Great Expectations

Great Expectations – Seamus Coleman

In a season where four of the previous campaign’s top six clubs are set to have a new man in charge, Roberto Martinez’s arrival at Everton is one of the most intriguing appointments in the Premier League this summer. A new formation and style of play is anticipated from the Toffees which could potentially bring a handful of their assets onto our radars – with this in mind, Seamus Coleman is the first subject of our pre-season “Great Expectations” articles.

Under previous manager David Moyes, Everton rarely, if ever, shifted from their default 4-4-1-1 formation but Martinez’s penchant for a three-man defence should boosts Coleman’s prospects considerably. Likely to line up on the right of the midfield four, with Leighton Baines utilised on the opposite flank, the Republic of Ireland international looks a real out of position prospect across the Fantasy games next time out..

Key Factors

  • Classified as a midfielder last term in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Coleman should this time be listed as a defender. His price is likely to remain kind – a cost similar to the previous season’s 5.0, or perhaps a slight increase to 5.5 looks on the cards given the Toffees resilience under Moyes in the final few months of 2012/13. With Baines expected to rise to 7.5, Coleman’s budget-friendly appeal looks set to offer strong value amongst the Everton defence if, as expected, Martinez rolls out a 3-4-3 formation.

  • Having fallen down the pecking order in 2011/12, Coleman re-established his position as a first-team regular last time out. His game time was slightly curtailed by hamstring and thigh problems in Moyes’ final term in charge, though with 24 of his 26 appearances coming courtesy of the first XI, he was more or less nailed on as the season unfolded – injury-free, he started each of the Toffees’ last 12 league fixtures in a run that harvested seven clean sheets, three assists and three bonus points.

  • Despite playing as a right-back, he afforded a decent level of creativity down the flank. Coleman supplied five assists over the course of the campaign – only two less than Baines, for example, despite the latter’s set-piece and corner duties, and the same number as Kevin Mirallas for the Toffees. While Baines was the number one defender for assists in FPL, only five other backline options provided more than Coleman, despite the fact he missed 12 of Everton’s league matches – even if Martinez begins with a four-man defence, then, there still looks plenty to be positive about when assessing Coleman’s chances.

  • His previous campaign as a midfielder – back in 2010/11 – highlights Coleman’s capabilities from a more advanced berth. Over 34 appearances, he found the net on four occasions and also supplied four assists, in addition to eight bonus points; with more top-flight experience behind him and license to bomb forward as Martinez looks to entertain, the 24-year-old could be primed for a significant Fantasy season before the inevitable reclassification as a midfield option for 2014/15.

    True story.

I am in the process of hiring a new employee. Had interviews lined up all day today. After meeting 5 candidates, I met an individual who had a decent resume. Our interview went reasonably well until I noticed at the end of his CV he listed his hobbies. One of them was "playing fantasy football". When I asked which league he followed, he responded "fpl of course". That was all I needed to hear. I hired him without further questions. Ironically, he also frequently visits this site.

I just saw Jonty's post on point hits and I have a theory about FPL which I think is at the heart of the issue.

I'm sure you've all heard FPL is a marathon and not a sprint. It's not entirely true.

The first 10 gameweeks dictate your entire season.

Look at the top 10 overall. How many of them were outside the top 1000 after the first 10 weeks? It's all a knock-on effect.

If you have a hot start and picked good players like Michu, Hazard, RVP early, you would have no need to use transfers to get those guys in. Instead, you can hold off on the point hits, trade some of your less pivotal players (3rd choice defender, 5th choice mid etc) and consolidate your lead. Meanwhile, the chasing pack are floundering, and in trying to make up ground, need to take point hits to get the players the best already have in.

But you have wildcards right? Yes but those are essentially a mega transfer that you have two of. Smart players who get off to a good start can hold onto those wildcards and use them to even further extend their lead. The concept is still the same.

Point hits I feel are important for those that don't get off to a good start. The whole point of taking a hit is to get players in early to catch up on bandwagons that have left without you. Therefore, it's not fair to compare to the overall best and say "oh they didn't take point hits so that's the way to go". Because it's not. It's because logically they had no need to take point hits since they jumped on the players you're getting in on those point hits already.

So in conclusion if you pick the best players from the start you will have a massive advantage and points hits are for bandwagons.

It sounds harsh put that way but yes. Think of the point hits you took. You wanted a player because you think they're heating up, lots of people are buying them, they're going up in price.

