Fluctuating player prices are here to stay, of that I am pretty certain. There’s no doubt in my mind that the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game benefits from the extra dimension they bring, helping to separate the game from its rivals. Others seem to lack a significant layer of strategy without such a feature and, when Fantasy managers are able to construct replica squads, with fixed player prices, this simply adds to mid-season and end of season templates which frustrate and kill the enthusiasm in a mini-league chase.

Having said all this, like most elements of our Fantasy games and the FPL game in particular, there is merit in examining how efficiently the system works – how it governs the decisions of Fantasy managers and consider that, perhaps, there are flaws to be ironed out or improvements that can be made.

My greatest bugbear with the current system in the FPL is that I’ve always felt that insight – the forward thinking involved in acquiring a player that hits form – is punished due to the loss of funds associated with selling that player on at a later date. For my mind, the 50% lost as a result of selling a player that has risen a million or so, becomes a huge factor that can pray on the mind of a Fantasy manager. This can cause hesitation and deliberation that ultimately hands an advantage to those who are able to be more agile in their thinking because a loss of funds is not such an issue to them.

The current situation with Michu is a prime example. Currently priced at 8.4, those Fantasy managers who bought him in early around his initial valuation of 6.5 will now be faced with losing over a million as a result of shipping him out. Arguably, Michu’s form has warranted action for some time but, undoubtedly, the funds lost will have played on the minds of those who have held him for a good while; perhaps not so much at this stage in the season but it may have been a factor in weeks gone by.

Those who had more flexibility because they got Michu later, or perhaps have a smaller sum to lose, have had the advantage here. They can make their decision on the Spaniard without a significant loss of funds being an issue and react quicker to another player in form.

The counter argument is often “well you earned his points early on – that’s your reward”. The problem here is that I don’t see any reason why I shouldn’t be rewarded without being handed any disadvantage later down the line. Of course I should earn the points benefit for getting Michu early but why should this be partially balanced out by the issue of inflexibility caused by a severe loss of funds later in the season? Why should I be punished at all? My foresight surely should have gained me a win-win situation.

It’s very easy to isolate such potential flaws without putting forward solutions and, while it seems likely that this situation will remain unaddressed, it doesn’t stop me considering a number of routes that could be explored that would remove this penalty for far-sighted Fantasy managers. For starters, there could be a ruling that 100% of the price increase is gained back on players sold that were in your initial squad lineup. This would suitably reward Fantasy managers for identifying players that would go on to become leading assets over the course of the season.

This may, of course, throw the balance of the game out considerably, so how about the option to lock down a limited number of players? Perhaps contracts that could be assigned to a player in each position that you select that will always reward 100% value when you next sell them on. This would introduce a new strategic element – allowing Fantasy managers to back a handful of their squad selections, making them immune to the 50% drop.

Admittedly, I’m a Fantasy manager that often deliberates and procrastinates, a flaw that holds me back. However, the potential loss of funds from selling a player becomes a factor that only compounds this chink in my armour. While I recognise that I should be braver as a Fantasy manager and it’s perhaps this that is preventing me from breaking into the very top ranks, I’m convinced that the game mechanics associated with price rises exacerbates my problem. Maybe if I could make 100% back on Michu, I’d have sold him weeks ago and brought in Moussa Sissoko earlier and caught his points. In fact, that’s probably highly likely.

At times over the season, I feel punished for having made the right decision on a player early and have to sit back and watch other Fantasy managers enjoy more freedom with their squads – freedom which often leads to them make up the points I originally gained from my early foresight. With the points in the bag, I should be as free as them, as flexible, to make the same decisions. Basically, I should have my cake and eat it: I’ve earned it.

Price rises are surely here to stay and will continue to enrich our Fantasy experience but, for this Fantasy manager, there remains an injustice at play.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

        The logic:

I need to buy Santi anyway right? I am doing that transfer, but instead Mata to Santi I am doing Walcott to Santi. I will know more after 1st April who is having double Che or Utd. That is win win situation for keeping/ selling Mata. I prefer having Mata than Sissoko this week by a mile.

Next week Walcott is away and I will again prefer Mata at home. Next GW is more clear. If needed Walcott can be brought than, either for mata or for Bale, depends of the situation.

It is the same number of transfers.
P.S. Sissoko scored at home against Che not away

I've said it before but I'll say it again, Hazard is more likely to be benched vs. Soton than Mata is. Mata has yet to be rested for an away game under Rafa. Hazard however has (against Norwich - check the facts if you don't believe me)

This is mainly because Hazard is clearly a superior player at home and Mata is superior away from home. Rafa understands the FACTS.

    So stop scaremongering you fishmongers!!!

