634x258 Great Expectations

In a season where four of the previous campaign’s top six clubs are set to have a new man in charge, Roberto Martinez’s arrival at Everton is one of the most intriguing appointments in the Premier League this summer. A new formation and style of play is anticipated from the Toffees which could potentially bring a handful of their assets onto our radars – with this in mind, Seamus Coleman is the first subject of our pre-season “Great Expectations” articles.

Under previous manager David Moyes, Everton rarely, if ever, shifted from their default 4-4-1-1 formation but Martinez’s penchant for a three-man defence should boosts Coleman’s prospects considerably. Likely to line up on the right of the midfield four, with Leighton Baines utilised on the opposite flank, the Republic of Ireland international looks a real out of position prospect across the Fantasy games next time out..

Key Factors

  • Classified as a midfielder last term in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Coleman should this time be listed as a defender. His price is likely to remain kind – a cost similar to the previous season’s 5.0, or perhaps a slight increase to 5.5 looks on the cards given the Toffees resilience under Moyes in the final few months of 2012/13. With Baines expected to rise to 7.5, Coleman’s budget-friendly appeal looks set to offer strong value amongst the Everton defence if, as expected, Martinez rolls out a 3-4-3 formation.

  • Having fallen down the pecking order in 2011/12, Coleman re-established his position as a first-team regular last time out. His game time was slightly curtailed by hamstring and thigh problems in Moyes’ final term in charge, though with 24 of his 26 appearances coming courtesy of the first XI, he was more or less nailed on as the season unfolded – injury-free, he started each of the Toffees’ last 12 league fixtures in a run that harvested seven clean sheets, three assists and three bonus points.

  • Despite playing as a right-back, he afforded a decent level of creativity down the flank. Coleman supplied five assists over the course of the campaign – only two less than Baines, for example, despite the latter’s set-piece and corner duties, and the same number as Kevin Mirallas for the Toffees. While Baines was the number one defender for assists in FPL, only five other backline options provided more than Coleman, despite the fact he missed 12 of Everton’s league matches – even if Martinez begins with a four-man defence, then, there still looks plenty to be positive about when assessing Coleman’s chances.

  • His previous campaign as a midfielder – back in 2010/11 – highlights Coleman’s capabilities from a more advanced berth. Over 34 appearances, he found the net on four occasions and also supplied four assists, in addition to eight bonus points; with more top-flight experience behind him and license to bomb forward as Martinez looks to entertain, the 24-year-old could be primed for a significant Fantasy season before the inevitable reclassification as a midfield option for 2014/15.

First post since HC was implemented o.O

I know there was a bit of a laugh about the outcome of this last pre-season's articles, but I really am feeling optimistic about Jarvis and Coleman having read their respective articles. Caroll missed a fair few games and if WH somehow get him back again I think Jarvis could be immense value (also read WH are chasing Ba on loan but that just seems unrealistic). I think this could be the season I shoot out the blocks in my ML since hardly anyone else uses this site from there (it's my little secret weapon) 😀

Depends firstly whether Martinez wants to play him regularly (probably will). Also, if he is, say, 5.5 he is in that "awkward" middle price range for a defender where he is not really regarded as one of your premium defenders but neither is he a budget option.

I'd snap him up at 5.5 in a heartbeat if he was one of those players OOP. Hoping he does end up at RM. I'd regard him as one of my "premiums" for early season and spend the saved money in attack.

Yes, although based on last season he won't be OOP as a defender, cos that's where he played. May be a "wingback" based on Martinez' system so sort of between a defender and a midfielder like Boyce last year

At 5.5 he'd be far too much of a gamble for me, but I'd be tempted at 5.0. TBH, I don't think any defenders are even close to being essential, it all comes down to fixturs and the best way to make use of your 100m.

The title says First Team Manager.

Clearly Jose spoke with Schurrle during Ballacks charity game so he was obviously in the loop that the transfer was going ahead.

It adds more depth to the squad as a whole which we clearly lacked last season so I'm all for the move.

That's how it works with many clubs now though. Switching managers often might not be the best method, but if a club chooses that way then it is important that there is a more stable core looking after the transfers.

I'm beginning to admire Abramovich's transfer tactics. He has a lot of experience now, and a desire for players from the best national teams. Spanish players impressed him, Mata, Torres, Azpilicueta, Romeu. He sees the ascent of Germany and is buying German players, Marin, Schürrle, Belgium - they picked up Lukaku, Courtois and Hazard, Brazil, Luiz, Ramires, Oscar. I do not think it's a coincidence that Chelsea are one of the best cup teams; when you have world cup winners in your side, you'll be confident and have players that can take the pressure.

Obviously depending on prices/transfers/classifications, I would love a template team of:

    4.0 Keeper / DDG
    Hull defence/ Wilson/ Cheap Def X3
    Bale/ Hazard/ Walcott/ Ramirez/ Kacaniklic
    Aguero/ RVP/ Sturridge or Aspas

However I think this would be a lot over budget. Would probably go with one of RVP/Bale or go w.ith both and downgrade Hazard/Walcott

Depends on how the rest of United's defence is priced. If Evans is reasonable, i.e. 5.5 then I'll take a punt on him since the other CBs are getting on. Means I wont have to dish out 7.0 for United defence (assuming that will be DDG's starting price)

Two seasons ago, Silva went from a player who'd shown promise in his debut season to an absolute FPL beast. Last season exactly the same happened with Mata. So who will be this season's 'tiny midfield maestro who's taken a while to learn how to stop getting hacked'?