You have to take the hit now because they have FUL NOR up next and because if you don't, you can't afford to buy player X and will miss the points if you wait until next week to get them in.

      Good post.
One of the often over-looked issues with hits is the opportunity cost of not taking a hit (economists / MBAs will know what I'm talking about). When you take a hit, you benefit from the new player's stats from then on. Furthermore, that move is on top of any other moves you make. In principal therefore, taking a hit early, if chosen well could come with a greater opportunity cost (or gain, actually) because you hold the player for longer.

        Economics 😀

So you take a hit to bring someone in. The opportunity cost is 4 points extra. So Baker is right, the earlier you take a hit, the more likely you are to gain on that -4 and end up making a "points profit" on the player. That's why everyone is so reluctant is take hits towards the end of the season, there isn't enough time to make it up.

But i do agree with your point, my main learning for this year was . . . Hold onto your WC for a long as possible, as there are dgw a plenty due to fa cup feb onwards.

I'm going for same strategy this year (hopefully)

      Superb, every paragraph is gold.

Remember a discussion in the podcast where they looked at an FFS member who was in the running to win (can't remember if it was Evs) and saw he'd started off in the top 1000 in GW1.

I'm going for early hits and bandwagons this year unless they're truly stupid punts. My mistake last year was to get the order wrong - tried to avoid hits early on.

Yep. That's the way I see it. Do all your homework pre-season. A hot start is ridiculously important.

But if it doesn't go your way, take those hits, get your ship straight and go from there.

Yep maximize outcome at every point, following rigid rules doesn't get you anywhere when they are inappropriate for your situation.

Initial intel is so, so important. In this U21 tournament I had a terrible start (2.5k of 6k) , worse than even my FPL start last year, and despite learning fast and catching up to rank 500 in two weeks, that has probably cost me.

To be perfectly frank, I'm probably going to have to religiously cram all the new players over a fortnight before launch to avoid missing out on the next Michu, who I didn't have a clue about last year.

This highlights (again) how much luck is involved. Sure, people were extolling the virtues of Michu last pre-season, but there were many also extolling the virutes of N'Zogbia, Kagawa, Granero, Anita, Miyaichi, Graham etc. and a lot of this would have been based on detailed research of past matches, pre-season form, statistics etc.

It's so easy to say get your team right at the start, but doing this is bloody difficult, even with the extensive resources now at our disposal.

And even if your detailed research comes good and you manage to fill your team with the right Michus and Fellainis of the player pool, how do you know this wasn't just down to luck? Take Cisse for example, his 2012/13 was pretty dismal compared to his 2011/12 season. He's a classic case of a player outperforming his 'normal' level of abilities and reverting back to the mean.

The importance of luck is never in doubt, something which hindsight usually negates yes, but personally I know I put much more effort into watching matches in the new season as opposed to doing pre-tournament research. If there is a research element to the points, and I'm sure there is some, I am bottoming out on it.

Cisse certainly performed poorer than the previous season, but a fair part of the season was spent stuck out wide with Ba the main man which is the opposite of the previous season. Consider him after Ba left and he did OK.

              Without a doubt.

You need good luck to pick the right players out the gate and this in turn influences how well you do disproportionately to the rest of the season. A good first 5 weeks is worth a lot more than a good last 5 weeks.

Of course a great start helps but it's not essential. You can make up a lot of ground around the Xmas time of the season.
      E.g.

No. 9 overall didn't start amazingly, 330k after 4GWs, 8k at GW10. One good GW at that point made him go from 8k to 650.

Christmas is usually when I come alive, I think it's more hard work than anything as you carefully assess rotation, and every DGW is an opportunity to outrun casuals as they put less effort in.

It's yet another hunch that needs to be backed statistically but would take a big load of work.

Well it depends. If you use a wildcard early and very well, you can make up lots of ground for sure.

Personally, if I'm not in the top 10,000 by GW 10 I more or less know I won't have any chance of finishing in the top 100. And my goal is to win the whole thing every year and bar that finish in the top 10,000.

Don't mean to criticise, because it was a great post with lots of good points, but I had a look and 5 of the top 10 were outside the top 1k after at GW10. All it takes is two great GWs in a row anywhere before ~GW20 and you can easily go from 5k to within challenging for the top 10 come the end of the season.

Totally agree with this and it's the most important thing I've learned. I ended up finishing on a great rank for me but I'm left thinking what might've been if I'd gotten off to a good start. Especially with the DGW1 this season gone by featuring Chelsea, utterly underestimated and so started off 50+ points behind.

