The ScoutCast – Episode Ninety Seven – Dogging

Better late than never, our ninety seventh episode of the ScoutCast delivers another 45 minutes of mirth, plus injury time.

With the Professor otherwise engaged, it’s left to Jonty to provide backup to myself and Granville, arriving to deliver another “Fully Jonty” – the first to feature a community victim.

Doosra’s Fantasy fortunes come under the microscope, revealing a penchant for bandwagons and knee jerk transfers. Nevertheless, we try to go easy on the experienced campaigner, rounding things off with the extraordinary tale of the Doosra rescuing Jonty’s dog. True story.

That treat rounds off an episode that includes all the usual regulars, including our rinse through the forthcoming double Gameweek which Granville insists on placing within inverted commas: the weirdo.

Out of interest what is the most you can recall a PL player getting in one week?

Is it Defoe when he scored 5?

      pretty sure it's walcott.

      berba/defoe = 2pts + 5x4 + 3bps = 25
      walcott = 2pts + 3x5 + 2x3 + 3 = 26

In the spirit of Doos 'the Bandwagoner with a Jerky Knee'... and being completely objective, what do you think would be the major blunders you've made this year, that the Full Jonty would expose?

Mine's is probably selling Bale after 3 blanks, and some dodgy captain choices...

With Walcott (c) in THAT week being the highlight... 😀

Most definitely knee jerking into a WC and removing RVP, after the worst possible GW you could imagine.

I'm actually glad I played it in GW22 when I did, I don't think those that waited got any benefit from it, other than stocking up on Liverpool perhaps, but I've done that for 8pts total, so I think my good scores over the past 3-4 weeks have covered that...

I still heavily regret WCing in GW12, turned out to be a bad mistake... I should have just taken an 8pt hit to change it up... since most of the players I took out went on to score very well... Michu Lambert amongst other etc...

That decision has probably cost me the most points over the season...

Trying to think of a highlight...probably Santi's 23 pointer...it felt too good to be true, I watched it with a huge grin and reminded me why I love fantasy football.

In terms of good decisions, being patient with certain players sticks out to me. The fact I kept faith in Ba as a cheap alternative to Suarez, holding onto Mata when everyone was jumping ship because of rests. Particularly enjoyed punts on Lambert and Benteke paying off.

Low points, believing too much in Berbatov, the frustration of Baines, owning Giroud for the first 5 weeks! 😯

Ah Giroud, you poor bugger... You were only 20 weeks too early for that bandwagon...

You should be grateful you got rid of him when you did, cos if you held for WHM in GW7 and got 12 pts, you would have probably still have him... cos you'd keep him for sure, then suffer the 3 blanks, then he'd string you along with another haul in GW11-12... and so on...

Too true, that was the funny thing with Berb, I bought him for Arsenal away (I was just looking for a good third striker and he fit the bill, the penalty duties and his form convinced me)

So he scores 16 points and I'm over the moon. But it was a double-edged sword. This explosiveness led me to believe it'd surely be repeated in the next 3/4. Many many 2 pointers later and I'm sick of the sight of him! 🙂

Mine gotta be too impatience and transfers out player just right before their explosive weeks. And Fellaini.

Took Suarez in GW 7, got a two pointer and then sell him out right on GW8. He went on scoring 5 goals after that.

Took Santi out in GW 12. He got 13 points that week. And took in Fellaini, who got suspended after that. Although through that I ended up with Walcott in my team.

Took Ba out before his scoring runs. Got Tevez as a 1 week punt who didn't play that week and then went to Suarez who got one pointer and suspension after.

And the Wilson incident, of course 😀

This is only my first season. Was way too knee jerky in the beginning of season and was very hit-friendly.

and yeah I transferred out Bale to get Fellaini in earlier GW and missed his point hauls. Couple weeks later I reverse the transfer and then Bale's wife went into labour and Fellaini got 15 and 13 points.

Basically Fellaini is my jinx player. When I got him in for someone else, that someone else scored massive points and Fellaini got suspended or 1 pointer.
When I got Fellaini out, he scores.

        Damn,

          Beat this...

          I had Bale for 2, 2, 1 in the first 3 weeks...

          Sold him for 11, 8, 16...

          Got him back for 3, 0, 10 (What's that, an actual haul?), 2, 2...

Then stupidly sold him on my WC for 7, 9, 10...

Got him back in GW15 after having learned my lesson... he will NEVER leave my team again*... 😀

*He did leave temporarily in GW21, but only cos he was injured and I was WCing the next anyway...

