Interview – Kelvin Travers – Fantasy Premier League Runner-Up

Continuing our series of summer interviews, we meet up with Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game runner-up Kelvin Travers. Despite leading the game during the final round of matches and a total of seven times across the season, Kelvin lost out to Matt Martyniak by just two points overall – he reveals that his final decision of the season, over which Belgian to bench for Gameweek 38, proved decisive.

Can you take us through your final matchday emotions and your team selection strategy, with so many FPL players in with a chance of winning?
I’d made my transfer and captain decision earlier in the week. It was going to be Marouane Fellaini to Philippe Coutinho, then when I heard Anders Lindegaard would be starting for United instead of David De Gea I knew I had no goalkeeper so my plans had to change. The obvious move then was De Gea to Pepe Reina to cover the inevitable Liverpool clean sheet at home to QPR, but that left me with a decision of who to bench – Fellaini or Romelu Lukaku. As it turned out, it was the biggest decision of my season and I got it wrong. I didn’t fancy Lukaku to start against United let alone score, and whilst I knew Fellaini would likely play deep against Chelsea, he offered a goal threat from set pieces and corners.

I went up to my local pub just before kick-off and they had the Newcastle v Arsenal game on. Everybody in there knew what was at stake for me, so when Theo Walcott hit the post, and score updates of a Lukaku hat-trick starting coming through I began to realise it probably wasn’t going to be my lucky day. At the end of 90 minutes, taking subs into account, I knew I had a slender lead at the top and that it would come down to bonus points.

You’ve been playing FPL since 2004/5 and never finished higher than 3,000th before. What did you do differently this season?
This year I did play differently, I played my own game and didn’t worry about anybody else or their team (until the last Gameweek). If I could field 11 players I wouldn’t take a points hit, I played reasonably safe each week with my captain choices, and left my transfers until the end of the week to catch injury news. Losing 0.1 on a player was less important than wasting a transfer and finding out about an injury. No matter what strategy anybody plays, a huge amount of the game is based on luck, and I was pretty lucky this year.

You started with a Gameweek 1 score of 118 and an overall rank of 253. How important was this excellent start and how confident were you back then that you would have such a great season ahead?
A good start was obviously nice to have, but it was one out of 38 weeks. The main benefit from a strong start was having the right players in, such as Michu and Mladen Petric, then moving those players on at the right time. I’d never have imagined at that point I’d spend over half the season in the top 10, and be world number one seven times. A strong start isn’t everything, but it definitely helped me this year, and if I can get off to a strong start again next year I’ll see if I can attempt the impossible once more.

What is your strategy, including captain tactics, and what key pieces of advice for playing the FPL game would you give to our community (eg. keep points hits to a minimum/ or form versus fixtures)?
I generally went for a low cost defence, and spent money in midfield and upfront. Avoided point hits at all costs, and usually just played three at the back. In terms of captaincy choice, I looked at home teams playing teams who were weak away, or players with strengths who were up against defences who struggled against those strengths. For instance, when Chelsea put eight past Aston Villa at Christmas, and everybody jumped on Chelsea assets, I looked at Villa’s weaknesses and saw Gareth Bale as a player to expose those weaknesses in the following game – which he did with a hat-trick. The logic behind my decisions was simple, watch football and see what’s going on. See what players and teams are playing well and more importantly which players are likely to perform well in their upcoming games.

How important are stats and research, such as those available through Fantasy Football Scout, to your game?
I love stats. Everybody who knows me knows I’m a bit of a geek with football stats. I love reading the more statistical articles on Fantasy Football Scout as I think a lot can be learned from statistics, but let’s face it, no statistic is going to predict a Jordi Gomez hat-trick or a Tim Howard goal in gale force winds.

What were your most difficult decisions this year?
My final day decision on who to bench, and the two occasions I took point hits. I actually found using both my wildcards to be fairly easy this year, as I’d planned ahead my strategy on how to use those so close together to maximise double Gameweek points. I can’t really think of many difficult decisions actually, I was pretty relaxed the whole season and as I said earlier, just made the moves I felt were the best for me and didn’t overcomplicate things.

