Interview – Kelvin Travers – Fantasy Premier League Runner-Up

Continuing our series of summer interviews, we meet up with Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game runner-up Kelvin Travers. Despite leading the game during the final round of matches and a total of seven times across the season, Kelvin lost out to Matt Martyniak by just two points overall – he reveals that his final decision of the season, over which Belgian to bench for Gameweek 38, proved decisive.

Can you take us through your final matchday emotions and your team selection strategy, with so many FPL players in with a chance of winning?
I’d made my transfer and captain decision earlier in the week. It was going to be Marouane Fellaini to Philippe Coutinho, then when I heard Anders Lindegaard would be starting for United instead of David De Gea I knew I had no goalkeeper so my plans had to change. The obvious move then was De Gea to Pepe Reina to cover the inevitable Liverpool clean sheet at home to QPR, but that left me with a decision of who to bench – Fellaini or Romelu Lukaku. As it turned out, it was the biggest decision of my season and I got it wrong. I didn’t fancy Lukaku to start against United let alone score, and whilst I knew Fellaini would likely play deep against Chelsea, he offered a goal threat from set pieces and corners.

I went up to my local pub just before kick-off and they had the Newcastle v Arsenal game on. Everybody in there knew what was at stake for me, so when Theo Walcott hit the post, and score updates of a Lukaku hat-trick starting coming through I began to realise it probably wasn’t going to be my lucky day. At the end of 90 minutes, taking subs into account, I knew I had a slender lead at the top and that it would come down to bonus points.

You’ve been playing FPL since 2004/5 and never finished higher than 3,000th before. What did you do differently this season?
This year I did play differently, I played my own game and didn’t worry about anybody else or their team (until the last Gameweek). If I could field 11 players I wouldn’t take a points hit, I played reasonably safe each week with my captain choices, and left my transfers until the end of the week to catch injury news. Losing 0.1 on a player was less important than wasting a transfer and finding out about an injury. No matter what strategy anybody plays, a huge amount of the game is based on luck, and I was pretty lucky this year.

You started with a Gameweek 1 score of 118 and an overall rank of 253. How important was this excellent start and how confident were you back then that you would have such a great season ahead?
A good start was obviously nice to have, but it was one out of 38 weeks. The main benefit from a strong start was having the right players in, such as Michu and Mladen Petric, then moving those players on at the right time. I’d never have imagined at that point I’d spend over half the season in the top 10, and be world number one seven times. A strong start isn’t everything, but it definitely helped me this year, and if I can get off to a strong start again next year I’ll see if I can attempt the impossible once more.

What is your strategy, including captain tactics, and what key pieces of advice for playing the FPL game would you give to our community (eg. keep points hits to a minimum/ or form versus fixtures)?
I generally went for a low cost defence, and spent money in midfield and upfront. Avoided point hits at all costs, and usually just played three at the back. In terms of captaincy choice, I looked at home teams playing teams who were weak away, or players with strengths who were up against defences who struggled against those strengths. For instance, when Chelsea put eight past Aston Villa at Christmas, and everybody jumped on Chelsea assets, I looked at Villa’s weaknesses and saw Gareth Bale as a player to expose those weaknesses in the following game – which he did with a hat-trick. The logic behind my decisions was simple, watch football and see what’s going on. See what players and teams are playing well and more importantly which players are likely to perform well in their upcoming games.

How important are stats and research, such as those available through Fantasy Football Scout, to your game?
I love stats. Everybody who knows me knows I’m a bit of a geek with football stats. I love reading the more statistical articles on Fantasy Football Scout as I think a lot can be learned from statistics, but let’s face it, no statistic is going to predict a Jordi Gomez hat-trick or a Tim Howard goal in gale force winds.

What were your most difficult decisions this year?
My final day decision on who to bench, and the two occasions I took point hits. I actually found using both my wildcards to be fairly easy this year, as I’d planned ahead my strategy on how to use those so close together to maximise double Gameweek points. I can’t really think of many difficult decisions actually, I was pretty relaxed the whole season and as I said earlier, just made the moves I felt were the best for me and didn’t overcomplicate things.

