634x258 Season Review

A summer of non-stop football ensured Juan Mata started the previous season in a somewhat sluggish fashion. The Spaniard’s participation in both Euro 2012 and the London Olympics gave him little time for recuperation as Chelsea prepared to get their domestic campaign underway in mid-August. While new Eden Hazard was quick to vindicate the Blues’ decision to shell out over £30m for his services with three opening sets of double figure hauls, Mata had picked up just eight points in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game by the time Gameweek 5 came around:

Highly priced across the Fantasy games ahead of last season, Mata had taken the Premier League by storm in his debut campaign at the Bridge. Initially under the guidance of Andre Villas-Boas then subsequently Roberto Di Matteo, the playmaker racked up six goals and 16 assists after arriving from Valencia and with 162 points accrued, had afforded Fantasy managers another premium priced option for our five man midfields.

The Statistics

A rest over the first international break of the season and the Gameweek 4 clash against QPR proved instrumental, giving Mata the time to recharge his batteries and address his poor start. Ahead of Chelsea’s fifth league match, his price had dropped dramatically, slipping from 9.5 to 8.9; a sideways move to the in-form Hazard saw the Belgian’s price soar from 9.5 to 10.3 over the same period, by comparison.

As Hazard began to toil, Mata exploded into form. Producing a goal or assist in each of his next six appearances, he set the tone for the rest of the season as he chased down his team mate and eventually surpassed Hazard’s feats across the Fantasy games. Fears of Mata suffering as a Fantasy force from Rafa Benitez’s rotation never came to fruition – his compatriot handed him 22 starts in 26 fixtures, compared to nine starts in 12 league matches under Di Matteo.

An outstanding strand of consistency saw Mata either score or assist in 21 of his 31 starts (Hazard managed 16 hauls from the same number of first XI appearances), with 11 goals, 18 assists and 27 bonus points bettering his respective tallies from 2011/12. Finishing the campaign on 212 points, Mata was joint-third top scoring player overall in the FPL game and second for midfielders, leaving Hazard trailing in his wake on 190 points. Strangely, the Spaniard kept his most explosive displays for road trips, with five of his six double figure returns coming away from Stamford Bridge – indeed, his only 10+ points haul in front of his own fans arrived on the final day of the season.

The Prospects

Having already plied his trade under three managers in his two seasons in London, there seems little doubt that Mata will continue to flourish regardless of who takes the reins next. A price increase across the Fantasy games seems inevitable and with Hazard likely to match Mata’s initial cost, we’re left with a real dilemma when it comes to the Chelsea midfield. With Gareth Bale and Theo Walcott also offering huge attacking potential, balancing the budgets in our five man midfields may never have been this tricky.

While Bale and Walcott have no obvious, cheaper alternative options in the Tottenham and Arsenal midfields, the end of season form of Oscar may hand us a more budget-friendly option at the Bridge. The young Brazilian netted in three of his final five appearances to suggest he’s now starting to settle – a poor overall first campaign, however, should ensure his cost stays in the mid-price bracket.

Chelsea’s Super Cup duties against Bayern Munich, which are likely to afford them a double Gameweek at the start of the season once again, will result in substantial investment in the Blues main assets right from the off. If the club’s forwards situation stays the same, it’s likely that Fantasy managers will load up on Mata and Hazard to begin with, though with room for just one or perhaps two heavy hitters in midfield to begin with, the greater goal threat of Bale and Walcott could sway many from viewing the Blues playmaker as a must-have.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Evening all, anyone having a bet on the England friendly tonight?

    I'm looking at:

    Correct Score 1-0 at 7.8
First Goalscorer Daniel Sturridge at 8.2
    Scorecast Sturridge/1-0 at 30.0

and Juan was really more of a problem for my FPL team than aything else

1 - England have conceded exactly one goal in 11 of their last 12 games against the Republic of Ireland. Pointer.

Nathan Delfonso, Nathan Redmond and Jack Robinson were the injury replacements, so they wont be first team.

      Butland

      Smith, Caulker, Dawson, Rose

      Ince, Henderson, Shelvey/Lansbury, Zaha

      Wickham, Sordell

Although hopefully Shelvey CAM with Wickham benched. McEachran & Clyne shouldnt be forgotten about

What's everyone's thoughts on Liverpool now signing Iago Aspas? Both in reality and FPL terms, admittedly I don't know a lot about him but I've been trying to keep track of him since early January, he seems like an exciting addition with determination, commitment and a little "bite'' like one of our other strikers...

I think he'll fit in very well, he has all the attributes to succeed at Liverpool the only one in question is adapting to English football but I'd tip him to have an instant impact, I can't believe we're actually signing non-English players for reasonable sums of money before the 1st of June! I'm liking the new Liverpool!

Aspas is more of a second striker but he can play on the right so presumably yes, I'm not sure I totally believe the Downing rumour yet however, I do know that Liverpool representatives have been touting him around to different PL clubs so it wouldn't surprise me, hopefully he's on his way out, he's a good player that has caught the Liverpool curse and therefore plays like a 5 year old for Liverpool! e.g Robbie Keane

Not a fan of Cleverley either. The sort of player who can do be used as squad cover at United and play against lesser teams. Not a player you would rely on to control a big game in the middle of the pitch.

Surely we're not really still playing a 4-4-2. I thought we looked really good when Gerrard, Wilshere and Cleverley played in a midfield 3.

English people. You know how you have the North/South banter, rivalry whatever you want to call it with each other. What about those of you in the Midlands. Do you feel more North or South? Or are you exempt from this?

The midlands doesnt exist. They are all inbred obviously, have you never been to Norfolk? 😉

In reality the dividing line goes from the humber to the severn and not perfectly east-west. There isnt really a middle ground when you split it like that, also London is a seperate country.

I'm from the midlands, I think people consider themselves in the middle so exempt, but more likely to side with the North

People from the south all think I'm Northern cus I'm from Birmingham, people from the North call me southern.

I'll agree with the Ginkapo re: Norfolk, but don't throw us brummies in that basket you cheeky chimp

Will no longer trust the Stoke defence under Mark Hughes, see him as far less able to grind out results than Pulis.

Sunderland, mmm wait and see on what Di Canio does to them with the squad in disciplinary turmoil. Newcastle have been extremely leaky and Coloccini might return to Argentina.

The only ones that leaves for me right now are Norwich and West Ham at home, maybe Fulham. I hope Swansea's defence get cheaper for switching off after the league cup, but I suspect FPL knows as well as us what happened. Also got a hunch that Villa might tighten up in their second season. They should be 4.0s.

That England team aint too bad. Not a fan of Cahill though, we need better CBs! The rest is good though.

Would have liked to see Welbeck on LW and Jones at CM tonight, shame.

Not convinced with Jones at CM. Man marking is his trick

Yeah he can be a bit careless in the middle of the pitch. Reads the game alot better from the back and is more comfortable playing there.

Yeah he's a great defensive midfielder, the logic is that you can trust him to protect the back four and use him as a platform to attack with freedom. He also brings the ball forward well, good vertical movement, so can link defence and midfield.

Carrick and Lampard are the best CMers available imo, better than Jones, he's one for the future. Chamberlain is not a bad player, Welbeck can always come on a bit later.
