A second-half revival at Anfield finds Liverpool turning the tables on Tottenham, who lose their grip on a thrilling encounter, despite two Jan Vertonghen strikes. Both Luis Suarez and Gareth Bale fetch returns again, while in the North East, Newcastle leave it late but grab the points from Stoke via a Papiss Cisse goal. Here’s the Stock Check on Sunday’s action…

On the Up

Luis Suarez
With Daniel Sturridge back in the lineup, we wondered if the Uruguayan’s contribution would be reduced somewhat – today’s goal and assist indicates that Suarez’s relentless form is set to continue. He has now struck five goals in three assists in his last three league outings and bonus points from today’s game would give him three consecutive double figure hauls.

Stewart Downing
Back-to-back goals for the former Middlesbrough man means that he has now returned a goal or assist in the last three Gameweeks. Significantly, he has started the last 14 league matches and with Joe Allen set to undergo a shoulder operation in the coming weeks, it could now be that Brendan Rodgers settles on today’s 4-4-2 formation, with Downing continuing as a fixture. His 5.7 price tag is beginning to look appealing for those seeking a low-to-mid price differential.

Steven Gerrard
Those holding the Liverpool skipper earned further goal returns as Gerrard converted from the spot once again. He has now scored four goals in his last seven starts, bizarrely, alternating a blank and a goal over the course of those seven matches. While today’s strike keeps him simmering, Gerrard’s owners will perhaps be concerned at his recent reliance of penalties as a result of a deeper midfield role.

Jose Enrique
Once again the Spaniard got the upper hand on team-mate Glen Johnson by providing the assist for Suarez’s opening goal – his sixth of the campaign. That’s three assists and a goal in the last five for Enrique, while Johnson has lagged behind with just a single assist in the same spell. While Johnson goes on showing greater attacking threat, it’s the Spaniard who is providing the reliable end product, right now. Johnson needs to start delivering on his potential to justify our faith and the more expensive price tag.

Jan Vertonghen
In a weekend when both Christian Benteke and Romelu Lukaku delivered, Tottenham’s own Belgian import stepped up with an unlikely double to, at one point, turn the Anfield encounter in Spurs’ favour. Vertonghen has been in strong form alongside Michael Dawson in recent weeks but has still sat out three of the last ten league games. It’s that lack of security, plus the cut-price appeal of Dawson, that has tempered any investment in the classy defender, despite his undoubted ability to contribute attacking returns.

Gareth Bale
While Bale failed to score for a sixth successive league match, his owners will take some consolation from two assists as the Welshman’s delivery allowed Vertonghen to covert his goals. The bandwagaon rolls on.

Papiss Cisse
The Senegal striker shrugged off a midweek illness to start against the Potters and tuck home an at the death winner to send St James’ Park into raptures. Cisse continues to show a spark of form, having now scored five goals in his last 11 league starts. His Fantasy stock is, however, dented somewhat by the continued success of Newcastle’s mid-price midfield assets.

Yohan Cabaye & Moussa Sissoko
The two Frenchman go on delivering from the Magpies midfield. Priced almost identically after Sissoko’s recent dramatic climb in ownership, the pair have provided seven goals and three assists between them since Gameweek 23 and the start of the Newcastle revival. Sissoko remains the favoured option: he has now scored or assisted in five of his six starts for Alan Pardew and with short-term fixtures strong and the run-in also favourable, his claim for a place in our five man midfield goes on gathering pace.

Going Down

Daniel Sturridge
Re-installed in the Liverpool lineup after his recent thigh injury, Sturridge played up with Suarez in a conventional looking 4-4-2 but, when his owners needed him to stand up to the charge of the Uruguayan, Sturridge fell short. Suarez looks on course for a double figure haul, while Sturridge drew his first blank in a Liverpool shirt in the league and was eventually replaced late on. With goal threat on show today, there won’t be alarm bells ringing just yet, but Suarez’s showing offered little encouragement to those who presumed that Sturridge presence would see the balance of power shift a little.

Pepe Reina
An unexpected absentee from the Liverpool team-sheet, the calf injury that kept him out was untimely for those banking on his presence in a Gameweek that found many Fantasy managers scratching around for numbers. Post-match comments indicate that Reina should be fit to return to contention for the trip to Southampton next weekend, however.

Davide Santon
The Santon versus Mathieu Debuchy debate rumbles on in Fantasy quarters but meanwhile, there are signs that Alan Pardew is beginning to look at his options at left-back, with Santon’s defensive work coming under scrutiny. While he has impressed going forward, today Pardew hauled him off and replaced him with a natural left-footer in Massadio Haïdara on 73 minutes. It would hint that Santon’s security of start could yet come under threat over Newcastle’s remaining matches. Perhaps the most important consideration, however, is that Newcastle have now gone seven without a clean sheet.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

You'll all be pleased to know that I caught my ML leader today, and we are both level on points.

