With four matches in fourteen days, there’s almost too much to digest. Bloated by a feast of football, we nonetheless take time to consider the headline acts, examining the impact of the Emirates flyer, the resurgence on Merseyside and glance, with some expectancy, through the January window…

The Player

Like an impetuous child, Theo Walcott has been tugging at Arsene Wenger’s shirt tails for an opportunity to lead the Arsenal attack; it was surely no coincidence that this finally arrived as contract negotiations with the club reached deadlock. Arsene Wenger relented and deployed Walcott up front in the 5-2 win at Reading, a performance which was dominated by Santi Cazorla’s hat-trick but nonetheless provided a taster of what was to come over the Christmas from the fleet-heeled winger turned striker.

Walcott chipped in with a goal aginast the Royals, following that up with a dubious assist for Mikel Arteta’s spot-kick winner at Wigan. However, the explosion came against Newcastle, as Walcott delivered a Fantasy haul to surpass Cazola’s Reading effort and any in living memory. A hat-trick and two assists ensured that Walcott would come out of the busy four Gameweek spell as the hottest of midfield properties, a status cemented by his assist at Southampton – giving him returns in every match.

With a double fixture beckoning in Gameweek 23, continued investment in Walcott’s new found potential as a striker is surely set to continue. For midfielders, only Marouane Felliani has seen more transfers in so far this week and it’s expected that interest in Walcott will accelerate in the build up to the double with Chelsea and West Ham. Subsequently, we’ve seen Cazorla’s stock and ownership in decline, just three weeks after his biggest score of the season.

Despite struggling at St Mary’s last time out, Walcott’s performance can be excused amongst an abject Arsenal display and, should Olivier Giroud start up front in the FA Cup tie with Swansea this weekend, it will surely assure Walcott a run at the City defence for Gameweek 22. Walcott has been an inconsistent performer in the past but, with a price tag hovering below 9.0 and an explosive quality that can match even Robin Van Persie, the case for acquisition is convincing.

The Team

While United have won every game over the Christmas spell, it is the rise of Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool that offered the biggest new attraction for Fantasy managers. Luis Suarez’s status was already assured, if somewhat damaged by a run of blanks over five Gameweeks going into the Christmas spell. The Uruguayan has emerged from that period in spectacular style, to lead the race for the Golden Boot and, along with Theo Walcott, stand out as the top performer of the past four Gameweeks.

While Suarez’s form was signposted, the consistency offered by Steven Gerrard in midfield and Brendan Rodgers’ defence seemed less likely. The Liverpool skipper has been superb – probing and prompting alongside the rotating Lucas, Joe Allen and Jordan Henderson, Gerrard has returned a goal or assist in six straight league matches and has reinstated himself as a heavy-hitting midfield option to rival the likes of David Silva, Juan Mata and Gareth Bale.

With Suarez ablaze, Gerrard will doubtless be overlooked by many but that may not be the case with the assured Liverpool back four. With Martin Skrtel and Dan Agger settled as one of the more formidable centre-back pairings, Rodgers has few concerns in this area and, in Glen Johnson and Jose Enrique, he has full-backs with the attacking verve to contribute high up the field. Enrique’s hamstring injury at QPR was a cruel twist for his owners and has seen Johnson now emerge as perhaps the preferred recruitment route in Liverpool’s resolute rearguard.

Investment in this flourishing group of players does come with a sizeable caveat, however. Liverpool now face three away trips in four, taking in visits to United, Arsenal and Man City around a potentially more profitable Anfield clash with Norwich. That calls for caution, particularly when it comes to defensive acquisitions. Suarez, however, appears to have little regard for opposition and has the form that could possibly de-rail both United on City as they vie for superiority at the summit, with Liverpool simmering nicely below.

The Talking Point

We now enter a key transitional period in the Fantasy season. Three key factors arrive at once, with players departing for the African Cup of Nations, others moving clubs or arriving on the Premier League scene and, against this backdrop of uncertainty, we keenly clutch our Winter Widlcards.

