And so it begins – Newcastle have accepted a club record fee reported to be in excess of £35 million from Liverpool, a new record for the club and a fee that will make him the most eighth most expensive player in the history of football. This comes after the Newcastle Number 9 handed in a transfer request which was accepted by the Magpies after the club had previously turned down two Liverpool bids for their top-scorer.

An official statement on the Liverpool website reads:

“Liverpool FC confirmed this afternoon that Newcastle United had accepted a Club record offer for the transfer of Andy Carroll. The Club have been given permission by Newcastle to discuss personal terms with the player, who will now travel to Liverpool for a medical.”

Carroll is currently valued at 6.2 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game and has been a revelation this season with a return of 113 points, including 11 goals, 6 assists and 18 bonus points. He has been one of the most owned players in the game and, even though he has missed the last four Premier League games though injury, 30.9% of Fantasy Manager have kept him in their squads.

The striker has recently been in Sweden seeing a specialist because of his aforementioned thigh injury and, if terms are agreed and the medical passed, he will not be expected to make his Liverpool debut against Stoke on Wednesday (February 2) or even Chelsea on Saturday (February 6). Carroll’s first Liverpool outing would most likely come in the fixture with Wigan on February 12.

Carroll will form a new look partnership with Luis Suarez with Fernando Torres’ departure to Chelsea now looking inevitable.

johnfinlay John swears he'll deliver unbiased Fantasy Premier League tips and news...until Leeds get promoted.

Just wish Liverpool would've gotten someone with some pace for out on the wing. It's like they're hoping for an eventual 4-1-1-1-1-1-1 formation.

obviously, just FPL are normally so slow at changing players teams. Most wldnt/shdlnt, but cld see one or two wanting to bring a player whose incorrect team means they have too many... more a point on how slow FPL are sometimes to update/ add players to the game

Clark, not convinced on, would rather a BHM defender for double, and he is just back from injury?

Tell you what, all this money changing hands makes Wenger look like a absolute genius. He never spends big and yet manages to have a great footballing squad (who, granted never win anything). If they win the league, cup, whatever this year it puts most of the other managers to shame.

            V persie - bout 9m
            Walcott - bout 8m
            Song - a pittance
            Diaby - a pittance
            Vermaelen - 10m
            Sagna - 5m
Arshavin is bout the most expensive at bout 17m

Yeah but Chelsea are massively in debt and are ruled with an iron fist, or curtain. Not so much a club than a pet project.

Man U are massively in debt though have a much stronger base built around Ferguson.

Arsenal are bout to peak with a great squad and could do real damage this year (though I think they're defence is still their achilles heal...)

You have to consider how much more money Chelsea and United have had to spend over those 5 years.

Arsenal could have spent money they didn't have, and ended up like the other three teams in around the top regions of the league 5 years ago; Liverpool, Newcastle and Leeds.

Yes. Liverpool could easily have got to the end of the season without Carroll and reevaluated, letting that £35m (whatever the latest is) sit accumulating interest. Then they've had time to consider what they really need to do, instead of chucking money at whoever is available.

THAT'S a proper business lesson, not allowing yourself to get ripped off.

The others all bought for sensible amounts too.

It really is quite admirable. Must be good for the players too, they all get their chance and get developed properly. Hard to imagine players being unhappy with the system - but if you compare it to somewhere like Citeh...

Why? only Bale and Nasri are injured - the other two might explode at new clubs, or simply not move anywhere, in which you're where you are now. Sit tight if I were you.

Hmmm maybe Szchezxvwzzny or whatever he's called will be a good option now, if you can afford to waste an Arsenal place...

While I am thinking of wildcarding, I have this nagging doubt that we may be over thinking things on here sometimes.

For instance, I will remove Torres and Adam because it is not clear where they will fit into the respective formations, whether they will indeed play midweek etc and my rival will leave both and they both play and score well.

Analysis paralysis on here sometimes, which is really making me seriosuly consider whether I really should WC tonight, or take the risk they both play and have "Darren Bent Debuts".

I should point out that sometimes my rival is oblivious and openly admits same to me, he won't have thought about a new formation, a new club etc, he has more of a life, the loser!

Johnny, all this deadline day action is making me itchy, but it's also giving me the inkling that maybe the thing to do is hold my nerve and keep my resolve to WC in GW27 by which time we'll have some idea whether Torres, Adam, Carroll, Suarez, Martins, Reid, etc are essential...

Or whether it's Lampard, Grandin, Amoeobi and Bentley who become must-have...

The GW28 blanks are annoying too.

my revamped WC team, please offer your thoughts. only 24 hours to nail this thing down. im done trying to have a dream GW27 team, but still have a lot of DGWers.

Szczesny/Myhill (both have had positive staements about their spot)

    Rafael/Coleman/R Johnson/Walker/Simpson

    Fabregas/Nani/VDV/A Young/Ferguson

    Berbatov/Tevez/RVP

i know the likes of ferguson/simpson and walker may not be attractive but they all have use over the next several weeks and it gives me to cash to really have a strong attack IMO.
