Scouting The Doubles

Scouting the Doubles – Liverpool

Back-to-back home clashes against West Brom and Swansea in the upcoming Gameweek have already earned Liverpool’s Fantasy assets significant investment. As mentioned in last night’s Digest, though, the following week’s blank also plays a part in our transfer policies prior to this Saturday’s deadline – load up on too many Liverpool and Swansea players and you’re left with a depleted squad for Gameweek 27, potentially facing points hits in order to field a starting XI. While Fantasy managers contemplate their tactics, we run the rule over the Reds:

The Prospects

Brendan Rodgers’ side prepare for the double Gameweek with the best home defensive record in the Premier League. Having conceded six goals in their first three games at Anfield, with City, Arsenal and United all notching twice, Liverpool have subsequently shipped just four goals in the following nine, with seven clean sheets accrued along the way. Their last six home games have harvested three or more goals on four occasions for the hosts – offering plenty potential at both ends of the pitch, then.

The Baggies arrive on Merseyside next Monday evening in dire away form – Steve Clarke’s side have lost five of their last six on the road and conceded two or more in all of those defeats. They have failed to score twice in that run, away to Arsenal and United and have notched once at Swansea and Everton – of the two fixtures, this certainly looks the most appetising in terms of goals for Liverpool.

Swansea look a tougher nut to crack. With just 10 goals conceded in 13 games on their travels, Michael Laudrup’s side are joint-top along with City for best away defence. The Swans have shipped just three goals in their last six away matches, producing three clean sheets, but have scored in only one of those six fixtures – suggesting that, while they may limit Liverpool’s attacking potential, they may struggle to break down the Reds’ rearguard.

The Likely Lads

Pepe Reina appears on the radar mainly due to the blank Gameweek 27. With the Spaniard on board, you could have five players for the double, subbing one out with your free transfer to leave the remaining four on the bench for Gameweek 27 – given there are doubts over Michel Vorm’s fitness for Swansea, Reina seems the safest keeper option, thus utilising all of your squad over the upcoming two Gameweeks.

Glen Johnson and Jose Enrique offer the best potential of points at both ends of the pitch. The full-backs have produced a goal and four assists apiece thus far, with Enrique slightly edging it by six bonus points to five. Having recently returned from a hamstring injury, Enrique made his first start since Gameweek 20 at City last weekend and although he was subbed off on 74 minutes, this was purely down to stamina issues as he continues to build up his match fitness. Having returned 4.2 points per game to Johnson’s 3.9 (albeit with a couple of appearances up front) Enrique’s kinder Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price tag of 5.7 to 6.4 could sway many.

After a couple of lacklustre campaigns, Steven Gerrard has returned to Fantasy form of old with a series of outstanding displays taking him to second in the FPL midfield standings. The Reds’ skipper has now scored or assisted in 10 of the last 12 Gameweeks; a clear sign of his consistency heading into the double. Gerrard has returned three goals, four assists and seven bonus points in his last four home matches and with spot-kick duties, in addition to a share of set-pieces and corners, an ownership of 10% is climbing steadily now.

Second top scoring FPL forward, Luis Suarez has also impressed in recent Anfield matches. The Uruguayan has produced four goals, an assist and eight bonus points over his last three home fixtures and is the most popular Liverpool player by some margin, with over 34% Fantasy managers already snapping him up. While Gerrard offers a viable armband alternative, a big Gameweek for Suarez could prove problematic for those who choose to overlook him, given his superior ownership. Despite a recent change in role, Suarez still seems to be delivering – he has scored in two of his three starts alongside Daniel Sturridge, either from the left in a 4-3-3 or in “the hole” in a 4-2-3-1.

The January move from Chelsea has had an immediate impact on Daniel Sturridge’s Fantasy potential. He’s scored or assisted in all four of his league appearances already, with goals against United and City highlighting his ability to deliver regardless of fixture. Sturridge’s appeal is also boosted by the fact he is cup-tied for Liverpool’s upcoming Europa League games against Zenit St Petersburg – the first leg, in Russia, comes three days after the West Brom game and three days before the Swansea fixture. Coming in at 7.6 in FPL to Suarez’s 10.7, he’s far more budget friendly, providing he shrugs off a thigh problem that has forced him out of England’s midweek friendly with Brazil.

Cheeky Punt

The last few matches have seen Jordan Henderson stake a claim for inclusion after a series of strong displays. The former Sunderland man has started five of the last six and has chipped in with a couple of goals, a pair of assists, four bonus points and two sets of double figures – for 5.3 in FPL, he’s proven decent value for money of late.

Stewart Downing has seemingly cemented a regular role under Rodgers over the past few months. While the likes of Raheem Sterling drift slightly out the picture, Downing has now started each of the last 10 and has produced attacking points in two of his last three home fixtures. Like Henderson, a modest price tag of 5.7 may appeal to those struggling to free up cash for big-hitters.

