After edging out Blackpool in the 2011/12 Championship play-off final, Sam Allardyce turned to a familiar face as West Ham made their way back into the top flight. With former number one Rob Green heading off to Loftus Road, Allardyce raided former club Bolton for the services of Jussi Jaaskelainen in what has proven an inspired piece of business.

Reunited with his former Trotters boss, the Finnish international was one of only five players to manage every minute of the season gone by and his endeavours between the sticks were, at times, the difference between victory and defeat for the Hammers as Allardyce steered the club to a tenth place finish.

The Statistics

Starting the season with three clean sheets in the first four Gameweeks, Jaaskelainen’s cut-price potential was immediately apparent. Coming in at 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), he quickly picked up in price as Fantasy managers scrambled on board the bandwagon. The Hammers stopper managed just eight more clean sheets over the following 34 Gameweeks, including a testing spell which saw him keep out his opponents just once between Gameweeks 12 and 24 but it was Jaaskelainen’s propensity to rack up the save points that made him such a valuable Fantasy acquisition.

On as many as 26 occasions the West Ham number one earned at least one save point, as he ended the campaign with an incredible 156 saves – more than any other keeper in the game. Having racked up 144 points, he finished joint-second for goalkeepers along with Asmir Begovic and Petr Cech and was 21 points better off than Joey O’Brien as the most impressive defensive option at Upton Park. Furthermore, Jaaskelainen ended the campaign as the number one player for value in the FPL game, returning 27.7 points per pound, just enough to edge Southampton’s Rickie Lambert (27.5) into second.

While Jaaskelainen’s heroics were rarely rewarded by bonus points (just four all season), his consistency of performance and guaranteed game time were key to his popularity as over 19% of FPL managers ended the season with the Hammers man in their sides, the second more popular stopper in the game.

The Prospects

With both Allardyce and Jaaskelainen signing contract extensions in the last month or so after the club clinched their top-flight security, the Finnish stopper will no doubt continue to offer us a reliable first-choice option between the posts.

A trusted lieutenant of the Hammers boss, Jaaskelainen’s appeal is likely to be dented by a price hike across the Fantasy games next time out, however, with a rise to 5.5 looking the likeliest scenario in FPL. With the likes of Michel Vorm and Tim Krul potentially dropping in cost after underwhelming seasons at Swansea and Newcastle, and John Ruddy perhaps remaining a cut-price option due to his injury-blighted campaign at Norwich, Jaaskelainen faces a real struggle to retain our FPL interest. Jaaskelainen would need to see more reward from the bonus system, whilst, in other Fantasy games, look to earn points for saves – something that has been lacking from the Sky Sports effort this term.

Even if Jaaskelainen offers the same level of clean sheet and save point returns, a jump in price would see his value take a significant drop and with the promoted sides also vying for our attention, the preferred tactic for cheap rotation keeper pairings in the FPL will make it difficult for the Finn to have the same sort of impact upon our Fantasy seasons next time round.

Never owned him personally but was always shocked by his point hauls. Can't believe the step he's made this year in comparison to his season at Bolton. Bogdan even kept him out a few games and that was saying something....pink and ginger never ever should have been put together.

Don't know if you're a fan, but check this out: http://i.imgur.com/nZKtI86.jpg

Cast lineup of the new X-Film film. Looks like the big boys will be back - Wolverine, Cyclops, Storm, old Professor X, and old Magneto.

Oh, and Christian Bale apparently released a statement saying he's willing to do the JLA film with Nolan and Henry Cavill. Orgasmic.

Never been a huge fan of the X-Men films. Wolverine is pretty awesome but they had some rubbish characters aswell. First Class was good though.

Bale is up for some JLA. This is great news.

Was a big fan of the comics and the TV series growing up. Love me some X-Men.

Yep, great news on Bale. The Man of Steel film will apparently have a teaser at the end regarding the JLA film, similar to what Marvel has been doing with their films.

