Scout Report – Dejan Lovren

Mauricio Pochettino made his first signing of the summer transfer window on Friday by acquiring Dejan Lovren from French outfit Lyon for a fee believed to be in the region of £8.5m. The Croatian international centre-half arrives at St Mary’s on a four-year deal and was reported to have been on the radar of a number of European clubs, with the likes of Tottenham and Inter both rumoured to have shown interest:

Although the Saints boss, along with chairman Nicola Cortese, is working on a number of deals, strengthening his defence was a priority and the Argentine has snapped up Lovren with more than a couple of weeks until pre-season training gets underway. Speaking to the club’s official website, the new boy went on to say:

“I’ve spoken a lot with the Chairman and the coach, and this is a great project. They told me a lot of positive things, and I know the history of the Club. It’s a big club and I’m very happy that I can be a part of it. After three-and-a-half years in France, it was a dream to play in the Premier League. Now the dream has come true. I have it in my mind to do something big, and I see the same thing in the Club. We are a young team, and I am a young player also so I hope I will stay here for a long time.”

The History

A product of the NK Karlovac youth set-up, Lovren was signed by Dinamo Zagreb in 2004. He made his senior debut as a 16-year-old a couple of years later before being loaned out to Croatian club Inter Zaprešić – over back-to-back seasons, he became a first-team regular and scored once over 50 league appearances.

Returning to his parent club for the start of the 2008/09 campaign, Lovren racked up 36 appearances over the next season-and-a-half before being acquired by Lyon midway through the 2009-10 campaign for around €8 million. Over his four years with the Ligue 1 outfit, Lovren gradually established himself as a key figure at the back and registered two goals and a pair of assists over 72 appearances. Last term in particular, though, he had a tendency to fall foul of the referees and was sent off three times – one more than the entire Southampton side over 2012/13.

Lovren has represented his country from Under 17 to Under 21 level on a total of 55 occasions, scoring six times. The centre-half has also notched twice in 17 appearances for the senior side, most recently in a World Cup qualifier against Wales last March.

The Prospects

While he’s versatile enough to also be fielded in either full-back berth, Lovren looks set to be installed at the heart of the Southampton defence in Pochettino’s first full term in charge. His all-round game has been the subject of much praise, with even Barcelona linked with a possible bid last term – comfortable enough in possession to bring the ball out from the back, Lovren’s impressive distribution, excellent reading of the game and strong aerial presence is set to considerably bolster the Saints’ backline.

Given that only four clubs conceded more than Southampton’s 60 goals against over the course of the previous campaign, it seems likely that their main protagonists will remain in the budget bracket across the Fantasy games. Nathaniel Clyne and Luke Shaw both started last season at 4.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and look set for a small rise to 4.5 – Lovren is likely to come in at the same cost unless Fantasy games are swayed by his big-money move. Unless Pochettino plans further defensive reinforcements, a partnership with Maya Yoshida looks likely and if he can replicate his international scoring form, could be a real budget option for the season ahead.

Furthermore, while their overall record at the back was poor, analysis of the Saints’ last few matches bodes well for their defensive potential next time round. After finally becoming accustomed to Pochettino’s high pressing game following his January arrival, Southampton conceded just nine goals in the final 10 Gameweeks, with their opponents scoring more than a single goal in just one of those matches – a 3-0 home defeat at the hands of West Brom after the hosts were reduced to nine men early on.

Having tightened up at the back as time progressed under Pochettino, then, the Saints’ prospects will only be boosted by Lovren’s arrival. Ironically, though, while his installation could help bring more defensive points Southampton’s way, it may well be that Clyne and Shaw will be the real beneficiaries next time round, with their advanced presence on the flanks supplementing attacking moves from deep. Certainly, Lovren’s international record indicates his eye for goal, though he’ll need to keep his discipline in check in order to possibly thrive.

Spain vs Italy in the Euro U21 final.

Spain & Italy looking strong in the Con Cup. And could well both make the final.

Looking good for both teams for the foreseeable future and WC14.

Worth noting just how many players they have playing in their national leagues and for just a elect number of teams, makes a big difference. Italy only have one player in their current squad playing outside Seria A - reserve keeper Salvatore Sirigu (PSG).

    Oh, and good morning......

Aspas news (or just a rumour?): there may be problems with the Aspas deal from Celta Vigo to Liverpool, you can read more on it below. Basically it says he can be presented and transferred, but it seems as though he may not be allowed to play in official games for Liverpool.

      He's an angry headbutting gremlin!
Liverpool are turning out to be a team filled with players I hate.
The man can play football but so can many others, he's the sort of player who you just know is going to be a pr disaster, maybe not as bad as Suarez but then he's no where near Suarez's level.

Any thought on who the bargain players next season will be? Higher value ones count e.g. Walcott last season.

Surely Jay Rod will have to be one of them? (I think he was pretty nailed on under this manager)

What about Ruiz? Any chance he'll be classed as a midfielder with a sub 6m price tag?

Yaya Toure seems a good shout given that Fernandinho should mean Toure will be pushed further up the pitch.

Oscar had a bit of a rubbish FPL season, lower price for him?

And of course Demel. Anything but a £10m price tag is a bargain for him!

Well i will ignore that last part, but I think mirallas will be a great option.
      Same with Gardner and Coleman.

The thing they all have in common thought is that they where lumped in a reverse oop.
The thing is, if they change category in fpl their price will probably change.

Hmm interesting choice on Mirallas, I can't tell if he'll be consistent or not though. Gardner doesn't seem to have much attacking threat.

That's very true about position categories.

