With four matches in fourteen days, there’s almost too much to digest. Bloated by a feast of football, we nonetheless take time to consider the headline acts, examining the impact of the Emirates flyer, the resurgence on Merseyside and glance, with some expectancy, through the January window…

The Player

Like an impetuous child, Theo Walcott has been tugging at Arsene Wenger’s shirt tails for an opportunity to lead the Arsenal attack; it was surely no coincidence that this finally arrived as contract negotiations with the club reached deadlock. Arsene Wenger relented and deployed Walcott up front in the 5-2 win at Reading, a performance which was dominated by Santi Cazorla’s hat-trick but nonetheless provided a taster of what was to come over the Christmas from the fleet-heeled winger turned striker.

Walcott chipped in with a goal aginast the Royals, following that up with a dubious assist for Mikel Arteta’s spot-kick winner at Wigan. However, the explosion came against Newcastle, as Walcott delivered a Fantasy haul to surpass Cazola’s Reading effort and any in living memory. A hat-trick and two assists ensured that Walcott would come out of the busy four Gameweek spell as the hottest of midfield properties, a status cemented by his assist at Southampton – giving him returns in every match.

With a double fixture beckoning in Gameweek 23, continued investment in Walcott’s new found potential as a striker is surely set to continue. For midfielders, only Marouane Felliani has seen more transfers in so far this week and it’s expected that interest in Walcott will accelerate in the build up to the double with Chelsea and West Ham. Subsequently, we’ve seen Cazorla’s stock and ownership in decline, just three weeks after his biggest score of the season.

Despite struggling at St Mary’s last time out, Walcott’s performance can be excused amongst an abject Arsenal display and, should Olivier Giroud start up front in the FA Cup tie with Swansea this weekend, it will surely assure Walcott a run at the City defence for Gameweek 22. Walcott has been an inconsistent performer in the past but, with a price tag hovering below 9.0 and an explosive quality that can match even Robin Van Persie, the case for acquisition is convincing.

The Team

While United have won every game over the Christmas spell, it is the rise of Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool that offered the biggest new attraction for Fantasy managers. Luis Suarez’s status was already assured, if somewhat damaged by a run of blanks over five Gameweeks going into the Christmas spell. The Uruguayan has emerged from that period in spectacular style, to lead the race for the Golden Boot and, along with Theo Walcott, stand out as the top performer of the past four Gameweeks.

While Suarez’s form was signposted, the consistency offered by Steven Gerrard in midfield and Brendan Rodgers’ defence seemed less likely. The Liverpool skipper has been superb – probing and prompting alongside the rotating Lucas, Joe Allen and Jordan Henderson, Gerrard has returned a goal or assist in six straight league matches and has reinstated himself as a heavy-hitting midfield option to rival the likes of David Silva, Juan Mata and Gareth Bale.

With Suarez ablaze, Gerrard will doubtless be overlooked by many but that may not be the case with the assured Liverpool back four. With Martin Skrtel and Dan Agger settled as one of the more formidable centre-back pairings, Rodgers has few concerns in this area and, in Glen Johnson and Jose Enrique, he has full-backs with the attacking verve to contribute high up the field. Enrique’s hamstring injury at QPR was a cruel twist for his owners and has seen Johnson now emerge as perhaps the preferred recruitment route in Liverpool’s resolute rearguard.

Investment in this flourishing group of players does come with a sizeable caveat, however. Liverpool now face three away trips in four, taking in visits to United, Arsenal and Man City around a potentially more profitable Anfield clash with Norwich. That calls for caution, particularly when it comes to defensive acquisitions. Suarez, however, appears to have little regard for opposition and has the form that could possibly de-rail both United on City as they vie for superiority at the summit, with Liverpool simmering nicely below.

The Talking Point

We now enter a key transitional period in the Fantasy season. Three key factors arrive at once, with players departing for the African Cup of Nations, others moving clubs or arriving on the Premier League scene and, against this backdrop of uncertainty, we keenly clutch our Winter Widlcards.

We shouldn’t forget that, at this time last season, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Papiss Cisse arrived to change the Fantasy landscape. Both had pedigree but few could have foreseen the impact they would have at Swansea and Newcastle respectively, or how they would emerge as almost essential Fantasy purchases over the second half of the season.

Having witnessed such events, Fantasy managers will be anticipating the closure of the transfer window at the end of this month and scouring for similar solutions. It seems unlikely we’ll see players arrive who can hit the ground running with such ease, but perhaps a transfer like Daniel Sturridge’s move to Liverpool, examined in our earlier “Moving Target” article, will be the catalyst for change.

While new arrivals and big money moves will grab the headlines, it could be a simple loan deal or perhaps the departure of a key player, providing the opportunity for an understudy, that could offer us a bargain.

Those chasing mini-league gaps will be craving a shake-up – the arrival of new prospects and the unearthing or rebirth of an exciting talent. Those protecting leads will pray that the status quo remains intact. After all, the current crop of league leaders are often less likely to explore the risks on offer; the transfer window can therefore hand their rivals a lifeline if complacency or security breeds hesitation.

