Frank Lampard bags a brace as Chelsea’s win at Villa leaves the hosts’ top-flight safety in doubt. Eden Hazard picks up a hamstring problem ahead of the Europa League final, while Christian Benteke sees red and is suspended for Villa’s vital Gameweek 38 trip to Wigan. The Latics have plenty to cheer about, however, after edging past City to clinch the FA Cup in yesterday evening’s Wembley showdown.

Lampard At The Double
Handed a rare outing in the Scout Picks, the veteran vindicated our decision by grabbing both goals to become Chelsea’s record goalscorer yesterday. Lampard had been a peripheral figure for the Blues recently, starting just one of the previous four league fixtures, though had served a reminder of his potential by climbing off the bench to notch a goal and assist in the Gameweek 35 home win over Swansea. Despite starting just 20 league games this season (with eight appearances also off the bench) Lampard has found the net on 15 occasions – putting that into perspective, it’s only four less than Juan Mata (10) and Eden Hazard (nine) combined. With Ramires now suspended for the Gameweek 38 home clash against Everton, his chances of retaining a starting role for Benitez’s final match in charge look strong and after yesterday’s display, the bandwagon is likely to pick up speed as Lampard looks to end the season with a flourish.

Benitez Calms The Rotation
Last Wednesday evening, Rafa Benitez had made just three changes for the XI to face Tottenham but in his post-match press conference after the 2-2 draw, the Chelsea boss went out of his way to discuss the effect of fatigue on his players, speaking of a need to “manage the squad”. With Eden Hazard subbed off with a calf problem in midweek and Victor Moses also causing concern, many felt Benitez’s no-risk policy would affect his line-up for Villa Park, with the midweek Europa League final against Benfica taking priority in order to boost his chances of leaving the club with silverware.

Instead, Benitez made just four changes to his side, with both Hazard and Moses named in the starting XI. Frustratingly for the 40,000+ FPL managers who sold the Belgian ahead of Saturday’s deadline, he then proceeded to supply both assists for Lampard’s strikes, taking his tally to nine goals and 16 assists for the season. Benitez’s decision to field Hazard for the full 90 minutes could potentially have backfired ahead of midweek, however; after the game, the Chelsea boss admitted Hazard has picked up a hamstring problem and will now require a scan, while John Terry is also a concern after being subbed off with an ankle injury late on.

Benteke To Miss Finale
Villa’s talisman notched his 19th goal of an incredible debut season but a couple of yellow cards in yesterday’s defeat could prove disastrous to his side’s chances of beating the drop. Benteke will sit out the Gameweek 38 trip to Wigan and with Paul Lambert’s side sitting on 40 points, it’s likely that they’ll need to get something from the DW encounter in order to clinch their top flight survival. Having also supplied four assists, Benteke has played a part in 23 of Villa’s 45 goals this term and had looked a viable captaincy contender for the showdown against Roberto Martinez’s men. Owned by over 16% of FPL managers, a mass exodus is on the cards over the next few days – Lambert may choose to hand Gabby Agbonlahor a role through the middle given his recent scoring exploits rather than turn to Darren Bent, though, in Fantasy terms, the likes of Daniel Sturridge looks an obvious replacement for Benteke ahead of Liverpool’s home clash with QPR.

Latics Clinch The Silverware
After losing at home to Swansea last Tuesday thanks to some disastrous defending, Roberto Martinez’s side were firm underdogs for yesterday’s FA Cup final. The return of Antolin Alcaraz proved crucial, however, as Wigan reverted to a back-three once again after a couple of brief flirtations with a four man defence. Emmerson Boyce joined the Paraguayan and Paul Scharner at the back, with Martinez opting for James McArthur and Roger Espinoza as the wing-backs. While Wigan still remain favourites to join QPR and Reading in the Championship next season, yesterday’s result will give Martinez’s side a huge psychological boost heading into Tuesday’s trip to Arsenal. With Shaun Maloney continuing to produce – supplying an assist for Ben Watson’s late winner – and Callum McManaman thriving on the right, the Latics could well put up a stern resistance at the Emirates and, providing they still have a shout of surviving after the Arsenal match, a home clash against Villa is likely to see them heavily backed as they attempt another unlikely bid for top-flight survival.

