Ten matches into the previous campaign, Theo Walcott had fallen far from most Fantasy radars. Having started Arsenal’s opening day fixture against Sunderland, the winger was then afforded seven second-half sub appearances in the following nine Gameweeks as Arsene Wenger set about restructuring his side after the departure of Robin Van Persie to Manchester United:

After an impressive 2011/12, Walcott had looked a real contender for our five man midfields prior to the start of last term. Finally shedding the streak of inconsistency that all too often plagued his displays, the Gunners winger was slapped with a premium price tag across the Fantasy games and, having racked up 169 points in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, kicked off the campaign costing us 9.0.

The Statistics

From Gameweek 11 onwards, however, Walcott was a nailed-on regular. With Wenger desperate for the winger to sign a new contract, he became a first-team fixture once again and started 23 of the club’s final 28 fixtures. While Walcott’s continued requests for a move to the lone forward role may have ultimately fallen on deaf ears, his attacking contribution from the Arsenal right more than atoned for his midfield berth.

Despite playing almost 500 minutes less than the previous season, Walcott produced more goals (14 to eight), assists (13 to 11) and bonus points (23 to 19) as he stepped up another level for the Gunners. Finishing the season on 194 points, he registered his best ever FPL total and ended the campaign in sixth spot in the overall standings, fourth for midfielders behind Gareth Bale, Juan Mata and team mate Santi Cazorla.

The Prospects

He may have ended 11 points worse off than Cazorla last time out, but further analysis of the duo’s statistics suggest that, with a full season’s game time, Walcott is most likely set to improve further next time out. In terms of consistency, he delivered attacking returns in 16 of his 24 starts (66.6%) compared to Cazorla’s 15 hauls in 37 starts (40.5%) – while the Spaniard is capable of hugely explosive hauls, he looks set to test our patience far more often than Walcott.

Indeed, Walcott was second top midfielder for points per game (6.1), despite eight of his 32 appearances coming from the bench – boiled down further, he averaged 7.0 points per start; a hugely impressive statistic that highlights his potential for next time out.

Given that six of the overall top eight in the FPL game were classified as midfielders in 2012/13, Fantasy managers will have a tricky time balancing our budgets as we look to target the big hitters. Bale, Mata, Eden Hazard, Cazorla and Walcott look set to be the five costliest options across the Fantasy games, with a price tag of 10.0+ inevitable in FPL. While Bale will undoubtedly be the most expensive of the quintet, Walcott’s above-mentioned averages could see him outscore all bar the Tottenham man over the course of the season, with a cost in the region of 10.0 to 10.5 looking likely for the Gunners winger.

After an indifferent start to 2012/13, the Gunners’ last few months also suggest they could be a force to be reckoned with next time out. As the campaign unfolded, Wenger’s side finally gelled as a unit and with less reliance on Van Persie’s output, Walcott was one of four Arsenal players to finish the campaign with 10 or more league goals, along with Cazorla, Olivier Giroud and Lukas Podolski. With eight wins and two draws in the last 10 league matches, there’s plenty cause for optimism around the Emirates and as Wenger looks to fine-tune his attack following last term’s summer overhaul, Walcott’s eye for goal seems primed for success once again.

I'm kinda surprised about it too tbh. Consistent for a fair bit alright but 10 games at the start and then another 5/6 towards the end when he got f all. That's a fair chunk of the season.

He didn't get going for a while, but when he did he was absolutely dynamite. Well worth a place in the team of the season, imo.

Seeing as I watch way more Championship than PL football, always like pre-season. Gives a chance to stock my team up with a load of cheap players from the promoted teams.

From Cardiff, think a defender's the best bet. They're much more similar to West Ham than Reading in style of play - a strong physical side who don't allow their opponents much time on the ball. Either Marshall or Hudson will be good bets.

Hull I think will struggle in the PL. Robbie Brady is their stand out player, but I would bring him in if they invested in a quality forward too.

Palace are the most interesting of the three sides. Zaha's gone (and often flatters to deceive) and Bolasie being dropped for the play offs is a worrying sign (he's looked the more threatening when I've watched them play). Glenn Murray is a good bet. Despite his form tailing off, he reminds me a lot of Grant Holt and Rickie Lambert, think he'll score goals. Jonathan Williams, their young winger, is another option who could score well. Palace's defence isn't the best, so I think they'll be relying on goals to stay up.