We’re entering a fascinating period, which, like the hectic Christmas schedule, can turn a Fantasy season on its head if the stars align and Fantasy managers can time their trades to catch the new opportunities on offer.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    hi peeps.

2.40am and can't sleep so I thought I'd play the WC and have come up with this. I suppose it's pretty much the template team but I've managed to get Aguero in alongside the obvious. Thoughts appreciated.

    Begovic (Henderson)

    Zabaleta, Shawcroos, O'Brian (Clyne, Pearce)

    Bale, Mata, Fellaini, Michu (Marveaux)

    RVP, Aguero, Suarez

Not looking ahead. There's a West Ham - Arsenal double gameweek and you have a grand total of 0 players from them.

Have to get Walcott, possibly an Arsenal defender, and preferably a West Ham defender too. I wouldn't want to go into the double with no fewer than 3 players from West Ham and Arsenal.

I plan to go in with 5.

    5.9m for a defender.

    Options:

    A - Azpilicueta
    B - Zabaleta
    C - Clichy/Nastasic
    D - Other

Who should I go for? I will probably want some cash in the bank.

I know many of my posts seem to come from nowhere, but if any of you have a few minutes, I would love to see who we might choose if we were all forced away from getting many of the usual suspects we are anticipating in our post WC teams.

What squad would you select if you had 40m (or a nice round # that is pretty close to what most people would have to spend on their 13 outfield players) to spend on 5 players? Must get 1 DEF, 1 MID, 1 FWD and the other two can be from any position -- no goalie necessary.

The only catch would be that all of those responding would be picking different players, so once someone said RVP, he would be gone. Might be a nice way to see who we really value as a Differential without recognizing it in our current WC set-up, and the Deadzone is a nice, slower time to think about it.

If you have a little time and some interest, let me know. Thanks.

I'm a little past my ZZZs but to free up 3.1m I would make the transfer from Mich to Hernandez.

They play there best footty when both are on the pitch and now Hern is back I expect there point haul won't be to far apart from now on in.
In fact I feel Hern is very unflattered by his point tally so far.

Sorry I'm not giving definitive answer to your'e Q but I'm a little tired but I did look at your team

Santiago's guide to an Uber-cheap defence

My Personal favourites at the minute

Cuellar (nailed on/vice captain/already own him)
Turner (nailed on CB 4.1m, alternative: R Martin)
    Davies (nailed on LB 4.2m)
Demel (usually nailed on when fit and no mcCartney around 4.0m, alternative: O'Brien)
Pearce (Reading 3.8m, looks like he may now be nailed on, alternative: Gunter)

    Other options:

    Shaw (4.0m Southampton, alternative: Clyne)
    Nelsen (4.1m QPR Club captain)
Jones (4.4m West Brom, not nailed on but has impressed)
Clark (4.4m Aston Villa, nailed on CB, alternative: Vlaar)
    Wilkinson (4.4m nailed on LB)
Ramis (4.4m Wigan nailed on CB, alternative: Alcaraz)
Hughes (4.4m Fulham nailed on CB, alternative: Baird)
Wilson (4.0m Stoke, soon to be back from injury)

    Risky punts for the craic

Naughton (4.2m Spurs, might play occasionally enough to justify having him)
    Dawson (4.5m ditto)
    Wisdom (4.3m ditto)

Nice list. By the way, I take back my statement about the Ba transfer being interesting -- having spent some time with it, it sucks. He was a cornerstone and the attacks I've drafted without him are not appealing -- just don't want to chase points with Suarez. These cheap defenders might help, so thanks for posting it.

No problem mate! The Ba situation makes it extra difficult for any of us without Suarez. It does make owning Suarez now look a little naive but I'm also trying to resist and go for other options for the moment. I don't like Suarez's next 4 anyway (mun, NOR ars mci) 3 away games to top sides. I wouldn't sell him but I wouldn't be mad to buy him at this exact moment.

I've just seen Everton's fixtures. Have you ever seen a better run of 4 fixtures? NB Only 3 actually count, as I will be WC before the 4th.

Mrs China Mag really wants to get Baines in for that run. But also want to get rid of Torres. She has to get rid of Torres to afford Baines. So is this worth a hit?

Hughes + Torres > Baines + Dave (or any striker up to 9m). Surely the latter will score more than 4 points more than the former over the next 3 games?

Is there anything to suggest that everton will tighten up defensively this year? Have they been missing any defensive players who are due back? I seem to remember they were much stronger defensively in the second half of last season. Any reason for that? If Everton can start keeping clean sheets, i think Baines will start to rip up the template WC teams that we are seeing

They've had every combination under the sun in central midfield (defence has been mostly fit except RB Hibbert but I doubt his absence is a massive reason). You could see it two ways, either the uncertainty hasn't helped defensively (protection from midfield is key for defence) or that shows the problem defensively is not the personnel but the system. I thought Gibson would help, didn't really. I think the simple truth is they have become a more attacking team less focused on defence.