Full Strength City’s Wembley Flop
Perhaps the constant tinkering finally proved their undoing. After making eight changes for the midweek match against West Brom, Roberto Mancini named what many perceive as his strongest line-up for the Wembley clash with Wigan. Despite the likes of Sergio Aguero, Carlos Tevez, David Silva and Samir Nasri all starting, though, City failed to find a way past the Latics. Nasri and Tevez were hauled off on 55 minutes and 69 minutes respectively as Mancini unsuccessfully looked for a breakthrough strike. Given that City need just a single point over their last two matches with Reading and Norwich to secure second, Mancini’s selection policy over the last couple of games could well prove frustrating for Fantasy managers. Aguero and Silva owners will perhaps be concerned over the fact they both played the full 90 minutes, while Joe Hart’s owners may also be a little anxious – Costel Pantilimon had played every round in the cup before yesterday’s final but was mysteriously dropped to the bench despite Mancini previously stating he’d be his stopper at Wembley. It remains to be seen if Pantilimon figures again this season. Pablo Zabaleta will certainly miss the Reading clash; the Argentine’s red card means he will serve a one-match suspension, though will be available for the Gameweek 38 home encounter with the Canaries.

If they can keep it clean for a while it could be bad news for Walcott owners. Early goal and they're gonna feel those legs, they worked hard in the final and there's bound to be some sort of celebrating + short rest + small squad.

As a Pool supporter I know well who you were talking about 😉
Stevie's a class act alright for club and country. I thought injuries would have had him out most of this season but thankfully for the Reds he's been class. Scholes never really hit the Man U heights for England. But surely Gascoigne has a fair claim to best English midfielder, off the pitch one messed-up individual but an absolute genius with a football.

Stevie is just class everywhere. When I said english I wasnt referring to for england, just english players. Gascoinge was better then stevie on the ball, Fatty better at scoring, others better at other stuff but no one i have seen can do everything aswell as stevie can. He truly can play everywhere. Great leader, his shot is lethal, long passes, crunching tackles, always in the right place and sands up time and time again.
              He's just an absolute boss.

On Liverpool how do you reckon Sturridge will do long-term if he lasts long-term? I think he still has plenty to prove next season his atitude's still not great and Pool are his 4th club in 4 years.. Decision making is suspect, still a bit lazy, has nowhere near the workrate of Suarez. Looks good in games their coasting and/or with Suarez/Coutinho making him look good. No shortage of skill but needs to work harder.

Yeah, I like GJ. Pay attention to the game today, there's a real chance they'll play 3 at the back giving GJ a wing role. Could be gold for the last 2. You've got a relatively strong bench as well.

I think they'll be 4 at the back again but with Jonjo in the middle. I think they'll keep Hendo as the attacking prong and play Shelvey next to Lucas to see how he plays.

I think Jonjo doesn't have the qualities to play in the middle, I like him further up the field. Maybe 3 at the back, but 4-2-3-1 with Hendo alongside Lucas and Jonjo behind Sturr is possible.

That's a good point Mark. Played it for a few weeks and felt the scoring system is fairly predictable, if you study the ICT.

Maybe you should consider interviewing Lambie and inspire more people to play. Could be that its the "mob mentality" that stops people from joining.

Happy to bang the Sky drum. I don't thinks its as competitive yet as FPL, I've made some rookie mistakes like not changing captain and not realising you could make transfers mid-week.

I found the rules regarding the DGWs and SGWs a bit confusing too, having played FPL.

Are you an FFS member, Lambie? wondering how much did you use the features?

It's also things like rewarding tackles & passes that brings DMs into the reckoning. No-one gives the likes of Arteta a 2nd glance on FPL but he's a really good option on Sky.

Chris - you'll also get a bit of the Private League prize - we're winning that thanks to our top five and I think there's £2.5 on offer. I'm more than happy to dish that out to the top five if Sky will contact them on our behalf. Anyway, can you drop me a mail at mark@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk so i can be sure that I have your address for this and perhaps an interview post-season.

