With four matches in fourteen days, thereโ€™s almost too much to digest. Bloated by a feast of football, we nonetheless take time to consider the headline acts, examining the impact of the Emirates flyer, the resurgence on Merseyside and glance, with some expectancy, through the January windowโ€ฆ

The Player

Like an impetuous child, Theo Walcott has been tugging at Arsene Wenger’s shirt tails for an opportunity to lead the Arsenal attack; it was surely no coincidence that this finally arrived as contract negotiations with the club reached deadlock. Arsene Wenger relented and deployed Walcott up front in the 5-2 win at Reading, a performance which was dominated by Santi Cazorlaโ€™s hat-trick but nonetheless provided a taster of what was to come over the Christmas from the fleet-heeled winger turned striker.

Walcott chipped in with a goal aginast the Royals, following that up with a dubious assist for Mikel Artetaโ€™s spot-kick winner at Wigan. However, the explosion came against Newcastle, as Walcott delivered a Fantasy haul to surpass Cazolaโ€™s Reading effort and any in living memory. A hat-trick and two assists ensured that Walcott would come out of the busy four Gameweek spell as the hottest of midfield properties, a status cemented by his assist at Southampton โ€“ giving him returns in every match.

With a double fixture beckoning in Gameweek 23, continued investment in Walcottโ€™s new found potential as a striker is surely set to continue. For midfielders, only Marouane Felliani has seen more transfers in so far this week and itโ€™s expected that interest in Walcott will accelerate in the build up to the double with Chelsea and West Ham. Subsequently, weโ€™ve seen Cazorlaโ€™s stock and ownership in decline, just three weeks after his biggest score of the season.

Despite struggling at St Maryโ€™s last time out, Walcottโ€™s performance can be excused amongst an abject Arsenal display and, should Olivier Giroud start up front in the FA Cup tie with Swansea this weekend, it will surely assure Walcott a run at the City defence for Gameweek 22. Walcott has been an inconsistent performer in the past but, with a price tag hovering below 9.0 and an explosive quality that can match even Robin Van Persie, the case for acquisition is convincing.

The Team

While United have won every game over the Christmas spell, it is the rise of Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool that offered the biggest new attraction for Fantasy managers. Luis Suarezโ€™s status was already assured, if somewhat damaged by a run of blanks over five Gameweeks going into the Christmas spell. The Uruguayan has emerged from that period in spectacular style, to lead the race for the Golden Boot and, along with Theo Walcott, stand out as the top performer of the past four Gameweeks.

While Suarezโ€™s form was signposted, the consistency offered by Steven Gerrard in midfield and Brendan Rodgersโ€™ defence seemed less likely. The Liverpool skipper has been superb – probing and prompting alongside the rotating Lucas, Joe Allen and Jordan Henderson, Gerrard has returned a goal or assist in six straight league matches and has reinstated himself as a heavy-hitting midfield option to rival the likes of David Silva, Juan Mata and Gareth Bale.

With Suarez ablaze, Gerrard will doubtless be overlooked by many but that may not be the case with the assured Liverpool back four. With Martin Skrtel and Dan Agger settled as one of the more formidable centre-back pairings, Rodgers has few concerns in this area and, in Glen Johnson and Jose Enrique, he has full-backs with the attacking verve to contribute high up the field. Enriqueโ€™s hamstring injury at QPR was a cruel twist for his owners and has seen Johnson now emerge as perhaps the preferred recruitment route in Liverpoolโ€™s resolute rearguard.

Investment in this flourishing group of players does come with a sizeable caveat, however. Liverpool now face three away trips in four, taking in visits to United, Arsenal and Man City around a potentially more profitable Anfield clash with Norwich. That calls for caution, particularly when it comes to defensive acquisitions. Suarez, however, appears to have little regard for opposition and has the form that could possibly de-rail both United on City as they vie for superiority at the summit, with Liverpool simmering nicely below.

The Talking Point

We now enter a key transitional period in the Fantasy season. Three key factors arrive at once, with players departing for the African Cup of Nations, others moving clubs or arriving on the Premier League scene and, against this backdrop of uncertainty, we keenly clutch our Winter Widlcards.