Keep Bale (might play center forward)--and already had 9 or 10 shots last game from the midfield which is definitely pimp status

      Do captain Suarez though

    Bench defender question:

    1) Fabio - 4.2
    2) Bertrand - 3.9
    3) Marriapa - 3.8

Already have ShawX, Demel, Davies, Harte.

Any other suggestions on how to build a decent defense when front 8 are all expensive?

Why have an expensive front 8 when you always have to bench one and the chances are you'll end up with big points on the bench. Buy at least one good defender

So, next week I have 4 non-playing players. Keeping Davies, not sure on Muchu at present, or which from Saurez and Studge... But with my two frees I could end up with this going forward.. Any good?

    Mata (Caz>Walcott) Michu Fellaini
    (Saurez>Aguero) RVP Sturridge

I will be loathe to sell Saurez he's served me well, but Studge allows upgrading from Tevez to Aguero? The benching business last week was the last straw, and the double the perfect time to say goodbye. But Silva could be better value for City cover? So maybe Silva in a 3-5-2 with Studge, and put some money into my cheap defence..

So the general consensus is that you'd be completely mad going into the DGW with only one Liverpool player but if it's Suarez(c) you have then you're only half crazy. Which is what I do have...so getting GJ/Enrique/Agger/Gerrard will make me that little bit less crazy.

Who do I get though? Gerrard would mean losing Bale/Walcott (undesirable)

A pool defender seems the way to go but the ceiling for points is much lower probably. 🙁

At the moment, i am going with Reina, Gerrard & Sturridge.

Reina - allows for a 5th DGW player without being left short in GW27. Liverpool are keeping cleansheets at home.

Gerrard - Form, corners, some free kicks, pens.

Sturridge - Playing as the striker, cup tied so he should play 180 minutes if he recovers from the thigh strain.

I think/hope having both Gerrard and Sturridge will mean i can get away with not having Suarez.

My guess is he wants to buy Sissoko after this gameweek, but won't be able to afford him if the price goes up. Therefore, he is desperately trying to throw people off the scent.

So I am having a bit of a dilemma here.

Basically, my subs are dreadful. Happy with R.Martin (NOR) but Demel and Marveux are pretty lousy so not confident at all about playing them next week.

I am still in the cup, and I do care about it, so I need to factor that in.
Used one of my free transfers to bring in Suarez, so I have 3 DGW'ers atm, Davies, Suarez and Sturridge.

If you were in my shoes, would you go all out for the next GW, Get in another Liverpool player - probably Bale --> Gerrard, or Zabaleta --> J.Enrique or just save the FT, have 2 FT next week which would ensure a strong lineup next week.

First time i've asked for advice for a while, but I really am stuck here! Any advice much appreciated.

Yep...go all out...Yours is the nightmare scenario i wrote about for cautious players only playing 3 dgwers....Play with Suarez/Sturridge/Gerrard and you shoulf be looking at at a 90-100 point week eith a bit of luck...then your hits the following week will seem like peanuts...

So what's this about Bale playing in a striker's role? Isn't Adebayor back now too? And Dempsey is still there? What are the odds that Bale is found in the position? I rate it pretty low at 25%

I don't think he will though. AVB has Holtby love. Plus Siggy and Dempsey add further doubt to a central midfield birth. He's still a beast on the left wing though

Like with Walcott I don't think Bale is better for FPL even if he's played more centrally or OOP or whatever. So I don't know the odds and don't think it matters.

6.5 = Zab/Clichy, Kyle Walker as a punt (50 in 9 games) Rafael or just keep Johnson

I have Ivanovic and Baines since start.
Is it wise to get one of them out for the rest of the season?
I have 2 FTs and one transfer is Fella -> Michu. Only with geting one of them out I can afford Liverpool (or Swansea) defender.
    Other options could be
    marveaux -> 4.9 or
Demel/Clyne -> 4.6 and I don't really want to do some of that as I wont play player i'd bring.

Im a United fan and dont agree with some on here that Evans is nailed on. I would like him to be, he proved last season he a great player and considering Rio is ageing and slow is by far the better option. I think Evra and Rafael are virtually nailed on and will only miss the odd game that Fergie deems an easy match and is very close to a CL tie. Vidic/Rio/Evans will probably rotate between each other, although with Vidic and Rio the obvious defensive partnership at Europe Id say Evans will play all the games close the CL matches.

    I'm in the fortunate position where I have 1FT+2FT which I will use after the saturday deadline. Thoughts on my transfers;
    Mignolet (3.9)
Evra | Zabaleta | Samba (Clyne | Harte)
Mata | Walcott | Bale* | Sissoko* (Puncheon)
    RVP | Aguero* | Sturridge

    *New acquistions

I'm not too keen on Aguero, I want double up on Rooney and RVP. But it means downgrading Evra to JEvans/Rafael for a -4 hit.

    Thoughts?