We shouldn’t forget that, at this time last season, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Papiss Cisse arrived to change the Fantasy landscape. Both had pedigree but few could have foreseen the impact they would have at Swansea and Newcastle respectively, or how they would emerge as almost essential Fantasy purchases over the second half of the season.

Having witnessed such events, Fantasy managers will be anticipating the closure of the transfer window at the end of this month and scouring for similar solutions. It seems unlikely we’ll see players arrive who can hit the ground running with such ease, but perhaps a transfer like Daniel Sturridge’s move to Liverpool, examined in our earlier “Moving Target” article, will be the catalyst for change.

While new arrivals and big money moves will grab the headlines, it could be a simple loan deal or perhaps the departure of a key player, providing the opportunity for an understudy, that could offer us a bargain.

Those chasing mini-league gaps will be craving a shake-up – the arrival of new prospects and the unearthing or rebirth of an exciting talent. Those protecting leads will pray that the status quo remains intact. After all, the current crop of league leaders are often less likely to explore the risks on offer; the transfer window can therefore hand their rivals a lifeline if complacency or security breeds hesitation.

We’re entering a fascinating period, which, like the hectic Christmas schedule, can turn a Fantasy season on its head if the stars align and Fantasy managers can time their trades to catch the new opportunities on offer.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Just that at 4.1m you can afford to wait around for a CS if you rotate him. Baines you have to play every game for the same outcome of 1/2 points. At least that's what happened for the last 3 months.

    Mignolet Bunn
    Evans Azpi Sagna Wilkinson Davies
    Gerrard Silva Lennon Walters Snodgrass
    Aguero Rooney Fletcher

Wouldn't do too bad I think and this is just a quick draft. There may be better options like enrique, Glohnson, zaba, vertonghen, lampard, taarabt, sessegnon, young, jelavic

Suarez owner here keeping a watchful eye for the next points magnet. It's been brilliant holding Suarez over the festive period and the plan is of course to hold for now.
I am clear though that I will use the same criterion I got him in to consider whether to get a replacement - dominant goalscorer in the team. Of course I want Sturridge to increase the size of the pie so both he and Suarez get more too, but being coldly realistic (which is the only way to do justice to your team) that's not how it works. Sturridge will get his fair share of shots if he's not a complete flop, and they won't just come out of thin air.

Bottom line, you don't want goalscoring rivals for your strikers. The mean points show RVP gets considerably stronger returns when Rooney doesn't play. Was true at the season's start, is very much true now. Arsenal effectively play with three goalscoring strikers now (as opposed to supporting wingers feeding RVP last year) and the returns are split between them. Jelavic has suffered from Fellaini. Ba has only done well this season with Cisse relegated to a non goalscoring role. Berbatov has suffered with Rodallega and Petric. Defoe has suffered from Adebayor. And so on.

Anyway, just some food for thought. Suarez owners, keep one step ahead! Will be keeping a close eye on Cisse and Benteke.

yes u have a point here but actually sturridge will build up more pressure on opponents defence making space for Suarez to snap ,, cause Sturridge is a wing not a center forward so actually he wont compete on Suarez position ,, kust imagine Sterling and Sturridge on both sides with Suarez in the center ,, that would be a PARTY 😀 just saying

If there's one time in the season it's now with Aguero sidelined and Balotelli in a bear hug with his manager. Unfortunately I'm not sure there is ever a time in the season ..

Mmm I loved the thought of a PARTY up front () but it was reading Rodgers comments on Sturridge playing CF that forced me to look at this ( http://m.guardian.co.uk/football/2013/jan/03/daniel-sturridge-luis-suarez-liverpool). Sturridge played on the right at Chelsea because he had to, in his good spell at Bolton he was CF. I realized Suarez wasn't going to stay CF.

Gunter and Cummings rotate in 5 week segments. Shorey was ill so there is no guarantee Harte will play every week. Morrison is back fit and Reading have signed that Carrico fella so there is probably going to be even more rotation with the centre-backs.

