Newcastle moved to bolster their back-four on Friday afternoon with the capture of French international Mathieu Debuchy on a five-and-a-half-year deal. The 27-year-old right-back moves to Tyneside for an undisclosed fee from Ligue 1 outfit Lille and is a significant boost for Alan Pardew as he looks to engineer a climb up the table:

A long-term target of the Magpies manager, Debuchy was close to arriving last summer and, following a campaign that has seen his first-team decimated with injuries, Pardew has wasted little time in clinching the deal this time round – a fact he is clearly thrilled with:

“We are absolutely delighted to have finally secured the signature of Mathieu. It’s no secret we’ve been trailing him for some time now and to have reached this point fills me with great excitement and anticipation in respect of what he will be able to offer the team. At the same time it’s a huge relief to actually have him with us now. He is an established top international player and it is a real coup for this Club that we now have him at St. James’ Park. Mathieu will add real quality to our team, in terms of his ability, character and experience and I am sure he will quickly become a firm favourite among our fans too.”

The Statistics

Debuchy has been a one-club man until this month. Starting in the Lille youth system, he made his debut in the 2003-04 campaign and, quickly establishing himself as a first-team regular, has turned out for the French club for the past 10 seasons. His displays at both ends of the pitch were crucial in helping Lille achieve a league and cup double in 2010/12 – the first time they have managed to do so since the 1945-46 season. Making a total of 231 appearances, he returned 16 goals and 13 assists, finding the net five times in the previous campaign. The full-back has also represented his country on 12 occasions, supplying a goal and a pair of assists.

The Prospects

Given Pardew’s determination to acquire his services, there seems little doubt Debuchy will be installed as an integral member of the Newcastle first XI. With previous first-choice right-back Danny Simpson currently injured, the new boy is likely to be handed an immediate chance to impress as the Magpies attempt to climb the table, following a bitterly disappointing first five months of the season.

Sitting just two points off the drop zone, Newcastle’s defence have been a pale imitation of the one that produced 15 clean sheets last time round. So far, they have managed to keep out their opponents on three occasions and have conceded 39 goals – just two less than the league’s worst defence, Aston Villa. With two or more goals conceded in eight of their last 10 Gameweeks, it’s more than apparent the Magpies need a shot in the arm – Debuchy is convinced his arrival could have the desired effect:

“I will play like I used to for Lille, with the same qualities. I don’t leave anything on the field and give more, and I hope I will bring a lot to this team. I like attacking. I like getting forward down the right and I will always be strong in the challenge. Don’t forget, the most important thing is to defend. After that, if I feel better, I can bring something extra for the attackers. I hope I can be ready as soon as possible, to bring something new to the team.”

Likely to come in around the 5.0 mark in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Debuchy’s combative nature, allied with his delivery from the flank will be key for the Magpies. With Pardew hopeful that many of his key regulars, including Steven Taylor, Hatem Ben Arfa, Jonas Gutierrez and Yohan Cabaye, could be back before next month, it’s difficult to see Newcastle fare quite as badly over the remainder of the season.

If the injuries dissipate, an upturn in solidity looks likely and Debuchy’s attacking sensibilities are likely to catch the eye, with Pardew looking for him to supply width from deep if, as expected, the Magpies revert to 4-3-3 in light of Demba Ba’s departure. Fantasy managers will be understandably wary for now but the new boy could well be barging his way onto radars if he can replicate his rampaging Ligue 1 form in his new surrounds.

      Why the sad face?

Think it's a good time to WC now if your team has a solid spine of 7-8 players (as most doing well do) that you wouldn't want to change anyway like Michu, Mata, Berbatov, RVP, etc. You can fill in gaps with WH/CHE/ARS/SOT players and slowly take them out. Really not difficult at all - You have a squad of 15 - you can have 6 DGW players and 9 "main" players that don't move - and slowly work on those 6 for the bench or transfers out...

Lateriser - just read your article on your WC plans. Thanks v much; made for a really interesting read and has me questioning my own plans (no bad thing). Let me know if you're about and have a minute, I've a couple of questions I'd like your thoughts on. Cheers.

