Our final Digest piece of the 2012/13 campaign highlights the return to form of the West Ham skipper and his former Newcastle sidekick, wonders whether the Canaries could offer us something extra in attack next time out and underlines just how crucial the current bonus system proved to be, with the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) crown decided by the finest of margins.

The Player

Kevin Nolan will no doubt remain on Fantasy radars after ending the season in some style. The Hammers captain took advantage of a porous Reading side that had conceded in every road trip of 2012/13 by hitting a hat-trick in a 4-2 home win for Sam Allardyce’s side – having finished the campaign with 10 goals, he has now delivered double figures in each of his last four seasons for Newcastle and West Ham, a clear sign of his consistency.

While a total of 149 points saw him finish top Fantasy Premier League (FPL) scorer for Allardyce’s side, and 11th in the midfield standings, Nolan’s season was frustrating in the main. An instant impact delivered five goals, a pair of assists and seven bonus points by Gameweek 11 as his initial priced rose from 6.0 to 6.9 but Nolan then scored just two more times in 23 appearances before his weekend return to form.

As the season drew to a close, however, his partnership with Andy Carroll proved beneficial to both – particularly at home. Over the final seven home games of his loan spell, Carroll produced attacking returns six times, with four goals, four assists and six bonus points earning him 46 points, while Nolan registered 35 points in the last three in front of his own fans, courtesy of four goals and eight bonus points.

Clearly, while Allardyce needs to address a scoring record that saw his side net a mere 11 times on the road all season – the poorest attack in the Premier League – his side’s survival will depend on their Upton Park form. Snapping up Carroll on a permanent deal not only looks crucial to his side’s chances, it could well be key to how we assess Nolan’s impact for the campaign ahead.

The Team

Having faltered in front of goal for most of the season, Norwich finished with a real flourish by handing City their second home defeat of 2012/13. The Canaries sealed their survival the previous week with a 4-0 hammering of West Brom and followed that up with an unexpected 3-2 triumph at the Etihad – given they have scored seven goals in the nine games previous to Gameweek 37, the upturn in attacking points was hugely unexpected.

Certainly, from an offensive perspective, Robert Snodgrass was the only real positive in Chris Hughton’s first term in charge at Carrow Road. His arrival from Leeds last summer proved a masterstroke by the Canaries boss as Snodgrass racked up six goals, nine assists and 23 bonus points – a total of 152 points was over 30 points more than any team mate but Norwich’s finish will perhaps afford reason for optimism next time round.

The recent return from injury of Anthony Pilkington was also key for the run in – offering a natural width on the left flank, his recovery from a hamstring problem allowed Snodgrass to return to the right flank in Hughton’s 4-4-1-1, with Wes Hoolahan tucked in behind Grant Holt. Pilkington was amongst the goals at the Etihad, serving a belated reminder of the attacking potential that saw him score in four home fixtures in five between Gameweeks 12 and 20 earlier in the campaign. Grant Holt also ended the season on a high. With 35 Gameweeks gone, he’d found the net a mere five times but scored in each of his last three, notching 24 points over that trio of fixtures.

With new signing Ricky Van Wolfswinkel arriving from Sporting Lisbon this summer and looking to add extra bite to the attack, Hughton will be hoping to roll out a more expressive side next time round. Having found his footing in his first season as a top-flight manager, the Canaries boss will be hoping to push on come next August and, as his acquisition of Snodgrass has shown, could potentially offer Fantasy managers solid, mid-price options for our 15 man squads in the season ahead.

The Talking Point

While Sunday failed to deliver the nerve shredding Premier League drama of seasons past, in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game things went right to the wire. With just two points separating the top two prior to the arrival of the bonus points, their award was to prove crucial and it was the five points allocated to both Philippe Coutinho and Jose Enrique that were decisive.

While Coutinho’s two points were predictable enough, Enrique gained the maximum thanks to a clean sheet and two goal-bound efforts. There can be no complaints: such a result was consistent with previous verdicts from the EA Sports Player Performance Index but perhaps the significance of the award was unfortunate, given that the bonus points remain a contentious issue in a game which is otherwise accepted as rock solid.

It remains to be seen if this area will be revisited by the FPL over the summer months. Meanwhile, with just three points separating the top two, it underlines the narrow margins involved. Indeed, two transfer hits split the top four; food for thought the next time those double Gameweeks tempt the transfer trigger finger.

Summer in America - time to retrain myself to say 'Soccer' instead of 'Football, 'Standings' instead of 'Table,' and 'Schedule' instead of 'Fixtures.'

      :D.

both 'standings' and 'table' are used in the U.S. and aren't exact synonyms of each other. and i'm pretty sure we use both 'schedule' and 'fixtures' here as well with slightly different uses

Maybe out on the West Coast. Here in the East I don't know anyone who doesn't follow foreign soccer who uses those terms. Even Fox Soccer Channel which caters to Premier League fans publishes Premier League 'Standings.'