Any PL team who buys Vydra will be onto something good too...

For me, I see palace and Cardiff struggling. I feel that Hull will be fine. They have a good manager which counts for a lot, an experienced captain (Koren) and can they defend quite well. Palace will be just like reading imo, and Cardiff will struggle to score goals which dooms a side from the off. I saw all these sides at Derby matches this season, and Hull were by far the best side.

As for players I am looking at, for Cardiff no more than Hudson as he scores a few goals.

Hull I will consider one from Elmohamady, Koren, Aluko and if the rumors are true Odemwingie.

Palace I would only get Speroni as a back up keeper for Hart.

haha, sorry to disappoint but Im not. 😉 I hope palace surprise me but looking at the line up yesterday, they don't have anyone who screams premier league quality (apart maybe from Jedinak). Reading were in a similar boat last year.

Murray is injured for a while so one to scratch off the list. May be back 2014...it was that serious. Agree though when fit he is very much in the Grant Holt mould....great championship level striker that should get 10 goals if given a full season.

Craig Noone is another possibility for Cardiff. Very jinky winger. Starts may be an issue.

the one I'm looking for is whoever Cardiff get as their new frontman. Its a space that needs filling and could be a great third striker option. Cardiff's defence as well is worth a look at for the 4m bracket.

I'm staying clear of Palace unless they keep Zaha for another season on loan or get some new recruits. Same with Hull, although Elmohamady as a defender is always worth getting if cheap...could be a mid tho in FPL.

Saw the morning conversation about rule changes and “debate” if those bench points should be reduced to half. That made me do some research for two teams…

I didn’t have greatest year, but still most irritating thing for me was how my rival got lucky (yes lucky) bench points week after week.

I got 39 points from my bench this season, two time it was more than 2 points.
He got unbeliveable 144 points, 18 times it was more than 2 points.

It took until week 37 for me to get past him in rankings and looking at our teams, that should have happened way before..

So let’s change the rules. Now.
(I know it won’t happen, because they propably don’t want 0,5 points for game)

btw, he didn’t make those stupid ‘I put banned player to my starting eleven ha ha ha’ moves.
Points came mostly from benced defenders who just happened to get cs and or goal / assist for that fcking gw.

What you want to do there snowman is get a better rounded squad with players on your bench who are likely to score points so that if you have players you picked that don't start (try and avoid too many injury prone, card prone, rotation prone players in your squad) you will have points coming on too.

I see some people saying nonsense like I don't want to have that player in my squad as I will never play him so I could be leaving points on the bench each week. This is a ridiculous tactic as the more point scorers you have on the bench the better your score will be come the end of the season due to auto-subs.

Anyway I hope this helps and you do better in your second season in fpl

I'm happy BTW that Palace won, especially since my fellow Saffer, Dickagoi will be back in the PL. I'm just p-offed they didn't do the job in 90 minutes.

Providing I can get 2 reasonable forwards, I may head into the season with that quintet as things stand. I know it looks like I'm chasing last season's points, but I can see all of them having another stormer and Santi really kicking on.

I'm not going to set too much store by the fixtures any more tbh. I'm looking for a top quality front 7 and then "sit on them" so to speak, rather than switching about.

The Bale to Hazard switch still leaves me with cold sweats.

I suppose it's expectation, but it seemed really fair and balanced last year unlike the season before where they seemed to go a bit OTT (Baines 8m!).

I think 10 for Mata and Walcott, Hazard and Cazorla 9.5 and 11-12 for Bale seems to hit the spot.

      I really can't wait now!

Van Persie should stay at £13.5m imo, and Coutinho for £8.5m max. It's just the strikers I worry about. Benteke & co should receive significant rises, but maybe Aguero will drop to £10.5m? Or Chelsea invest in Cavani? Who knows.

mmm interesting speculation. Coutinho could well be a massive summer bandwagon. Providing Rooney leaves, he's in the Kagawa bracket for me in the sense I'd be very cautious about them.

He has proved himself in FPL though, there were plenty of questions surrounding Kag's playing time, not as much for Coutinho, especially with Suarez out he'll be nailed on.

