Everton are set for a Fifth Round FA Cup replay with Oldham later this month after a 2-2 draw at Boundary Park. Victor Anichebe continues his strong recent form, while Phil Jagielka is also amongst the goals for the Merseysiders. A much-changed Arsenal taste defeat at the hands of Blackburn after the Gunners spurn chances aplenty at the Emirates, while Robin Van Persie stresses his desire to play every game for United…

Arsenal 0 Blackburn 1
Arsene Wenger made seven changes from the side that squared up to Sunderland last weekend. In defence, the Gunners boss changed three of the back-four from the Black Cats match. Laurent Koscielny and Thomas Vermaelen recovered from calf and ankle injuries respectively, while Francis Coquelin was fielded at right-back – Carl Jenkinson served a one-match suspension and Bacary Sagna remained on the bench, while Per Mertesacker was given the day off. Abou Diaby replaced Aaron Ramsey in central midfield, while Tomas Rosicky, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Gervinho were given starting roles, with Jack Wilshere, Theo Walcott and Santi Cazorla dropping out – Lukas Podolski was once again named amongst the subs. Wenger sent on Walcott, Cazorla and Wilshere with 20 minutes remaining but the Gunners spurned chance after chance to crash out and will have to pick themselves up before in-form Bayern roll up to the Emirates on Tuesday evening.

Oldham 2 Everton 2
David Moyes made two changes from last Sunday’s defeat at United. Sylvain Distin replaced Johnny Heitinga in central defence, while Nikica Jelavic came in for Kevin Mirallas – the Croatian’s return to the lone forward role saw Anichebe partner him up front, with Marouane Fellaini significantly shifted back to a deeper midfield role for the first half at least. Jelavic supplied the opener for Anichebe before the Nigerian (who has produced three goals and four assists in his last nine Gameweeks) made way for Mirallas after the break with a knock. Details of that injury are sketchy right now but, presumably, Anichebe is an early doubt for the Gameweek 27 trip to Norwich. With Mirallas deployed wide right for the second period, Fellaini shifted back up front to partner Jelavic. It was Mirallas who provided the assist for Phil Jagielka’s goal courtesy of a corner. Moyes also handed Bryan Oviedo a chance to impress with 11 minutes left – the Costa Rican replaced Steven Pienaar on the left, while Jelavic was subbed off for Shane Duffy minutes before the end.

The draw means we are still uncertain as to whether Arsenal’s Gameweek 29 home clash with Everton will go ahead as originally planned. If either team had won yesterday, then the game would have been due for a reschedule as the next round of the FA Cup falls on the Gameweek 29 weekend – the only certainty is that the game cannot be rescheduled for the midweek prior to Gameweek 30, as Arsenal travel to Bayern Munich on Champions League duties on March 13. It’s still up in the air, then, with the Toffees’ replay against Oldham now set to take place for Wednesday February 27, as confirmed by their official twitter feed immediately after the match. A win for Oldham at Goodison, of course, would wipe away any need for the game to be moved to another date.

In Other News
West Ham could be set to welcome back James Collins in time for next weekend’s home clash with Tottenham. The centre-half has missed the previous five Gameweeks after sustaining a hamstring injury against Sunderland early last month but, in an interview with the club’s official website, confirmed he is on course for a return:

“I feel good; I am raring to go and can’t wait to get back into training with the rest of the lads. It is looking like I can do this next week, in the lead up to the Tottenham game, and see how I go. It has been frustrating and a pain, being out injured, but sometimes you have to hold your hands up and say it is an injury and get on with it. During the match [Sunderland] I felt good and my body was fine, but I then over-stretched, which can happen, and I have just been working hard to get back ever since.”

While the Hammers were less than impressive in Collins’ absence, with a single clean sheet in five, it’s fair to say they’ve struggled defensively over the past few months now. Sam Allardyce’s troops have kept out their opponents just twice from Gameweek 12 onwards but with George McCartney still sidelined due to a knee problem and Joey O’Brien limping off in last Sunday’s loss at Villa with a leg injury, Collins’ return looks vital, given his side’s upcoming schedule. After the Spurs clash, the Hammers travel to Stoke before squaring up to United and Chelsea – currently just seven points from safety, they could well be dragged into a scrap for survival if they fail to prosper over those fixtures.

Finally, Robin Van Persie has pleaded with Sir Alex Ferguson to allow him to play in Monday night’s FA Cup tie with Reading, stressing that he has a desire to play every game for the Red Devils. The United boss is widely expected to rotate his troops for the Reading tie, preserving energies for the Premier League campaign and the second leg Champions League tie with Real Madrid. Van Persie’s statement in reports today will be met with mixed news by his Fantasy owners – while the desire to play every game will be welcomed, the thought of Van Persie being risked in Monday’s tie will provide some concern. Here’s what the Dutchman had to say…

“I have found out that when you play for Manchester United, every game is a big game… There are some extra-special matches – like when you play City or Liverpool in the Premier League and Real Madrid in the Champions League – but the so-called smaller games are important also because winning those games makes you champions. I want to play against Reading. I want to keep going, playing all of the games. You get into a rhythm. I get used to having a game every three days and when you don’t play for a week, it can take maybe 10 or 15 minutes to get your rhythm back. Personally, I love to play all of the games.”

Wenger on the reaction to the defeat…
I leave all the headlines and the definite thinking to you. Football is much more unpredictable than that and I believe that 16 years without losing against a lower-league team, no one has done it so that means now up until now the record has been quite good. It is very disappointing that the two [defeats] have happened in the same season but I prepared these two in the same way that did in the 16 years before. If you lose a game people will be very unhappy, I am as well don't worry.
    ______________________________________________________________

Arsene, it is no coincidence that you have now started to lose against teams from lower leagues, in the same season that you have the lowest points tally at this stage of the season, a very strong chance that you will not qualify for the CL next year & your best players continue to leave the club because you refuse to re-invest the transfer profits.