+1. but no way that kind of team will ever exist. Firstly, most people will load up DGW1 players, especially if it's a big team like Chelsea tha has favourable fixtures. Secondly, who would have thought Snoddy would be such a differential? just my 2 cents.

Snoddy was a popular FFS bandwagon before GW1. So was a lot of the rest of the team. It is also possible that some casuals were unaware of the DGW. As far as I can tell that team was very plausible.

oh, really. then i can see a slim possibility for such team to be considered "doable". yep, the usual suspects are there (bale, RVP, suarez, baines, evra, hart, etc.) but factor in hype on new players (hazard over 'fatigued' mata) and expected/unexpected OOPs (afro/michu), it'l very hard to come out with a dead team that successful.

It doesn't have hart or evra. Michu had plenty of supporters on these boards and because Mata was good last year he was sought after at least by the casuals. Afro was a slight long shot perhaps but he may have been playing in an advanced position in pre-season although I'm not sure. But yes it would have been very hard to come up with that side and not make any transfers all season 😉

Hmm its not a bad idea. It would probably only be best if just a small number do it though. Its kinda bad form to create a second team.

what's so bad about creating a second team? many did it for the bottom 7 league. I don't see how this is any different

Exactly. You wanted to get Nolan, but didn't have the guts to listen to your gut.

My gut told me Nolan, and it was the last week of the season, so I said feck it, and got Nolan over Coutinho, when every man and his dog told me otherwise.

              Guilty your honor.

Promise me next season you will email me. Advice and good common sense often get lost here.

It was easier for you though....top 1k secured....holder of a couple of FPL titles...I was still fighting for a ML and best ever ranked.

              I got sidetracked.

              Sorry.

No, but an extra 9pts would have prob put me below 5k. Had I also kept (c) on Bale I might have dipped under 4k.

Water under the bridge. More p offed with how many times i burned my fingers with Mr Nolan.(Gw 1,3 & 38) Cost me megga pts and over the season it would have made a biig difference.

Did win $120 in 2xML's. So not all bad,

Ouch. We all have our sad stories. I need to stop going on about mine.

I'm relieved that I'm still doing ok with my limited knowledge of football to hopefully be in contention for a 1-5k finish most seasons. Even with FPL points system being changed last season.

Just want to avoid a "mare" like TM had this season.

i know, i know! i've been trying to convince ENR that we should share the general outline/idea now but he wants to keep it all under wraps until we go live.

all I can tell you for now is that it'll be a team based game, it'll be football related, and it won't have to do with fantasy football

      Well done JD.

8 kg's in less then a month! 😯 I'm assuming it's without exercise? You must be starving yourself or you lived a hell of a unhealthy life previously...

I always wanted to ask, are you confident to keep this up/maintain it in future? Prob the most diff part.

No I'm going to the gym most work days at lunch time... I am doing less as energy levels are down but still doing a little cardio and light weights.... My stomach is feeling very empty, although I have no hunger pains... My dreams now consist of me cooking various different dishes 🙂

The next four days I will probably lose about another 1.5 KG and I want to be walking around at about 80 KG, so I will have a little weight to gain... It is going to be tough but will just exercise more and burn any big meal off...

From feb until end of April I lost 6 KG's and was drinking loads and eating well... just less portions

Been reflecting on the season: weeks 29-33 killed me off. 🙁

    My penny's worth:

    1. Standards are getting higher and making the top 1k is no longer a formality.
    2. Stick to my game plan (1 exp defender with 2/4 uber rotation)
    3. Pride is a killer. Sometimes you have got to admit you are wrong and go ahead with the trade you've been telling others not to do.

    Your thoughts.

I know you're the king of uber but I quite like spending some money on defence. Biggest lesson I've learned is to stick with form players even if they have a bad fixture. That and try to take hits only to replace injured or suspended big hitters and for dgws.

Lets try again. Reply to Jafa.

Maintaining focus for a whole year is a tough tough job. Which is why what the likes of Triggerlips can do is admirable. He has got patience, doesn't loose his cool and marches on year on year..This was the season for obvious transfers and sticking to your big guns. The moment i started getting bored and gambled left, right and centre, my rank came down. I got lucky with the start i had, otherwise it was a top 5k season for me i reckon. Even 10k maybe.

You really have to be patient and once the first 5 gw's are out of the way, stick to the players you have identified. And be patient, because the moment you remove them, a big haul will come (Sturridge, Suarez, Cazorla).