Will be quite interested to see what Aguero will be priced at. Had a pretty average season, but never really got going, so if he's reasonable money I think he could be great value this year. Don't think they'll reclassify Ruiz as a MF (unfortunately). Coutinho could be good value, but they may hammer him on price...

I reckon Aguero will be about 10.0m which makes him a real option. He should return to his first season form this year.

Last season his marriage went down the pan, was injured a lot and the whole Mancini/team dynamic impacted City's performance in general.

If he clicks under Pelligrini, he'll be back in my squad for sure.

Well it really depends on the prices, but obvious candidates off the top of the head would be the likes of Ben Arfa, Aguero, Jay Rod, Coutinho, maybe S.Fletcher if his price does not sneak up. Players with the talent to step up, but have question marks around them. Or in Fletcher's case, just someone forgotten cause of his 2nd half of season.

Ruiz I suspect will remain a forward. Oscar I have reservations whether he will get the regular game-time under Mourinho. Really depends on the formation they go with.

Ben Arfa is a good shout. Fletcher will at the very least will stay at the same price, depend on Di Canio starting up the attack. Sess and Johnson looked much better after he came in as I recall.

Fletcher at 7.0m looks a decent bet and with the likes of Lambert, Benteke, Lukaku, Sturridge and Berbatov most likely to rise past that and the new strikers to the league being unknown quantities, I think he might be a potential bargain as he has a pretty proven goal-scoring record in the league.

True. Although Sturridge is definitely going to be a bargain from the start imo as Liv's main striker. You're right though, he could do really well for £7m.

Hopefully Sturridge picks up from where he left off, my only concern would be that he has only had half a season of regular 1st team football in the league as a striker. He did really well in that time, but its still a limited time frame, ala Cisse and Jelavic from the season before who did really well and got the increased price tags.

Just being a cynical bugger though, he has the talent to be a bargain!

Cisse is still very much a quality striker and still was last season. He just didn't have enough chances and the "right" chances to score the goals he did last season imo.

Sturridge has more or less shown he is great as an individual attacker at Bolton, Chelsea and now Liv. He was only underrated at Chelsea because he played on the wing and was selfish (chose to shoot everytime).

I dropped Demel for Jonny Evans when Demel's starts looked uncertain and Evans appeared nailed on. The very week Evans was dropped and Demel started getting great returns.

So Evans is my biggest villain 👿

Demel was a reverse cult hero for me. Had him for all his 1 & 0pt hauls and didn't when he jammied his way to a 60min sub 6pts. Still he is a very average footballer at best and don't see him in many teams next year, what ever his price.

Obvious villains: Suarez & Terry but more for real life antics than FPL performances.
Hero: Raylor a couple seasons back (but was a villain for many others), Coleman when he was OOP and 4.0m three seasons back was magical. Anyone who is OOP and plays regularly.

I think a god few will get Demel in their team Jafooli. I doubt I'll be one of them. But I wouldn't be surprised to see a10% opening ownership. Depending on price.

£100m divided by 15 = average of £6.67m per player.

£96m divided by 14 = average of £6.85m per player for the rest of your squad

That additional £0.18m makes all the difference! 😉

Yeah I agree. As the 😉 implies, I don't really buy into that argument. I think it's a must to have 15 players who actually get gametime, particularly when the busy part of the season comes round.

Will getting RVP or Bale big a bigger debate for you?

I reckon it'll be RVP for me.......higher price and maybe some really decent options to have instead.

On saying that, I'll be surprised if I don't start with both. % of teams that will do likewise?

I don't think either of those guys will be at Chelsea in September. I think Mourinho will get rid of them, spend big on a Cavani style big-bucks striker and Lukaku will be for cup games, benched for PL.

Really depends on prices, boring to say but...:)

If the prices are "reasonable", say RVP between 13-13.5m and Bale 10.5-11m then id say yes, purely based on that they are proven players who you can reliably armband.

If Bale is 12+ million, then that raises some questions.

Bale started off with scores of 2,2,1 last season and dropped to £9.5m by GW5. The season before I remember RVP started off slowly and also dropped in price. Given the level of investment required to own both of them, there will be a lot of twitchy fingers if either or both start off slowly again.

I might be inclined to go with just one of them at the start and see how things go. Not sure which one though, probably RVP because as Roscola says it's easier to get him out than to get him in.

If he's 4m then I'll give him a go...got a goal in him. Suspect he'll be 4.5m though. Bit pricey for Hull defence though....apologies Hull fans.

Looking at the same mid price mids who did well at the end of last of season is surely a waste of time due to price hikes, form does not transfer over from season to season and new underpriced mids are surely coming in . Conclusion Michu, Coutinho etc are not worth looking at ?

They often go for final points tally. Coutinho as a late comer may escape a mega hike. Michu though will be like Siggy and Dempsey and Ireland and Adams before. Not convinced by him at 9m, or 8.5m even.

Didn't all those players move clubs though, which damaged their prospects? If Michu stays put he'll surely continue scoring goals, just from a higher price.

Coutinho and Siggy were both January signings. Siggy got 102 points in half a season, Coutinho got 70. So I'm hopeful he won't be anywhere close to Siggy's 9m starting price.

Yep, Siggy's haul was off the chart in that short space of time. I can see Coutinho as 8m, 8.5m possibly, but 9m would be absurd.

And yes moving clubs obviously damages prospects, but Michu at 9m even last season, especially during the final half would have been over priced. I also can't see him staying a midfielder. His attraction was he was a bargain and OOP. If I'm playing 8.5m plus for a mid table striker I'd want at least penalties with that.