            Well to compare

I never had him on his early season hauls. 10, 8, 12 points.

The first time I took him in for Bale who got 16 points (GW 6) he got 2,1 and then suspended.
            GW 8 I sold him he got 5, 15, 13 after suspension

Took out Santi (13 pt) to get Fellaini in GW 12. Got 4 points and then suspended.
Took him out. He got 10, 9 after suspension

Took him in again on GW 16. He got 2 points and then suspended right after.

I did had him just some time ago for his 5,6,5 but I took him out for my WC and he got 15 points last week. 😛

            I think I win? 😀

and yeah Bale is just that type of guy you don't want to 'gamble' not having him because of fixtures.

He can explode any time he wants.

            Basically just like Fellaini.

But after I posted that I just realized, Fellaini has his massive hauls ALWAYS after his suspensions.

I don't meant to be crass but I did find it interesting that Doosra's reputation wasn't really reflected in his decisions this year. He actually comes across as the exact opposite of a 'differential' kind of guy. Fair?

That is certainly the impression I got looking at his transfers...

There is no denying that he has been jumping on all the latest bandwagons, as supposed to selecting differential picks...

Not having michu and Felli at certain times hurt. Though I think I sold michu at the right time twice but didn't get him back in time. Got in too early on some differentials like lukaku and ramirez but got more right like Walcott and benteke. Overall I've had minimal mistakes this year imho. Some better early captain choices and I'd be right up there

      1) Benching Michu vs. Arsenal
      2) Selling Santi and Tevez for Suarez and Theo (one week earlier)
Tevez got his 19 pt hual just after. (Suarez did score a brace though)
      3) Benching Rafa vs. City
      4) Not getting the big hitting midfielder right for the first 10 GW's

      1st hurts the most.

It might work out ok. Seems that people categorise whether a mistake as something which dosent work out , but not that really correct
Do lots of sharetrading and its easy to fall into that trap , of seeing the mistakes as the trades that lose money , can lead to bad habits

For example , after the Michu game people start saying "never bench Michu" even though it was probably the correct move

Yeah I did a fair analysis on RVP vs Rooney back then. Starting an anti-RVP bandwagon rolling 😀

Nah, but seriously I decided to go without RVP this week (instead of Aguero) is because not having him now gave me flexibility my next week transfers..

This week is gonna be a crucial week as next week transfer's gonna determine how I play my team the rest of the season basically.

If RVP performs, I'll get him back, if not I get Rooney and upgrade elsewhere.
If Michu performs, I MAY consider keeping him, if not I'll take a punt on Ben Arfa or Lampard.
If Sturridge outperforms Suarez, he stays and I abandon Suarez.

Looking back on this season, these are definitely KEY points ill be making sure of:

    1) 1st WC: Either GW3 INT Break(for TV) or Keep for later DGW
    2) Lay off hits unless 100% necessary (i.e. unable to field 11)
    3) Stack up on big teams for DGWs (Max coverage if possible -- my 2 scores this year: 101+97 with recent DGWs)
    4) Do transfers as late as possible, don't fall for crap bandwagons (i.e. O'Brien)
    5) Start with two 4.5 GKs, always prove the best value up until Jan. WC

All good except 2) IMO. Early in the season accruing TV is important. Dropping fallers for risers is often worth a 4pt hit. Players with TV of less than 103m now are struggling whilst the rest of us are juggling 🙂

      1. There's no ideal to play your wc. It depends on the quality of your team.
      2. + billions. There's a time and a place for hits.
      3. That may be coincidental. Depends on form and fixtures.
      4. Avoid b-wags altogether. Get the player that is right for you.

      I disagree about #2

some of the hits i have taken this year have been my best transfers

Exhibit C doesnt count, DGW hits are ok.

But those are just 2 examples that turned out well. I'm sure others take hits for granted and don't realize how much it penalizes their rank.

      1) rather than the time of it its more to do with the balance of ur team and a plan honestly....tbh dere ain't a drastic change in TV during gw 3 intl break i have tried it in past yrs...

      2) absolutely...but some have proved this wrong this year....maybe take a hit if ur gut absolutely affirms to someone doing big dat gw..

      3) NEVER underestimate a DGW so true.....even a James Mcclean gives u a nice captain 😆

      4) Hey if u kept him long enough atleast u got to profit from his price rise so cheer up...i'd suggest bring the player in 1 week before u think u shud usually pays off 😛

Nice post, I too am taking notes for next season. I've not played fantasy in 2 years and then it was on Sky.

