A first win in six, a first clean sheet in eight – West Brom turned up at Anfield and failed to read the double Gameweek script. Steven Gerrard’s missed spot-kick compounded an evening of the unexpected, as Ben Foster’s inspired performance frustrated Liverpool and Fantasy managers alike. Here’s the Stock Check on Monday’s events…

On the Up

Ben Foster
A simply outstanding display by the Baggies stopper, capped by a stunning save from Steven Gerrard’s spot-kick. This was a first clean sheet in eight for Foster, a first away from home. With fixtures brightening for Steve Clarke’s side, we may yet see Foster build on tonight’s performance and start to attract Fantasy interest.

Gareth McAuley
The opening goal from McAuley, his second strike of the season, underlined his credentials as the luxury item in the West Brom defence – a proposition that has tempted few given their poor record of late. Like Foster, however, tonight’s returns may well earn him attention, particularly with the schedule presenting further opportunities for shut-outs in the coming weeks.

Romelu Lukaku
The big Belgian started the game on the bench as Steve Clarke bolstered his midfield with the return of Youssouff Mulumbu. Shane Long kept his start, then, but was overshadowed by the cameo role played by Lukaku late on. An early warning saw the Chelsea loanee threaten the goal, breaking from inside his own half, only for him to seal the victory with a superb first touch and calm finish just minutes later.

Going Down

Steven Gerrard
It’s harsh on Gerrard given Foster’s outstanding save, both from his second half effort and his penalty. Having said that, such is the competition for places in our midfields, failure to register points at home to Swansea on Sunday will surely see Gerrard suffer significant sales ahead of the Gameweek 27 blank, as the clamour for Gareth Bale, Theo Walcott and Juan Mata continues to build .

Luis Suarez
Brendan Rodgers decided against risking Daniel Sturridge, assuring us that “he should be okay” for Sunday’s meeting with Swansea. Suarez shifted back to a central attacking role, then, only to put on one of his least effective performances in memory. While Suarez won a rather dubious spot-kick, he contributed little else as the West Brom defence coped admirably with his movement and close control; an eighth booking of the season only compounded the frustration for Suarez’s owners.

The Liverpool Defence
They had look such a strong proposition ahead of home clashes with West Brom and Swansea and yet, following tonight’s setback, Brendan Rodgers’ back four have now conceded six goals in their last three. With a confident Swansea at Anfield on Sunday, suddenly our expectation of returns from the likes of Glen Johnson have taken a dent.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Got to say, that run at the Liverpool defence really took me by surprise. His pace running with the ball was incredible - while Drogba had pace in the stride, Lukaku kept the ball close, ran at speed and had Agger all over the shop. Potential.

Some of his runs at the Spurs defence were the same - only saved by very proactive keeping from Lloris. Getting him this week I think.

Because when he comes on late in games he can do that...

Fuller was the same for us, as is Jerome at the moment. They're only at their best when the game is more open and they have space to run into. When defences are tiring, they can exploit it in an instant. Jerome is terrible when put on from the start.

Stoke were looking at him as soon as he went to Chelsea but couldn't get him because of the two team in a single transfer window rule.

We always seem to be close to signing these top forwards but don't quite pull them off. Then other teams go and get them and they're a success.

I'm thinking Remy (too early to tell, I know), Ba and Lukaku, amongst others.

Same to be honest. I'm one of those people that wants English teams to get battered in Europe. I don't know why, I just get fed up of commentators continuously saying it's the best league in the world, when it really isn't. That was epitomized tonight by two top 10 teams.

Rooney will never shine on the world stage, not good enough and will always be in the shadow of much better players.

Equivalent position this fixture was like Real Sociedad vs. Valladolid - whens the last time you watched that fixture to compare? All well and good judging the spanish league on the 18 El Classico's per year and the occasional Atheltico Madrid fixture.

When did I mention La Liga? All I'm saying was that the fixture tonight and the football on show was average at best, and that's being kind.

It may or may not be better overall than La Liga, I don't know, but the technical ability is lacking that's for sure. I don't think this league is anywhere near as good as people say it is, despite the money ploughed into it.

Oh dear, that didn't go to plan did it?

It was only fitting for Suarez to get booked in the final minute of the match to sum up the ultimate troll of a game for those of us banking on Liverpool players (the vast majority, then) to deliver.

How many points did Gerrard get in the end? I didn't have him so I'm actually coming out of this thinking 3 points isn't too bad. Laughable I know.

Still, they've still only played half of their games, and they'll have a rocket up their arses for the next one. I really can't see them beating Swansea either to be honest, they know how to pass the ball better and they attack with purpose and intent. There was none of that from Liverpool tonight, it really was crab football. Sideways passing for passing's sake.

Right, I think I figured out what to do re: transfers.

Atm I have 4 DGW’ers. (Suarez, Sturridge, Davies, Michu)

I plan on doing Suarez + Puncheon Rodriguez + Bale and revert to a 3-5-2 formation for the foreseeable future.

It would leave me with this for the next GW:
    Fed

    Demel – Turner – Zabaleta – Cameron

    Bale – Mata – Fellaini – Walcott(c)

    RVP – Rodriguez

    Thoughts?

Can field 11 next week, albeit not an amazing 11 and at the cost of 4 points.

Good to go? 0.7m in the bank, TV 110.6m.

    Begovic (Cerny)

Harte - Demel - Onuoha (Davies, Johnson)

Bale (c) - Walcott (vc) - Mata - Fellaini (Michu)

    Lambert - RVP - Aguero

Man Utd is the only team you can trust to deliver nowadays, so I'm getting Rooney and Robin into my team. They even take the corners, freekicks and penalties.

How long ago does Bale's double feel now?
I felt like a Red Arrow at 2:20pm on Saturday.

Firstly, devastating as a Liverpool fan. Decent results at Arsenal and City mean nothing now. Unfortunately, this seems to happen with all too much regularity.

And as a fantasy manager, here goes..

Scoring 3, 4 and 5 in recent home league games and scoring a couple in big away games meant you couldn’t ignore the Liverpool attack in a DGW. Two if not three could be seen as good planning. Combine that with West Brom only keeping one clean sheet in just under 30 away games it was just plain logical. It wasn’t a penalty in the first place but this game we love and play is so majorly about luck you dust yourself down and move on.

We only have to look at Mark and Granville to see how luck pans out. Mark would have been watching tonights game through his fingers as he didn’t have either of Liverpool’s big two and gets beyond lucky. You need these breaks to be up right up there. Granny captains the penalty taker and gets sweet Fanny Adam (like myself). You just have to hope Lady Luck evens itself out.. Even if it is next season! You got to take the rough with the smooth so all of you guys cursing your luck, sh*t happens!! We've all been there, not exactly going to stop nerds like us playing is it 🙂

One game of the DGW to go yet too, so damage limitation isn’t beyond the realms (enter a Gerrard red and Ben Davies hatrick here).

you could be all grown up about it. or, like me you could throw a hissy fit and stomp around the house waking everyone up - neather option will gain me any points though.
oh and please tell your manager he is a. tw@t

anybody transferring out suarez would be doing the same kind of mistake that peope did when they transferred RVP out this week. keep calm and hold onto suarez if you don't have any pressing concerns.

Suarez has to go... I got him 3 times this season, and all 3 times he has delivered me 1 point. Better options out there for the coming gameweeks. Other reasons to tae suraez off:
Liverpool is doing crap and strudige as CF... so no point keeping Suarez...