What do your family/friends/partner think of your achievement this year? Is it a secret passion or do you bore them to tears with your scores?
My girlfriend hates me playing Fantasy football, watching football, just anything to do with football, but I think secretly she was hoping I’d win so she’d get a holiday to Hong Kong. The majority of my friends were behind me winning, there were a couple at the start of the season who threw me out of leagues for ‘being too good’, but I think by challenging to win the whole thing I may have even won their respect. Every time I went into the pub the first thing I’d hear from people was “How’s Fantasy football going? Are you still number one?”. I’ve also chatted to loads of people on Twitter who supported me, and even swapped plenty of messages with Julian Zipparo (who finished the season in sixth and had led the competition during the season) throughout the season, and towards the end Evs (who finished in fifth). I even got a message from Jon Reeson who won it a few years ago, offering me support and good luck. It’s a bit surreal to have done so well at something, when all I want to do is take an interest in games I normally wouldn’t, watch football and have a few beers with my friends.

Do you play any other Fantasy football games? What if anything would you change about the FPL game (a runner-up prize perhaps)?
Playing one FPL game is enough for me! I did the Euro 2012 Fantasy game last summer and finished in the top 50 from what I remember. The FPL game itself I think is ok as it is. I’m disappointed I didn’t get anything for finishing second, I was hoping that the Premier League might give me a couple of tickets to a game as a gesture of goodwill, but I think the top three or top five should really get something – not that I’ll ever be up there again! I won a bit of money from my mini-leagues, although as I’m sure others have found, it’s not always that easy collecting in your winnings!

The German U-21 team for tomorrow hasn't been leaked yet, but they'll probably only have a squad of 19 to choose from. Alongside the injured Mlapa, the suspended Lasogga and the fever-ridden Moritz, Sead Kolasinac injured his knee in training on Monday and probably won't be risked against Rusisa.

Coach Rainer Adrion is caught between giving a run-out to those who haven't featured so far and trying hard to win the match so as to avoid being the only German U-21 team to have lost all three group matches at a major tournament. "There'll certainly be changes, but not total rotation", he said today.

Adrion has (rightly) come in for a lot of criticism since the defeat against Spain. Only in the job because he's Joachim Löw's mate, Adrion has been so clueless since taking over in 2009 that Germany failed to qualify as defending champions in 2011, losing 4-1 to Iceland on the way - and now this. He's picked the wrong players for the squad, and then, once in Israel, selected the wrong starting eleven.

So although his contract has just been extended for a year, I reckon that Adrion will have to go for victory tomorrow. This means that he'll have the players just as wound up and raring to go as Stuart Pearce did with England today in a similar situation. (Erm, hold on, I might need to rethink that last bit...)

  3. What's wrong with 4-4-2?
    Woeisme
    • 11 Years
    10 years, 10 months ago

Why did 4-4-2 go out of fashion?

The basic principle of football could not be simpler. If you score more than the opposition you win.

You could have the greatest defence ever assembled but to win you still have to score. Despite this obvious knowledge, traditionally, teams generally consisted of 4 defenders and only half that number of strikers. Strikers charged with the task of completing the function that earns the win.
It stands to reason that when you have 2 v 4 that the advantage should lie with the 4. ( This is without even considering the keeper) This standard selection seems to be a direct contradiction to the games aim.

The logical way forward would appear to favour more forwards per team, even out the striker to defender ratio. Give your team more weapons to achieve the only task that can win a match.

Yet as the game has evolved the exact opposite has happened. Fewer and fewer teams are actually deploying the traditional 2 men up front. 4-4-2 has been replaced by 4-4-1-1 or variations of 5 man mid-fields with a loan striker. ( Hell, Spain won the Euros with none)

Is this philosophy not fundamentally flawed?

7 times out of 10 the winner of the Ballon d'or is a forward. The same is true for similar awards, like 'Player of the year', yet we chose to allocate just one starting jersey to this class of player.

Ask most group of fans outside any ground on matchday who they are most looking forward to seeing and inevitably the answer will be, Van Persi, Aguero, Ronaldo, Berbatov, Messi etc etc. Ie, The FORWARDS. These are the players we all want to see. That is why they are the most expensive and yet nearly all clubs ration us to one per team. Why?

There are entire TV programmes dedicated to showing us the gameweeks goals. 'Match of the day' 'Goals on Sunday' It's no coincidence that there is no such programme dedicated to compiling the best clearances or best blocks. 'Saves on Sunday' anyone?

I fully appreciate the other skills of football and understand their importance. I just don't understand why the game appears to gravitate towards them. Only Alan Hansen appreciates a 0-0 over a 3-3. When was the last time there was a mass team celebration when a defender executes a perfectly timed sliding tackle? Did you ever see Scholes or Gerrard jumping into the fans with their jersey over their head because they sprayed a 40 yard cross field pass right to the toe of their team mate? We celebrate goals. Even the deflected ones and the tap ins. We all want to see them, I'll even go as far as to say that 99% of us will accept that they are the most important part of football.

