With four matches in fourteen days, there’s almost too much to digest. Bloated by a feast of football, we nonetheless take time to consider the headline acts, examining the impact of the Emirates flyer, the resurgence on Merseyside and glance, with some expectancy, through the January window…

The Player

Like an impetuous child, Theo Walcott has been tugging at Arsene Wenger’s shirt tails for an opportunity to lead the Arsenal attack; it was surely no coincidence that this finally arrived as contract negotiations with the club reached deadlock. Arsene Wenger relented and deployed Walcott up front in the 5-2 win at Reading, a performance which was dominated by Santi Cazorla’s hat-trick but nonetheless provided a taster of what was to come over the Christmas from the fleet-heeled winger turned striker.

Walcott chipped in with a goal aginast the Royals, following that up with a dubious assist for Mikel Arteta’s spot-kick winner at Wigan. However, the explosion came against Newcastle, as Walcott delivered a Fantasy haul to surpass Cazola’s Reading effort and any in living memory. A hat-trick and two assists ensured that Walcott would come out of the busy four Gameweek spell as the hottest of midfield properties, a status cemented by his assist at Southampton – giving him returns in every match.

With a double fixture beckoning in Gameweek 23, continued investment in Walcott’s new found potential as a striker is surely set to continue. For midfielders, only Marouane Felliani has seen more transfers in so far this week and it’s expected that interest in Walcott will accelerate in the build up to the double with Chelsea and West Ham. Subsequently, we’ve seen Cazorla’s stock and ownership in decline, just three weeks after his biggest score of the season.

Despite struggling at St Mary’s last time out, Walcott’s performance can be excused amongst an abject Arsenal display and, should Olivier Giroud start up front in the FA Cup tie with Swansea this weekend, it will surely assure Walcott a run at the City defence for Gameweek 22. Walcott has been an inconsistent performer in the past but, with a price tag hovering below 9.0 and an explosive quality that can match even Robin Van Persie, the case for acquisition is convincing.

The Team

While United have won every game over the Christmas spell, it is the rise of Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool that offered the biggest new attraction for Fantasy managers. Luis Suarez’s status was already assured, if somewhat damaged by a run of blanks over five Gameweeks going into the Christmas spell. The Uruguayan has emerged from that period in spectacular style, to lead the race for the Golden Boot and, along with Theo Walcott, stand out as the top performer of the past four Gameweeks.

While Suarez’s form was signposted, the consistency offered by Steven Gerrard in midfield and Brendan Rodgers’ defence seemed less likely. The Liverpool skipper has been superb – probing and prompting alongside the rotating Lucas, Joe Allen and Jordan Henderson, Gerrard has returned a goal or assist in six straight league matches and has reinstated himself as a heavy-hitting midfield option to rival the likes of David Silva, Juan Mata and Gareth Bale.

With Suarez ablaze, Gerrard will doubtless be overlooked by many but that may not be the case with the assured Liverpool back four. With Martin Skrtel and Dan Agger settled as one of the more formidable centre-back pairings, Rodgers has few concerns in this area and, in Glen Johnson and Jose Enrique, he has full-backs with the attacking verve to contribute high up the field. Enrique’s hamstring injury at QPR was a cruel twist for his owners and has seen Johnson now emerge as perhaps the preferred recruitment route in Liverpool’s resolute rearguard.

Investment in this flourishing group of players does come with a sizeable caveat, however. Liverpool now face three away trips in four, taking in visits to United, Arsenal and Man City around a potentially more profitable Anfield clash with Norwich. That calls for caution, particularly when it comes to defensive acquisitions. Suarez, however, appears to have little regard for opposition and has the form that could possibly de-rail both United on City as they vie for superiority at the summit, with Liverpool simmering nicely below.

The Talking Point

We now enter a key transitional period in the Fantasy season. Three key factors arrive at once, with players departing for the African Cup of Nations, others moving clubs or arriving on the Premier League scene and, against this backdrop of uncertainty, we keenly clutch our Winter Widlcards.

We shouldn’t forget that, at this time last season, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Papiss Cisse arrived to change the Fantasy landscape. Both had pedigree but few could have foreseen the impact they would have at Swansea and Newcastle respectively, or how they would emerge as almost essential Fantasy purchases over the second half of the season.