So the new X-men film will be a little bit of both then?

Also, Nolan on the JLA film? Hasn't he always said that he would not be involved in any of the supernatural superhero-films? He's always aimed for the realistic view, had a change of heart?

The storyline of "Days of Future Past" involves time-travel hence the return of the old characters.

Nolan has taken over everything DC-related at Warner Bros. The maestro is here to stay.

best odds are with betfair at the moment at 1/12 so you'd make about £8.33 profit....

With Mourinho being such a loose cannon I'm not sure I'd risk that for that output, break downs in talks happen more often than you think in Manager switches, especially from people as demanding as José.

Rotating goalkeepers worked for the first 10-15 weeks for me. Then once De Gea was nailed he worked for ages, then Hart put in a nice final shift.

I think rotating cheap keepers is pretty essential at the beginning of a season as cash is needed so much more elsewhere. Cleanies are too unpredictable at the start so you're better off placing your faith in attacking points.

With Reading going down, boy I’ll certainly miss you Danny Guthrie. A GW 1 punt gave me 9 pts from you, after a tremendous free kick goal against Chelsea that Cech had no chance to get. You’ve been warming my bench nearly all season. Hope to see you again.

Just written this to a mate who doesn't play FPL but is interested:

    Skill vs luck.

My take on it is this. Firstly of the 2.6m participants, I reckon only about 1.5m are active throughout the season. The other million are casual players, dead teams (given up after a few poor GW’s) and peoples second teams (going for the weeks highest score etc).

There is a certain amount of skill (time & analysis) requireed to get into the top 100,000, as I reckon about 250,000 people take it seriously. After that there are two sets of luck involved:

    1. Transfers: These are used to improve your team week on week, whilst also introducing a few differentials (punts) that can help you climb the top echelons of the ladder. Where luck comes into this is, not having to ‘waste’ transfers on injured & suspended players but instead being able to concentrate on getting the form players with the favourable fixtures. I have seen examples of a team’s constantly fire fighting players who become unavailable. To me that is just plain unlucky, nothing to do with lack of skill (although you can obviously avoid injury prone players and those that like to bite).

    2. Captains: As this gives one player a double score each week, this choice can often add 20-30% plus to your overall GW score. There are only a handful of realistic captains’ choices each week - RVP, Bale, Suarez, Mata, Walcott etc. and not many deviate too far from these. Choosing the player who scores a hat-trick (or a decent score) is very much down to luck. I have been incredibly lucky this year with my choices, adding about 500pts to my score. The winner probably added around 600-700pts.

Perhaps the two places where skill does come into it:

    1. Knowing the rules & fixtures: This can add a significant advantage when it comes to double game weeks (where some players can play & score points twice) due to re-arranged fixtures and the likes. Similarly a team might miss a GW because of a re-arranged fixture, in which case players from that team all score zero – do you use a transfer to replace them? Or put them on your bench?

    2. Knowing the teams: Learning about formations, player rotations, penalty/free kick specialists, attacking defenders involves a certain degree of dedication. Also knowing which players will be unavailable due to things like African Cup of Nations or accumulation of yellow cards (five means they miss a match, ten means they miss two etc).

This is my third season on the official game and the first I’ve concentrated on from start to finish. 2010/11 I did it for fun with mates and was ranked 346,616, 2011/12 I started taking it seriously half way through, when I needed to beat my closest rival, and was ranked 43,895.

In summary, I reckon a decent amount of effort gets you into the top 100,000 and then luck takes over. A bit like city bankers or gamblers – get some basic knowledge of what’s going on and then the lucky ones prosper.

    Thoughts?

Think Skill outweighs Luck by a far way. Trigger has 3 top 1K ranks in a row.

Odds are that statistically some people are bound to be more lucky than others.

Not taking anything away from Trigger and of course you can create your own luck.