What do your family/friends/partner think of your achievement this year? Is it a secret passion or do you bore them to tears with your scores?
My girlfriend hates me playing Fantasy football, watching football, just anything to do with football, but I think secretly she was hoping I’d win so she’d get a holiday to Hong Kong. The majority of my friends were behind me winning, there were a couple at the start of the season who threw me out of leagues for ‘being too good’, but I think by challenging to win the whole thing I may have even won their respect. Every time I went into the pub the first thing I’d hear from people was “How’s Fantasy football going? Are you still number one?”. I’ve also chatted to loads of people on Twitter who supported me, and even swapped plenty of messages with Julian Zipparo (who finished the season in sixth and had led the competition during the season) throughout the season, and towards the end Evs (who finished in fifth). I even got a message from Jon Reeson who won it a few years ago, offering me support and good luck. It’s a bit surreal to have done so well at something, when all I want to do is take an interest in games I normally wouldn’t, watch football and have a few beers with my friends.

Do you play any other Fantasy football games? What if anything would you change about the FPL game (a runner-up prize perhaps)?
Playing one FPL game is enough for me! I did the Euro 2012 Fantasy game last summer and finished in the top 50 from what I remember. The FPL game itself I think is ok as it is. I’m disappointed I didn’t get anything for finishing second, I was hoping that the Premier League might give me a couple of tickets to a game as a gesture of goodwill, but I think the top three or top five should really get something – not that I’ll ever be up there again! I won a bit of money from my mini-leagues, although as I’m sure others have found, it’s not always that easy collecting in your winnings!

          ok, cool.

I just wanted to point out that the semi's are on the same day, so no use having an Italian and Spain keeper...no manager subs allowed.

              read and weep... 😥

              Morning Rudi,

That's correct, as the semi-finals are on the same day there won't be enough time to update everyone's squads before the 2nd semi-final kicks off, so manual subs/ captain changes aren't available between the two matches.

              Hope this helps.

              Kind Regards

haha i would've loved goalless draws too, had a defender from each country as well.

I went to bed at half time with all the scores 0-0 and me sitting on 48 points and I woke up to 32 🙁

I think we can all accept that Torres could be sold/auctioned/raffled/given away.

Though he did show a bit of his old form during the last month or so.

Maybe it would be down to whether he wants to stay or go.

From a fantasy point of view, I'm going to be interested to see if Andy Carroll signs with West Ham. His form was very good at the end of the season and if his FPL starting price is brought into line with other West Ham players he could be a very strong second or third striker option.

                  Interesting debate.

The thing about Gareth Bale that's scary (and improving) is the fact that he can play quite effectively in multiple positions, which wasn't part of his weaponry a couple of seasons ago.

Bale has actually played left wing, right wing and in the hole. You are both right.

However, it would be unrealistic to expect Bale to play 1 position only, especially in a league that adapts relatively quickly, due to managers being able to make reactive substitutions quite aptly.

What DOES stay constant about Spurs though, is their default 4-2-3-1 setup. Bale at left wing is good against high-line defenses (such as Arsenal's), while him on the right wing gives him the extra option to cut and shoot (Southampton, Sunderland come to mind).

When Bale does play in the hole however, think his results have been mixed. The thing about Bale in the hole is that even Bale himself hasn't quite decided what his playstyle would be just behind the striker, as Bale has 2 things he likes doing best: Being involved in attack by dribbling with the ball, and shooting. By playing behind the striker, I (personally) find that Bale himself doesn't drop enough to receive the ball to dribble at opponents, but when he plays left wing, he tends to start those marauding runs from deep (think he did that v Norwich if I'm not wrong).

His shooting has definitely been from the left wing cutting in though, especially the one against West Ham. How Bale's handling the Second-Striker Role is up to him to "define" really, but atm he does tend to fade out and not get involved in Spurs' attacking play, especially when they REALLY slow down and get stuck in the midfield.

If you're gonna play Bale, he CANNOT stick to one position, simply because he's quite good at playing several positions at once. It's quite a unique situation for Spurs really, and I'm quite glad that AVB's the one that's giving him the freedom to experiment with potential new position.

                    I like you.
I remember he play against stoke in the hole position that doesn't really effective as Stoke has 2 big CB. But I agree with you, he can play every position if he can find a way to score against tough oppenent.
2 goals against Inter Milan is brilliant as a left wing and he out-played the inter right-back.

Frankly, out of those candidates, Dempsey is still the most suited to the role in the hole. Issue with those 3 candidates is that the teams quite literally REVOLVED around them in their best days. Siggy was the only one who could shoot at Swansea, Dempsey was the most mobile at Fulham (laterally and vertically, Duff could only run in a straight line), and Bale is still "learning the trade" really.