Great post! Have an up-vote my friend.

I remember at the start of last season the teams with Bego/Jaas, Nolan, Petric, Hazard, Fellaini and Michu to name a few instantly gained an advantage over everyone else. To reiterate your point, undoubtedly, if you gain a good start you will be in a far stronger position for the rest of the season and will less likely have to use an early wildcard (like I did).

I dunno, but it's entirely possible.

Perhaps the key thing here isn't rank but the number of points you are behind. If you are more than 200 points behind the pace, you will undoubtedly have a huge hill to climb.

Also, there's a reason you're behind. Almost always, it's because you picked inferior players. Which means you need to take point hits to replace them with better ones in a timely fashion.

          Yeah.
Without wanting to appear a pedant I have to point out your original proposition was that you had to be in the top 1000- agree that points is a better yardstick to employ.
If the guy still had his WC plus the winter break WC 150 points deficit say would be possible to make up in the second half of the season.

Getting off to a flying start in the U21 fantasy, by chance I have to admit, I have realized the same.
You need a flying start right out of the box. If you don't get it you have the choice of either playing the early wild card or welcome some heavy hitting over a few GWs. I also think like many are pointing out here, that you can catch up big time in a few GWs around Christmas time or whenever, so maybe one shouldn't panic too much in the start.

Say you get off to a bad start, and after 2 GWs you are 60 points behind the top 100, maybe you should save the wildcard and do a 12points hit, straighten your team up and work on catching up 72 points instead of 60..

Sigh, Lewandowski trying his hardest to leave Dortmund. I understand Munich are offering more money no doubt but Dortmund aren't exactly tiny, really while it is a better team out of the last 3 Bundasligas Dortmund have won 2 of them. Quite disappointed since I'm convinced both he and Gotze are going for the money. That said they're only young lads, suppose I can't expect much else. I reckon we should sell him before his contract runs out, he wants to leave so lets just cash in on him now.

The Bunndesliga is so unpredictable other than Bayern though, a few years ago Dortmund were'nt anywhere near the team they are now, teams like Hamburg and Wolfsburg were challenging Bayern instead. I don't think you can under-estimate how big a club Bayern is in Germany. Joining Bayern guarantees they'll always be playing for one of the top 2 or 3 teams in the league.

The whole issue is that Bayern simply throw money at players from these teams to gut them and make sure they are the only big team. I think the difference is that Dortmund have focused on buying talent cheap and developing it as well as possible. If Klopp can keep it up then I really think Dortmund will stay as a big side.

As suggested by 4vets, for curiosity's sake allow me to present Butters' team.

128 points lost to hits, 7 -8s and one -12.

    Rank 126.

Probably an outlier, but an interesting one nevertheless.

If you decide to go with 2 mid/heavy hitters in gk & def and rest cheap...would you buy both in defence or get a big gk and a defender?

I'd go for both in defence. Reason being that the sort of heavy hitter defenders I would go for are those with attacking threat, which GKs don't have.

      Except Howard.

It's a hard enough thing to judge. Realistically the tightest defences will probably have the goalies who have to do the least work and therefore may not earn as many save points (I could be wrong of course). So the defenders offer a source of attacking returns too but you have to pick very carefully of course. It's tough to call though, I'm not sure if I'll bother with expensive defensive combos at the start of the season at least.

2 defs because there is so little correlation between price and value for GKs - or for DEFs if we're honest 🙂

But its overkill to get 2 high-priced def/gk at the outset. Cash is so tight at the beginning that you're better rotating cheap gks and defs, with 3 at the back and spending your cash in mid/fwds.

My hope is that it all settles down over the coming days and becomes the 'new normal' the same way we all got used to the old one.

Places like Reddit work off comment rating and seem to do fine.

But it might not be the same kind of place for sure.

A lot of the quick-fire banter has gone.

It has been replaced by a lot of serious posts, many interesting I agree. But less like a discussion forum, more like a newspaper.

I find it odd too. It all seems a bit... tentative. Anything I've seen has been posts that contain good information of course but are careful about not getting anybody's back up which in football is pretty damn difficult. There are of course improvements but I feel a little less comfortable... That said I've probably never been the most popular of posters on here so I reckon I have a slight fear of being down voted into oblivion...

Don't think you'll have any significant problem with downvotes Somalion.

I think it's interesting, the main risk is that a certain type of interesting dominates (the statty type) instead of the other aspects that make it nice being on a site, such as real life, banter, and inexplicably whimsical tosh.