There defence is full strength. But at times they get switched off at the back....
it is just that 1 goal which is giving problem.. they tend to concede that single goal every game.. I m keeping Baines and hoping for the best...

Assuming everyone goes for the template big hitters with this winter WC:

    Walcott - Mata - Michu - Bale - ???

    Suarez - RVP - ???

What do you do with the other 2 spots?

Two mid priced options who rotate perfectly or another big hitter and a bench warmer whose just there to cover for injuries/suspensions/rest.

I can only afford these pairings, which do you think looks best? (playing WC after GW 24)

    A. Walters & Ruiz
    B. Snodgrass & Ruiz
    C. Taraabt & Lambert
    D. Fellaini & Pogrebnyak

So is anyone else of the opinion that they don't really want the extra WC this year. I basically already have the template team, I've had RVP, Suarez, Mata, Berba, Puncheon, Michu & Bego for ages and have recently aquired Walcott, Davies & Sagna.

So basically were I to use my WC today, I'd be keeping most of my team anyway and just changing my chepie DFers & 2nd GK. And it feels like this will be the case still even by the end of the month.

So basically it looks like I will keep my WC as long as I can and try to pick up some new signings or hope that some other players have come into our thinking by then

Yes, as a Caulker owner (and thus someone who has been closely following Spurs DF line-up every week), I would advise you to stay away from all their options barring Vertonghen and Walker if you can afford it.

Were Gallas or Dawson to move on in the January transfer window then things might change, but as things stand stay away from all 3 of those listed

Overall i got most of the star players.. i normally play 3-4-3.. for the double gw i gonna have gibbs, walcott and demel.. that's the player i will have for it..

🙂 OK. I am also leaving my wildcard to the last minute (GW24), which you can easily do with your team. Gallas to Gibbs looks great to me, but I'd get a third Arsenal player in for 23, Pod or Caz if it were me - you'll wildcard straight after and fix it anyway

              good luck!

Well I pulled the WC trigger. I couldn't afford the pending prices rises.

Heres my team and thoughts behind it:

    Bego // Bunn
    Demel // Gibbs // Luiz // O'Brien // Gunter
    Fellaini // Michu // Bale // Walcott // Punch
    RVP // Suarez // Berb

I have enough players for the DGW and also Berb for the Wigan game this GW.
Try out a 343 formation for a few weeks and see.
Reason being, most people are doing the power 5 midfield. So I want to see can I get an edge with an extra striker. So I have chosen to lose Mata for now.

    Plan:
Sell Berb for Dzeko for GW23 and he'll face Fulham if Aguero is still injured or Tevez is out of favour.

I think I have sufficient cover for most performing teams. Luiz hopefully will be enough Chelsea coverage.
Gibbs and O'Brien will be my other two main defenders.

Puncheon is a decent 5th MF if I need to rotate.

If the 343 doesnt work out and I may need to switch to 352, then a -4 point hit can downgrade Luiz and Dzeko for Cameron/Cuellar and Ruiz.

I think there isnt much we can all do to climb much higher in these leagues if everyone is going for the same MFs. Any differential will make the difference.

    What ye think?

There have been several posts recently asking "who is dave?"

Most of you know that it is our very own Papiss Cisse. But how many of you actually know why? Its actually quite amusing. When we signed him, wikipedias profile of him gave his full name as "Papiss Demba RODNEY Cisse". Those of you old enough (or British enough) to remember Only Fools and Horses will understand why he quickly became known as Dave (not just on here, I heard Ian Wright refer to him as "Dave" on the radio). But if you check wikipedia these days, there is no sign of the "Rodney" in his name. Presumably it was just somebody editing his profile for a laugh. There is no other record of his name being Rodney anywhere on the web. But the name has stuck, and proved helpful on here to differentiate the two cisses. Case solved!

    Mata - Michu - Fellaini - Sterling - Puncheon
    RVP - Suarez - Defoe

Plan to wc after the dgw so what would be the best plan for the next two gwks?

Currently set on doing Sterling -> Walcott and Shorey -> O'Brien, your thoughts? Any other suggestions would be welcomed

Keep an eye on Andy Carrol. He is likely to be back for DGW/ Defoe>Carrol next week.

no actually not kidding. A ***one week punt*** if he plays both games is actually an excellent choice if you are WC after DGW anyway.

I understand one week punt but in general i prefer vaz te gets much more involved in the attacking play, when ive watched them both play together.

I can tell you which managers definitely do not.

      Mancini/Benitez/Rodgers

Joe Hart and Micah Richards for sure.

Someone also posted months ago that Olivier Giroud had an FPL account.

Further to the baines debate above, I guess the fact that baines is basically playing as a left winger means that he will get attacking returns, but leave big spaces behind him meaning that everton will continue to concede more. In which case, he won't be worth the price UNLESS everton decide to go 3 at the back OR play him on the left wing, with a left back behind him.

I was the biggest Baines promoter at the start, but 7.5 is so much now. There are so many expensive and worth it options up front, and Gibbs, Rafael, Zabaletta, Vertonghen seem almost as good now
