Roberto Mancini is sacked by City after the weekend FA Cup final defeat by Wigan. Jack Wilshere requires “minor surgery” on his ankle, Lukas Fabianski is available for the Gunners home clash with the Latics this evening, reports suggest Eden Hazard is struggling with a hamstring problem ahead of Chelsea’s Europa League final against Benfica, while Daniel Sturridge lauds the recent displays of Philippe Coutinho after Liverpool’s thrashing of Fulham:

It turns out the rumours were true, then. With two games left of the season, City confirmed the sacking of Roberto Mancini late last night after Saturday’s Wembley loss to Wigan leaves the club without silverware for the campaign. With a trip to Reading and home clash against Norwich still on their agenda, City’s upcoming pair of fixtures certainly offers plenty opportunity for Fantasy returns – while many had expected Mancini to make several changes for this evening’s game at the Madejski, it’s now down to assistant boss Bryan Kidd to select the XI for tonight and Sunday’s visit of the Canaries.

Indeed, with the club requiring just one point over the remaining games to clinch second spot behind United, the theory was that Mancini would hand many of his fringe players a chance to impress – now, Kidd may decide to use the platform to impress the club’s owners and roll out the big guns as he looks to save his own job. With City, United and Chelsea all set for a change of manager in the following campaign, then, we’re set for a fascinating summer of transfer activity as the squads reinvest. While some Fantasy managers may look upon the changes with a little trepidation, there’s no doubt the constant rotation worries that blighted Mancini and Rafa Benitez’s line-ups won’t be missed.

Arsene Wenger has confirmed Lukas Fabianksi is back in the Arsenal squad for this evening’s crucial home game with Wigan. Yesterday’s press conference also saw the Gunners boss indicate he expects Kieran Gibbs to return after the left-back missed out with a calf complaint against QPR, while Wenger also discussed the reason behind Lukas Podolski’s restricted game time this term. The German international – who is favourite to continue in the central role as Olivier Giroud serves the last of a three match suspension – has managed the full 90 minutes just once since arriving from FC Cologne last summer and has been a peripheral figure in the first-team over the last couple of month. Wenger cited the mid-winter Bundesliga break as a reason for Podolski’s fatigue in his debut season at the Emirates:

“He had a good start [to the season], a very strong start. After that, he suffered a little bit physically and mentally because in Germany they have a break in mid-season. We have seen with many German players that when they come in for the first season, mentally they suffer a little bit. Now he has recovered and is getting stronger again. On the flanks is the most demanding position. Physically, especially in England, it’s very tough. He’s a striker. Many times we were in a position where we were in a winning position in the final 20 minutes and then I take a bit more of a guarantee defensively and take him out of the team sometimes.”

Wenger also revealed Jack Wilshere will undergo an operation to remove a pin in his ankle over the next few days. The midfielder was sidelined in March with a problem but his manager went to great lengths to assure the club’s official website that the procedure has been planned:

“Jack will have small, mild surgery. It is a very small, small, small one. It will not be a problem. He will need very minor surgery, but we manage that as far as we can until the end of the season. At the moment, we use him only in games when I feel he is really needed.”

Unconfirmed reports in the Mirror suggest that Eden Hazard is struggling to overcome a hamstring problem in time for Chelsea’s Europa League final with Benfica tomorrow evening. The Belgian sustained the injury in Saturday’s win at Villa and, having only just recovered from a calf complaint, is handing Rafa Benitez selection worries ahead of the showdown with the Portuguese club. Chelsea have yet to officially comment on the situation, however, though a possible absence would cause concern for Hazard’s owners ahead of Sunday’s home clash with Everton as Benitez looks to nail down a third place finish. Over 6,000 FPL managers have already drafted Hazard out this week, with a similar amount transferring in Frank Lampard after the latter’s double at Villa Park on Saturday lunchtime – only Philippe Coutinho (9,000) and Theo Walcott (8,000) have proven more popular thus far.