Do you all change your strategy if you get to the summit of your ML? I think I hold a trump card in Suarez, as the 3/4 teams below me don't have him. Should I just let them worry about what I do?

I'd concentrate on your own game. Do what you think is best to get yourself the most points. If they get more, they get more. Very much like real football, in many ways.

I don't change my strategy at any point, I just aim to get the most points possible over the course of the season. For example, if I know who my main rival will captain I will only go the same way if I believe he has the best chance of scoring big out of all my players. If I think another player is likely to do better, I'll happily take that gamble; if it pays off then I have even more breathing space.

I'm not. Maybe they think he represents good value. I have Rafael and sticking with him, he is one of the most attacking full-backs around in the best team in the Premier League, a relative 'snip' for 6 million.

I was going to as Bego sux, however I changed my mind this morning as I have more important transfers to make and they have some tough opponents in the run in. Also he may see some bench time and I may want another Utd attacker(MF) to go along with RVP and Evans for their DGW.

Remy's goal this weekend now means he has scored every time he has started, I believe and his promise has repaid my faith in him since my wildcard following the double game week. On the contrary, Lambert has failed to deliver in the past two weeks I have had him, a curse that I seem to remember occurring earlier in the season. To my knowledge, I've had him for a total of around six game weeks this season, to which he has returned in just one.

The easier question, then, is who to ship out for van Persie, a man who is surely a no brainer given the fact that United are now out of the Champions League. A man who is so clinical that I have no idea why he isn't being touted alongside Suarez and Bale for player of the season. Do these pundits actually watch the games? Or is his performances last season in a poor Arsenal side clouding their judgment? Either way, that should be irrelevant. This season, he has been immense.

So if we're going Lambert for van Persie, that leaves around 2 million to find. The second question then, is one of the midfielder to SHIP to find that cash. We have Walcott, a man who showed a plethora of worth once he'd finished throwing his toys out of the pram because he wasn't getting the contract that he felt he himself was worthy of, but has in recent weeks faded somewhat and fell back into the shadow of the more graceful Cazorla. Mata, again, who's points tend to come in fits and starts but has the added bonus of being a better footballer than Walcott but the added drawback of being rotated by the fat Spanish waiter. Then there's Bale, well, just no. Then there's Sissoko, a man who I drafted in this week for the foreseeable future and finally, Michu, another Spaniard who is playing up front in a side who don't half score a lot of goals, but again, who's points tends to come in batches.

    Who is it to be?

Van Persie, 2 legs v Real, a big game, nothing. A great player in an Arsenal team that was happy to qualify for CL. United's expectation is to win the league and CL every season. I think the extra pressure got to him v Real. Definitely the best striker in the league, but Bale and Suarez, with less illustrious teammates, are better footballers.

Not sure what you've been reading but most discussions I've seen re. player of the year have RVP right up there with the other two. I think the thing that will count against RVP is that he's fading near the awards and people can have short memories. Bale on the other hand wasn't at the level of the other two until the turn of the year, but that may well count in his favour. One thing worth remembering is that RVP's goals in the league have won something like twice as many points for his team as Suarez's have.

In answer to your question I think Michu or Mata are the boys to ship out. Mata looks worthy of holding for the next few fixtures though. Don't forget Rooney - well worth a look if that would save you needing to free up funds.

Yes, way back in 1975-76. Liverpool had to play in the UEFA Cup final and so their final league game against Wolves was postponed for ten days.

Liverpool were a point behind league leaders QPR in the table, whose players had gone on holiday. When the game was eventually played, Wolves went 1-0 up and held the lead until the 77th minute - which would have made QPR champions.

But Liverpool hit three late goals to win the match and the league. As a result, the Football League (and then the Premier League) have held the final matches at the same time ever since.

Reschedule their GW36 game for this week and double it as Cup replay. After 90 mins points awarded. If it's a draw then will go for extra time and penalties for Cup semi qualification. 😉

Sorry to say I was reading through the posts and was disgusted by this comment someone made:

"Van Persie, 2 legs v Real, a big game, nothing. A great player in an Arsenal team that was happy to qualify for CL. United’s expectation is to win the league and CL every season. I think the extra pressure got to him v Real. Definitely the best striker in the league, but Bale and Suarez, with less illustrious teammates, are better footballers."

Better footballers? Complete and utter garbage.

Not going to elaborate as I'm sure the stats speak for themselves..

Can't see them cancelling next Saturday on such short notice, particularly as the FA is such a weak sister compared to the PL. Playing the replay on semi-final day would be the logical choice. I guess it depends on the money involved and who stands to lose out, though.
