Having started the campaign with two heavy defeats -conceding ten goals and scoring none- Wigan were marked by many as doomed for the drop even before August was finished. Add to the mix their star man, Charles N’Zogbia, was looking for a way out, and it’s fair to say the start of the season was something of a nightmare for those around the DW Stadium.

Two months on and Roberto Martinez has turned the club’s fortunes around impressively. Having subsequently tightened up at the back, Wigan have lost just one of their last six games and, over the last couple of games, are now starting to play again. The Latics found the net only twice in their first six games but have now netted two goals in each of their last two games, with N’Zogbia’s return to form being fundamental to the upswing in their attacking fortunes.

Whereas last season saw N’Zogbia used predominantly as an inside-out right winger, Martinez is utilising his talents on the winger’s natural left flank this time round, too. With Hugo Rodallega dropping to the bench last weekend at St James‘ Park, N’Zogbia played as a left-winger in Wigan’s 4-3-3 set-up and silenced the home crowd with a quickfire brace as Martinez’s side took the game to their hosts.

As the above passing heatmaps show, against Newcastle 90% of his passes came down the left hand side of the pitch at Newcastle whereas in Wigan’s previous game, the 2-0 home win over Wolves, it was near an even split as the Frenchman attacked Mick McCarthy’s side on both flanks. A third of his passes against Newcastle were in the final third, whereas two-third of all passes against Wolves were in the final third, showing just how much of a menace he is to the opposition.

Regardless of where he plays, however, N’Zogbia (number 10) -as these average position maps from the two aforementioned games illustrate- tends to be the further forward of Wigan’s players, and with other similarly priced midfielders Chris Brunt and Charlie Adam scoring similarly so far this season, this fact may swing the odds in his favour for those considering budget midfielders.

Of the four goals Wigan have scored in these two games, N’Zogbia has played a part in three of them, scoring two and assisting one, in a pair of performances that have seen him pick up the maximum 3 Bonus Points in both games. Having picked up 5 Fantasy League Points in Wigan’s first five games, N’Zogbia’s price has plummeted from £6m to £5.4m, but the winger has subsequently racked up an impressive 28 points in his last 3 games.

Wigan have something of a mixed bag of fixtures in their next six (BOL, ful, bla, LIV, WBA, mun) but as he begins to replicate the form that saw him bag 5 goals, 7 assists and a fantastic 31 Bonus Points last season, Charles N’Zogbia is showing just how important he is to Martinez’s side as they continue to climb the league.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

            Nani, vdv, bale, fab, barton

LOL fair enough AB. The guy does tend to score well when he is mentally right. I think I looked at his stats last year and he had something like 5 of his assists and 3 of his goals in the first 10 games of the season and proceeded to do sweet f all for the rest of the season. Maybe this time with a move in either january or next summer he may sustain his scoring better?

I'd put aside our past indifferences and actually start to like the guy if he went back to Everton.

He'd soar in my estimations if he decided that money meant shit to him and went back to the club that created him, they do desperately need a striker after all..

Never ever going to happen though, which is a shame...

    Foster Hahnemann
    Foley Knight Elmo Knochesky Dann
    Arteta Gerrard Bale Nani Albrighton
    Carroll Tevez Drogba

    Albrighton>Adam
    Hahnemann>Mignolet

Mignolet a crazy signing on your wc. His position is under serious threat imo. Bruce is loyal to his players but mignolet looked very dodgy under the high ball against bburn who were very unlucky not to get a goal from one of those he either came for and missed or came for and flapped away imo

If you have him I would hold onto him until he loses his place but if not I would not bring him in at this stage.

no need to wildcard at all

      this week: Albrighton>Adam, maybe Bale>VDV
      next week: Gerrard>Fabs, Konchesky>Coleman
dont get mignolet, his fixtures are bad and gordon is back so his place is in doubt

basically the team is good and there is no need to wildcard

Excellent midfield and attack but at the cost of a very weak defence. You have rotations covered to an extent but how about considering Elmo as a player to add something on top of CS points.

Also Ameobi has been okay on the points recently, but wouldn't see as a long-term solution seing as Hughton prefers 4-5-1 and Carroll remains his main man at present. Your other attacking 7 are all fixture proof so you would expect them to be playing unless an injury so surely you are better of with a sure starter as your cheap forward - can you afford elmander or odemwingie?

Only got 0.3 mill in the bank. So a little bit stuck on getting a good budget forward in. Thanks for your comments though. As not many keeping clean sheets thought a budget defence will be fine as unless you buy city or Chelsea defenders your not likely to get a clean sheet. I'm just thinking whether to get Arteta in for VDV?

by the looks of things u will play a 3-5-2 each week, gohouri and coleman are not certain starters in the long term, wba and blkpool are good attacking but rubbish defense wise, so ur defence will suffer. maybe downgrade malouda and upgrade ur defense?

young to elmo or someone at that price
then u can upgrade useless barton to adam/nzog, leaving u with a strong front 8

good team btw, 7 players same as moi

Hello all, particularly those interested in the DataCo hilarity-

    http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/10/20/copyright_protection_in_football_fixture_lists/

The appeal is due in November, and the smart money is on the development of fixture lists (correctly) being deemed to be a necessary part of running a football league, and not (as DataCo contend) a seperate, creative act requiring seperate protection.

I wonder if Paddy Power will do us a 'scout special' on the outcome?

Funnily enough, I have enquired about the Members' Fee, specifically what proportion goes to the DataCo lawyers. No answer though.

I'd love to support the site, but can't while it aligns itself with the DataCo view. Not trying to start a war, as I fully understand how much hassle Mark would have faced had he taken a stand (i.e. too much).

whilst we are not infallible, the betting odds for clean sheets also back up that assertion

a very intersting fact about blackpool is that they have not been involved in a goal less match so far this season
do u guys think because of theis fact it would be wise to bring in adam for Rouledge for a 4 point hit

    so still leaning towards

    shaw -> simp

    konch -> bos

    4 point hit

risky bringing in those 2 guys, but
with bos definitely playing against wolves

And how many games has Utd won away? Was there 0:0. What if there is 0:0 again? BP's for Schawcross inevitable. Not like Man Utd are flying at the moment. I will not exclude and a possible goal from Scaw. Next GW is another issue. Then sell Schawcross even for a 4 point hit. But that is just me. Remember all the lads that have benched the Mummy against Man Utd.