We shouldnโ€™t forget that, at this time last season, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Papiss Cisse arrived to change the Fantasy landscape. Both had pedigree but few could have foreseen the impact they would have at Swansea and Newcastle respectively, or how they would emerge as almost essential Fantasy purchases over the second half of the season.

Having witnessed such events, Fantasy managers will be anticipating the closure of the transfer window at the end of this month and scouring for similar solutions. It seems unlikely weโ€™ll see players arrive who can hit the ground running with such ease, but perhaps a transfer like Daniel Sturridgeโ€™s move to Liverpool, examined in our earlier โ€œMoving Targetโ€ article, will be the catalyst for change.

While new arrivals and big money moves will grab the headlines, it could be a simple loan deal or perhaps the departure of a key player, providing the opportunity for an understudy, that could offer us a bargain.

Those chasing mini-league gaps will be craving a shake-up โ€“ the arrival of new prospects and the unearthing or rebirth of an exciting talent. Those protecting leads will pray that the status quo remains intact. After all, the current crop of league leaders are often less likely to explore the risks on offer; the transfer window can therefore hand their rivals a lifeline if complacency or security breeds hesitation.

Weโ€™re entering a fascinating period, which, like the hectic Christmas schedule, can turn a Fantasy season on its head if the stars align and Fantasy managers can time their trades to catch the new opportunities on offer.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

not sure how realistic any of these ronaldo back to united rumours are (though obv it wouldn't be til the end of the season at the earliest) but do you guys agree that if he returned it would be terrible?

for one, look at the la liga table this year when RM have ronaldo and atletico madrid have falcao. now think about what i'd be like say next year if ronaldo and falcao both move!

secondly, i think it would ruin fpl. ronaldo is about as fixture proof and rotation proof as they get and would have pens and fk's too, and is a bloody great player! can't see any consistent alternatives for the armband atm, it could even become essential to own a 14m rvp and a 15-16m ronaldo! crazy

The way to solve it would be to price him so prohibitively high, that you could only afford it if the rest of your team is full of 4m - 4.5m players.

There really shouldn't be any players who are "essential'. All that means is that they have been priced wrongly.

too much cash in defence for my liking. You'd probably get more returns from rotating 2 def under 4.5 than from any of the 3 you've got..

Would downgrade 2 of them and turn Ruiz into someone who scores FPL pts for himself rather than enabling Berb.

Pts for himself, you mean the assist and 2 bonus he got this week, and the goal he scored netting in his first 90mins back 3 days earlier?

I see your point completely, but there's hardly much that excites me up front now, with the Ba situation, and Ruiz is 50/50 to score or it's Berba. Seems counterproductive to me.

I need Chelsea coverage and Azpi offers the best way in for me.

I'd love Mata but just cant do it.

I don't think anyone knows who gets what from the transfer. But if I had to guess, based on what we know, I would say that we are probably left with just enough to cover the agents fees and signings fees, etc that we paid for the original transfer!! Means that we essentially got all of his goals for free (apart from his wages), so we can't really complain. Nobody forced us to structure the contract like that.

Funny when Chelsea mid season whilst struggling grabbed Cahill , arguably Boltons best player at the time. They then went down to the Cahmpionship.
Ba was Newcastle best player. Will they go the same way? If so it sits an uncomfortable pattern.
Further reason to question the mid season transfer window. I understand if it can help out with injury replacements but its also a way of money rich clubs to turn their season around affecting the prospects of lower clubs.
Would Chelsea have won the CL without Cahill? He was immense when Terry was out.

Did anyone see the article in the sports section of the Metro newspaper today about the growth of fantasy football. The writer was saying how, as a national journalist, his first reaction to Chelsea losing to QPR should not have been "serves Rafa right for resting Mata" as he had him captain. He also talked about the repercussions of Demba Ba not playing for Newcastle the other night and how he spends an unhealthy amount of time worrying about Rangel's hamstrings, etc.

