Abounding in every kitchen, but an unsatisfactory meal in themselves: budget defenders are the condiments of the Fantasy football feast. Only earning a place at the table if they marry with the main course, for every ketchup there’s a forgotten chutney, peacefully gathering mould in the dusty recesses of the cupboard. With few Fantasy managers ambitious of employing their free transfers to chop and change the cheapies that no longer cut the mustard, and fewer still prepared to pay points to preserve themselves from such pickles, Winter Wildcard season affords a welcome window to clear the shelves and stock up afresh for the closing months of the campaign:

Boasting both long term promise and short term appeal, Swansea’s Ben Davies stakes a claim as the most appetising option in the budget bracket at present. Promoted to the starting line up in the wake of Neil Taylor’s broken leg on September 1, the young Welshman has ably fended off competition from emergency signing Dwight Tiendalli to make the left-back berth his own. Initially priced at just 4.0 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL), a cool million less than the rest of the Swansea rearguard, Davies has emerged as the obvious choice for those keen to tap into the clean sheets on offer from Michael Laudrup’s side.

Swansea sit joint seventh in the Premier League in terms of clean sheets, and fifth in terms of fewest goals conceded – on both counts that’s comfortably ahead of Manchester United, and crucially it’s a better defensive record than the other teams with budget defenders on offer. Of players with an initial price of 4.0 in the FPL, Davies currently sits third in terms of total points on 56, with only the potentially Canada-bound Ryan Nelsen and the hamstrung Hammer Joey O’Brien ahead of him. Even if Nelsen stays at Loftus Road and O’Brien quickly recovers, the Swans’ fixture list should afford Davies the chance to challenge for the top spot over the coming weeks.

Stoke arrive at the Liberty on Saturday in uncharacteristically shaky form, having shipped 10 goals in their last three games and failed to find the net away from the Britannia since December 1. Following that are trips to Sunderland and West Ham – both of whom boast an underwhelming tally of just 24 goals for the season thus far. As the spring approaches the Swans host strugglers QPR and Newcastle, with a testing trip to Anfield tucked in between.

Priced at just 4.2 in the FPL (3.6 in the Sky Sports game) Fantasy managers are likely to have few qualms about playing Davies at home and benching him for tricky away trips but it’s worth noting that the Swans backline has been breached just twice in their last five away games. Indeed, a total of nine goals against outside of the Liberty is the joint-best away defence along with Arsenal. With fullbacks afforded license to roam in Laudrup’s system, those who opt for a home-only schedule over the short-term (STK, QPR, NEW) should provide Davies good chances to augment his haul of two assists and reap returns at both ends of the pitch.

    One to watch: Kyle Naughton at 4.2m, he could be a potential bargain if he takes Assou Ekotto's place at left back, the match vs United will tell if hes 1st choice or not

      Problem is that Vertonghen can play left back (and well too). In fact he recently said that its his preferred position, but we need him at center back. So theres too many potential replacements in my opinion, its a big risk.

      Only thing I would say though is that he should either play 90 minutes or none, so hell either possibly get some pointes, or the dreaded big scoring sub might replace him?

      Also BAE should return soon. I don't see Naughton keeping his place.
      Also, I very much don't like when right footed player plays on LB, but it's not my call.

      Ya he has plenty of options alright, I had him chosen in my WC team but took him out last minute before the QPR game because I thought Assou Ekkoto would play but AVB seems to be a fan of Naughton. Naughton himself came out to say that AVB respects the way he plays and that he hopes to be on his 1st team sheet even though Assou-Ekotto is back

      I'd worry about Harte, Aqua. He's well old and Shorey is looking over his shoulder. Pearce or Mariappa seem safer options, but no one is safe with McDermott tinkering.
      You're so anxious to get Fellaini in for a -4? Can it not wait til next GW?

                  not really tbh. way i see it this week if you bring in an extra double gw player this week. Its half price hit (as they a guarateed 2 extra points). Your spending 4 points on one player as harte will be on the bench.

    Pick a one-week-punt-before-WC.

    A) Sterling -> Nolan
    B) Sterling -> Joe Cole
    C) Torres -> Aguero/ Tevez/ Dzeko (depending on Ageuro news)
    D) Torres -> Lukaku
    E) Torres -> P Cisse
    F) Torres -> Sturridge

    Sorry it's a big list....and thanks!

    CF.. i saw your point above. Are you a member? Over the past 2 games, Fellaini's stats completely destroy the likes of Mata, Bale, Michu and Walcott.. like over 75-80%.

    What do you suggest then? Team linked. Im worried as ML opponent has WCded this week since I passed him for the first time this season. 31pts in the lead with Mata(C), Luiz, Lambert and Punch as differentials to his Luiz(C).

        What's wrong with my team? Would lose too much value on Bale so no Caz for me.

        Ba > Podolski a possibility though.

        What don't you like about my team btw? Just set it up more focused on DGWs, but can easily be altered afterword as I have the main core of players I want to keep (Bale, Mata, Michu, Wally, RVP..)

      Fellaini has played the last couple of games as a CM because of Anichibe's good form. This may continue limiting Fellaini's attacking threat.

    Alreet lads.

    So now Remy has chosen to follow the money and the path to relegation with QPR, we are in the market for a player who can play across the front 3 (primarily wide). Any suggestions? We're supposedly keen on Aubemeyang from St Etienne (the king of bling). But nothing concrete. Who else can I epxect us to be linked with in the next ocuple of days? Budget around 10m (though I guess that would stretch for the right player)

      QPR have been a disappointment this season with all the signings they made in the summer. They have an ambitious project so its no surprise that they are spending big again and under Redknapps guidance I'd expect them to survive.

        Yeah. But both these players are MASSIVE gambles. Both are valued at half of what they were one year ago. There clubs are willing to let them go so cheap for a reason. Don't get me wrong, I would have taken the gamble on Remy for the toon. We should have enough to avoid relegaiton, and even if we did we are financially sound enough to survive. The Remy signing is the type of signing that Ashley likes to make. Big players, who have fallen by the wayside, but with the potential to get back to the top. But for QPR, what happens if Remy gets injured, or doesn't find his form? Nobody is going to take the likes of bosigwa off their hands, so if they are relegated, they will be in BIG trouble

        I saw the story. But it didn't seem very promising. Also, I got the impression he is more of a no.10 type, rather than a wide player, so not really what we need (we have barfa and cabeye for that position). You know much about him?
