634x258 The Stock Check

A superb second-half comeback from Southampton stuns Stamford Bridge and denies Rafa Benitez a much-needed home win. Demba Ba notches a first league goal for the Blues, while strikes for Rickie Lambert and Jason Puncheon ensure that Gameweek 22’s double was a profitable one. With the FA Cup replays covered in the Scout Notes to follow, here’s the Stock Check on tonight’s league action…

On the Up

Demba Ba
The talk before the game was that the Senegalese striker was unlikely to start two matches in the space of four days but, by naming him in the lineup ahead of Fernando Torres, there is perhaps already a pecking order forming. Ba duly took just 25 minutes to again show his quality with a first league strike for his new club. Ba owners will, however, be concerned on possible rotation ahead of the visit of Arsenal and it’s likely that, week-to-week, that threat will remain with Torres waiting in the wings.

Eden Hazard
The Belgian timed a return to form perfectly to reward double Gameweek investors, scoring for the second consecutive match to take him to six goals for the season. With a seven-point return before bonus, Hazard matched the much-fancied Juan Mata in the Gameweek, despite the Spaniard’s hat-trick of assists at Stoke.

César Azpilicueta
The decision to rest Branislav Ivanovic to the bench and retain the Spaniard at right-back could be seen as a huge vote of confidence. While Ivanovic was perhaps due a break, Azpilicueta has now started the last six and 11 of the last 12 league outings. Keep the role for the visit of Arsenal and we can start to consider him as Rafa Bentiez’s first choice for that position, with Ivanovic perhaps destined to compete for the central defensive roles.

Rickie Lambert
Thirteen consecutive league starts came to an end as Nigel Adkins opted to stat with Guly Do Prado in his side, presumably feeling that Lambert needed to rest his legs for the home clash with Everton. Once again, however, he was not to be denied, cracking his second strike of the Gameweek to repay those who showed faith in the Saints’ hitman. With ten goals for the season, Lambert goes on presenting superb value for his modest price tag.

Jason Puncheon
A first goal in six league starts was worth the wait as the Southampton winger silenced the Chelsea fans with a strike of real quality. Like Lambert, Puncheon remains a hugely popular choice at the budget end of the market and, with doubts mounting on Raheem Sterling’s security of start for Liverpool, tonight’s goal will have boosted Puncheon further in the minds of potential suitors searching for a fifth midfielder in their January wildcard selections.

Nathaniel Clyne
The right-back completes Southampton’s trio of strong budget options having returned his third assist of the season in tonight’s game. With Luke Shaw also impressing on the left flank, Nigel Adkins’ side have two 4.0 options that appear to present an attacking intent that warrants interest.

Going Down

Branislav Ivanovic
We can’t be hasty and start to question Ivanovic’s security of start just yet – particularly given the fact that the Serb has started the last 14 competitive matches for the Blues. He was due a rest at some point and Rafa’s decision could be made with the visit of Arsenal in mind. However, having made glaring errors in the recent Capital One Cup tie, Ivanovic owners are suddenly fidgeting at the prospect of the 7.1 valued defender slipping down the pecking order and competing with the likes of Gary Cahill, John Terry and David Luiz for a central defensive role.

Fernando Torres
Does Rafa’s decision to start with Ba once again suggest that, already, the Senegalese striker is in the driving seat for the centre-forward role? The weekend clash with Arsenal will tell us more. Should Torres find himself benched again, it will indicate a pecking order has been established.

David Luiz
Back in defence for the second match running, Luiz owners will now be concerned that Rafa has cooled on the idea of deploying the Brazilian in a midfield role. John Terry’s likely return is set to add to the completion for starts at the back and with Luiz having started the last seven, there will be concern that a rest is also on the horizon.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Ba, obviously, faces direct competition from Torres so basically I wouldn't, as much as everyone on here, consider him a nailed on player. You asked long term, without a doubt, Aguero has to be it and the last slot is a competition between Lambert and Ba but I went with Lambert.

Fair point, but I'd love to have two consistent performers and punt your third forward all the way on the basis of short term form. Lambert, in my opinion, is a long term consistent performer.