So, with all that in mind. Why do we all seem to accept that the way to win the majority of your matches in this day and age is to reduce the number of strikers on the field?

Ps. ( It's no surprise to me that the same is not true in FANTASY football)

great post. But you have missed an important point. In the modern game, it's all about possession, hence the extra man in midfield. Having this allows you to take your time and open up a team to allow the goalscorer his chance. it also deprives the other team of that thing you need to have to score, I think they call it a ball

Of course, but people aren't paid millions of pounds a year to manage football teams to get this stuff wrong. It's obvious why teams set out as they do, bar a few variations. That is why we've had such interesting strategies when is come down to formations.

How often do you see Glen Johnson arrive late into the box to make a last ditch tackle? The reason it happens is because full backs are not solely defenders and so a good counter attack will result in 2v2.

4 middies plus 2 forwards -- in any formation -- create a 6-on-4 advantage on offense. Teams don't have more strikers because they rarely come back to play defense, as they're needed to score goals, as you say.

And I have to say that, regarding defense, play rarely stops long enough to celebrate ... But keepers get quite animated after a special save ... Frankly, without defense, the sport turns into the NBA. Ick.

Well no it doesn't actually. 4 middies plus 2 forwards would be up against 4 defenders and 4 middies, creating a 6 on 8. It still favors defence.

Only if you're playing a plodding, position-cemented style. A quick counter-attacking style will see the outside mids push forward into outside forward positions, the fullbacks slide into the outside MF positions to cover, with a virtual 2-man back. That provides 8 men on 'offense' ...

I agree with you, and its why I advocate wingbacks and sweepers massively. Technically members of the defence but add massive pressure to the attack and can also provide an extra body up front if needed. If disciplined properly there is no reason why it should leave you open at the back.

I tend to think that these teams that play say a 4-2-3-1 effectively play with four 'forwards'.

e.g Hazard and Mata for Chelsea. Also at times United played RvP, Welbeck and Rooney.

      4-4-2 is an antique.

Umm I think mids such as xavi, iniesta, silva, pirlo, etc are also the ones people come to see.

also while your logic on a basic level seems sound, you're ignoring the tactical significance. certain setups and formations trump others.

and don't forget the 4231 formation. while you only have one true forward but it allows you to employ skillful wingers and attacking mids such as ronaldo, ozil, di maria, mata, hazard, etc.

I'm not suggesting that all these world class managers are actually wrong, I'm just questioning how they all came to the decision that the way to win matches was to play less forwards. And asking if that decision is not contrary to apparent logic?

At senior level, I often play a variant of a 4-3-3, however the 2 full backs push into wide mids when attacking, with holding CM sitting in front of CMs.

You do need good strikers, with fitness and work ethic especially for the 2 wider strikers (inside forwards) to cover any full back pushing forward, but going forward the formation is capable of goals, but equally it can be a counter attackers dream.

Formations are irrelevant in many cases as quality of player and ability to retain the ball is the most critical aspects, as the chasing teams will often make a mistake & the quality players will make the possession count with one great finish or pass.

      Winning 1-0 = 3 points
Winning 5-4 = 3 points but whilst entertaining can lead to heart failure!!

Football is great as its all about opinions, none are right and none wrong, but on any given day 11 v11 the best team should win!

I think the point that only Hansen celebrates good defending and that teams dont celebrate is so wide of the mark and fairly irrelevant. I can safely say all team mates applaud good defending in the dressing room as do managers. And good defenders command as much respect from fellow pros for their talents.

formations and positions nowadays are more fluid then they were in back in the day - for example players are expected to get involved with more phases of play then they did before - leading to greater variety of formations - now we have wingers come forwards such as walcott, 'in the hole' attacking midfielders such as michu that are neither midfielders nor forwards and so on

Along similar lines to JK, I'd say reducing it to attack v defence is the source of the confusion.

I don't think it's that teams have become less attacking, quite the opposite. The difference is that everyone has been sucked into the midfield. Fullbacks and strikers. The congested midfield is one of the defining features of the modern game.

The formation names are misleading because fullbacks play so high and attacking midfielders are often forwards in reality (hence the mentions of the 'front four'). Hence 4-2-3-1 becomes more like 2-4-4. This is actually what the classic Brazilian 4-2-4 is if you do the same for it.