Hazard has been listed in the 25-man squad for tomorrow’s encounter, though the fact that Demba Ba has also been included by Benitez -despite being cup-tied for the match – doesn’t really shed any light on the situation.

Daniel Sturridge has heaped praise on Philippe Coutinho after the pair ran riot in Liverpool’s 3-1 win over Fulham last Sunday. Sturridge bagged a hat-trick, while the Brazilian picked up a couple of FPL assists for his display at the Cottage and the former Chelsea forward spoke of their flourishing understanding:

“It’s fantastic to be playing with someone of his calibre. It’s good to have somebody around who is hungry. He has a lot to prove just like I have. We have both come from big clubs where we haven’t had an opportunity to play week in week out. We are both hungry to show everybody what we are capable of doing. I can’t praise him highly enough for what he’s shown. It’s very difficult to do what he has done in such a short space of time. I want to say thanks to Philippe because he has made my job very easy. He has been very unselfish. He has put me in many times and it’s just fantastic to work with him.”

Certainly, both have made a significant impact since arriving in the winter transfer window and look canny acquisitions by Brendan Rodgers. While many had assumed Liverpool would toil after Steven Gerrard joined Luis Suarez on the sidelines last week, the two new boys wreaked havoc, with Coutinho handed a role behind Sturridge in a 3-5-1-1 for the first 45 minutes before Rodgers changed to a more familiar formation. Already, an incredible 48,000+ FPL managers have snapped up Sturridge of the Gameweek 38 home clash against QPR – with five goals, an assist and five bonus points (or 33 points) in three games since Suarez has been suspended, he looks set to be handed the armband by significant numbers for the final day of the season. As mentioned above, Coutinho has also proven popular and is second only to his Anfield team mate for transfers in this Gameweek.

What are people thinking for this week's captain?

I've owned Aguero 3 times this season. On those 3 occasions his point hauls have been: 1, 1 (c), 2.

    That chump OWES me.

I love how we all do this...either someone has scored 10 games in a row, hence they must score again, or they haven't scored for 10 games...hence they must score in the next one.

I'd normally do Bale but looking at the guys around me in the Japan league Sturridge is the differential.

You could have 5m or more in the bank every week from GW1.

I bet, if you really thought about it, you could put together a great squad for much less than 100m.

But we all make squads of 99.9m in GW1 because we can.

93% of Real Madrid fans vote they want Bale over Neymar.

And here i was thinking he was only really probably revered in Britain. After this i think he might actually be rated as the 3rd best player in the World - even though he's not.

He will get there because of his age but he's still raw imo. That outlines how good he is if he can still be considered raw whilst doing as well as he has been. The free-role, or behind the striker role is still new to him and he has a lot to learn. The pace he's learning it at is happening as quickly as it did with Ronaldo so signs are promising.

Reus is arguable. He definately has a better footballing brain but Bale has more explosiveness and Reus didn't really improve much after going to Dortmund, like Bale, he needs to prove he can keep consistancy over a few seasons. I'd rather Bale at the moment.

Gotze arguable aswell because they are such different players, being as there are more players around like Gotze, and so few like Bale, i'd take Bale.

Lewandowski? Sorry mate, but no chance.

        Falcao. Yes.

the 'best player in the world' can only be defined in terms of individual impact and to say xavi or even iniesta are close to bale at the moment in that respect is wrong. xavi is obviously much better at what he does but simply can't be considered in the same bracket.

very fashionable to talk about dortmund's players but if bale were in their team he'd dominate it as well.

Lots of posts about Mancini this morning and the fact that he has been sacked for not winning anything. I disagree...his major problem as a manager is his man management and has it's roots in how he handeled the Teves business last year as well as various major management faux pas's since. He was sacked because they didn't win a trophy AND because he's a bad man manager. The body language at City throughout the season tells us all we need to know.