But in theory if it was mainly down to skill and you work the same or harder each season, your rank should always improve. For most people that is not the case. Therefore I believe it's mainly down to luck (once you're into the top 100K)

5th season for me & my worst. Didn't have many injuries, just didn't get the right players & was stubborn with others. Skill over Luck by heaps. I don't think Trigger is luckier than the rest of us either. Guess we will see next season where he finishes. I bet top 1K again.

Yeah, my thinking was that if Jaaskelainen got injured, sent off I would have a backup. When West Hams fixtures got harder i brought in Bego and then DDG at Christmas. Switched to Hart for the DGW on, worked out really well.

I voted for him, but agree his value will probably price him out of consideration next season. No point getting a goalkeeper out of the top 4 unless they are 4.5m or below.

Ruddy, Krul and Vorm all look like good potential rotators this season if they come in at 4.5m. Mignolet as well possibly, but I'm anticipating a 5-5.5m tag for him.

    This has probably already been discussed several times here, but I just realized that the runner up overall in fantasy lost this by having Lukaku on his bench;

    - The winner of Fantasy Premier League 2012/13 and his/her guest will be treated to a 7-night break in the United Kingdom and will experience VIP hospitality at TWO Barclays Premier League matches, visit a selection of major UK tourist attractions such as the Tower of London, Madame Tussauds and The Beatles Story in Liverpool.

    - Additionally, they’ll enjoy a private ride on the London Eye while sipping champagne, ride a speedboat down the Thames and experience unrivalled views across the capital from the top of Europe’s tallest building The Shard. Transfers to and from the UK and 7 nights’ accommodation is also included in the prize.

This lad won't get much sleep over the next days.

5.5m seems a little too much to spend on a keeper from the off. He's been a demon this year though, I'm disappointed I never had him. The must surely be better value in the promoted teams though.

I had Mignolet/Schwarzer from the start. It was ok for a bit. I got Begovic fairly early on but I was rotating him with Migs and benching the CS too often.

    Benteke/Lukaku/Lambert/Berbatov

Did you bring these players in because they had favourable fixtures or because they were performing well regardless?

I never owned Lambert all season due to having Puncheon but I had the other 3 at different times and it generally worked. Berbatov @ the Emirates being ones of the highlights.

I’m just trying to figure out what makes you hang on to a 3rd striker or sell him for a similarly priced player.

The problem I have with the 3rd striker is being patient.

Lukaku - i've never owned in FPL. I hope I do in 2014.
Lambchops- bought in gw 7...2;1;2;2;5...he then scored 9;2,8 after I sold him
Berba- bought in for Lambchops after his hatty vs Ars...held him for 2;2;2. ALSO SEE BELOW
Benteke-bought him for Rvp when villa played Reading. He scored 7;6;6;8. Then sold him for Berba for his DGW...2;2;1;2...then sold him for Sturridge for 2(Berba scored 8)

Like i said earlier in my previous reply to you, if the player/team is on form, then i have no problem bringing/holding onto these players. form over fixture to put it simple. however, out of those 4, benteke/berba would have a slight preference, jsut because of peno duties.

Repost for HVT - think he missed this.
    HVT B2BB – FALLOUT REVEALED
I took him under my wing, I mentored him all season and pre season for that matter, I told him not be afraid.
“But it’s too big a task Boss, I’m not man enough, those young fellas on the Scout are sharks,” he cried.
    Leave the SKY Game,
    make FPL your priority
Get a hard man grav, I said
Don’t take shit from anyone and pretend you have a job, they’ll soon respect you on the Scout and your rank will also soon improve, it’s how it works, I’ve been down this road many a time.