Having witnessed such events, Fantasy managers will be anticipating the closure of the transfer window at the end of this month and scouring for similar solutions. It seems unlikely we’ll see players arrive who can hit the ground running with such ease, but perhaps a transfer like Daniel Sturridge’s move to Liverpool, examined in our earlier “Moving Target” article, will be the catalyst for change.

While new arrivals and big money moves will grab the headlines, it could be a simple loan deal or perhaps the departure of a key player, providing the opportunity for an understudy, that could offer us a bargain.

Those chasing mini-league gaps will be craving a shake-up – the arrival of new prospects and the unearthing or rebirth of an exciting talent. Those protecting leads will pray that the status quo remains intact. After all, the current crop of league leaders are often less likely to explore the risks on offer; the transfer window can therefore hand their rivals a lifeline if complacency or security breeds hesitation.

We’re entering a fascinating period, which, like the hectic Christmas schedule, can turn a Fantasy season on its head if the stars align and Fantasy managers can time their trades to catch the new opportunities on offer.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Non football related question. Please feel free to ignore. I've just got a work related dilemma that I wouldn't mind getting some more minds working on.

I work for Mr Softee ice cream in China. Its bloody cold for 4 months of the year, so obviously we don't sell too much ice cream. We sell hot drinks too, but not enough to make it worth while. We've still got wages and other overheads to pay during the off season, and don't make nearly enough from the trucks to cover that. Can anybody think of a use for a fleet of ice cream trucks for 4 months per year? Wouldn't have to make big money, just enough to cover overheads. Two free transfers to anybody who comes up with a good suggestion!

    Cheers

      1) Air-conditioned touring buses for eskimos visiting china

      2) Transporting ninjas

      3) Feminine hygiene collection mobiles (we have them in Australia and they're really quite disturbing

      4) "Cooler" trucks for China-based Fantasy EPL players who are having a bad GW

Sorry - no real serious suggestions but let me think about it over an ice-cream and I'll get back to you today - it's 45 degrees centigrade here today!

No youtube on my work computer i'm afraid 🙁

My boss is keen on not selling anything that might mess with the brand image. Delivering stuff would be fine, as people would just see the truck driving around. But if we were selling baozi and stuff it might look bad.

Saying that, our truck design is a wrap. So I guess we could consider changing the brand name and design for the winter

"We’ve still got wages...to pay during the off season"...well don't employ them full-time

ship the trucks to Australia in the winter and sell ice cream where it isn't "bloody cold"

use the ice-cream trucks to sell drugs...it's what they do in Glasgow anyway

Tried not paying the drivers full time, but stupid chinese labour laws mean that its difficult to employ people on short term contracts. And we would have to re-train a whole new workforce every year.

        I like the glasgow option........

yeah I guessed the communist angle...sorry you're suffering...and most probably the hard-labour rock-breaking camps in China are less attractive than selling hot drinks at a loss

hot drinks and soup are a good idea but at the end of the day they're just normal food for the chinese...so what about heated peanuts like they sell in new-york...they're fantastic

Yeah. But if its mild outside people are still out and about. If they are out and about they still buy hot drinks, and even ice creams. It was 8 degrees and sunny on new years day, and we made a killing. Problems is when it gets really cold, the whole place goes into hibernation!

My advice would be to park up the vans for the winter, they're pretty useless if you don't want to sell ice creams and you're gonna be spending money on fuel to run them anyway...

That doesn't mean you have to waste your labour. Rather than think of a use for the vans, think of a use for the workforce, without their vans.

Sure I can't think of a great example off the top of my head but I bet there's something. Depends whereabout ins china you are... expat area? tourist area? Local area? Big city?

find out what they're good at. Worst case scenario couldn't you get them to run a little market stall during those months? I realise profit margins are pretty low in china unless you're in a tourist area though.

Even the very simple street food which consists of a little gas burner and some spicy meat skewers would be a low cost option! Sweet potatoes? Whatever - You don't actually have to do any work and you're already paying them, so even if the margins are low, profit is profit.

Am I right to bench Taarabt (TOT) this week? Played OOP last week and looked decent, is on most set pieces, and QPR will be charging after beating CHE. Also, Sess coming off at half time last week has me a little worried he may get dropped/be injured.

    Walcott(MCY), Silva(ars), Bale(qpr), Sess(WHU), Taarabt(TOT)
    RVP(LIV), Suarez(mun), Benteke(SOT)

Thing is can we get an accurate picture with Liverpool's tough fixtures? He might only get one goal at ARS / UTD / CITY.