I suspect so....I commented earlier that he reminds me of Dalglish in that respect...It's no crime not be as good a man manager as Fergie or Moyes and the like, but it does mean wherever he manages is limited in time.....I think Mourinho realises he himself get's too close to his players but has enough about him to move on...hasn't worked so well at Real though as he's had problems on that score with his players this time.

Do you really think he is that bad of a man manager? I wounder how others would have coped with Tevez and Bala..

The fact he brought Tevez back in and played a key part in winning the title last year shows that he can get whats best for the team done.

Also with such a big squad and his rotation policy how many players came out with a problem about it. Not as many as you think i bet.

I think he gets an unfair wrap when it comes to man managment. When Walcott or Podolski say the need to play up front you don't hear people saying Wegner is a poor man manager. If the same thing happens at City Mancini gets the blame.

He bought those players so he was part of the problem...Fergie (and i'm no Man united fan) has always been aware of buying the odd bad apple in terms of unity...it's part of their ongoing success...Absolutely no way would Teves have ever played again for Fergie after he cleared off. As Potatoace says i'm sure much will come out but for anybody whi looks at body language it was obvious there was major problems going on there...

I don't think he bought all those players and definatly not Tevez. Tevez was at fault but if Mancini did not bring him back in last year they would not have won the league and I think that. I think you can only say thats good about the manager.

Sitting on a high horse, not bringing him back and not winning the league would point to a bad manager.

Yeah but he spent half the season getting all sorts of horrible cancer treatments 1,000's of miles away. Before he got ill, Barca broke all sorts of records for most wins and goals...
          Surely not.

I agree but from what he is saying it looks like he doesn't plan on leaving. However, the issue with Barcelona (I am a fan myself) is that they can play the wonderful passing game in La Liga but when they encounter tough players in Europe who can bully them around they can do nothing about it. Watching Bayern vs Barca was like watching fully grown men playing against young teenagers, the Barcelona players had no physical presence. You can even see it in La Liga when a striker like Llorente, who is strong but also very good technically, is the most feared striker by the likes of Pique purely because he is strong. Barcelona need to change the game now, they have 1 method of playing and that's it. If a team can stop that method, they're done for (like Celtic managed to do.)

I do think there is something missing but have had a devil of a time pinpointing it. I possibly think that it may run deeper than Tito. At the end of his time there we could see that some teams had managed to cop on to Pep's strategy (Chelsea for example.) This season more teams have copped on to it in Europe (Celtic, Bayern etc.) and Barcelona haven't any other way of playing, neither Pep nor Tito have taught them a different strategy. It didn't matter as much in La Liga because most of them would refuse to play like that but it only takes 1 team, say Madrid under a new manager, to start playing like that and then Barcelona are in big trouble. Personally, unless there is a lot of luck, I can't see Barcelona succeeding in Europe unless they have back up tactics.

I think Klopp is brilliant for Dortmund (I'm very biased as I've been supporting Dortmund for years.) but his heart currently lies in Dortmund. I would be very very shocked if he moved. It is certainly a tough thing to judge, they need someone who can bring in a few talented, Spanish style players that can also take a few knocks so they can succeed in Europe. For a long time I've wanted Barca to sign Llorente, looks like they won't and I think it's a tremendous missed opportunity. Players like Michu etc. You don't have to play them every game but they give you another layer of playing when things get physical.

Good points. The more teams get used to playing against Barca the more need there is for a counter strategy.

If Gardner is put is in a defender slot and is under 5.5, he will be te first name on my team sheet!

I like Ruddy. After last night's play-off tho, if Palace make the promotion, Speroni looks a magnificent keeper and should be a budget option

oh yeah, was he bad?? I've never noticed him before, but he seems to have had plenty of 'Player of the Year' awards with Palace . . . do tell?

Ok - we'll have to wait n see if he's found some form then . . . and also there's the little matter of Watford first, who also have an interesting keeper incedently

Yes, but he should play. He's at a great level already, and he should be relatively cheap.

Butland could be very interesting too. If he was priced as the Stoke reserve then Bego left for a bigger club, he would be the first name on my teamsheet.
