Pre-Season

Sleeper – Sergio Aguero

There was no better way for Sergio Aguero to stay in the forefront of our Fantasy thinking ahead of last season’s kick-off. The Argentine’s last-gasp title-winning goal against QPR will go down in legend as one of the Premier League’s defining moments – with Martin Tyler’s stunned reaction providing a worthy accompaniment from the commentary box, it was the stuff that Sky Sports marketing men must have dreamed of:

His contribution that day summed up Aguero’s debut season at the Etihad. Arriving from Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2011, his impact was instant from the moment he climbed off the bench to bag a brace in a home rout of Swansea on the opening Gameweek of the campaign. By the time his sweetly-struck strike whistled past Rob Green to clinch the crown, Aguero had racked up 23 goals, nine assists and 30 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus points, for a total of 211 points.

Highly priced across the Fantasy games prior to the previous season’s kick-off, Aguero’s exploits ensured he remained a popular pick but the Argentine lasted just 13 minutes of the season opener against Southampton before sustaining a knee injury. With Carlos Tevez affording Fantasy managers a cheaper route into Roberto Mancini’s attack, Aguero was shipped out by almost half a million FPL managers by the time Gameweek 3 arrived and although he returned to the first-team fold by the end of September, the previous season’s momentum was never recaptured.

Despite supplementing 22 league starts with eight sub appearances, Aguero mustered a mere 12 goals as City’s failed to recapture the attacking swagger that wrestled the title from United so spectacularly. With three assists and 16 FPL bonus points also accrued, the Argentine proved a hugely frustrating Fantasy performer and managed just three sets of double figures over the course of the campaign. Finishing on 121 points – 90 less than his first term on these shores – Aguero’s tally was bettered by both Tevez (169) and Edin Dzeko (130) as his season, like City’s, stuttered to a meek conclusion.

The Prospects

With Mancini now gone and Manuel Pellegrini finally installed in the hot seat, City’s acquisition of Fernandinho and Jesus Navas suggests they are determined to go on the offensive a little more often next time round. Having scored 93 goals in their title-winning campaign, they found the net just 66 times last term as opponents found a way of dealing with Mancini’s somewhat one-paced approach.

The new man in charge is likely to opt for a 4-2-2-2 or 4-2-3-1 formation, though either way Aguero looks key to City’s fortunes, while the likes of Dzeko could be offloaded as Pellegrini opts for improved mobility up top. A price drop across the Fantasy games for the former Atletico man seems inevitable after his disappointing showing – having started last term at 11.5, a slip to 11.0 looks realistic and while Tevez may begin cheaper at 10.0 or 10.5, his compatriot’s keen eye for goal holds the greater potential.

With David Silva, Samir Nasri, Yaya Toure and Navas all vying for attention in the City midfield, Aguero seems the safest – and most explosive – Etihad option on next term’s agenda, providing Pellegrini can reignite their attacking drive. In terms of frontline options, Robin Van Persie’s exploits on the other side of Manchester is likely to earn the Dutchman a 13.5 price tag and with many Fantasy managers looking to cut corners with their initial budgets, Aguero could well prove a tempting alternative if Wednesday’s fixture list reveal an opening spell that falls kindly in City’s favour.

  1. Is balance within your squad vital next year?

Only a passing visit but I thought I'll leave you with this question.

Has the general rule of balance within your squad changed?

Is the Uber defence now the way to go?

    Is 3-5-2 the new 3-4-3?

Will we have to disregard balance to incorporate the big guns next year (RVP, Bale, Mata etc)

What is everyone perceived balance split within your squad now?

Is rotating GKs a valid option next year?

      Uber defence early on.

Will probably be going 3-4-3, there are generally more budget strikers than midfielders that merit attention.

9m gk, 23m def, 68m for 2 big hitting strikers, 1 budget striker, 1 4.5m mid and whatever's left after Bale for the other 3 mids.

Cheap rotating keepers is definitely the way to go.

Uber defence is now the way to go IMO, especially given how the quality of defending has dropped in recent years. You also have to factor in the big boys and try to incorporate at least 4 into your attack, at a high cost.

      2 x Rotating keepers.
      1 x Expensive, 4 x Uber cheap.
      Bale, 1 x Exp, 2 x Mid-Priced, 1 x Uber cheap.
      Van Persie, 1 x Exp, 1 x Mid-Priced.

        Something like this?

        5.0 + 4.5 = 9.5
        6.5 + 4.5 + 4.5 + 4.5 + 4.0 = 24.0
        12.0 + 9.0 + 7.0 + 6.5 + 4.5 = 39.0
        13.0 + 8.0 + 6.5 = 27.5

        9.5 + 24.0 + 39.0 + 27.5 = 100.0

I was messing around with some predictions, and on average my expected prices are really high for next season.