Cazorla is a prime candidate, but he was pretty hot all season anyway, and the same can be said for Hazard, so can they really push on even more? Then what about the likes of Kagawa, Coutinho and Holtby? More of a gamble, but they should be cheaper and could be real bargains.

i really think silva's break-out season was overrated, dempsey for example beat him by 25 points. the assisters don't get enough love, mata and cazorla broke the 200 point mark this/last season (it's that awkward point of the year where you're not sure if 12/13 counts as this season or last season 🙂 ) due to each getting into double figures for goals. i think that's almost what it boils down to in the end, and something which mean coutinho ends up as a silva who flirts with the 200 point mark, rather than a real heavy-hitter who can break through that mark

17 goals in a PL season for Dempsey though.. bit of an exception rather than the rule I'd say.

Silva offered incredible consistency, particularly for the first half / 2/3rds of that season and there's a lot to be said for consistency in FPL. He was however, never a genuine captain pick in my book because of his lack of goals. That's where the explosive nature of Cazorla / Mata comes in.

I'd say you need to strike a balance between consistency and explosive scorers. Cazorla got a load of 2s / 3s last season but plenty of double-digit scores too to match. Pair this with a consistent RVP and you were onto a winner. If Silva can regain some consistency, he'll be a top pick again.

silva definitely needs to up his goal tally, even a beastly 17 assists couldn't make him a true heavy-weight. the current bonus system simply means silva is a reliable 5-6 pointer at his best. it's all about goals, on current form that's all that can hold coutinho back it seems, being a prolific assister and simply a decent goalscorer.

6 goals and 17 assists over the course of the season for 184 points from a £9.5m start price? I'd say that's justification enough for a pick when you compare to Hazard's 9 goals and 16 assists this season for 190 points at the same price.

Agreed that to get into the Bale "Must-have" territory, he's going to need to double his goals tally even if his assists suffer a little.

Coutinho is an interesting one, big season coming up. I think there will be a good number of 7.5-8.5m midfielders worthy of consideration.

If your definition of a heavy hitter is a player who scores over 200 points, then you're restricting it to a very small pool of players. Only 5 managed it in the season just ended and I think it was 3 the season before.

Dempsey also had four more starts and played over 500 minutes more than Silva that season. But really, this is comparing apples and pears. To put it crudely, Dempsey was a goalscorer and Silva was a goal creator.

for sure, i would have ideally included that but i havent owned dempsey or silva this season so couldn't check their history pages (really miss the transfers page 🙁 )

the other end of the argument is silva had a serious head-start on dempsey and bale, something crazy like 40 points after 10 weeks, then the other 2 simply by being capable of reaching double-figures for goals overtook then stormed ahead.

my point really boils down to goals v assists as you mention at the end. i don't think it's possible anymore to break 200 points (what i personally consider a heavy-hitter, or at least be on course for that points per game/minute wise like a waloctt last season) as an assister. i think it was possible in the fabregas era due to the old bp systsem. now it really is almost a case of 5-8 point goals v 3 point assists

              http://fantasy.premierleague.com/stats/elements/

As I alluded to above, I think your definition of a heavy hitter is a bit narrower than mine. At 190 points last season, I would consider a Hazard a heavy hitter, and he 'only' scored 9 goals to go with his 16 assists.

9 goals is fine, and looks like his lower limit too in terms of future prospects. silva is still working his way up to this, he's showed at times for spain that he's capable of it, maybe pelligrini can coax it out of him

Yeah very true.. if Silva couldn't break 200 points in 11/12, he probably does need the goals to do so. It's just the value you place on consistency and whether than can justify his price tag. Good discussion anyway

I do have high expectations for Coleman. He has made huge improvements in his game and is much better than the Coleman of 2011/2012! I'm sure you all saw his MOTM performance against England, and he still stood out as a top player even against Spain, particularly when he made Alba look like a fool down the right wing.

I'm sure not many will agree but I'd take him over Walker or Johnson any day. His attacking runs down the right have also become more fruitful in late last season so he's certainly a player I'll be looking to get in at some stage.

I think 3-5-2 could be the way to go next year. Lot of midfielders to choose from and until the transfers go through I cant see many striker options at the moment:

Midfield: Mata, Hazard, Bale, Oscar, Kagawa, Coutinho, Ramirez, Walcott, Fellaini, Navas, Ben Arfa, Snodgrass, Kacaniklic, Michu, Lennon, Nolan.

Forwards: Aguero, RVP, Sturridge, Benteke (maybe Lukaku)

Yes but until these deals actually happen it looks as though 3-5-2 is the way to go. Obviously if/when Cavani and Higuain go through then it balances things out more.

Michu will be a striker, and I wouldn't consider a few of those options (Navas, Ramirez, Lennon). Up front there's Lambert, Defoe, RvW and whoever Chelsea eventually sign.

Trouble is though that cheap 5th forwards tend to cost more than cheap 5th mids, and are a nightmare to move on itf they don't work out / pull a hammy in GW1 (Silvan Ebanks Blake you git).

Having said that, by the looks of it there's a spectacular dearth of talent amongst the promoted teams this year, which may throw up a couple of cheap starters.

But if fixtures and price fall kindly, they could be gold. Take your point though, getting 15 players for 100m that are balanced and strong for the first 5/6 fixtures is tough.

Still, prefer to have all this info at hand come GW1.

    Schurrle not again
    Panic at the Isco
    The Cahills have eyes
    The Big Lewandowski
    A Christmas Carroll

I reckon if Isco moves to the PL i'll go for that one. Which one is your favorite and have you got any ideas?

Basically we're watching reputation rise each day and folk won't go up a level until we've gone back and examined where their votes have come from to check there's been no buddying up etc...it's all very transparent behind the scenes. Regardless of the badge, if you're gaining rep, your vote is carrying more weight - the badge is just a flag to make that public.

I think there should be tables available to us all, so we could see where our rep ranking is, as we go.