      Football is cyclical.

Strange then that the number of goals scored per game has been climbing steaddily for a long time now...Formations these days are simply convenient hooks for us punters and the media to hang our hats on...the game is far more fluid than that...see comments above...

Numbers do not tell the whole story. Back in the Fifties and Sixties, teams were always listed in a 2-3-5 formation. But the midfield would consist of a stopper centre-half (a defensive midfielder who played in front of the two fullbacks) plus two wing halves (who were expected to cover defence as well as midfield). And the front five included two wingers who were expected to cover midfield when not attacking, and either the centre forward or the two inside forwards might be deep-lying.

Later, the stopper centre half was replaced by two central defenders (4-2-4). Meanwhile, developments such as Alf Ramsey's wingless wonders and the Dutch total football resulted in a variety of more fluid formations, with more and more of the attacking players in midfield (since the forwards might be starved of possession if the team did not control the midfield) and with fullbacks often being encouraged to join the attack as overlapping fullbacks or wingbacks instead of just being purely defensive players. It hasn't always been 4-4-2!

Having a greater number of forwards on the pitch will not result in the team scoring more goals if they never receive the ball; it is sometimes more effective to strengthen the midfield instead. But all formations have both strengths and weaknesses. If the two lines of four in a 4-4-2 are too far back then the team will have little attacking threat, but if they are further forward, or if too many of the defenders join an attack, then the team may be susceptible to quick counter-attacks by the opposition. It's not easy to get the balance right.

I'd recommend this book if anyone is interested this - "Inverting the Pyramid" by Jonathan Wilson. The name refers to the change from 2-3-5 to 3-5-2 (which in many cases was actually more like a 5-3-2 due to the wing-backs playing more like full-backs).

4-2-3-1 is what English football should be teaching from the ground level up now, if we want to beat the silky spainards.

      GK

      DEF DEF DEF DEF

      DM DM

      RW AM/SS LW

      CF

Wingers tuck in when required in defence, wide in possession. Fullbacks bomb on and wingers drop deep. Our future English players have to play like this. Suddenly a good winger is golden. Look at Bayern, two fantastic wingers and mobile full backs. 4-4-2 is dead unless you have a team full of intelligent players with good positional sense.

Anyone agree, and to what extent?

It's certainly the fashionable formation at the moment and produces entertaining football, but no doubt some development or new (or previously little used) tactic will emerge that will become the 'best' way to play.

What an interesting thought process. I do hope that we keep this thread going, I'd like to see how this discussion develops. You've put up quite a lot of open-ended questions in your post, so do bear with me if I spend a bit too much time on answering them, because they're based on vastly different aspects of the game.

Regarding 4-4-2 and the death of it, you must first keep in mind that the "battles" across the pitch are a lot more segregated than we think, especially when you consider attacking and defensive transitions.

Personally, I disagree with the notion that you need a numerical advantage to breach a defense. What people don't know about 4-4-2 versus 4-4-2 is that when this battle was very prominent in the early 90s/2000s (especially in the British leagues) the 2 strikers are generally locked in "individual" battles with the 2 central defenders, whether trying to outpace/outwit them or just beating them in the air. Full-backs usually dealt with wingers directly 1v1, which resulted in the "excitement" of wingers pulling off tricks or skinning a fullback such as Ryan Giggs, Kanchelskis and Ginola etc.

But to answer the question directly, the death of a 2-striker system arose when the "space between the lines" was utilised more effectively; Second strikers, who were either a striker with extreme technique or a midfielder who had a "real eye for goal" utilised that space particularly well, e.g. players like Zola off Hasselbaink. If a central defender were to push forward to mark the second striker, it allowed the remaining striker (who usually was pacy) free reign to outpace or outmuscle his opponent, which was a disadvantage largely to a defender.

Having said that, my advocate here is "utilisation of space" that only recently modern football has developed: The "Makelele" role only was coined due to teams needing someone specifically to nullify this threat, because chucking more forwards in a more offensive area of the pitch would (A) expose you more to counterattacks, (B) run a risk of you not having as much possession and (C) be completely redundant because the offensive players would not get enough "service".

After reading the replies to this post, most are advocating systems that win matches, which is the point of the game really. I'd go as far as saying that the philosophy advocated IN THIS POST is fundamentally flawed, if not insufficiently backed up.

