As we wave farewell to a Gameweek that failed to deliver the anticipated bounty of points, we assess the lessons learned. How Luis Suarez turns nasty when the goals go missing, how Everton’s recovery could be short-lived and consider whether it’s time to severe ties with treasured assets, with motivation now a key factor.

Suarez turns bad boy when things go awry…
It was all going so well for the Uruguayan. With double figure Fantasy returns in his last three outings, Suarez was flying and had become a fixture in many a squad, providing a hugely viable alternative for those shedding the off-colour Robin Van Persie. Liverpool’s 3-1 defeat at Southampton has put a rather different complexion on matters, however. With the St Mary’s yellow card, Suarez is now just a single booking away from serving a two-match ban. He has to navigate through the next three league outings, avoiding another caution, in order to save himself and his Fantasy owners from an untimely interruption to his season run-in. Significantly, Suarez’s last four bookings have all come in Liverpool defeats so, with Villa, West Ham and Reading to come, perhaps victories will ensure not only goals for Suarez but also a safe path to the April 14 curfew date.

Everton may have re-gained momentum but will struggle to maintain it…
The victory over City continued Everton’s incredible record against the blue side of Manchester and, having threatened to wreck their title hopes last season, this time around the Toffees seem to have applied the final nail in their coffin. Everton’s performance was encouraging ahead of the Gameweek 33 double with QPR and Arsenal although, with both Marouane Fellaini and Steven Pienaar now facing two-match bans, there’s a real risk that David Moyes’ side will lose the momentum gained on Saturday over the next pair of matches. Everton will face Stoke at Goodison and Spurs at the Lane without arguably their key attacking players and, with Phil Jagielka and Tim Howard also absent at the back, arguably the spine of the side will be brittle. This could be good news for those holding Stoke and Spurs assets and curb interest in Everton ahead of their double.

The keeper situation is worsening by the week…
So Mark Bunn picks up a ban and could lose his Gameweek 31 start to John Ruddy. Wojciech Szczesny is kept on the bench and seemingly looks to have lost the jersey to Lukas Fabianksi for the time being. Ali Al-Habsi is dropped to the bench with Joel Robles given a start against Newcastle. Meanwhile Tim Howard, Tim Krul and Pepe Reina remain sidelined. In a nutshell, then, these are turbulent times between the posts, aided somewhat by Asmir Begovic’s clean sheet – his first in twelve league outings. Can we put trust in the Stoke stopper again or should we just shelve our ambitions in the mid-price and jump on Petr Cech, Joe Hart or David De Gea for the run-in? Even with the United man apparently ensconced in behind a rotating back four, there’s even a chance we’ll see some rotation at Old Trafford once the title is sewn up, such is our fortune when it comes to this position.

Old loyalties are being tested…
Forget Robin Van Persie’s run of one goal in six for a moment. How about Theo Walcott’s similar run of no goal in five, Juan Mata’s run of a just an assist in his last four or even Michu’s barren spell of goal returns in one of his last twelve league appearances? Having put faith in these Fantasy mainstays and been richly rewarded for long spells, suddenly the faith is being stretched to breaking point, as previously consistent scorers hit the buffers. In a Gameweek that saw so few heavy-hitters deliver, we can perhaps be philosophical about the failings of these players but at what point do you cut your losses and look elsewhere? Perhaps the willingness to cut ties with established players when they begin to falter is the difference between a good Fantasy manager and a great one.

Motivation and fatigue are becoming key factors…
With Swansea struggling for form after sealing a European spot, Newcastle and Spurs failing after Europa League exertions and City falling flat in their doomed quest to challenge United, suddenly it seems that Fantasy managers have to look to external factors more than ever. Is there a risk that teams without the motivation of a relegation battle or the scramble for a top four finish, suffering from a diminished will to win? While Aston Villa and QPR put on a show that typified the cut and thrust of Premier League football with millions at stake, Stoke and West Brom played out a meaningless 90 minutes almost without incident. As we reach the season climax, it seems we now have to question what’s left in the tank and whether there’s enough at stake to motivate players to perform at their top level and for managers to field their strongest lineups. Failure to consider such factors in our selection policy could be decisive over the run-in.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

My only Chelsea player at the moment is Luiz. Downgrading him for an Arse def would free up funds, and there is every chance he is benched this GW to be fresh for the FA cup two days later. But it seems like madness to lose a Chelsea player when they MIGHT have a DGW in a couple of weeks. Thoughts?

Feel I've hit a cul-de-sac with my team , any input would be very much appreciated :
    Ming/tremmel
    Davies /Clyne / Onouha / Debuchy / Harte
    Michu / bale / Fellani / Wally / Snodgrass
    Rvp / Suarez / lambert

Hmm. Looks like cash is a problem, which might mean RVP needs to become Rooney. Good chance RVP is rested this GW for the Chelsea clash, and it would free up money for some defensive upgrades, or Giroud up front, or Michu to Caz.

Do you still think getting rid of Davies is a priority? I'm getting pretty sick of 1s from him.

Rvp > Rooney and Michu > Lampard looks the way forward for a hit.
But I'm tempted to just do Snod > Maloney benching Afro fir his 2 and see if I can't ride it out till wc.
I need to lose Onouha and Harte obviously for Wilson so Davies (Taylor nearing full fitness 🙠) is the least of my worries ,
Im now thinking of wc earlier ie 33 when things get clearer i hope !
        Thoughts EJ ?

You know, the Snod to Maloney move actually looks pretty smart. I wouldn't want to bring in a Chelsea mid this week because they will have FA cup two days after Sunderland, so rotation will be mad. This is a good week to play Maloney, as good as any, so I say ride it out. Then you'll have cash for, say, an Arse def and eventually Michu to Caz.

