Abounding in every kitchen, but an unsatisfactory meal in themselves: budget defenders are the condiments of the Fantasy football feast. Only earning a place at the table if they marry with the main course, for every ketchup there’s a forgotten chutney, peacefully gathering mould in the dusty recesses of the cupboard. With few Fantasy managers ambitious of employing their free transfers to chop and change the cheapies that no longer cut the mustard, and fewer still prepared to pay points to preserve themselves from such pickles, Winter Wildcard season affords a welcome window to clear the shelves and stock up afresh for the closing months of the campaign:

Boasting both long term promise and short term appeal, Swansea’s Ben Davies stakes a claim as the most appetising option in the budget bracket at present. Promoted to the starting line up in the wake of Neil Taylor’s broken leg on September 1, the young Welshman has ably fended off competition from emergency signing Dwight Tiendalli to make the left-back berth his own. Initially priced at just 4.0 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL), a cool million less than the rest of the Swansea rearguard, Davies has emerged as the obvious choice for those keen to tap into the clean sheets on offer from Michael Laudrup’s side.

Swansea sit joint seventh in the Premier League in terms of clean sheets, and fifth in terms of fewest goals conceded – on both counts that’s comfortably ahead of Manchester United, and crucially it’s a better defensive record than the other teams with budget defenders on offer. Of players with an initial price of 4.0 in the FPL, Davies currently sits third in terms of total points on 56, with only the potentially Canada-bound Ryan Nelsen and the hamstrung Hammer Joey O’Brien ahead of him. Even if Nelsen stays at Loftus Road and O’Brien quickly recovers, the Swans’ fixture list should afford Davies the chance to challenge for the top spot over the coming weeks.

Stoke arrive at the Liberty on Saturday in uncharacteristically shaky form, having shipped 10 goals in their last three games and failed to find the net away from the Britannia since December 1. Following that are trips to Sunderland and West Ham – both of whom boast an underwhelming tally of just 24 goals for the season thus far. As the spring approaches the Swans host strugglers QPR and Newcastle, with a testing trip to Anfield tucked in between.

Priced at just 4.2 in the FPL (3.6 in the Sky Sports game) Fantasy managers are likely to have few qualms about playing Davies at home and benching him for tricky away trips but it’s worth noting that the Swans backline has been breached just twice in their last five away games. Indeed, a total of nine goals against outside of the Liberty is the joint-best away defence along with Arsenal. With fullbacks afforded license to roam in Laudrup’s system, those who opt for a home-only schedule over the short-term (STK, QPR, NEW) should provide Davies good chances to augment his haul of two assists and reap returns at both ends of the pitch.

Guys, quick question about the RMT function just to make sure I'm reading things right.

When it has a B next to a player followed by a number, is this the estimate as to where they should sit on your bench?

MU has been keeping it pretty tight though lately. But so does City.

I'm on the fence as well with either Rafael or Zaba. Why did you pick Evans rather than Rafael though?

I'd go with Evans (or in my case Rafael though). Save a FT for GW 27 and they got similar fixture really but MU got 2 home instead of City 2 aways.

MU has traditionally good defensively vs Everton (except for last season 4-4) and Fulham.

Call me crazy, but i personally think that Rafa has more rotation threat than Evans. plus Evans is 0.2 cheaper.

I'm still considering both, but Zaba's got 4 votes here to Evans' 1.

Lol no competition. Is Ben Davies at Chelsea no... Is he a potential out of position prospect no... Is he on any set pieces no... Is he a threat from open play no. Luiz is on target to land a big points tally between now and gw38 if he can deliver. Play and forget

His 'OUT OF POSITION' gives him almost nothing more as he plays the MIKEL role. His free kicks are okay and he is a threat from corners, but the potential of a swansea clean sheet is far bigger then that of chelsea - and ben davies has gotten a few assists and bonus points this season.

Davis for me, i understand that some people may prefer luiz but it isn't really that black and white as you put it.

Yeah surely. Punts called Power 5 😉

Kun looks like will be the man. I might even captain him some times. he has low ownership and has the potential to do some damage. Especially if RVP has some off day sometimes. Also I am looking at another Danny boy who is a scorer, cheap and low owned. That is it.

And I hope finally to have some goals from my back line I haven't got a goal whole season beside Gallas. I always get goals from the back I paid more for the goal threat but nothing this year. That changes and I will go up in the rankings.

Additional comment from my experience. I know maybe it sound silly but playing the obvious players near the end pays of. Something like the Power 5 or so. I don't know why but it works, like back in the days with Valencia, Sess, VDV. Like before with Malouda, Lamps, Arteta etc. U need only to consider options for the most owned player, like last year with Silva. He was owned almost by 50% of the players. As soon as I sold him I went up in the rankings. This time I am itchy on my fingers with Michu. He is owned by almost 50 % and no point in having a player owned by that much of a players. Also my heart, soul and hope are on last year Master of a piece article Season of two halves so someone will come up. The lads ala Michu in first half won't be that good in the second. So is he capable of 25 - 30 goals? He could but the odds are against him.

P.S. Loved that Del Boske watched Michu and he definitely need to be called for Spain.

        Cheers,
        Any comments ?

No. He started at £14m and went to at least £15m the last season he was at United. Plus you get more points for midfielder (extra point for goal and clean sheets), so he'd be more expensive as a mid.

      A wild guess: £14m midfielder, £13.5m striker.

Podolski hasn't done a full 90 minutes yet.

In all honesty, I probably will only go with Gibbs and Walcott for Arsenal coverage.

talent will always shine no matter what it does.

even if it's just posting self indulgent yet witty comments on FFS

I agree, thinking more Kramer from Seinfeld, but perhaps without the racism.

Anyone know if the signings of M'Villa and Remy will limit Taatabts game time? Im dont know much on either of them?

M'Villa plays deeper, Remy is more of a winger/striker no? So I don't think either are likely to threaten him for his number 10/false nr 9 role. Redknapp seems to have faith in him as well.

Not really, it will bring more value to him instead as M´Villa is a defensive midfielder with quality pass and Remy plays as forward or winger.

400 in already today, I'd say he's very likely to go up before deadline.

Torres needs to go to other clubs... Seriously what 40€ transfer this player is giving ?

If he puts a transfer request... He will go to lower leagues right ?
