Arsenal and Newcastle serve up a post-Christmas cracker in a 10-goal thriller at the Emirates. Theo Walcott has a hand in five of the Gunners’ seven strikes, while Olivier Giroud and Demba Ba both bag doubles. Here’s the follow-up to our early-evening Stock Check:

On the Up

Theo Walcott
In his third straight start as the lone forward for Arsenal, Walcott ran riot this evening with three goals and a couple of assists in a quite sensational display against Newcastle. With a trip to former club Southampton up next and double Gameweek 23 on the horizon, Walcott’s bandwagon is set to roar into action over the next couple of days; with the likes of Gareth Bale and Kevin Nolan now suspended for Gameweek 21 and doubts remaining over Michu’s availability, his transfer in will be a priority for those looking to freshen up their five man midfields.

Olivier Giroud
The Frenchman produced a two-goal salvo after climbing off the bench to suggest Arsene Wenger has options through the middle, though. While Walcott’s starting role is not in question, his performance on the right after Giroud’s introduction was equally eye-catching – certainly, Wenger has plenty of in-form options ahead of the St Mary’s trip.

Demba Ba
Once again, the Newcastle forward was amongst the Fantasy points this evening. The recent schedule had looked against Alan Pardew’s side but Ba’s double at the Emirates means has produced a goal or assist against United, City and Arsenal in the last four. Now up to second in the forward rankings behind Robin Van Persie, Ba continues to look fixture proof, despite his side’s top-flight struggles this term.

Lukas Podolski
A goal and assist from the German proved crucial as the Gunners fought off a valiant effort from their visitors. Podolski is hitting form just at the right time ahead of Arsenal’s double Gameweek 23 – he had notched a goal and pair of assists at Reading in Gameweek 17 and is another firmly on the radar, with an 8.2 price tag furthering his appeal.

Sylvain Marveaux
A peripheral figure in the Magpies’ starting line-up this term, the Frenchman’s display suggests he may be deserving of more game time under Alan Pardew. While Marveaux’s goal will have caught the eye of Fantasy managers, a stunning pass for Ba’s second hints at a player high on confidence right now. If he can maintain his starting berth, a 4.2 price tag is intriguing.

Going Down

Newcastle Defence
Alan Pardew’s backline have now conceded 11 goals in their last two matches, with injuries and suspensions again decimating their chances. The Magpies will now have Mike Williamson back for their home clash with Everton on Wednesday but with a handful of their first-team regulars still unavailable, they are in danger of being drawn into a real relegation scrap this term.

Arsenal Defence
Wenger’s side went into tonight’s game with two clean sheets in their previous three but Newcastle’s trio of goals will lessen the Arsenal backline’s appeal ahead of the double Gameweek. Although Kieran Gibbs impressed going forward with a third assist in his last three, Arsenal’s display at the back suggests he may have to maintain his current form if he’s to pick up the points.

It was that or i would of had play Cameron vs City and having to field 10 players as McCartney is out long term. Plus i fancy a cheeky reading cleanie against tot :), if michu does not play (I dont think he will).

Because rafael and gibbs are better options (attacking/cleanie). Mainly it was for backup in case michu is out and Mata/Torres rested and i honestly think Michu wont play and one of Mata/torres will be rested if not both.

Would of potentially only fielded 9 players. Savvy?

                  In summary

                  Bale Michu out.
Risk of Mata/Torres big rotataion risk
Cameron vs city not a good bet

Reading vs no Bale tottenham could be promising.

I think they've actually downed the influence of pace on Fifa 13 (like 60 pace defenders are able to catch up to 90 pace lennons), it was definitely much worse on fifa 12.

so far as I know first choice left-back is McCartney and right-back is Demel or O'Brien (who can also play midfield) so Tomkins has been mostly benched...thing is McCartney and Demel have been injured so often that O'Brien plays every game

it's a gamble whoever you go for

when McC is injured RB Demel and LB O'Brien play

if McC is fit RB is unclear

            Tomkins is #4 full-back and #3 center-back

You should look for arsenal cover for the DGW. I would suggest getting Santi and Gibbs if you want to do what the kids are doing. If not Podolski and Giroud might surprise many people

I think i want an Arsenal defender for the DGW, and i'd get him now for the Saints game too.

Gibbs would be the ideal choice but can i trust his fitness for both games? Sagna is cheaper but has nothing like the attacking potential that Gibbs does. Arsenal are inconsistent in terms of cleansheets, so im thinking it would be be best to buy one with the best chance of attacking returns. I guess i could go for Mertesacker who's a threat from corners?