Thanks as always EJ - tbh the Maloney move is what I'm thinking , as you say I need some cash .
He's nailed on / penos / dgw somewhere and cheap and I'd only want Afro back for the Dgw ,
I think it's a case of a little pain now for some long term gain - thanks again.

      Ouch! a cul-de-sac indeed.
Tremmel has been replaced by Vorm...
You have a really expensive front 3. Drop one of them for an in form lower team striker. Check out Remy, Benteke, Lukaku and especially Kone.
Then replace Tremmel with a more expensive keeper, i have De GEA, hes got me 5 straight clean sheets but his price has just started to rise.
Dump Clyne for a Norwich defender
I am top 10,000 and these switches have helped me

Can someone remind me why Chelsea and Spurs have a potential blank in GW33?

If they win vs. United, they play in the next round of the cup on the weekend of their GW33 clash with Spurs, meaning the Spurs game will be postponed.

What about their match vs. Fulham? Why can't that be played mid-week alongside the City v.s Wigan and West Ham vs. United games? There's no Europe League that week. I'm aware it's not been rescheduled yet, but is there a reason why it won't be, leaving both Spurs and Chelsea with at least one fixture in GW33.

    Have I forgotten something?

Whoever wins from United and Chelsea has an FA cup game at the weekend in GW33. For United that would mean a single GW but since Chelsea currently only have a single GW scheduled, it could mean a blank.

If they lose vs. United and the Fulham game is rescheduled for midweek GW33, they have a double.

I don't know what the likelihood of the Fulham game being rescheduled for midweek GW33 though. That's why I'm asking!

Maybe they're waiting to see what happens in the FA Cup replay with United. Both Chelsea and Spurs are still in Europe and my guess is that they would want to ideally move Chelsea vs. Spurs to mid-week if Chelsea go through in the cup so as to avoid Spurs having to fit in another fixture in a future week.

Fulham aren't in any cup competitions so they won't mind playing the game with Chelsea later in the season.

It's not clear. Wenger seems to think Szczesney is in his long-term plans and explained he needed a rest as the reason for dropping him for the last two games (he said he would before the games and explained his decision).

Szczesny is in the squad for international games vs. Ukraine and San Marino (along with Boruc and Kuszczak). If Szczesny starts and shows form, there is no reason for Wenger to keep him on the bench for a prolonged period.

    Morning folks.

Who's wandering the keeperless desert with me? I'm no closer to figuring out what to do with my Szczesny-Cerny fail.

Some candidates I'm still considering, but none are without significant downsides:

DDG - has Chelsea FA Cup game two days after GW31 game = the start of rotation with Lindy?
Robles - CS unlikely and has only actually played one game and no-one really knows why.
Cech - Very expensive and has games against Spurs, Pool and United (and maybe a blank?)
Cesar - Loftus Road has not lived up to our hopes of being a fortress again
Boruc - Southampton aren't exactly full of clean sheets
    Schwarzer - ditto Fulham

It's such a tedious problem. Anyone got anywhere with it?

Cool , 1 good nailed on keeper is all anyone needs at this stage and hope for say 3/4 cs , I've Ming/tremmel (long story ) but at least he plays every week ,
I really don't see the point in getting worried about a gk at this stage - get someone nailed on and concentrate on the rest if your team is my advice Roscola.

Might be a bit late but De Gea has put me in good stead. 5 straight clean sheets, not as likely to get rotated as the rest as he's a keeper, his price is on the rise however. Sometimes keepers require a more simple way of thinking.

Yes, unfortunately. He gave a bizarre interview to the Guardian a few years ago in which he quite happily volunteered all this appalling information about himself. He said he disliked the cinema because he found the stories "too unbelievable" but went to watch Seabiscuit because it was about horses. He still fell asleep halfway through though. The interviewer actually seemed embarrassed on Owen's behalf.

Look at the pic at the top of that article. Looks who is always first over to join in the goal celebration. No man runs faster than David Beckham towards a goal celebration.

great player in his day but really has to be filed under 'unfulfilled potential'. should have had way more than 220 career goals. yes there's been the injuries but after Liverpool you really have to question just where football lay on his list of priorities. i think its great that he cultivated other interests outside the game (read the recent news story on Lee Hendrie) but he could and should have put more focus into his football career. he's had the rest of his life for the other stuff.

I think he fulfilled his potential but just not for long enough. Shows the grass isn't always greener on the other side .. left to win trophies the season before Liverpool won the CL if I remember correctly.

He could have gone on to be a LFC legend like Gerrard ...

For quality I'd have Torres highest, but Owen was probably more effective. I would argue Suarez trumps them both for contribution to the team though. Works harder to help out, so gives more quality in the end.

Caught in two minds for this week, two frees, but need both frees in GW32 for setting up for the double, so just using one this week. I'm tempted to get Berba in for QPR this week, but this will restrict my options for next week and post cup replay/Saurez tenth booking.. GW33 I have already in mind Michu>Fellaini.

So therefore I'm contemplating playing Schneiderlin for the whole run in, and using the spare 3.5m I have to upgrade at the back and maybe get two of De Gea/Rafael/Zabaleta as my defence is all budget? Of course until the replay is done we don't know where we are, and whether Saurez survives until GW33 as if he gets a booking AND Utd lose the replay then surely Saurez>Rooney for the double is a no-brainer!!??

So I'm thinking Hunt>Anichebe, leaves 3.5m in bank, and two frees for next week and sit tight until after the replay? Then either get rid of Harte for a heavy hitter, or deal with Saurez, along with Mig>De Gea maybe?
