looking at it as damage limitation. And QPR are less likely to do damage. Arsenal scored 7 against Reading earlier on this season after all. Even we put 3 past them mid week! And we're meant to be awful at attacking 🙂

That's the point. I benched Shorey v Man Utd fearing a hammering. They conceded 4 but he still got 2 bloody assists. Enrique will miss out and will make this question useless anyway. *groan*

I’m selling Lambert for Defoe (to try and ensure i have 11 playing) – but who do i drop?

    Foster (WHU)
Shorey (ARS) | Gibbs (rdg) | Cameron (EVE) | Enrique (AVL)
Afro (stk) | Sterling (AVL) | Michu (tot) | Santi (rdg)
    Suarez (AVL) | RVP (SUN)

Shorey looks obvious but maybe for the wrong reasons.

    Rangel - Shorey - Evans* - Cuellar - Gunter*

I'm thinking of doing Fletcher > Defoe with my FT.

A fit Yacob will push Morrison upfield and Gera to the bench.

Quite right. But there's something else going on. Gun laws are too easy an answer. Yes they need tightening, but wtf is really going on here? Why schools, why kids, why does it keep happening? I am absolutely on board for tight gun laws, just not satisfied that that alone explains it. I don't know the anwser though . . .

I think these incidents are happening far too often. It's some sort of sick fetish of psychotic minds...the people who are committing these atrocious crimes are obviously deranged and plot these things to compensate for their own misery and wish destruction not only on themselves but on others. It's one final act of carnage, sometimes with an agenda or sometimes for no reason at all. Almost as if it is an act of vengeance against a cruel world. I'm rambling here but if you allow emotionally unstable/psychotic people easy access to weapons we are going to continue to see these sort of incidents reoccur. It's very sad indeed.

Perhaps the answer lies in trying to make the world a bit less cruel ...

But the sadness is overwhelming. It's paralyzing. Young, innocent lives snuffed out in an act of impetuous self-obsessed rage.

The salve lies in kissing my children and embracing my drink. I shall do both.

At this moment, I hope for a thing called Hell.

Let us rather think about how to remove the Second Amendment.

The Second Amendment (Amendment II) to the United States Constitution is the part of the United States Bill of Rights that protects the right of the people to keep and bear arms. It was adopted on December 15, 1791, along with the rest of the Bill of Rights.

        My heart bleeds right now.

A father of a 1st and 3rd grader, hearing of the deaths of so many young children ... the mind boggles.

But I would caution against removing the 2nd amendment, still. We are a nation of 320 million. The acts of a few shouldn't destroy the freedoms of the many. More regulation? I would say yes. Total elimination? Hell no.

King Eric - This is probably meant for another forum but It intrigues me to know why you class owning a gun as a freedom. To me walking down my high street without the need for a gun is freedom. Not criticising you I just dont get it.

No, I understand. It's a matter of perspective. The American view, if you're not American, is that freedoms are restrictions on the power of government ... they empower the individual, the people, vs, the authority of government.

We choose, rightly or wrongly, to live in a society that doesn't depend on the government for protection - and one that limits government's power over the individual. Freedoms are a double-edged sword: the power to write Shakespearean plays comes with the power of obscenity. The freedom to protect oneself comes with the chance of inflicting pain upon others.

The American philosophy quite simply chooses the individual over the collective.

Doesn't make me feel good right now, though. 🙁

It is all about the interpretation. On it's face, especially when viewed in light of how similar amendments have been read restrictively, it does not mean that people may acquire arms without regulation. Nothing about regulating access to handguns or assault rifles is in any way inconsistent wiith a sensible reading of the Second Amendment. Unless stopping people from shouting "fire" in a crowded theatre is inconsistent with the First . . .

Doosra, you seem like a sensible chap so I'd like to say this - The main reasons for this amendment are:
        1. So the people who constitute a country retain the ability - if nessecary - to resist or overthrow a runaway authoritarian/fascist/corrupt (etc) government. I.e. to ensure that the government and its actors do not have the (complete) monopoly on force. This is vital as all govts. have a natural tendancy to slide this towards these ends.

        2. If all societal structures break down - for whatever reason - you need some form of force to defend your property/family/community from threats, & to hunt for food to survive.

I know that higher gun ownership will generally mean higher levels of deaths and injury from guns, and this is devestating for all affected. And clearly, people going through periods of instability may have easier access to them than if they were banned, but, the role they play (points 1. & 2.) is of greater importance in the long term, I believe.

Furthermore, we should look at the underlying causes of illegal gun use. I posit an enlightened, moral person, with a decent standard of living who avoids (or is not showered with) casual & graphic violence, and who has reasons to live, will less likely go on a killing spree than say, a poorly educated, amoral person, with a poor standard of life who has become accustomed with casual & graphic violence, and who has few reasons to live. So, we should address the structural unfairness, corruption & theft implicit in our financial/economic & political system which (through a variety of mechanisms) breeds much of the latter type of person, and in the process of this, we will create more of the former type of person. As you do this you should theoretically create a wiser & more peaceful environment in which atrocities like this are extreme rarity, and guns are only kept in as a last defense in accordance with 1.& 2.