Difficult to say, unfortunately. Spurs have bigger problems, such as figuring out who to play as striker. Their game changes A LOT depending on who plays up front (think of the difference between Defoe not on the pitch and when he came on against Man City)

Comes down to what's going on in AVB's head really. If Spurs really want to play Bale in the hole, he'll grab another winger or two. Siggy and Demps on the left have been DIRE.

Hey guys, here it goes. Who here actually uses the statistics available in the members area to inform transfers and general decisions? It seems most statistical trends and anomalies are suggested here in the forum just not in numbers. I would say I would use goals imminent and my own data 20% of the time to inform decisions, 20% season ticker, 40 % this forum! How much per cent is left? 20% well 20 per cent on gut feeling I guess. I am considering whether I should purchase the members area again.

For me it's not a question of whether or not the stats/extended ticker/etc. are worth the money, but what I get from this site on the whole; in terms of pure banter alone it is worth the money. The time and effort the team put into making this place better all the time deserves the membership without question IMHO.

Well I'm no expert but, I, like Tinkerman, found RMT quite useful last year and have always used the ticker to map put potential transfers down the line. Don't use stats at all really; I read the forum alot to get a good all round picture of form/fixtures/bandwagons/etc but then use all that info and what my own feeling is and make decisions based on that. In short, probably no need to be a paid up member, but for reasons above (as you have said too) I will be signing up again.

      Good question!

I use the RMT projections and the comparison tool a lot to help make decisions. There especially useful when you've not got much time to dedicate to FPL and maybe haven't been following things closely want to get a good idea of who's on form (at least statistically).

Of course, the majority of your decision should be based on watching football and the advice of people on here is invaluable but the statistics don't lie and are a real way to orientate yourself (if you know what I mean) when you're not sure who/what to believe.

This past season I only dipped into the stats occasionally. Most of the time the options I had to choose from seemed obvious. However, I certainly read and absorbed all the members articles, I think these are essential. I'm also convinced that judicious use of a meticulously thorough season ticker is invaluable - firstly for keeper combos and defender rotation and secondly to get a feel for which teams are due runs of particularly welcoming or hostile fixtures and when.

I've been looking to get membership, just because of what the site offers. I don't feel comfortable using the ticker, the articles and comments without at least trying to give back.

Never been a member though so I don't know how useful the member content is

Bought the member package last season but didn't use it as much and often as I would like to. The comparison tool comes in handy when only I face a situation in deciding two very similar fantasy football players. And the season ticker is very useful too.

For me, if I'm drawn between players to transfer in, I like to use the stats in the members area. For midfielders and attackers I will look at shots, SoT, and then in turn chances per matches etc and usually over the last 6 games, I like players in form. And I will weigh this at around 33%.

For defenders I look at blocks, chances created, clean sheets and who the opposition os over the next 6 games and their attacking threat. Basically look at anything that contributes to PPI and points (assists, clean sheets etc).

33% is gut instinct as you say. and 33% on what people say on here

Hi WR, as a general rule we won't be discussing moderation decisions in public so if there are specific issues then please email (support@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk)

On this occasion I'll respond in general terms; the moderators are all still getting to grips with this new system just as much as everyone else - there are times we'll make judgment calls which some folks won't agree with but we're not infallible so please bear with us. We're probably still erring on the side of being too light-touch rather than going overboard but I think by and large we've got the balance right in most cases and with any luck we'll improve with experience 🙂

Because some comments are "bad" in themselves but may draw negative reactions which just escalate. Also, perhaps the original comment raises a valid point but, having addressed it, the discussion has nowhere to go.

Locked discussions on forums have been around for years - it's a common community management tool.

On the subject of discussions mark is there any way of ieeping a "hot topics" list for a bit longer than currently.

I was involved in a discussion with a few posters re gk rotation and one of the guys wanted to do a graph but had to wait until he finished work. My problem was when I came back I could not find the post again for ages.

I think if you could either extend the hot topic list to include all hot topics for 48 hours or allow people to "follow" a hot topic see they can see the discussion thread in their profile it could be quite useful. This kind of thing would obviously be useful for the private league things like the council one last season.

Nope, if you go into an old post you can choose to sort it so that the stickied comments show first - all previous hot topics will still be stickies so you should be able to find it that way.

Sort by sticky only works under each ffs post though afaik TW so when ffs are putting out 4+ posts a day that could get tedious. If you could sort by discussion rating across all posts for the last 48 hours say that could be quite useful.

I hadn't thought of that berbilly. It would have made things a bit easier alright but does not change the fact that if you log on from a different time zone or miss a day and want to go over the hot topics you have to go into each post and sort by comment or rating. The hot topics bar is great for cutting through all this chaff

  24. Which Premium Defenders Are Worth It?

Premium defenders worth it next season?