    1) Suarez or Santi for (c). Feel like I should give it Luis in his last week for me.

    2) Still considering a 1 week punt buy selling either Michu or Siss. Anyone worth punting on? Coutinho, Kags, Young, Nani (if fit). Also have a keeper issue with Migs having an awful fixture and Bunn as back-up. Can i get by just playing Migs this week and then sort it out on wc?

He looked good against Estonia (I know Estonia....but good movement for his goal and clinical finish plus very accurate assist from the left.)

I'll take a look live tomorrow at the Dutch against Romania which will give me a better idea.

My concern with him is he'll play 180 minutes with Hunterlaar injured, and therefore is favourite to be rested v Sunderland. But he may still be a good DGW 33 punt.

Suarez (if Walcott doesn't play and/or Carzola is not expected to play in 'the hole')

Coutinho (safe) or Kagawa (best upside but hardly nailed on for 60+ minutes)

Nani if he starts has huge upside. One of the most explosive players FPL has ever seen.

True, I just think with Kagawa being flown back by private jet that he'll get more minutes.

Just saw this article. Not only is it excellent, but I want to encourage Mark to keep posting these kinds of things. The other articles are informative, but opinions get debates started and debates are great.

I made a point like Mark's earlier in the year, but reading a few of these comments I think I might have been wrong. I agree that the 50% loss fails to rewaard forsight as much as would be desireable. But if you take it away then (a) as someone pointed out earlier people can just make too much cash by smart investment and (b) switching ou players according to fixtures becomes too easy, and there is little incentive to choose players who are "fixture-proof". The current system rewards those who select players who will perform week in, week out, and makes it harder for people to hop on and off bandwagons.

    More opinion articles please!

@ Daniel. It is not the same number of transfers. Mata or Bale to Caz in GW 33 is 1 move. Mata/Bale to Walcott in gameweek 33 and Walcott to Caz in gw 31 is 2 moves.
So basically it is a -4 and 1 less DGW player you can have for the same number of transfers for GW 33. Could end up costing you a -8. Will Caz be better than Sissoko by 4/8 pts this GW. Possible, but I would not bet on it.

Very rarely disagree with Mark, but strongly do here.

You don't lose any money. You bought him for 6.5 million and now you can sell him for 7.4 million (if you want). Your reward is you got a player in cheap and got the use of him. Now choose to bank a tidy profit and spend it elsewhere, or keep him. If you had the full sell on price that would completely ruin the balance of the game, and would make taking hits every week the best course of action. The current system is perfect.

I totally agree... if Mark's system would be put into place it would create an even bigger gap between the top's and the bottom's and make it harder for losers to catch up... at least they have a chance now

So what you're saying is someone who intelligently bought a player low shouldnt be rewarded for his increase 100% so someone who didn't aka the "losers" as you put it can have a better chance to catch up? That's ridiculous, i agree with Mark.

1st of all you only sell a player when you think he's become 'overpriced' or you think theres someone else whos gonna do better.
2nd of all you bank a profit.
3rd The 'losers' as you called them, have lost full value on any player they bought who decreased in value.
          What are you afraid of?
The name of the game is to keep making good decisions or you get punished just as the 'losers' did at the begining.
You want decreased risk cos a few players you picked went up in value?

I dont understand how you would lose funds for selling a player who has risen a lot. Youve actually gained money? that money you are supposedly losing cant be used anyway... unless youre planning to buy the player back

    What trades should I do?

    A. Bunn and Lambert -> Boruc and Berbatov (-4 hit)
    B.Walcott -> Cazorla
    C. Bunn, Mata and Lambert -> Schwarzer, Cazorla and Berbatov (-8 hit)

    Thanks in advance 🙂

Sorry Mark but I've never read an article that I've disagreed more with. Everywhere in it you focus on the so called 'money lost'. But theres a whole other side to the coin and thats the money gained. If losing 'team value' worries you in making a transfer then its poor management. You gotta be decisive, and ya gotta make the decision. Get it right and the player you bring in will get you points and go up in value so you are still winning. Get it wrong, then you get it wrong but no point focusing on lost 'team value' as a result of that.
Using Michu as an example, bought for 6.5, can sell at 8.5 for 7.5. If I sell Michu for 8.5 after buying for 6.5 then I have 7.5 to spend. Thats a million more than when I started and a million more than someone who never had him. But I only sell him cos I think theres a player for 7.5 or less who's gonna do better than him. Its spotting those opportunities AND having the testicular fortitude to make those decisions that separates the top 2,000 or so from the rest.
What you're asking for is that your risk be reduced because you picked a few good players. But risk and reward is what its always been about 🙂
