As revealed last night, we’ve struck a deal with the guys over at TotelFootball which will take in the remainder of this season’s Champions League. With the next round of matches comprising the four fixtures over this Tuesday and Wednesday, we take a look at the options on offer for our squads ahead of this evening’s deadline.

As per the rules of the competition, our team must be lined up in a 4-4-2 formation, with a further four warming the bench in a 15 man squad. You can pick up to two players per team, though if you exceed this allocation, you will be deducted five points per player over that quota.

With only eight teams to choose from, striking a balance is tricky. If you choose to go without points hits, you’ll need two players from seven teams and one player from the remaining club. The deadline is 7.45pm, though, meaning we can tinker with our picks for tonight’s two games after the official squad lists are rolled out – a real advantage for those favouring the hands-on approach.

Last 16: Week 2 Selections

Looking at the results from week 1’s matches, it’s intriguing to see that not one of the four hosts either clinched victory or returned a clean sheet. Indeed, only one club managed to keep out their opponents, as Juventus racked up a 3-0 triumph at Celtic Park.

Arsenal’s home clash with Bayern looks likely to afford us goals. While much has been made of the visitors’ phenomenal away record in the Bundesliga (10 wins and a draw from 11 games, 27 goals for, with one against) they did, however, clinch victory in just one of their away matches in the group stages and were beaten 3-1 on the road by Bate Borisov. Theo Walcott’s domestic form makes him impossible to ignore, while Franck Ribery also gets the nod in midfield. We’re doubling up on the visitors, though, and opting for Philipp Lahm’s threat from the back for tonight’s encounter.

Porto’s home record in the group stages affords us a little more confidence. They won all three games in front of their own fans, though visitors Malaga avoided defeat in all of their away matches, with a win and two draws. Porto full-back Danilo has played the last five and provided an assist in their final group match with PSG, while Lucho Gonzalez has chipped in with two goals and a pair of assists from midfield. Isco gets the nod for the visitors – he’s also bagged a couple of goals and two assists and is our preferred Malaga midfield option with Eliseu out injured.

Milan’s home clash with Barcelona is trickier to call. The hosts have won each of their last six at the San Siro in Serie A, while Barca have wobbled a little in the league on their travels, with just one away win in three. Nevertheless, we’re handing Jordi Alba a place at left-back and giving Lionel Messi one of our two forward slots for this one. Milan’s raiding right-back Mattia De Sciglio gets the nod, with the hope he can offset any possible goals conceded with an assist or two.

Galatasaray will be buoyed by the signings of Didier Drogba and Wesley Sneijder ahead of their home clash with Schalke. Drogba grabbed a goal and assist on his debut the other day and while Schalke impressed on the road in the group stages, they have picked up two points from their last six away games in the Bundesliga – affording the hosts plenty optimism here. Fernando Muslera is our keeper of choice, while Burak Yilmaz’s six goals in the group stages are enough to earn our vote.

With Evra, you can sign him and forget about him. Very little risk of rotation right now (until the title is won). However, that 1.7 can surely be used elsewhere in your team so the answer to your question is really down to how you propose to use that case.

Give us a player X + Evra or player Y + Evans scenario perhaps?

I posted this earlier and got about one response. here's hoping for more!

    FFS team,
Just an idea I had to keep the community involved in the site.

Following the success of some new additions to the podcast (such as Doosra’s inclusion) I wondered if it might be possible to have the odd ‘poster’s post’. A guest writer would write a piece(maybe on their season, their team- whatever!, a set subject basically) and so keep us all on our toes. Lateriser’s post on ‘the best moment of my fpl season’ gave me the idea and I think (and hope)this idea would be popular.

Just an idea- no idea if its even possible- thoughts appreciated!

    Thanks

    E.S.S.

Hey. Well one of the main ideas behind the rep system is for that to surface some new contributors and some existing members of the community who are consistently posting good stuff and therefore deserve the opportunity to have a say via articles. A community post section was working on test and planned for Xmas but I had to shelve it to switch focus to comments. I will resurrect it.

Having said that, high rep users will be given the ability to sticky their own comments - giving them more prominence within a thread and placing them in a sidebar widget - they kind of become "Topics of the Day" - almost forum posts. In this way, those contributing quality stuff as comments can get their contributions found and discussed far more easily and hopefully get some recognition.

