Out final nod to Gameweek 36 assesses the security of premium priced stoppers, the flourishing form of Paul Lambert’s Villa and the opportunity to freshen up our five man midfield as a result of the expected absence of a Spanish gunslinger.

The Player

Fantasy managers loaded up on attacking options for the double as many racked up points hits for one last roll of the dice. City’s fixtures had looked particularly enticing but ultimately Roberto Mancini’s rest and rotation policy undid the best-laid plans – with just a single goal accrued over the trip to Swansea and home clash against West Brom, the reliability afforded by Joe Hart ultimately proved crucial.

Recovering from a back spasm to take his place between the sticks, the City stopper was one of only three players – along with James Milner and Samir Nasri – to start both matches as Mancini ensured his key outfield assets were all well rested ahead of Saturday’s FA Cup Final against Wigan. The only double Gameweek player with over 10% ownership to hit double figures, Hart racked up 15 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points – that’s the same as Sergio Aguero, Carlos Tevez and Edin Dzeko managed between them.

Hart was made to work for his points, though, particularly against the Baggies – a total of seven saves was his highest tally of the season. Indeed, he has now registered save points in four of his last six appearances – previously, he had managed a mere seven save points up to Gameweek 32. The City number one has now mirrored last term’s 17 clean sheets and is three ahead of any other keeper, with Petr Cech next best on 14; those who switched from David De Gea last week will be more than happy with their trade, given the United keeper’s subsequent drop to the bench against Chelsea.

While there’s no doubt the cheap keeper rotation policy is likely to be preferred by the vast majority of Fantasy managers, Hart’s continued resilience and consistency of starts under Mancini certainly affords us a hassle-free route into a defence that has proven, once again, to be the most secure in the top-flight. With only two defenders – Leighton Baines and Patrice Evra – currently bettering Hart’s 149 points, he’s certainly making a strong case for consideration as a one-stop keeper option next time round. With rotation in the top defences looking like an alarming trend as the season’s roll by, it may well be time to reconsider our keeper strategies.

The Team

At times this season, a drop down into the Championship seemed almost inevitable for Villa. Battered 5-0 at City back in November, Paul Lambert’s young side simply looked too inexperienced to survive – the Christmas period was particularly cruel, with an 8-0 annihilation at the Bridge followed by back-to-back hammerings at the hands of Spurs and Wigan as the midlands outfit looked devoid of both ideas and optimism.

Over the past couple of months, however, Lambert’s show of faith has finally paid off. With his raft of summer signings starting to click, Villa have won five and drawn one of their last eight and are now five points clear of the drop zone with just two matches remaining in what is a remarkable turnaround in fortunes.

While Christian Benteke has deservedly hogged the Fantasy plaudits in his debut season, his consistent exploits are likely to earn the Belgian a significant price hike across the Fantasy games next time out – providing Villa can clinch their survival, of course. The last few Gameweeks have hinted at a handful of assets who could well merit our attentions as ready-made differentials next term.

Lambert’s recent move to 4-3-3 has afforded Matthew Lawton the platform to bomb forward from right-back and register a goal and three assists in his last seven. Ashley Westwood is finally settling and has provided a pair of assists in each of his last two, Gabby Agbonlahor has racked up six goals, three assists and 11 bonus points in his previous seven, while young Andreas Weimann has returned three goals and three assists in the last 10 Gameweeks of his breakthrough season.

With survival looking more assured, Villa’s progress next season may well see Fantasy managers turn in their direction with renewed confidence, particularly if Lambert maintains the attacking verve that has been such a feature in recent weeks.

Talking Point

Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure from United dominates the world of football but in Fantasy terms, we’re left assessing our options after the double Gameweek failed to provide the necessary shake-up to the mini-league landscape. While Michu’s hamstring injury in the first match of Swansea’s double Gameweek was ill-timed, his likely absence for the remaining two matches could now provide the next opportunity for change.