@Tina.. here is my thinking atm.

    Bego, Bunn
Luiz, GIBBS, DEMEL, Davies, R Martin
    WALCOTT, Bale, Mata, Michu, Punch
    Rvp, Ba, Lambert

    0 banked, 1FT

My only possible transfer this week is Ba > Podolski. Yes, its a risk, but I think it could pay off due to DGW (though i think Ba will start again vs ARS)

After DGW, ditching Luiz+Punch and getting Fellaini+Wilson/cheapo.

After that, I'm clueless, so just gunna go with the flow. Leaving me stuck with the German who can't last 90 mins...

    Potential Watchlist for future:
    -Sturridge vs. Suarez
    -Zab (possibly for Gibbs)
-Aguero (would have to ditch a mid)

      Mata,Bale,Walcott, Fell,
      RVP, Lamb, Suarez

      Subs : Lamp, Martin, Naughton

Does the order look good or get in Lamp for Lambert. Everton look tough at back.

You selling Walcott after the DGW for Felliani?

My WC should be similar with Bego/bunn/demel/davies/bale/mata/punch/mata/rvp. Arsenal cover for me after the dgw me thinks.

The issue however is who is going to be that player that will shoot you up the rankings now that we are in the last 16 fixtures, as Daniel correctly pointed out. Kun/Sturridge starting to fire with Suarez & Co tapering off might be it.

If you are keeping wally, how are you getting Felli?

Michu/Bale/Mata/Punch are set in stone for me, so it's Felli or Walcott. I suppose Mata could be sacrificed for Ba, but then Ba/Kun/Rvp leaves no space for Sturr/Suarez.

Get SG and you/i'm back to Felli vs Walcott.

No. I would be doing Luiz+Punch > Fellaini+cheapo. Giving me the Power 5 (or whatever you call it).

              So its either
              A) Power 5 + RVP Podolski Lambert (upgrade Pod after)
              B) Mata Bale Michu Wally Punch + RVP Aguero Lambert.

it starts in 2 hours 15 minutes.

Not a great week considering Mata captain... 75.

But kept all my ML leads intact and got thru the cup and got another green arrow (on best streak ever)

      Almost.
Luiz to Gibbs & Berbatov to Podolski.
But I'm tempted by Wilshere after last night.
Who do u think is really necessary?Gibbs/Podolski/Wilshere?

        RVP, Suarez, Lamb

        subs Lamp, R martin, Naughton

Thinking Lamb to Podolski for DGW but he looks out of form but is in form so you think it might pay off

Ba will be playing more than 60 minutes in each game, i gurantee you that. Torres is going worse day by day, he should have scored 2 goals against southampton. 😡

Anyways i am sticking with Ba this month along with Mata.

I am going for sturridge this week as a differential for this week.
    Berbatov ➡ Sturridge

He is worth a punt than Podoloski.

Got him at 7.7 and selling him feels so wrong....
BUt i would still go Podolski over Sturridge for dgw

Yes.. only if he starts.. I will stay away from Sturridge.. he never assists.. too selfish imo..

Pod for DGW is worth a punt considering Chelsea's form in the last 3 home games and WHU's defense..

It's a no loss for me on either transfers, but you guys insists me to go for pod then.

So berba ➡ Pod for me.

Sticking with Ba and going for 5 dgw players... Gibbs,Walcott,Podoloski,Demel and Jasskalein.

I was contemplating having Bunn in my WC along with Begovic and then found out that the Stoke - Reading rotation is pretty sweet actually.

    WIG - SUN - RDG - WIG - WHU - AVL/SOT - (liv) - QPR - QPR

With Liverpool away bring the only hard fixture! Eureka!

So now the question is do i play Puncheon vs EVE, bench Berba and get in Gibbs for Gorkks? Just doesn't feel right benching Berba, knowing i'm selling him on my WC as soon as the first ball is kicked in gw 23.

@Acqua - you really think this DGW will be a waste of space?

Any idea if i should lose Berba for westham striker and then bench Punchy? For -4?

Or maybe gamble on on Jussi or double up on Westham defender?