As to the topic of awards, TV, and accepting what is the most important part of football, what we don't realise is that we are only exposed to a "select few" that dominate our media, due to whatever reasons that people have mentioned before that has nothing to do with football.

Couple this with the nature of football matches which are "result" oriented games, it's far likelier to score consistently than to keep shutouts/defend consistently in order to gain recognition. The game gravitates towards them because the audience can only pay attention for so long; A goal only takes "a moment of magic" which is much easier to publicise than a defense or a defensive player who performs tackles and interceptions for 90 minutes. To put it quite concisely, offensive metrics are far, far easier to MARKET than defensive ones.

And with the final question, I'd like to advocate again that it's not about the number of strikers on the field (I seriously hope you're not arguing along those lines); it's about utilisation of advantages, or "mismatches" in basketball terms if you play it, scoring goals whether through overrunning a team via possession or effective set piece routines.

I hope this passed the message across effectively enough. Very willing to answer any other questions, I'm very chatty 😛

OK down near the marina in Barceloneta there's a little Uruguayan steak restaurant, it's a little bit rustic but it's cheap and unbelievably good with a great atmosphere. Also you're not likely to see any other tourists there.

If you have enough time, take the train out to Figueres and go to the Salvador Dhali museum, I'm not really into art but it's one of the best museums/galleries I've ever been to.

The other places are obvious such as Camp Nou, Sagrada Familia etc.

As the fixtures are released next week; what importance do they have in forecasting big points?

Is there substantial evidence that proves easier fixtures consistently provide more points?

I recall Evertons first 10, or so, fixtures were easy last year, so I invested in Howard & Baines...

I think they only kept one clean sheet & that was against Man Utd!!

We'll have the usual rotation spreadsheets (very useful) come out early on but it all means Jack Shit until we know the rough teams come gw1. All the speculation is a useless but sometimes fun distraction and the real deal starts 1 week before kick off.

My unsubstantiated opinion is that defense suffers in the early days. Defenses need to 'gel' together - which takes time. Offenses can get away with playing a bit individualistic ... and it only takes a 1% success rate to ruin a CS, as opposed to a 100% rate to keep one. By the holidays, defenses shore up.

So I invest in offense early, then shift to spending money more in back later on.

        Key word: unsubstantiated.

        2 in the first 5, I believe.

        Then I bought Baines.

Then 0 CSs in the next 15.

Then I sold Baines for Evra.

Then they started keeping CSs again (I think I remember a run of 7 in 9 towards the end of the season).

i think if easier fixtures are supported by good form then there is a greater chance of a points haul, however, imo at the start of the season fixtures to a large extent go out of the window due to promoted teams wanting to prove themselves/still enjoying the euphoria of the previous season, and just teams in general in a sense having to start again due to new signings/managers etc making them more vulnerable to upsets

If he plans to play 4-3-3 again, could this be the reason he may be looking to get rid of Mata(If the rumours are true)?

I think a majority of Premier League teams operate a 4-2-3-1/4-4-1-1 now, would be interesting to see whether Mourinho follows this or tries to counter it, particularly away from home. Mourinho is also a fan of attacking full-backs, is he not?

    Great interview.

It really sucks to have been in 1st only to lose because of Lukaku. I wish it were as easy as saying he made the wrong choice. But the truth is, he had to go with Fellaini over Lukaku.

Lukaku didn't start, was playing Manchester United, versus Fellaini who's always a goal threat and a certain starter against a Chelsea team with little to play for.

There's no way he could have seen that happen.

i've not even seen the rules yet for up and down votes.....What would you use a down vote for ?...is it for a bad post or if you disagree with the point made...or both...disagreeing with the point made doesn't make it a bad post...

I can see your point. Maybe a brighter colour for the down vote would sort it. Add it to Mark's feedback HT and see if he agrees 😉

    Well, here's a thing!

It's a pleasure to see so many positive posts about HC, not just those liking it, but also those suggesting how to improve it.

Sometimes, some people on this site can be very annoying with negativity, but tonight. It's a joy to behold 🙂

It will calm down. Today was a tad superficial with posts coming from nowhere in the hope for a positive number to the right, green background or even a title. However, this is better in the long run though.

i think the more casual visitor benefits massively, they can come in and sort by best discussion rating or view the hot topics and get the best stuff within minutes, rather than having to scroll through thousands of comments.

you can get from it what you want. if you liked the old system you can use it as that, just ignore the options/voting and post as always.
(i know you're tongue in cheek, but the point needs making, you can barely tell the difference if you don't wish to)