Also think Suarez or Sturridge will play in the weekend FA Cup tie?

The next 2 gives 1 hard (mun) and 1 easy (NOR) game, so whilst a small sample it should give us an idea of how they setup and how Sturridge impacts on Suarez's output.

I'm pretty set on WCing after the DGW, so (ars, mcy) is enough for me to drop Suarez and potentially get him back from GW26 onwards if he looks worth it.

I think Suarez will start and Sturridge will come off the bench this w/e in the FA cup.

I think Ba will do good in Chelsea. He did well in West Ham. Moves to Newcastle produced even more goals. And If he moves to Chelsea then He will even get better with more support. The problem is rotation risk. If the manager is RDM I won't be worry about rotation risk.

I think you should definitely hold off. What free transfer did you make this week?

The w/c you propose isn't drastically different to your team. Why exactly do you want Punch this badly? I know he's a great 5th mid but your 5th mid generally stays on the bench so I wouldn't say it's worth w/c just to get Punch in. Also, I love the Ade punt but Ade AND Bale I'm not so sure about. That's a lot of money in an attack that also has Dempsey and Defoe chipping in with their fair share along the way.

Also, Wilson isn't even fit yet...why the rush? And Azpi, while he looks great is still a rotation risk whatever way you look at it.

I'd stick it out if you can as I don't feel this team is a team that NEEDS a w/c this week. That's all I can say really...

Well this is coming from someone who was very close to a knee jerk w/c last night...so I've been doing my own 'soul-searching' 🙂

Benefits of waiting: you get to take advantage of ANY problems/issues that may arise (injuries/suspensions/new signings)
The w/c window is a long enough one and unless your team is devastated by circumstances beyond your control then you will likely be luckier than a lot of suckers who are building teams in a panic right now without much long term thinking.
More time you give yourself to look at the best options the better your w/c can be in a few weeks (you can assess rotation and dips in form etc)

              Hope that helps

Masyuris was asking about a price for debuchy. I would say 5m. Same as Santon. He is very attacking.

But thinking about it, will they set a price relative to the other defenders on our team (based on last seasons solid defence), or set it based on this season?

      I think he'll be 5.5.

Heard that Coloccini is angling for a move back to Argentina. Any truth in that?

I did put 5.5m. But then realized that our defense has been so bad, they couldn't really justify that price! I'm hoping that he comes in at 5m, and we tighten up for our nice run of fixtures

I know that it sounds ridiculous, but tiote being out for a month, should make us more solid. Also with saylor back, and williamson and simpson out of the picture, we will hopefully be a lot better at the back

I think that it is just a rumour at this stage. I read something last night saying that he had been misquoted, but can't find it now.

Coloccini of last year would be a MASSIVE loss. Coloccini of this year, not so much!

Mirning all! This is probably a stupid question but is it better to hang on to the January wildcard until the end of the month so your team value goes up, or better to do it now when players like suarez are going to be cheaper!?

If the core of your current team are players currently rising in price anyway, then hold off the WC. Maximize the value and right until the end of the WC deadline.

So the news that Sturridge will play down the middle could surely change the fantasy-landscape a bit no? If he's nailed on centrally I'm definitely going RVP Aguero Sturridge.

Sturridge isn't half the player Suarez is, but I reckon fantasy-wise if he can nail down a central role Aguero + Sturridge > Suarez + Berb. I've wanted Aguero all season, and had him twice at the wrong times, when he's fit again seems like a good time to get him.

If Sturridge continues on a Suarez-esque points scoring run then yes. At 3.0m less i wont be complaining.

Looks really good IMO. Johnson has a tough fixture now, but Norwich at home coming up, which is nice. Watch out for Nasty's nailed-on-ness and Aguero news, a Dzeko -> Berba/Benteke/Podolsk move might be a good way to go if Aguero and Tevez are fit.

    Jaaskelainen • Begovic
    Shorey • Harte • Cuellar • Nelsen • Hughes
    Walcott • Puncheon • Mata • Bale • Michu
Suarez • Van Persie • Berbatov

2 FT, £0.5m in the bank.

    Fix a defender & save a FT?

    Thanks in advance. 🙂

I would be looking to get rid of berbatov for the DGW. But you don't have the money for a pod or giroud. Maybe get demel for shorey this week, then do Berba > Cole (!!!) and Nelson > Gibbs next week