You have to catch those big hauls. I will try being slightly more conservative this season but in a whole season, i will have atleast 5-10 moments of madness you know where you just say feck it, lets do it. Or when you make an angry transfer after a bad gw on a Sat night..

agreed on all these points. though sometimes you need to remove the players you have identified. the ones that stuck with berbatov for too long this season got punished

also your punts on giroud worked out quite well for you 😀

No you just have to be consistent. A top 10k rank is achievable for everyone on this site if you don't go hit-crazy or punt-wild.

@LR don't take this the wrong way as you had an incredible season but I think the fate many suffered when they got to the top 100 or so was the urge to gamble too much. It seems counter intuitive somehow but keeping many of the template players was the best way to stay up there even to continue rising. You have to fight the urge to make drastic changes in order to climb further as it doesn't seem to work like that.

Mind you that was this season, no doubt other seasons have worked differently. It just seemed to me that a few people who took the differential approach ended up falling back down the overall league as a result.

yeah it's because those at the top are less likely to change as they want to stay ahead. and if you go for differentials you have to get them spot on which can be tough. and if not, the template players will end up punishing you

some of both i reckon. some is luck. some is timing. and I think some is taking less hits. if you noticed, many of us normal/lesser folks took 8 and 12pt hits for the dgws but most at the top only used ft's or took a 4pter at most

It's at the very least 50% luck and 50% planning I would say. Always keeping an eye on next 6 or so fixtures when bringing in players is very important and not taking too many risks with captains or hits is part of the skill but luck is still a massive factor IMO.

as soon i changed approach and get defenders in my rank start falling

the biggest mistake was to get rid of RVP and i simply did that cause i changed strategy after winter wc

Agreed. But i had decided by then when i was around the 50 Mark that i was going to go all or nothing. But my transfers at that point were silly, to say the least.

I sold RVP and Coutinho for Silva and Tevez and i already had Kun.

And i got in Morisson for a hit that week as well, without ever playing him.

      Silly. Silly. Silly.

I agree with you though, got to try holding my cool more. Temperament has a role in this game.

Larerizer , we were opposite ends of the spectrum , you got in top 100 and went differential crazy , while i went hyper defensive , last five weeks i moved between 39th and 35th and that included a couple of doubles.
You were all over the place , but i always had the feeling that one big week and you would of been right in there , just didnt happen for you

Problem is there only 35 people to overtake and 2.5m trying to overtake you

Agreed. Like i said i went the 'all in' approach. I bet on city and they just didn't come through. It was frustrating because they had a LOT of chances.

Always a learning though innit, and like i mentioned earlier, i am going to try holding my cool like you do, because your history doesn't lie. Just, problem is that is not my nature.

only bad thing wich i did this season are C choices

for example, you all know that Suarez is my favorite player so i get him in for 4pts hit and C him in away game against UTD

majorty of people just C RVP most of the games and i didnt want have that approach so my rank suffer

can't belive that Donkey has been my C as well

next season i wont try be smartass with C choices and i'll try play without emotions (not a RVP fan and hate when he scores) and by doing that i'll defeinitly improve my this year rank

i dont know , for some reason i just hate him

he is brilliant footballer but in my opinion the most overrated player on planet

when it comes to true pressure RVP sucks

he proved that numerous of times in UCL games and in euro and world championship with holand

shame that he won thropy this year 🙁

that was one of my worst calls of the season as well

early in season i think that i am one of the first who get him in

My capt choices used to be really poor , i fixed it by just picking the top of the poll (nearly all time) they generally good option, and even if they fail it not too damaging as others have same choice

This is interesting. If you go to see, thats where the majority of the top 10 killed it though. Catching the odd Bale/Fellaini hat trick..

ah but thats the luck part again , if thousands try those differentials a few will come good just by law of averages.
And because they came good they are the teams you look at.

Im sure if you go back over the seasons then the top rated choice would of been the best choice , it would beat someone who tried to pick and choose, in the long run

Interesting. So i'm saying if top choice is Sturridge vs. QPR, and you have a Bale playing West Ham, go for it. Not an attrocious gamble.

Some weeks there is no standout or a false favourite., those are the weeks to take a slight chance

Lets take the week just gone . Sturridge was about 10% clear of Bale , yet the poll was early in the week , immediatly following a Sturridge hattrick , Bale closed the gap a little as the week went on , if the poll had started friday he probably would of been top
This not hindsight , i captained Bale and made this very point before the deadline last week

If i had to give one piece of advice it would be to avoid short term moves,. Only bring someone in if you are happy to keep them , because when the injuries pile up those people yo bought for the short term are very hard to get rid of

I'm going to insist on you listening to your gut next season. And also, another thing i noticed. I mean its not in my place to give you advice, but earlier in the season you had identified a lot of good players to switch 8-10 weeks down the line. Focus on 6 weeks and 6 weeks only..