13 green arrows on the bounce followed for HVT along with a Simpli Special cup win, dizzying highs of top 5k rank, unprecedented success for a Rookie, even for a Rookie under my guidance. 😉

However it all changed, the Cup win got to him, he wouldn’t listen any more.
Boozy pre DGW trips to Manchester, panicky wildcard decisions and LUDICROUS punts on GARY O’Neill and VICTOR ANICHEBE ensued,
The work load was clearly too much, well for a rookie at least. 🙂
It was time to let go and concentrate on keeping my own team in the top 500 ( 355 btw ).
I advised HVT to do the same, …………he decided he knew best.
He lost his shot at the top 1k, blew our chances in the Doubles Tourney and NOW it’s my fault. 😯

The Veterans out there will understand my position, a judgement call, sure he’s got talent but now he’s come back to bite the hand that fed him. I gave him the reigns, I GAVE HIM HIS CHANCE DAMMIT and he only went and done a Ballotelli.
Maybe if I was the Mancini of FPL it could have worked but I’m the Fergie of FPL and I needed a Moyesy, he couldn’t deliver.
HVT was the Chosen One but he’s certainly not The Special One, lesson learned, the search for my eventual successor continues…………..

Has anyone worked out how many times you missed Jussi big hauls. didn't his biggest GW's come against sides he would probably be on the bench for? Thinking City @ home and a load of away games where if he was rotating with Bego we would have missed them as well. LIV, WBA, NOR, STK, NEW. Really frustrating player on this front as the casual just played him.

He kept 6 home clean sheets and 5 away. The overall difficulty of opponents he kept clean sheets against was broadly in line with the average (just fractionally harder). Not brilliant for rotation but not the worst.

I'm working on a clean sheet predictability analysis...

Still a work in progress - waiting to find out who the play off winners are to factor their data in (albeit from a different division) and need to properly crunch the numbers.

          A couple of early examples:

Arsenal kept 64% (9/14) of their clean sheets away from home but these were generally against 'easier' opponents.
Everton kept 64% (7/11) of their clean sheets at home but these were generally against 'harder' opponents.

Basically meaning Arsenal and Everton defenders shouldn't be benched (most people probably wouldn't anyway) but I'm hoping there may be similar points which point towards potentially rewarding rotations next season.

I'm running the numbers for each of the last 4 seasons to try to spot any trends too.

This will almost certainly come to nothing conclusive but I'm doing it anyway! 🙂

            Sounds impressive stuff.

My season ticker runs of previous season stats so if you need any help, I'm more than willing.

Are you taking into account failed to score stats? Swansea failed to score away from 10/19 times giving the opposition a 53% chance, then factor in the home defensive record? They also failed to score in 9 of 19 the year before.

So build a ticker of likely clean sheets based on fixture? That's one or two steps further than I'm at currently but it would be pretty cool...

Cheers Tommy, I'll post what I've got once I've finished my initial run through and it may be that I/you/we can build it out further after that.

That's what I trying to expand on. So far it takes into account the previous two season and calculates attacking potential home and away and CS potential home and away. For example away attacking potential uses goals (scored per game * Random user preference value) + Failed to score * negative random user preference value) * relevance on that seasons data. then the ticker itself just does a simple home team CS potential - away attacking potential to give you a figure.

What I'm struggling with is I need to factor in a top 6 weight to working.

Once it's done, I'm going to let anyone have it from my blog 🙂

Keep me posted on that, Windypops. Might want to factor in error rates for teams. Arsenal, for example, make lots of errors that spoil otherwise clean sheets but that's much less predictable than other teams.

Its one of the reasons I got Demel in. Everytime I played Jussi I benched Demel, everytime I played Bego I played Demel. Wierdly it worked out that I got all of Demel's surprise hauls so didn't mind about missing Jussi's. Bego did a little better towards the end. Bego/Jussi was still one of the great gk rotation combos in recent years.

I seem to remember you pulling a panicky 2am wildcard decision that cost the Aussies dearly!!

Of the big hitting defenders which one would you like to have for the start of the season?

I won't get Baines but the best "Dead Team" possible has him, Mert & O'Brien in it. Played every minute & top scoring defender. Chelsea defender GW1 at least.