I think Vidic could come back to the fold. Vertonghen another if he continues his mid season form. Koscielny the third option which could offer some great value. The new Liv central defender could be another value proposition.

Add the usual suspects in Luiz, Evra, Baines, Rafael, Gibbs, Sagna, GJ, Enrique, Kompany, Zabaleta which ones do you most fancy?

I think with the Che and City managers change in particular, selection might be tougher this season as we had a smaller pool to choose from last season to some extent due to Mancini's and Rafa's rotation which might not be the case this season.

In fact the Arsenal striker position, Che striker position and the City attackers are three positions that weren't in play to a great extent last season. They will be in play to a greater extent this season making teams more diverse. Selection might be a tad bit tougher i reckon. Not to mention if Spurs and Everton decide to get a decent striker amongst their ranks.

The best and only way to success is ONE EXPENSIVE DEF MAXIMUM

The potential for big scores is really, really low, and while you will end up scoring above average almost every week with premium defs, your overall score will never be great.

      I'm saying that from experience

Na, cheapies to begin with. Maybe a chelski defender with their inevitable early DGW. Would only invest initially in a somewhat stable defence as new managers/players could take time to gel.

Also, as history suggests, the lower teams do well defensively at the beginning of the season, while the bigger teams tend not to.

what makes you think Vidic could come to the fold?

Vert is a good option due to attacking threat but I don't think he's worth it unless spurs can tighten up at the back.

Kos, Enrique, Baines, and Sagna are the ones I fancy most. and maybe Rafa if he's nailed on....
I've always gone Enrique over GJ for some reason and for the most part it's worked out for me (think DGW this year 😎 ). not sure if luiz will be nailed on so hard to tell, Kompany not worth the premium imo. and Zaba could be a good option if we know he's nailed on but Richards could be a threat, hard to tell. Gibbs vs Monreal is another dilemma for us.

All comes down to pre-season imo.

Can't believe that I'm wracking my FPL brain before fixtures are even out.

What we don't realise about GW1 is that when we pick a lineup, we usually plan for 4-5 weeks in advance. For instance, Gameweek 1 last season involved a DGW for Chelsea, which resulted in a consequent blank for them as well. Little things like pre-season form and squad composition will become more relevant once the season starts, but there really is no point plucking names out of thin air unless we have decent reasoning behind it.

Having said that, While a DGW is a pretty good incentive to buy "big defenders" or big sides in general, DGW aside it really is about "projecting" your points 4-5 weeks ahead, bar injuries. Personally, I feel that the first 2-3 weeks are usually a combination of safe picks and "punts" such as marquee signings (Hazard eg.) and it really comes down to your preference in terms of how much of those you'd like over the first 3-4 Gameweeks.

Regarding going big at the back however, it really comes down to a risk/reward balance that you must establish on your own, based on form and injuries etc. For instance, Man United's backline was run ragged by Everton on opening day due to injury, and Fellaini punished Carrick playing at CB by making them concede.

The obvious "reward" is 4 points, but the metric (for me) still remains the same as I have done for the last few seasons: Home fixtures against promotion/probable relegation/sides in bad preseason form will be first pick. I went with Cech/A.Cole and Torres up front last season and my risk was ridiculous returns from offensive players I didn't have.

So my conclusion to the question posed is probably: Yes (personally), but constraints have to be set first to determine which ones I can permanently play/rotate with cheapies. All comes down to the fixture list at this point in time.

Doubt it,,,well if my experience last season ia anything to go by.....I played the entire season with a back to front team with three premium defenders and two cheapies and even went to four premium defenders at one point.....Kompany/Vertonghen/Vermaelen/Baines....I did quite well in terms of the rest of the team on a budget (no RVP/Suarez) but the whole package only yielded an average of 55pts per game...which i really think is probably about as good as can be expected with the premium defender route...

Great posting from you to. My position was which out of the premium defenders attracts you lot to fill up that one defender position. BerbaGod stressed on the short term fixtures but if you had to pick one and leave him for the season, which team would you trust the most?

That really would depend. Dynamics within a defence change quite abruptly, and it really is up to us to note how things have changed and react to them.

For instance (sorry for long examples), the "trend" or "theme" within Arsenal's defenders, as some might have noted, was the initial effect of Steve Bould, and how Arsenal defended very disciplined-ly and got a run of CS and only got goals on the counter; But the turning was point was when Man United showed up, people started realising that Arsenal were more error prone at home rather than away (there was a league table of errors that justified this somewhere on the web) and so people could react that way.