So to put it simply..None of them.

Needed a differential and went for Cisse who will be the main dude at Castle again. I think he'll remember how to score once restored to the middle of the 3 again.

But yeah what a band, fav album has to be 'You're living all over me'

J Mascis is a hero on the guitar...absolutely love the sound he makes. You know teenage riot by Sonic Youth? The lyrics were inspired by him...and that's pretty much the greatest track ever so what a compliment!

I know and love Teenage Riot, but I know neither band well enough to give a favourite album; I am already downloading your D Jr album. Neutral Milke Hotels In the Aeroplane oer the Sea has been my favourite album of late, I'm sure you'll know it 🙂

Don't get me started on Neutral Milk Hotel... 🙂 that album is simply timeless, if you fancy something similar check out their first album 'On Avery Island'...it's a bit more raw but has the same appeal. I really like another band that the lead guy was in for a bit called Olivia tremor control, they're kind of psychadelic and beatles-y but do it really well. Worth checking them out!

I think the caveat here is that people are considering him instead of Guthrie (i.e super super cheap). I'd rather the occasional brillance of Marveux if forced to play my 5th mid, than the permanent rubbishness of Guthrie (who is equally as likely to drop to the bench by the way)

Also there is an argument to say- has Marveux played his way into the first team over the last few weeks, regardless of others coming back from injury?

I don't see Guthrie being equally as likely to drop to the bench. Guthrie and McDermott had a disagreement but they seem to have settled that, whereas Marveaux just isn't better than Newcastle's alternatives.
I doubt it, he won't be picked over Ben Arfa and it would be suicide having both + Cisse given their inability to track back and work in defence.

I'm thinking of downgrading Begovic, free fund and get Cameron (or Wilson If'm lucky) for Stoke CS coverage. I can play Cameron everyweek like Begovic too.

Begovic 66 saves so far, he got 18 points from saves
Guzan 72 saves = 17 points from saves, but he didnt play first 2 GW.

    What do you think?

Jask, Pod, Walcott, Demel, Noble or

Bale is going to rip QPR apart. I need him in my team; I'm still a mil-odd shy of affording Sterling>Bale so which route would you take to get him in?

    A) The cheapie DF
Decimate my DF even further and get rid of (the so far for me unimpressive) Nastasic for Demel who has DGW looming and seems nailed for the time being.

    B) bye bye Berba
Lose Berbatov for Ruiz. I like A) the best, but this one actually makes a lot of sense when you see Ruiz's stats.

    C) Forget taking a hit, forget Bale and just do Sterling>Felliani for free and worry about Bale after WC. I guess most will choose this but I think Bale will score well in this game and his price will soar as WC's are activated. Plus I havent taken a hit since GW10.

    Team is:

    Bego - Trem
    Nasty - Sagna - Caulker - Davies - McCartney
    Mata - Walcott - Michu - Sterling - Punch
    RVP - Suarez - Berbatov

    Morning.
Brendan Rodgers is prepared to move Luis Suárez "for the common good of the team" to accommodate Daniel Sturridge in the new signing's preferred role as a central striker at Liverpool.

Stupid.... I know. The idea should be is that sturridge should be brought in to accomodate our best player suarez.

He'll play off Sturridge with the fullbacks providing width. I don't really think it will affect his returns.

Maybe but I expected him to play centrally after his awesome season so far. Also, he and gerrard are creating chances at will in the present formation. Doesn't make sense. Maybe Sturridge had a clause in his contract about that. 😛

Suarez – Sturridge – Sterling looks good to me...

If you watch us now, nobody stays in their position, it's very fluid between the front three. Also Suarez is an absolute menace dribbling along the end line.

Sturridge is rumoured to prefer a central striking role....and I'm sure there have been discussions prior to him signing a contract with Pool on this very subject. So I'm sure Rodgers is making these comments to reassure his new signing.

But at the end of the day, if things dont work out with Suarez in a wider position, then no doubts Suarez will be back in the centre in a flash.

It is a worry for us Suarez owners though.