The way he was talking, I wouldn't be surprised if he goes on this site. Can't find it on the Metro website.

not much love for an rvpless team here (understandably though) but stubborn as i am, i'm gonna go with this, RMWCT:

    begovic (4.0)

baines, gibbs, g johnson (nelsen, gunter)
    walcott, cazorla, michu, mata, bale
    suarez, berba (pogrebnyak)

obviously 3-5-2 til the end. After double cazorla will be monitored, fellaini and gerrard possible alternatives.

i don't agree. basically i'm betting the 5th highest scoring mid to outscore 3rd forward (well 4th actually as i'm not getting the highest, rvp). atm seems like rvp & suarez will be 1st & 2nd. but 3rd or 4th? Ba? shall i say, Berba?

How about mids then. Bale, Mata, Walcott, Michu, Fellaini, Cazorla. All of these could possibly/will likely outscore the 4th highest scoring forward. That's why im getting 5 mids and 2nd + 3rd highest scoring forward (imo).

not having rvp will hurt, i know. but baines, glen, gibbs shall make it for me.

If there were no captains I'd agree with you. RVP is overpriced if you look at points per dollar.

          However:

          a) you will struggle to spend your money without an overpriced player (even you admit baines is an example of this)

          b) You only get one captain. Sometimes RVP will be the CLEAR captain choice. It is worth the 'poor' value for someone who is going to get double points so often.

b is also exaggerated because RVP STILL has good fixtures until around the last 7 games of the season, at which point united have ridiculously dififcult fixtures (and about time too!)

    Hello,

Which West Ham player should I put in my team before the DGW?

I have 3 Arsenal players; Gibbs, Walcott, Cazorla.

And 1 West Ham player; O'Brien.

I can get Nolan but at a 4 pt hit because of his price.. any other player I can get without taking a hit.

    Thanks! ๐Ÿ™‚

i've got the same players (except mert rather than gibbs - hope he starts soon)

I will wait til next week and get one attacking west ham player. It will definitely be a gamble. This week is too soon to say who, since they might make signings between now and then.

A possiblity id berbatov (who goes to manc) to whichever striker they are playing at the time!

I'll be doing WC straight after anyway so can be a gamble

I had heard this actually. But I seem to remember that there was some reason why he had been out of favour (contract dispute or something). I know that the price quoted now is less than last year, so that would suggest that he has lost some form, and would be just like newcastle to buy him and try and get his form back!

I was talked about earlier, i agree it will be annoying but it might also allow Suarez owners to save 3.0 m by getting in Sturridge if the lad hits the ground running.
Worst case anyway is that Suarez goals turn into assists.

Slightly depressing seeing some of the wildcard teams being posted: everyone seems to be able to afford one extra big hitting midfielder compared to the drafts I've been working put. Thinking there may be a few red arrows in store for me in the second half of the season, and I'm not talking about planes.

Well, this is the moment I've been waiting for. My season strategy has been to take hits for team value to spend in the Jan WC. It has so far been disastrous, even more so than I expected.

But am I confident about my chances with more cash? Not as much as I was. As long as Fellaini, Michu & Berb are still producing and another McClean / Siggy emerges (as they surely will) then TV will not buy that many more points.

You probably just need to pay more attention to timing with the cheaper offerings.

I have the same strategy. I think it's a good idea since the introduction of the jan wc. My rank has suffered a bit but that's more to do with my own mistakes really. No reason why you can't have a high team value and be in the top 25,000 say, with a bit of luck. From now on though with a bit if discipline you should be able to really kick on.

these teams with massive value have one problem:

Either they will have an expensive player on the bench, or they have one player who is permanently on the bench. This means they are not fully utilising their squads with regards to fixtures.

Personally I think it is better to have two fairly cheap players with good value who rotate in fixtures to go on your bench for the hard games - after all the weak teams will often struggle away to the big boys, but knock in a few goals at home to those around them.

An example: Have snodgrass+lambert (they rotate great and you'll have an easy fixture every game) and then it'll free up cash for the rest of the team to be purely big hitters.