Looking at the top five in the overall FPL standings, the double Gameweek has had little impact. Given that the Swansea midfielder had 45% ownership heading into last weekend’s deadline, his absence will have a significant effect for the run in, with Fantasy managers’ choice of replacement looking critical. So far, over 112,000 FPL managers have moved Michu on, with Theo Walcott the preferred replacement ahead of Arsenal’s home clash with Wigan and trip to Newcastle.

Both Gareth Bale and Marouane Fellaini have also been snapped up in huge numbers but as we mentioned in our Midfield Differentials article earlier this week, there are several overlooked alternatives worth considering. With the relegation battle still raging, the likes of Hatem Ben Arfa, Adam Johnson and Robert Snodgrass could prove worthwhile acquisitions, while favourable fixtures for Liverpool and Arsenal means Philippe Coutinho and Tomas Rosicky could make all the difference as the FPL season looks set to go down to the wire in its closest finish in recent years.

Those Fantasy managers who need to take a selection risk now have the chance to do just that and, with an array of mid-price talent available, we could yet see a degree of swing across the mini-leagues for the final two fixtures.

    Mata Hazard Bale
    Kone Tevez Benteke

Yeah i know its not ideal for this gameweek, but it was made in mind of the double gameweek just passed, compounded with Yaya Toure's injury
So, any ideas on how to improve the team for this gameweek?

sometimes you need to take hits mate.. Walcott vs Wigan & Sturridge vs Fulham could repay you with 15+ points ..

Hazard may not start (was limping yesterday) & Kone away .. may give you 5 points..

Who knows. I think the betting for United's next manager will be something like

            10/11 SAF

Giggs seems inevitable at some point.

Amuses me how much money the bookies must make off these markets though - there was presumably still millions on the line from Ferguson's last 'retirement'. Can't remember who would have been favourite back then though. O'Neill?

First off, I think it's funny how Scotland is considered the same 'country' when convenient.

Secondly, I find it extremely narrow minded and xenophopic to make this argument for a club manager. It's like saying the CEO of Barclays should be a Brit because it's a British bank. Well, United is owned by Americans, has more supporters abroad than it does in England, and they should want to propser by hiring the best manager for the job regardless of his country of origin.

In the 21st century you cannot, simply cannot, judge someone's professional ability by his country of origin. And being a manager of a football club is a job.

I know, but United wanted a loyal stable manager who would remain for a long time.

When I applied for my job the fact my parents lived close by was a major plus as it means I am less likely to leave after they spend money on training me. The united job is no different.

Other factors being similar I think it's wishful thinking to disregard the cultural argument. It might be the world as you want it to be, but that is not the world as it is. British managers have been behind tactically for a while. But SAF has not and clearly it's worked extremely well. On the same token, British managers have not been given much of a chance to manage the big clubs (Liverpool no longer count) so judging them solely by their success is like writing off Moyes because he was stuck at Everton.

Look at other countries where they are tactically adept such as Italy and Spain, the clubs are usually run by their own and the national teams too. And it works bloody well.

Oh, and countless German managers in charge of their own sides too, Klopp, Heynckes and Low being the latest shining examples.

We all want a world where it doesn't matter, but reality has to come first. It matters.

True, but cultural familiarity is only one factor among many that governs how good a manager might be, it's not the overriding factor.

          I respect your points Pepin.

My feeling on it is that they've made a good choice to appoint the next best British manager at this point in time. Moyes' is also the longest serving next to Wenger and has the most experience. Mourinho didn't deserve it as much.

Scotland shares out culture completely, it is the same country except where Andy Murray is concerned.

I have a similiar view to Isacki, the manager should share the ideals and values of this country. That doesnt mean they have to be born and bred british, but it helps if they have lived here for a bit.

At the end of the day it should be the best man for the job, end off.

(but the CEO of Barclays should be british, as should the CEO of every major bank, and to be honest every prime minister/president/royalty should be british 😉 )

Typical party line response now that Mourinho did not get it. I dont know a single United fan personally who wanted Moyes but thats not to say they wont get behind him...until thete is no title next year or Champions League semi and then itll be comeback Fergie...as I said Frank O'Farrell MKII.