Although it wasn't his fault that we hired him, it was his fault that he said the "plastic fans" comment. That's the root cause of the hatred. While I will still don't like him, I have some respect for him. He had to come into a difficult situation and possibly gave it his best shot.

That said, Jose couldn't come any sooner!

I've been trying to back him somewhat, considering the situation. He's a decent manager, but I don't think he's a good fit for Chelsea. And yes, I agree, many fans have reacted wrong to his hiring. It's not like we were flush with choices when firing RDM in the middle of the season.

I agree he isn't the ideal Chelsea manager but you think the bitter ones would just accept it for the good of the team and see where it takes them in the short term. If you have an owner who can't stop sacking managers you are going to be left with slim pickings in some situations.

Yeah, that would be the "logical" thing to do. But it's a game of emotions, and Benitez was never the biggest friend of Chelsea at Liverpool so it's tough to swallow.

I think it was a disgrace how the fans treated him. It wasn't his fault they sacked RDM and he's an experienced manager who's done a pretty good job in the end without any support from the fans. There's never be sustained success at Chelsea because they're too trigger happy.

Hm well, I was totally against the appointment. And still, I don't like him.
Although I don't like him as the manager, but I wouldn't chant "Rafa-out' in the stadium. What done is done, chanting that will totally bring the team's momentum down.
But to be honest, it's not totally his fault too. Why sack RDM at the first place?
I am not happy with his decision to rest 2 first team CBs against Villa who has been scoring for fun.

Mr Interim, thank you, your job is done. Now, Mourinho, you're welcome. 😆

I nominate a few more entries - Scholes retirement, Loss to Chelsea at OT, Bale rare blank.

    Doing Telegraph game
protecting a lead of only 3 points and got Benteke! Only one transfer left. Havent got RVP so do i ship Mata out to get RVP games today and next Sun (would leave a non playing Benteke in my team) ortransfer BBenteke for Sturridge who has 2 games to play but risk not having RVP. Ive already got Coutinho.

I wouldn't keep a non active striker. Benteke > Sturridge or Carroll

You mentioned shipping Mata for RVP. Is Mata not listed as a midfielder?

You cannot ship Mata out for RVP with only one transfer left. That's the frustrating part of playing games with fixed number of transfers. I had to do Suarez to Tevez with my last TFF transfer while I had planned to do Mata to Bale but didn't want to keep a non-playing striker.

      Benteke to Sturridge

Cardiff need a better centre back and a holding mid.

Like The Mentalist says less transfers, try keeping Wildcard tiil March. Player wise Coleman if he stays at Everton and classed as a defender. Lukaku if he's nailed-on wherever. Cheap attacking mid from promoted team. Will keep an eye out to see if any PL club buys McCarthy or Federici, 2 good 2nd keeper picks.

One decision I'll be taking a lot of time over next season is the keepers and defence. If there's one thing I've learned its that you can always find a more important transfer unless they get injured. Over the course of a season you can gain masses of points from having a slightly better back 4 to your rivals

Exactly, I struggle to find transfers for them but they shouldn't be ignored, it can have a huge impact in the long-term. You need to do your 'house-keeping' once in a while.

Doing house-keeping might also keep you from "wasting" transfers on transferring a good prospect for another good prospect.

Yep, very true. So often you get a Gorkss stranded on your bench, flagged up or inactive and contributing nothing. Addressing these early seems a good policy but, like you say, there's often other priorities.

We'll I'd definitely wait till after the final in midweek on Luiz. Could be worth considering if Sturridge is a mini-league diff for you and you would turn to him for GW38 captain at home to QPR.

It's my ML semi final, massive game, should be live on Sky. Please get your crystal balls out, folks. Which team will win ...

Him: Foster, Mertesacker, Jagielka, Fellaini, Johnson, Sturridge, Podolski (c)

    Or

Me: Sagna, Kompany, Demel, Coutinho, Walcott, Kone, RVP (c)

Mmm...in the balance. It's all about Podolski - that's a big risk. I'd worry about Sturridge vs Fulham and Fellaini. I'd say he's the favourite but the captain could easily paper the cracks for you.