Like Doos and yourself, my biggest weakness is indeed taking hits. Far too many, it's embarrassing. But also exhilarating! 🙂

The WC is interesting, there are several times you can justify using it. Next year, I hope to hold out as long as possible. Though the early season missteps, you begin to panic, your mates begin calling you names!

My early season was spotty (no RVP, late on Michu, Fellaini and inconsistent, bad luck with Mata/Hazard, Theo/Santi). I do think easy and steady is the way to begin. There's just no way other safe way to do it. Go with some proven Fantasy performers and hang on until GW 7-10 I suppose. 5-6 GW's can provide some decent sample data.

In addition, early in the season I fell into choosing players from a "top club". It's a tough trap to fall in to with rotation and when European/Int'l matches come calling. Thus leading to mid-lower table players. Most are streaky and you must know when to buy and sell. The turnaround can be just a few weeks (Nolan, Fletch, Holt, Crouch, Berbs...to a lesser degree Punch, Taarabt, etc.).

Would solve a problem for me making it an easy decision to transfer for Michu or Gerrard for a hit. Bale gives 110% in internationals so there is always a risk of a poor GW for him after them

gunna make a doubles classic league starting gw 31. look for an announcment on the council site with all the details around gw 28-29ish.

talk of it being a national thing (pair up with someone from your country) but most likely that's not the case

Well Shane Warne has gone out and said that Fleming should be the next Auzzie coach a she believed he was the best cap'n he ever played against.

Good batting average and generally got the best out a very average test team. Did very well in One Dayers.

On the whole, he was a very astute cap'n.

Thank God you think so. A couple thought he was overrated. He was my favorite international captain for a long time. Big fan. Love Clarke as a captain now.

The best I've ever seen. He doesn't kneejerk field placings as a result of the previous shot like many foolish captains. He was right into his stats and applied a field and bowler to very specific and sometimes unique fielding formations for certain batsman. He always had a plan.

Advice appreciated on my Cup draw - its on a knife edge.

My opponent doesn't take hits and I assume did Ba to Suarez this week.
Leaving out benchers and players in common, the game is down to...

    Me.....................Him
    Bego/Fed........Mig/Szczesny
    Rafael..............Cashley
    O'Brien............Cameron
    Bale.................Michu
    Sturridge........Lambert

I guess he'll cap Suarez, but maybe Michu.
To win this thing, should I?

    A) Bale to Michu -4pts
    B) Bale to Gerrard -4pts
    C) Bego to Reina -4pts
    D) Relax and enjoy the ride

    TIA

Nah, I jest...but I have a strong connection. My godparents are from Chicago/Kansas. My parents became great friends with them in the 80s when I was born and I've gone over to visit many times..and they love coming over here. My dad also went to college in NY. So a lot of little connections like that. Very fond of all the American people I know 🙂

Don't worry SJ announcements will be made. Just something we thought of yesterday. A doubles league. GW31-38. I look at as a sprint/drag race(classic league) with one nitro boost(WC). All of us were thinking of themes, Acqua thought nationalities would be a great theme(WC and all that) but my only issue is people might not be able to find posters from the same country. Its going to be easy for the Aussies, Kiwis, Indians, Americans and the English. Rest, i don't know.

plus i just feel like playing england 15 then the next week england 12 then india 3 then england 8 then india 5 would just seem a bit boring... not like the real wc where there's only 1 team per nation

Shut up. I really don't mind anyone at all. Just someone whose up for risk taking. And don't make such comments Paulie. It might lead to others believing i am a smug basterd when i really am not.

This Initiative incident has brought back a memory of my funniest ever moment/ week on FFS.

    JackOffAttack vs. Rukawa (JackOnAttack)

😆 Anyone here around back then?

Nope. I never really bookmark anything. I should start though..

In short, Rukawa (Hanamichi now) basically had this whole feud with JOA, and changed his/her name to JackOnAttack, before being forced by Mark to change it back..

Jack Off/On Attack was also involved in that dual poster incident uncovered by Inspector Nigel. The best detective work ever seen on here to uncover JOA's scandalous scam.

Yes that was crazy. I was new then and it was like Lance Armstrong before our eyes. All the things JOA claimed were wrong like being a 26 year old PE teacher when he was only a teenager.

The Suarez vs. Sturridge (c) is going to be one of the hardest decisions for a while.

Hopefully their scores average out to the same over the 2 games!

I'm still leaning towards Suarez and its not a close for me either. He's the better player and thats where it ends for me.