I would really like to have a 10 minute conversation with that man.

And Wenger himself has said that he is in full control of the transfers.

It's so frustrating when he says that.

If I was a reporter, I would ask him about Michu, Ba...

Id also ask him if selling RVP, Fab, Nasri, Song, Clichy... was because they didnt have enough quality for the team.

I believe the funds are available, but Wenger is reluctant to spend them for ego reasons.

He wants to be seen as the great manager that wins the league by buying cheap players, not the manager that spent money on decent players & that is why they win the league.

            It's all about Arsene.

I think he'll bounce back into the line up. The only thing I have against him though is you can get CS+goal threat for 5.6 in Evans, and CS from Wilson at 3.9, and the other spot is taken by Zabaleta (got him at 5.9 i think)

In all honesty I actually thought Chamakh deserved a bit more game time for them. He had a decent first season considering he was second fiddle to RVP and maybe if Wenger had been as resolved to make Chamakh a good player as he is with Giroud then he may have had a few options for the striker position this season, had a bit more depth.

Problem with Arsenal is they constantly get the tactics wrong. Giroud is a big guy who can head the ball as well as anyone, so when he plays they pass the ball to his feet. When he isnt on the pitch and Walcott is up front they whip in crosses that he cant reach. I cant believe a manager as experienced as Wenger can be telling the team to play like that

I agree completely! Watched Chamakh for a long time in France, he's similar to Giroud. Tall guy known for aerial ability. So they sign him and play the passing game up front. Terrible stuff.

So, one day in the not so distant future a meteorite crashes into Earth and the virulent space-plague it carries wipes out the whole human race in about 47 minutes. Six billion or so people suddenly find themselves standing on a grey, featureless plain, in front of a pair of large pearl-coloured gates. After a few minutes the gates open and the Archangel Gabriel comes out carrying a megaphone and a pair of stepladders. He puts the ladders up, climbs to the top, fixes the crowd with a baleful glare and bellows into the megaphone, "Right. I've been instructed by the Lord to sort you people out so listen closely, because this is what we're going to do. First, I want all the women and children over there on that side. Move now please". The women and children walk away in the direction he's pointing, leaving the men in front of the gates.
"Now then, you men. I want you in three lines. All the men who dominated the women in their lives on the right, all the men who were dominated by their women on the left, and all those who lived in peace and harmony with women in the middle." He has to repeat the instructions a few times until they understand but after a lot of shuffling and shifting the lines are drawn. On the right is a long line stetching to the horizon. On the left is another line stretching out of sight. In the middle is one lone man, kneading his hat and looking around nervously. "Only one?" Gabriel bellows."I don't think the good Lord is going to be very happy that only one man in all of Creation managed to live in harmony with the women in his life. Not happy at all. You fellow, what have you got to say for yourself? Speak up".
"Dunno mate," the man says, "My wife told me to stand here".

In the last 3 PL games between SWA and LIV there's been 1 goal and that was for SWA. However, Liverpool starts with Sturridge and Coutinho - it's a different team. There will be goals, not a lot, though. I say 1-1. Coutinho and Michu....coutinho cause new class players "always" start with a bang.

    Ronh -

Wenger's a puppet of the board. They make him take all the flak for their greed and disinterest in the football club improving. I think although Wenger is frustrated with not being able to spend, he's settled down and is comfortable. I think he now finds solace in seeing 4th place as a challenge LOL (he compared it to a trophy at one point in the last 12 months I think). But it frustrates me to see Arsenal hog top 4 when the club have no ambition. I despise the club for it. Chelsea and City get all the hate, but I think Arsenal should get just as much (if not more).

I'd love to see Spurs back in the Champions League, also would be great for Everton as 4th spot will secure their big players hopefully (Fellaini for instance). Whereas it's wasted on Arsenal, their best players don't see champions league involvement as a prize and leave for trophies (they care about progression, the club doesn't).

Not true, they stand in the way of any up and coming club (up and coming in the sense they might contend for a champions league spot) that has a real ambition to succeed e.g Spurs, Newcastle (last season), Everton etc.

I see what you're saying, but imagine if Spurs were in the champions league for the last 3 years (at the expense of Chelsea). I'm sure Arsenal would drop out the top 4 before Spurs since they'd use the money they get from the tournament.

I remember reading this at the time, it is difficult to establish if he was using that as propaganda to get a higher ownership of the club, when the fans emotions were running high.

I think Wenger came out after this & said that he was in charge of the transfers though.

I think Arsene let RVP go, because he felt it was great business for a 29 yr old that had a terrible injury history.

To be fair RVP was done, he really did want to go and Arsene knew he couldn't just let the guy walk out in 6 months for free.

Surely Wenger has to say that though, he can't just blame the board. I think the liability lies with both the manager and the board.

But Wenger only gets 10-25% of the blame from me, it's the board I really despise. Arsene has done brilliantly with the amount he has spent during his time.

And I'm gonna be hi iiigh as a kite by then
I miss the earth so much I miss my wife
        It's lonely out in space
        On such a timeless flight

And I think it's gonna be a long long time
Till touch down brings me round again to find
I'm not the man they think I am at home
Oh no no no I'm a rocket man

    From La Liga-
Nikos Karabelas has been sent off for Levante
This is now the EIGHTH consecutive game that Real Sociedad have played against 10.
    😯
    Must be a record?

That is a pretty incredible record!

Late check on Henderson, if he's 100%, he starts, if not, Downing comes in for him.