It will also condense comments into neatly defined threads and hopefully help to alleviate the free for all nature of the site.

Not massively. It's just stickied comments will have headlines e.g.: "Suarez or Sturridge?" and that comment will be linked via the headline in a list of the day's sticky comments in the sidbear. So, throughout the day, we build a list of the best comments made that have led to the best discussions. It means you can turn up at this time in the day and immediately just click on the top discussions that have gone on. You don't need to scour the threads.

Hi Mark. I like the sound of all of this- and I'm sure the new comment system will be eagerly anticipated. I like the whole rep principle as well, and hopefully it will result in less RMTs etc( although I am a contributor myself to those!) Sounds like you have my idea covered yourselves ( to a degree), so thanks for all the work your putting into the new system, I hope its here soon! And thanks for your work on FFS itself. 🙂

Won't this lead to some 'high rep' users abusing the system and inflating their egos by continuously stickying their posts? Shouldn't the community decide what is worthy of a sticky?

Well it's the community that make them high-rep users ;-). We're only going to give that ability to trusted souls and also, we will probably get a mod to approve any proposed sticky submission.

If there's one advantage to the mess that is GW29 it is that a lot of more casual players will have even less of an idea what is going on. So you might catch up on a few that end up fielding 4 players with Demel vice captain.

              😀

But if I did it'd be a tactical move to take advantage of a rest. I also only bought RVP at 13.5 so it's not the same as those who bought for 13m maybe. I can understand the regret when he's scored 12 points. And that's the risk but I think those who sold RVP this week were doing it for the DGW advantage and hoping he stayed quiet. If you correctly predict he'll be rested because of CL it could be different as he may not bite you in the ass. It's just an idea anyway at the moment.

              I know I've captained RVP a lot but I ain't alone! 😀

Predictions of rest were completely confounded for the Everton game. RVP played the full 90 if I recall correctly, how is that easy to predict? The argument that obviously Fergie would play a full strength squad the same 3 days before the Real match smells of captain hindsight big time.

Instead of trying to predict the first choice team which you might have half a chance with, it's Russian roulette with the big guns.

But the predicted rest for RVP against Everton was generally scaremongering. They weren't strong enough for me to ever consider selling him. I was certain he'd play enough minutes in that match.

But this Norwich game is different, they have that 12 point gap and I think everyone will genuinely be concerned he won't start against an easy enough opposition. The selling of RVP this week was more to do with the DGW than anything. Otherwise no-one would have sold imo. But this is different in that there aren't players you would gladly bring in for him who has 2 games over RVP's one game.

Emd of the day, if I recall correctly, Norwich are the only side United failed to score against in the league this year and the only one they lost to. Who knows what team SAF will put out. But I don't see any reason for the famously unpredictable one to suddenly become an open book.

Arsenal are 3/1 to win tonight :0

And 5/6 to win or draw. Bayern have been pretty indifferent in the Champions League, particularly away from home.

'Mon the Arsenal tonight. Praying it'll be one of those eye opening moments when the team discovers what it can do. Think Arsenal 2 Barcelona 1. One of the annoying things about the season is that we only play when we're losing, we're too nervous before that.

Look above.... 3/1 on Arsenal to win tonight Isacki, back your hunch!

That just seems crazy value for a home win.

Thinking about a double: Arsenal win/draw and Galatasary win. Gives you odds of about 4/1.

    Right, I've sussed it. 🙂

Sturridge > Dzeko this week, save a transfer. 11 out 4-4-2.

Cazorla > Bale or Walcott next week, save a transfer.

Two transfers GW29, for fixes. And this team going forward:

    Bale/Walcott Mata Fellaini Michu
    Saurez RVP Dzeko

One of Arsenal or Spurs cover missing, but you can't have it all. And I think Arsenal could be on a downward spiral if Bayern do a number on them, so expect to have Bale over Walcott. I can always trade Saurez>Aguero or Dzeko>Studge if bans/postponements etc arise.

I'm going on Tevez playing in the cup, meaning Dzeko in all probability should get the start vs Chelsea. He'll get gametime nonetheless, which Sturridge obviously won't. And keeps all my money in to get Bale after Arsenal-Villa.

Don't base your transfers on your rival's team. Not a good thing to do.