Gibbs is just so good going forward. Hmm....

Saints will score, then you're left with Citeh before the DGW. I was reluctant to get an Arsenal defender last night because i think you're relying too much on attacking threat. Turns out i should have probably got Gibbs anyway. My alternative didn't exactly work out 🙁

I'll probably get Gibbs for GW23

That's true. I think they have so much attacking potential right now, but maybe it's best to pick on better fixtures and reassess before the double.

I might just get a West Ham defender in 1st then, as Nerdlinger suggests. Worst thing would be to get Gibbs now and then see him get injured.

Yeah I don't rate him either. It's a strange one with him because his defending seems lacklustre alot of the time yet that is normally the case with a real attacking full back who specialises in getting forward but he isn't really up to much in that area either.

I still rate him amongst the best RB's in the league on his day, but this season he's been crap to put it simply. His many crosses aren't reaching a target and he's square-footed in his approach to defence.

West Ham defender not better value and just as likely to do well for the double gw and before? Gibbs for sure is a decent shout tho - if he's fit he's not likely to be replaced by Santos! Where as Sagna has Jenkinson to step in.

I went for Rafael > Gibbs this week based on his attacking potential over Sagna. I think he has been unlucky with injuries so hopefully he can avoid them and get a good run in the team. He looks much more of a threat going forward than Bacary.

So... is that the Cazorla v Walcott battle settled? I'm interested to hear people's answers. A few weeks ago it was Cazorla hitting the hattie; now that Walcott's done it this week, does that make him undoubtedly the better choice?

Cazorla's been off the pace recently, but luckily the likes of the OX, Wilshere and even Podolski have stepped up their game to compensate. Theo's the pick all day for me, based on today's performance he's an essential whilst playing OoP and surprisingly clinical in front of goal for his standards.

Today's score makes it look done and dusted - but Santi will pretty much play every minute of every remaining Arsenal fixture (barring injury) - can anyone with any confidence say the same of Theo?

As much as I am tempted by Mata and Fella I will hold I think.
He does like an away game!

If you got Michu in at a good price it's crazy to sell then have to buy him back at a much higher price.

he will drop more if he miss next game.
Fact is I've never had Michu so I dont mind his price.

but then if Mata looks crazy good again tomorrow, scores a goal or two and then comes off after 80 minutes for a little break i'll probably be saying 1

I want Mata but I might as well start loading for the DGW which is why I'm leaning toward 2. Got Michu at 7.5 so would lose 400k if I sold him now.

Help... late transfer before the window...should I transfer in:
    a) De Guzman (vs avl) and Defoe (vs rdg)
    or
    b) Lennon (vs rdg) and Ba (vs eve)

    Thanks 🙂

Either way seems a winner. Something about Ba though that I like.
Prob Defoe's missed chance off a beautiful Bale cross!!

Gibbs. Dont go nasty as he played very poorly and could get rotated.

how about Cesar? he has QPRD, could be another 8-0 VILLA.
I probably get Walcott, Santi, Podolski for DGW so I dont really need Gibbs in GW23

Gibbs has 5 assists this season, but only in matches Arsenal has won 6-1, 5-2 and 7-3. Any rival of some level is causing much irritation for Arsenal offense, I don't see it changing much. I think Azpilicueta MAY be the better choice now, but we'll see. Let's remember - Chelsea is one of the league's best defensives, and among them Azpilicueta is the main offensive creator right now. And he's cheap. I think his number of possessors is soon gonna be going up.

Mertesacker is probably a bad choice, as he's gonna get the same defensive points as Gibbs with less chance of offensive chances.

Nastasić, I think he's gonna still be playing. He's clearly superior to Toure or Lescott. I think he's safe, but not much in case of offense, very little shots, key passes. With the way teams lose goals this season, I wouldn't care for clean sheets chance, it's not worth it.

      So, Gibbs or Azpi.

    Got 19 points this week

    Begovic - Foster
    Enrique - Gibbs - Cameron - Shorey - Demel
    Bale - Mata - Michu - Sterling - Puncheon
    RVP - Suarez - Defoe

I wna get walcott in but it looks like il have to take an 8pt hit to do it without removing bale, mata or michu.

Im clueless about what should I do.

Well, Bale is obviously ruled out, and then it'll be wildcard time, so if you're that keen: Bale --> Walcott.