I mean with virtually no information, you can go down either one of 2 routes:

          (1) Depend on last year's data. The strengths: Pedigree of information. E.g.: We know that despite Man City having rotation-heavy lineups, you get something spot on, it's virtually a CS. Timing is key.

It's weakness: Lack of sensitivity towards trends, as mentioned above. Arsenal rarely made errors in the 11/12 season, and Thomas Vermaelen was even an attacking asset on top of Arsenal's CS potential.

          (2) My personal approach: We go short term, identify trends, and capitalise on them. Stoke at home was an example for last season, it wasn't exactly in neonlights in the sky, but everyone grabbed Bego @ 4.5 at some point or another based on "intuition" or bandwagons.

I hope I didn't ramble too much, I really wanna stress my stance on this and I hope that people also see the flip side of it

Great posting again. What will be noteworthy is 3 of the top 4 are in the reigns of a new manager now so a keen eye during pre season could help spot a bargain or two.

Good reply...Still debating whether to do the same back to front tactics this season...Kompany/Verm/Vert/Baines/ were as nailed on as it got at the beginning of the season...Whilst 55pts per GW for a defence heavy team was reasonable i'm not sure that it was all it could have been, given that many of the top teams struggled in defence for the first half of the season..i'm sure it could be pushed higher this time around...and, as you say, with a little attention to trends...

It depends what that 'premium' is.

It all comes down to assessing value in this game and half of that is obviously price, with the other half being points. I've no doubt The defenders you listed will offer high potential for points, but (as always) if I can get better value elsewhere in the defence and my money is better spent up front, I'll no doubt start with:

      'premium' defender
      mid-priced defender with good fixtures
      3 rotating cheapies

There's only a handful of people I've seen with four or five seasons of consecutive top 10k finishes and I take my hat off to them. That's more than luck.

But in most cases, people fluctuate. If the same person finishes top 3k one season and outside top 50k the next (which happens a lot) then they haven't suddenly lost their football predicting abilities. They're just not coming off. Something like the Lukaku hat-trick vs Man U mentioned in the article - that's a massive swing, but who actually plays for that?

There is absolutely no doubt about that.

The difference between finishing 40,000 & inside the top 1000, could be down to luck with your captain choice.

Two teams could be exactly the same all season, but the other guy just got lucky with his captain choices more often.

Choosing the correct captain could be, on average, about 10 points extra.

Over 38 weeks, that is 380 points.

I wont dismiss him like how people are saying no Michu this season. Will monitor, forward or mid.

no way. far too many options or possible options up top for next season: http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2013/06/11/sleeper-matt-jarvis/?hc_page=5&hc_refresh=468#hc_comment_4962334

      He still scored 18 goals.
Only Bale, Bentekke, Suarez and RvP scored more.

yes but as say a 8.5 striker for Swansea is he really worth it?

he will not be a striker next season.

He likes to play "in the hole" and make those darting runs into the box. His
off-the-ball movement or pace is not good enough for a no. 9.

          Of course.
How can you dismiss him if he's scored more than the likes of Lambert, Berbatov etc.

          Still a very lethal finisher.

He hates getting baps though and that hurts him massively.

He would most certainly have if Laudrup had left Swansea.

Now that Michael is staying,he will be there.

If hes a forward then I'm not going to touch him with a barge pole. Probably will be 9m and teams have a history of struggling to balance the league and the Europa league, so that could have a negative impact on his performance. He played all but 5 games up front or in the hole, so can't see him being classified as anything but a striker either.

I see a lot of this. Dismissing him way too early imo. Swansea is only going to improve as a team imo and if Michu keeps racking the points (i think he is a quality player), i see no reason to dismiss him.

OK perhaps I shouldn't have completely dismissed him. But I do think that there will be better options at bigger and more freescoring clubs for that kind of price bracket.

Another thing is that Swansea are in dire need for a striker, they only have Luke Moore and Shechter. Arguably his best position was behind the striker so he may not be fully OOP next season either as there are lots of reports linking them with strikers.

Does anyone else think they should bring back the grey reply buttons, when someone has replied to a comment? It's awfully hard to distinguish posts from their replies etc.

The reply buttons were green, but only if nobody had replied to that comment. After someone replied to it they turned grey.

I don't mind all the reply buttons in green. The grey between each post separates it well enough I reckon.
