Having tasted relegation with Wolves at the end of the 2011/12 campaign, Matt Jarvis was afforded the chance of a quick top-flight return with just a few days left of last summer’s transfer window. Costing West Ham a club record fee in the region of £10m, the winger was soon followed by the loan acquisition of Andy Carroll as Sam Allardyce looked to freshen up his front three in light of the Hammers’ promotion:

Initially, there was a degree of relative optimism that Jarvis – at 6.0 – could potentially rival Kevin Nolan as a genuine mid-price Fantasy contender in the Hammers midfield. Given that his final season at Molineux had harvested eight goals, six assists and 14 bonus points, for a respectable 142 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points, Jarvis’ delivery from the left flank looked tailor-made for Carroll’s aerial abilities, with plenty of assists anticipated.

By the time the season had come to an end, however, Jarvis had proved a bitter disappointment for Fantasy managers. Despite a security of starts which saw him make 29 first XI appearances (in addition to three games off the bench), he found the net just twice and also chipped in with just a couple of FPL assists, ending his first term at Upton Park on just 92 points in the FPL game – a full 57 points behind Nolan, and 50 points less than his tally for Wolves the previous year.

The Prospects

In all likelihood, Jarvis’ displays over the course of 2012/13 should see his price drop further across the Fantasy games. Given his minimal impact, there’d be little surprise if the former Wolves man slipped down to 5.5 in FPL but, while last term’s returns are undoubtedly far from persuasive, his home form towards the tail end of last term, which harvested a goal and four bonus points in his final couple of Upton Park appearances, suggests he may be worth monitoring.

Furthermore, the number of chances created last season indicates he was more than a little unlucky not to pick up a far greater number of assists. According to the Opta definition, Jarvis failed to supply a single assist for his Hammers team mates but, over the course of the campaign, made close to 50 “key passes” – a clear indication that he maintained a steady source of creativity from the flank. Indeed, Jarvis supplied 10 more goalscoring opportunities than Theo Walcott over 2012/13, for example, though thanks to his team mates’ superior finishing, the latter picked up 13 FPL assists, or 10 according to Opta.

While Carroll is currently back at parent club Liverpool, Allardyce has already admitted that securing the big forward’s future on a permanent basis is a “big priority”. The Geordie’s impact towards the end of the season also suggests he found his feet after a patchy settling-in period and, if he does indeed arrive, could bolster Jarvis’s potential next time out if he continues in the same vein. Allardyce has also been linked with Sevilla’s Alvaro Negredo as he looks to rectify a record that produced a mere 11 goals on the road all season – the worst away haul in the Premier League.

With Nolan set for an increase in cost after finishing the season with a flourish, it may well be that the Hammers skipper is priced out of our options in the mid-price bracket. Given that Mark Noble will remain the club’s spot-kick taker and offer us a budget midfield alternative, Jarvis is likely to stay firmly off Fantasy radars next time round. If he can maintain his creative endeavours, though, the winger will be optimistic of picking up more returns next time round and may be a real under the radar option as Allardyce looks to ensure his side avoid “second season syndrome” and improve upon last term’s tenth placed finish.

    and maybe Moreno too.

I have 2FT's and .5 in the bank.

      But:

I see Chelsea pushing on and making a big signing.. Cavani probably.
I see City signing 3 more fairly big players
Arsenal should ensure they sign Higuain.. he would be a great signing and fantasy gold.

At the same time, nothing we hear in the media can be believed until you see the player in question at his presentation.. so much crap is written regarding transfer speculation unfortunately

Higuain to Arsenal is the most appealing transfer from an FPL perspective. A 20 PL goal a season striker at the Emirates would go a long way to pushig them up the table.

However, as a Spurs fan this is also one of the transfers I would least like to happen.

I have never got a good start to a FPL season, and have an unsupported view that getting a good start is key to be in with a chance of finishing at the top at the end of season. Anyone ever looked into past winners (or high finshers) to see how they started to back this up or prove this wrong?

I don't know I think at the beginning being able to differentiate between hopping on a 1 week good performer when you should stick with who you have, and not missing out on an early season form player is the key. Judging this is tough though.

Not necessarily, I'd give an upvote if for example the Hot Topic on U21 predicted lineups, since that is very useful information to those playing the game. I don't think upvotes should be handed out either, but are certainly warranted more often than downvotes.

But by upvoting your saying that the comment is useful information that everyone should see.

You may agree with; "Rooney is better than RVP", but its not exactly useful for everyone to read unless a discussion appears from it.

      I had a pretty decent finish last year from a fairly mediocre start. Actually slacked off a little during the run-in too, it was all about a period from GW14 to GW20 where I scored 76 - 64 - 82 - 73 - 50 - 57 - 84 and went from 241,188th to 4,420th.

I've just had a realisation. All the transfer nonsense whipped up by the papers, it's not just that they will sensationalise a bus timetable if they think it will sell papers, it's also that they have all these sports journalists and football reporters who are sitting there with nothing to do, so they just have to fill their days with meaningless speculation until the new season opens.

    Sound familiar?

But they could at least report on some actual football action like the U21s and the Confederations Cup. Damn it, they could even cover MLS if they're desperate!