I agree, it made me question my plan a bit too.

Certainly does look like a good plan, but then I am wary of losing other quality DGW players that also have good form and good fixtures to boot.

I'd always planned to WC in GW 24 and end up with a balanced 3-4-3 involving Azpil, Nasty/Zaba and Evans at the back. Since I don't have Mata/Suarez already, if I WC now, building both into the team will be impossible, I'd have to sacrifice Mata for Hazard, but would give me 11 DGWs players rather than 9 and just mean a 4pt hit rather than 8pt. I can't really see the drawback of applying your strategy, other than a weaker defence after GW24. Does the Hazard rather than Mata issue undermine the plan?

            Cheers Lateriser. That was a bit rambling above, in summary, it's the difference between going into GW24 with;

WC now = No hits, having played 11 DGW players and having
            Bego T’bull
            Mert Azpil O’Brien Demel Clyne/Shaw
            Bale Walcott Michu Hazard Noble
            RVP Suarez Lamb

WC GW24 = -8pt hits, playing 9 DGW players and having
            Bego Rudd
            Nasty Azpil Evans Demel Wilson
            Bale Walcott Michu Fellaini Marv
            RVP Suarez Berba

I'd still say Walker. Vertonghen is on the bench again, and whilst Assou-Ekotto returns, Naughton has still been very good on the left side. I can't say if anyone of them is gonna be starting all the time, but I think Walker has the better chance.

Half time talk: Roman just give the cash and the contract to that Cashley boy. No chance Bertrand to be near good as him. We are much more dangerous with him and Cesar as full backs. U saw the QPR game no threat at all, especially against team that defend against us we need Cashley kind of an performance.

Assuming we have a Chelsea DGW...

Are those without Mata getting him in? It means Suarez > Lambert (already have Puncheon) and Pie > Mata for a hit.

I could do Bale/Cazorla > Mata. but that seems like a sideways/backwards move.

Could just do the latter as a one-week thing, then get Cazorla back in the following week.. Wouldn't get rid of Suarez though, no way.

Well I would effectively need Mata to score more than 8 points to justify doing that... not sure it makes sense. Plus I would lose the rises on Cazorla (got him in at £9m).

You're also right that selling Suarez seems daft.

        Not selling Bale either.

Yeah, but it's the only way I can get Mata without taking Bale out. Wouldn't do it normally, but it's the Nolan DGW next week, and I could bench him as my front 8 would be:

          Mata/Bale/Walcott/Puncheon (DGW)/Nolan
          RVP/Suarez/Berba

I don't think it's the worst idea. It COULD hurt you, but we can't guarantee that Mata will play both games. Luiz might be the one that really hurts people. I'm doing Johnson > Luiz.

Luiz has returned a whopping 9 points in his last 3 games as a holding midfielder - 3 points per game. What's the obsession with him?

Does anyone on here watch the matches? He's given the ball away 50% of the time...

              This 'experiment' isn't working.

Yes - he is on some direct free kicks but would have been from CB anyway.

I guess with Mikel in Africa and Terry injured, his starts look pretty assured but he has not impressed in an "out of position" role by any means.

It's a really difficult one, I have no idea who to drop out of the front 8 either. Stupid as it sounds, getting Nolan would mean I could bench him and then have him for the DGW, and I can't afford the Mata move without it.

Moses, Mata, Hazard, Oscar, Azpi? All good enough value I think, Oscar and Hazard still yet to fully live up to that price tag but they are only young guys and are already easily capable of playing at this level.

Ba is really tempting but I can't see him being played alongside Torres, so there's probably little chance of him seeing two games.

In reckon he'll come on as a sub against Stoke for last 15-20mins and start against Southampton (assuming this result stays the same)... Could be worth it...

If Chelsea do have the DGW, what do people think to this for a hit...

Johnson > Demel (to fund the 2nd transfer + DGW23)
      Michu > Mata(c)