I fear they will tbh. Bale, Walcott, Michu, Mata, Hazard will shoot up. Remember Siggy, Cisse and Jelly last season. EVERYONE will want bale so they make it so that if you get bale you'll have to have to really juggle you budget to fit other players like Walcott and RVP in. Bale in the region of 12 for me and the like of hazard and mata will be around 10 - 10.5.

The players who did well the previous season are always relatively expensive.

Everyone complains and says it's impossible to make a decent team.

Three weeks into the season, good value options emerge and everyone gets them.

What Chelsea defender to get depends a bit on price for me. I think both Luiz and Terry could be excellent options as well as Azp of course, Luiz might be too expensive but with Terry's injuries and limited playing time he might drop in price. Big goal threat.

      I agree

I was just looking at the prices of a few players at the end of 2011/12 and their starting price for 2012/13

Most are the same (with rounding): RVP finished 13.2/started 13.0, Bale 9.5/9.5, Aguero 11.4/11.5, Walcott 9.0/9.0, Mata 9.7/9.5

A couple of exceptions are Sturridge 6.5/8.0 and Berbatov 8.9/7.0

So, I guess chances are that Bale will be 11.0 (11.1), RVP 13.5 (13.7) etc...

If he comes to city, he is a wait and see player for me. With all the proven high scoring midfielders there are to choose from this coming season, it would be a risk picking him at the start. Would be a good signing for city though.

Not fantasy related, but how does people feel about Essien making a Premier League "comeback"? Does he still have what it takes, or has his injury worries taken too much of a toll on him? I admit I haven't watched a single Real Madrid game with him playing this season, so I have no idea how he's been doing. I really enjoyed watching him in his early Chelsea career though, incredible physique and engine.

You won't get the same player you had at Chelsea unfortunately but he still has something to offer and provides squad depth. He was one of the fittest players i've seen. Never stopped running.

He is a good squad player @ RM this season.. played as RB & CDM.. he looked fit when ever he played.. he will replace Mikel @ Chelsea next season in defensive mid..

Yeah you would think so. Of course we could revert to 4-3-3 and play with Mikel as an anchor and two more traditional central midfielders. That would mean tossing Mata on a wing though, and he is half the player there compared to playing centrally. I guess continuing with 4-2-3-1 is much more likely.

Bale will be at least 12 comparing him to Lampard over the years.

He scored his highest score at the time of 226 pts (08/09) and probably started at 12.5 or 13 the next season.

Not sure. I suppose to an extent is up to Lukaku. If he feels he would benefit from another season playing regularly then they would let him I think. I hadn't thought of the fact that rafa is in control of the cavani situation now. I think if he wants to leave and Chelsea offer the right sum, then he will go regardless.

Depends on whatever we do on the transfer market. If we don't buy another striker, or we buy another one and sell/trade Torres, I don't see a problem having three strikers. Chelsea, Spurs and Arsenal have all felt the pain of having too few good striker options (and we haven't even had any problems with injuries this season!), especially with the amount of games we will likely play next season as well.

Fergie has fought off Chelsea and City;s billions for years. It can be done with a mediocre squad. All down to his foundations that hes built at the club over the years. Unless Moyes dramatically changes things I dont see much difference. Heres hoping anyway.

If you can only be happy whilst United are winning the prem every other year at least, then yes your life is over. The reason Arsenal fans are happy with fourth is that its still a massive achievement and makes us better than spurs, everton and all the other football league teams. Its not a trophy but it is a big achievement.

Its not a massive acheivement for Arsenal because your clubs shareholders are more interested in lining there own pockets than winning trophies or competing.

Finishing above Spurs and Everton is what its come down to for Arsenal which is quite sad for you guys. Shame they wont ever be the force they once were, well not anytime soon anyway. Used to be a great rivalry there.

This is what I mean by Arsenal fans being duped so easily.

Arsene Wenger has, by dint of his excellent management, and DESPITE a warring board, secured Arsenal's future for a generation or more.

In the meantime, he has kept the team up to the mark, despite being let down by a succession of players.

He seems now to have a nucleus of decent sorts, so it may be that Arsenal can flourish.

To me, in some ways he is a better manager than Ferguson.

Better than Fergie. Sorry that is laughable.

He hasnt kept them up to the mark because he hasnt spent they way he should. Those players never let him down there just not good enough.

Chamakh, Gervinho, Giroud, Podolski, Mertesacker, SANTON!!!

            bad signings. bad management.