I think it's more that there is less of the banter and jokes being posted since the introduction of HC because people feel tentative about posting it due to some perceived notion that it's no longer welcome here. I don't think (and I hope) that's not the case.

And for those of us who do like stats, the tables have turned somewhat! It used to be my statty posts that got lost in the endless fug of off topic banter and noise.

I hope we can find a balance, just give it a few days to settle down.

Cheers Isacki but that's where my worry stems from because I don't really have the time to go through stats or anything like that so the only thing I could try and bring is some banter. So if that winds up as less important, maybe not downvoted but not exactly seen as a very useful or good poster. Ah I don't know, still adjusting 😛

Yeah a very good point. That's my hope, I suppose last season there were so many new people on that plenty of times when I'd post something it'd be lost. I remember one time doing up an actual stats thing and posting it something like 4 times before it was even noticed. So there was a bit of apprehension about disappearing posts 😀

There isn't anything to worry about. Similar rules about being polite and friendly still apply. Also it's a real misconception that we are against funny posts and personalities. Us mods are all part of the community too and were brought to it by its humour. I've been really pleased that some older posters are coming back. The atmosphere has improved, they tell me, more welcoming.

Ah I don't want to sound unappreciative Jonty, you guys have done a stellar job and really this kind of dedication is great. The problem for geriatric posters like myself before was that posts got lost too quickly in the mire of RMT's and general childish nonsense and attention seeking.

When i first started using this website in 2000-something it was one of the few places you could interact with fans of different clubs in a somewhat friendly atmosphere and just discuss football as a whole, not just fantasy football. That got lost in the last few years. I personally think these changes will improve the general standard of posting and so i'm all for it. Let's hug it out.

I'm still up for a good 4am wum though, obviously.

Think Chelsea will go with a conventional CF as it's not Mourinho's style to play false 9, and he currently has Ba, Torres and Lukaku with Cavani rumoured to join.

Schurrle another goal threat on the left I guess.

Schurrle is a much better player than the likes of Moses and the like.

He can play CF or LW really well, and in truth, if Oscar gets off to a slow start, could get punted in exchange for the direct running of Schurrle.

Also, we don't know what Mourinho thinks of any of the current crop of players. For all we know, he'll offload Mata or play him in a different position.

They generally started at £5m last season.

After the season they just had there should be a drop in price but maybe not with Reither having a good individual campaign and Stekelenburg signing.

WBA had an average season defensively so I hope they're priced accordingly. If they have any 4.5 nailed on, I'd take one.

Norwich I fear might be priced up due to their home CS, again 4.5 max.

Swansea will probably be too expensive to be worth it.

Fulham seemed worse than usual last year - maybe signing Amorebieta might help them and getting some stability in the LB position. Definitely wouldn't get Amorebieta due to his disciplinary disaster record, Riether would be the one if below 5.5

West Ham again 4.5 max but think there will be problems getting cover as the fullbacks are rotated and center backs might reach the 5.0 mark.

In short, I'll be looking to Cardiff and maybe one other promoted team unless we get some unexpectedly cheap ones here.

What do you guys think chances are for Baines to remain the only defender on spot-kicks? He will classified as premium defender (7.5 probably) but if Martinez takes his penalty duties he is not worth it.

I don't think managers can take spot kicks 😉

Seriously though, Baines is a big-time player, but with a new manager and Bale and RVP's prices likely to inflate, I may have no choice but to reserve judgement on Baines anyway.

Can't count on anyone arriving at Arsenal because they're so tight, but seems like we've made a successful bid. I think he would basically be a Diaby replacement/improvement. He gets stick for being physical as if he's not technically good - he is. He brings the ball forward well. And of course his physical side is another option to get into defences.

One massive plus about HC, it's making the long wait for FPL to open easier and at the same time providing some useful debate. Reckon we'll see a lot of high ranks around these parts this coming season.

It just doesn't seem possible for him to become #1 (in the sense I could pick him) because he's strictly a CF (he fell out with AVB after he tried to use him on the wing in training) and so are both Torres and Ba. If Cavani is really arriving it's all over bar the shouting. Though would think City have a shout with him.

Mourinho did apparently try to sign Lukaku before, so maybe there's a glimmer of hope.

I just can.t see a way into the team for him...He's class and no doubt but then so is/was Ba and any other signings would just relagate Lukaku to bench fodder...at best. He's too good for that.