I like this post and you're clearly a quality player of the game so I don't want to point out that your Snodgrass & Lambert idea involves having an expensive player on the bench, which you identified as a problem in your first sentence ๐Ÿ™‚

True, but it will only be a couple of weeks before injuries/suspensions/transfers break the template - also, the assumption seems to be that the 'power 5' (why people need to give these naff nicknames I'm not sure) will have a second half of the season like the first half. Chris Glover's article last year showed how rare that is. Having said that, it makes sense to go with the known quantities at this stage, I just don't expect many to still have that midfield a month from now.

agree but what im saying is if he is playing deeper then taking him out before a run of tough games to see how it works out is easier than taking him out before 4 nice fixtures

Suppose yea. I got him cheap and don't want to lose value but if you're not losing much on him it's not the worst plan so long as you leave enough money to get him back.

Hi fellas 2 quick ones.. Just sorting out my WC defense.

    1. Who would you rather had?

    Davies + Zaba or
    Cuellar + Gibbs

    2. Best big hitter defender?
Luiz - high chance of cleansheet and decent attacking
Vertonghen - slightly lower chance of CS but high attacking threat
Zaba - quite decent in both ares and enable me to get better player (Pogre -> Ruiz)

    Thanks

ahhh in that case i would probably choose Davies & Zaba. If Zaba keeps his place his much more an attacking threat than Gibbs, and i think Davies & Cuellar will score similar.

Great to hear. Seems like Davies and Zaba it is.

Now that I think of it I can't really count on CS this year, let alone from a bottom half team such as Sunderland.

For 1) I'm pretty sure people will like Davies more over Cuellar here due to being nailed on in an attacking team like Swansea.

But Cuellar got some decent fixtures up front (SWA rdg ARS wba FUL qpr NOR) and rotates well with Stoke.

Next season I will make two leagues.

One will be called '4 point hit' and the other '8 point hit'. They'll be great for your second, ahem, I mean 'family members' teams.

The rules will be simple: You must take at least a 4 or 8 pt hit respectively, EVERY week (except wildcard) - you can take more if necessary.

The reason for this? I have a feeling the hit leagues (especially 4pt) might do surprisingly well, maybe with some teams doing even better than their first teams (provided people stay focussed). Also it is pretty fun to take loads of hits!

    Who would be interested?

What would be the etiquette with regards to reversing a transfer to take the required 4 point hit?

I.e. someone is happy with their team but needs a 4 point hit to obey the rules - they do 2 transfers:
      Player A -> Player Y
      Player Y -> Player A

      Voila! 4 point hit!

I know I'm overthinking this already but hey, that's who I am ๐Ÿ™‚

Expecting silverware is not allowed anymore either. That's unreasonable. The costliest season tickets in the Prem on the other hand, that's totally fine because you're getting to watch such a great club.

Now I know how the green and gold united fans felt. Except they actually got to win stuff.

Supporting from the heart rather than the head nowadays, that's all that keeps me a gunner.

Thing is, some of the best players they've sold in recent years were hardly world-beaters when they signed them- RVP, Fab, Song.

He has a point. Fans expect investment in the team cause that's what they would do. Unfortunately the people who own the club are only interested in making money. It's a shame the chance had gone for fans to own the bigger clubs. Take my team, Everton. The media suggest we need some rich owners. We've had them for years. They haven't invested a penny in the club but make profit on it every year. It's all about the money!

Decent, i hope no city cover wont hurt you.
They have no European distractions later in the season when the other top teams still do and after this busy period they will only have 1 game week (depending on their FA cup run), which means the likes of Silva and Aguero (most nailed on of their players) will have probably be nailed on for a solid run in until the end of the season. Just a thought.

Yeah, thanks. Will probably get Silva at some point if Walcott fails me, which is very likely ๐Ÿ˜‰

For my WC would you rather have A or B?

    A) Fellaini+Luiz/6.6 defender
    B) Mata+4.1 defender

    Thanks

      A) For the hair. And because everyone will have Mata but not everyone will have Luiz.