Well you don't know as many as I do. There are loads who didn't want Mourinho that I know and since it was a 2 horse race, they are more accepting of Moyes.

Hard to quantify how many more United fans you know than me. What I am saying isnt supposed to be a dig either. Just merely stating when Moyes name was mentioned they all cringed and said it better be Mourinho. The whole British manager thing is irrelevant also and wont count for much if there isnt any success. Then it will be a failing on those who appointed him.

what to do with this double game week hangover?

    De Gea
    Sagna, Nastasic, Vertonghen, Baines
    Fellaini, Bale, Yaya
    Kone, Aguero, Lukaku

    Robles, Maloney, Shaw, Michu

obvs get rid of Michu. Probably Walcott (c), but rival has taken a 4 point hit, his players are better, so I'm feeling a hit to freshen up my team. Defence is fine. Yaya to Lampard???

My Michu exit options with pro's and cons. Any help is much appreciated.

    Coutinho
Pros - Two good fixtures, nailed on, decent form
Cons - No Gerrard or Suarez may limit Liverpool's offensive fluidity, not a lot of goal threat, not a lot to play for

    HBA
Pros - Explosive, lots of goal threat, fighting for survival, potentially on penalties, good GW37 fixture
Cons - Not fully fit, GW38 fixture is tough, Newcastle pretty impotent offensively

    AJ
Pros - With Fletcher, Sess and Gardner out, he is the most potent attacker, fighting for survival, decent GW37 fixture, explosive
Cons - Bad GW38 fixture, inconsistent, very weak support talent around him

    Fellaini
Pros - Looks to be back in the hole, motivated for Moyes' last two games, been close to score in the last few games
Cons - Poor form, not a differential, nothing left to play for, always close to a red card, could play deep, tough GW38 fixture

      I'd rank them:

      Coutinho
      Fellaini
      HBA
      AJ

Newcastle and Sunderland are imploding at the minute, I wouldn't want to touch them. How about Lampard/Oscar?

countinho - i think borini will def play so bare that in mind. But hes guaranteed mins. worthy option if u got 0 liverpool cover

HBA - risky but could rack up the most pts. Also u have sissoko who may play. so id rule him out.

AJ is a bonus magnet but just not keen on th pick

i like fellaini for this week pep he is worth it in the hole but is not a differential.

safe pick is fellers...altho coutinho could do fine - but reckon he will get u assists. where as fellers can get goals...and goals = bonuses

        Kagawa's last 12 GWs: 0, 0, 0, 21, 1, 3, 1, 3, 8, 3, 0, 0

Why the love for him now? I liked the look of him two months ago - I don't know.

          Don't buy it at all.

They're banking on the fact Fergie will field second string lineups.

They are. He might well. But even then, even if Kagawa starts, I'm not banking on a score resembling the highest one there which has caught everyone's eye.

              But therein lies the problem.

United won't be winning big with a second string team, so even if he does start, he won't get particularly big scores.

High risk, not much potential for reward.

They shouldn't be winning big with their second string, unfortunately they've got such a deep squad / inferior opponents that it's still possible - beating Wigan 4-0 without RVP, Rooney and Evra for starters.

I just think Kags blows extremely hot and cold. Sometimes he's there as the passer, sometimes he goes for the goals. A Cazorla-type CAM.

        Here my team

        Fabianski – Robles
        Demel – Baines – Clichy – Luiz – R. Barnett
        Walcott – Bale – Nasri – Schniederlin – Maloney
        Defoe – RVP – Tevez

I think I may do Defoe, Tevez and Nasri out and >> Sturridge, Beneteke and Mata in. (8pt hit )

What do you think of that transfer? Any other suggestions?

Nope, I'm doing Mata to Lamps myself. Who cares if it's "sideways" but brings in points. Mata/Haz might not feature heavily with a Final lurking.