With my price predictions, I came up with this:

          Boruc Krul
          Coleman Demel Turner Wilson Hudson
          Bale Hazard Coutinho Mirallas Noble
          Lambert Benteke Berbatov

Rotating gks is less important towards the end of the season when you have the team value to do it and rotation because a factor further up the pitch. At that point I'd rather have the 1 big gk. Likewise I'd like to have the majority of my budget in midfield towards the end of the season when team value is higher and fitness becomes a factor. But I'm likely to start with a lot of my budget up top.

Same as usual 3-4-3 because there are always good value, constant mid priced strikers.

Keeper rotation will be determined on the pricing options.

I always play 3-4-3, formation of choice last 4 years. I see nothing to change this.

I used to have rotating keepers, this year I didn't and had DDG, Bego, foster, DDG, then hart...

Early on I think rotating GKs and cheap DEF is good. It's hard to know which teams exactly will be solid, it also means you can cash in on the price rises e.g. Begovic and Jussi from last year.

I'm firmly in the 3-4-3 crowd as well.

I've yet to be convinced there has or ever will be the one way to go. What fits one year is quite likely to change the following as players leave and join from different divisions and leagues.

I'm sure someone can come up with what would have been the ultimate starting 15, transfer dates for the best scores for each GW and the top WC times, for last year.
I bet the same would be hugely different for next season.

There must be almost endless variations on spending 100 mil on 15 players.

I think I'll just stick with the pin, thanks Tommy. 😉

It's going to be hard to predict our lineup. If we sell Suarez that should open up another 50 mil which means that after signing Mignolet and selling Reina (I expect to happen) we should have about 65 mil to spend.

Mkhitaryan for 20 mil and an expensive defender would still leave us with another 20 mil.

Alberto would cost what? 8? Leaving another 12 for a bargain. 😉

They interact quite a bit especially in big Marvel crossover event story lines. The recentish 'civil war' plot is a good example. Lots of avengers / xmen tie ins as well. Can be a bit if a continuity mare though.

Legislating is difficult - every country passes new laws every year to remedy perceived defects in the current system.

Interpreting legislation is difficult - we have a court of appeal and a supreme court to resolve different interpretations of the law at previous hearings.

If you have criticisms of the rules the best thing to do is email Mark or Jonty, if you have criticisms of the interpretation of the rules in a particular case the best thing to do is email Mark or Jonty.

I suspect everyone agrees that moderation is necessary in some scenario, once that's a given we're into when, where and why, and your best chance of getting your voice heard on that score is to email Mark or Jonty with a specific issue or complaint. I don't believe Ronh's question here is any more likely to yield a productive result than asking a random sample of people "what do you think about law?" - it's too vague, and means different things to different people.

Yaya got a surprising total of 142 points last year, 5 behind Silva and 27 behind Tevez.

He finished priced 8.2, wonder if he will stay at a high price as a result - 8.0?

I'd only go for him if he plays higher as a result of Fernandinho arriving, but my suspicion is that Fernandinho will play as the higher of the two central midfielders if they play 4-2-3-1 and Yaya deeper, as Fernandinho played that position at Shakhtar.

"Luck" and do we analyse too much?

A paradoxical post by all accounts - but here goes.

There are a number of 'ghost teams' which score very highly. In fact, far higher than many teams that are subject to captaincy rotations and transfers.

Returns were generated on a number of theoretical ghost teams with at least three of RVP, Mata, Suarez, Bale, Michu Feillani and Walcott, with captaincies remaining on one of them all season. Some interesting results when placed in 100 randomly selected mini leagues of more than 20 members. In over 50% of cases: matching one randomly selected ghost team with one randomly selected mini league, the ghost teams showed a performance within one standard deviation above the league mean. This number greatly increases when the captain choice is further restricted to one of RVP (86%)or Bale (65%)

The standard deviation is the square root of the variance in a set of statistical data; crudely, how spread out the data is. Almost all 'naturally occurring' data conforms to a normal distribution, resembling a bell curve, whether it be heights of plants, or gcse results. In more 'competitive' mini leagues - those with more active members - this variance, and consequently the standard deviation, is less (not as less as you'd think, interestingly - need to do more work on this) than in leagues with lots of inactive members.

In others words, if you are vaguely sensible with your early season choices, stick RVP as captain you can look back 38 gameweeks later and find you're 'right in the mix'. With of course, a bit of luck.

Saw too many ghost teams with decent rank to ignore this season.

There were also a fair number that had done very few transfers, and the transfers they made hadn't been huge successes; they were working off a very dependable core.

Must have been some considerably automated analysis here, thanks for doing it.