Entirely agree Teddy. However it's clear that while niche events appeal to niche markets, high profile made up stuff wins every time when it comes to making money (or not making less money).

I'd love to see wider niche coverage, and the emergence of niche publications (Blizzard, Howler, XI Quartely etc.) and the growth of blogs are delivering it online - but to expect nationals to follow suit - at least in the short term - is a proper pipe dream I'm afraid.

Last season midfielders dominated our thoughts. But if all these rumours come to fruition I think we may see a return of the top heavy team. I.e. RVP Higuain RVW and later becoming RVP Higuain Cavani toward the end of the season.

    Strikers or Mids?

I was interested by Florentino Perez's claim that Real Madrid are being cheated by other clubs and it is absurd that Cavani and Bale are valued at £50 m and Higuain is only valued by Arsenal at £25m. While I agree that there is no way that Cavani is worth twice as much as Higuain surely Madrid's transfer policy and squad rotation are to blame for Higuain's valuation. If you spend absurd amounts of money every summer and give the player limited playing time. Surely you are essentially saying we don't value this player very highly.

Yeah Madrid have had Higuain playing a squad role leading to a lack of consecutive games and a proper run of form. It's the nature of the transfer window that current form dictates a player valuation.

Or you're saying I'm going to buy this player and bench him because I can afford to, and so that my opponents can't play him against me.

In a market with so few buyers and sellers at that price range, the intrinsic value of the player kind of goes out of the window and you will get price discrepancies.

I feel that the key to this next season will be in having the correct forwards. between RVP, aguero (assuming he has a season like his first in the PL), suarez (assuming he stays), sturridge, lukaku (if he stays and nails down a starting spot), higuain (if he joins arsenal), and whatever forward spurs bring in we have a lot of very good heavy hitting options. then we've got other options that could be good such as benteke (depending on price), hernadez (if rooney leaves and he can nail down a starting spot) and cisse (if his price is reduced and he can find the form he had at the end of last season. not to mention the budget options.

as you can see we could be treated to a very wide range of good fantasy options up top and so the challenge will be finding the right ones and as always balancing price/budget, form, and fixtures as well.

in all honesty I could see the potential for going without RVP. a frontline of say higuain, suarez, hernadez or higuain, lukaku, villa/solado (whoever spurs sign) could be gold and save you some money over rvp that you can then invest in getting a strong midfield of say bale mata/hazard and walcott. or really any of the other options I mentioned.

    what do you guys think?

hmm maybe. I think whatever striker spurs get whether it's benteke, soldado, or villa could be a very good fantasy asset.

good point about the prices of big hitting midfielders. however lets say you have benteke at spurs, higuain at arsenal and lukaku nailed on at chelsea and suarez still at pool. thats 4 other very strong fantasy assets who could also come up with big hauls and will all be cheaper than rvp. how would you pick then? assuming they're all in form would you go off of fixtures?

I think the main striker at at least two of the major sides will be key. RVP/Aguero/Arsenal's frontman/Chelsea's frontman. Going to be a lot of goals this season I feel.

agreed. but how do we pick which ones?

could potentially have to pick between rvp, aguero, lukaku/cavani, higuain, villa/soldado/benteke, suarez for 3 slots. sure i'm being a bit optimistic about summer activity but this still seems entirely possible to me

Just an idea, for each article would it be possible to get a sticky or hit topic so that people can discuss the article in one place each time? Back to Jarvis, it's funny how both him and Downing were both bought for their crossing ability to get the best out of Carroll but neither have managed an assist (according to Opta) in the last two seasons that both played with them.

Haa that's the point! Although Matt Jarvis may not be the best example as he was pretty useless this season and noone will probably consider him, only a 5m price tag would mildly tempt me.

Time flies. Fixtures are coming out next Wednesday. Bloody hell, they think the players get no rest in the modern game 😉

    Rotation spreadsheets at the ready....

I'll be looking out for favourable fixtures for Liverpool. If Sturridge gets back in time for the new season he'll have to come in barring a double digit pricing, IMO.

I always do elaborate rotation tickers to see who dovetails best over the course of the season. I realised last season this is a waste of time with the January wildcards. This time out I'll be sizing up rotation pairings for GW1-24.

When your post gets stuck at the bottom of the page and a new one starts, rather than having to repost it would you like to see an option for the bottom 5 posts to be duplicated on the new page?

Fiddling about and came up with this structure. The main thing was trying to have a nailed on GK and DEF so you can try to avoid using FTs on that part of the team. The strikforce does look a little light, but I see that as one of Aguero/Rooney/Higuain(?) + 2 of Rodriguez/Weimann/Mirallas/RVW/Berba.
I'm then picking 2 from the 2 strikers and the 2 cheaper midfielders to play each week.
    Thoughts

    6.5 - 4.0

    6.5 - 4.5 - 4.5 - 4.0 - 4.0

    11.5 - 10.0 - 9.5 - 6.5 - 4.5

    11.0 - 6.5 - 6.5

Can't wait for the new FPL season, should be a cracker this year 🙂 I fear how well United will do though 🙁 I like Moyes as a long-term option but for the first couple of seasons we could go backwards instead of forwards. Still if it works out in the future i'm happy with that.
I'm also looking forward to the showing of who got players for this week of TWS, and to see what way the bidding went, should be fun 🙂