Thanks for your replies everyone, those two posts from earlier were excellent and back up/render moot various elements of my own!

Jonty, the data was self generated, ripping data from the fpl site. Work on it started during easter and I ran it through initially Excel for some rough work, then Matlab and C++ after the seasons end. My web based coding isn't the greatest so pulling data straight from mini leagues and fpl was at times very crass, courtsey of greasemonkey, various element inspectors and some pencil and paper.

      Possible flaws in the methodology:

Generating the random ghost teams churns out a huge number of permutations. Running another algorithm to reduce to ensure the random selection for matching can have its own flaws, although I fairly certain this wasn't a cause for error. The greatest possible chance for error would be in calculating the points total itself, again, with some coding, autosubs can be worked out, along with C to VC issues. Fairly simple to work autosubs as you just pull the minutes played value and bung it in.

I was surprised at the bale (C) resulting in a significantly lower % 'success' than RVP and I'd be inclined to investigate it further. The basic arithmetic shows RVP generating more points than Bale as captain. With reference to the significance of the difference: an instinctive guess is that a consistent captain is better than an explosive captain, which is going to be more significant as you churn out a large amounts of data.

      Nice post mathmo

I find the luck question very amusing tbh. I mean if you started with the teams posted in the two links above and made no changes then yes I would count that as extremely lucky but what you should be looking at is what score would the team you started with last season have got if you left it alone?

Surely the difference between what you got and what your team left idle would gave got is the difference the skill/judgement/knowledge is worth? (I know this is not strictly true as if you were picking a team for the season you would use different criteria for selection than your short termist gw1 picks)

It would be interesting as an experiment to see how a team you pick to last the season does with no transfers or capt changes compared to your team which you change all season based on informed decisions on form and fixtures.

        Thanks Dino,

It would be definitely be interesting to compare peoples start teams with their final score. I agree with you on the selection policy: GW1 teams work in the same way as having a wildcard, so rarely do people field 11 (15) with the prospect of keeping them for the entire season. Short term-ism does tend to reign supreme, especially with the myth of the the strong start, and is only exacerbated by the presence of 'easy' fixtures and double gameweeks. Few people would have brought in reading players if it was not for the fact they had a double gameweek to begin with, for example.

A seasons keeper team is based on player performance over the last 30-50 games, a managed team bases it on the last 3-5. And so the age old debate reigns! After all, the statement 'form is temporary, class is permanent' just boils down to a function of returns over time; the period of which determines what part of the adage applies to the situation in question.

Only just seen this thanks to Jonty's article. I like what you have done here, and just wondered if there is anyway you could produce a visualisation of the scores of the ghost teams. I would suggest a population density curve would suffice.

Its scary to think how much of this is down to picking a correct team from the go. I wonder how many of the players in your "best" ghost teams were even big scorers in the first few weeks of fpl, such that even WC'ing in the form players wouldnt aid you in selecting a strong squad, in hindsight.

Isacki how long do you think it will last ? Lyon managed a similar set up for several years but their dominance came to an end eventually. It was not due to PSG and Monaco because Marseille were on the rise before PSG came.

My guess is as good as yours Adam, still learning a lot about the financial side of the game. Maybe being secure in the CL spots helps Porto, top two qualify automatically and third place goes into third qualifying round. Hard to see them ever dropping out of there.

I don't think clubs should be allowed to speak about players in such a manner in the media. I don't really see the difference between approaching a player privately and declaring your interest and approaching him in public by making a comment to the press. The effect is surely the same ?

He has set pieces and penalties so he'll always rack up points but he's more of an assist man rather than a goal getter in open play because of his painful lack of pace combined with intelligent awareness of the pacey players around him and excellent passing ability.

Take for example, if Walcott is priced 9 or thereabouts, everyone and their dog would have him.

I think the balance is right. To do one or the other would effectively just be changing the budget. I prefer it when or 2 players are underpriced but initially we'll have to pick players of all abilities in our squad and I like that.

Hey guys, can you explain to me the comment sorting?

What is the difference between discussion ratings and sticky comments?

    Thanks

      Hi John,

From what I understand, the ratings system allows forum users to vote individual posts up or down., resulting in a cumulative rating for a post. Presumably the intention is that disruptive and irrelevant posts are not voted for, or voted negatively, while constructive or interesting posts are voted up, to reward both the post and the user who posted them. So if you filter by rating, you should in theory get the more interesting and constructive topics and filter out arguments/spam/trolling.

Sticky's are determined by the moderators, who may decide that a particular topic is of interest to the whole community, and will therefore benefit from the greater visibility. I assume this is due to potentially interesting topics being lost in the stream of comments.

      Hope this helps.
