Scout Report – Dejan Lovren

Mauricio Pochettino made his first signing of the summer transfer window on Friday by acquiring Dejan Lovren from French outfit Lyon for a fee believed to be in the region of £8.5m. The Croatian international centre-half arrives at St Mary’s on a four-year deal and was reported to have been on the radar of a number of European clubs, with the likes of Tottenham and Inter both rumoured to have shown interest:

Although the Saints boss, along with chairman Nicola Cortese, is working on a number of deals, strengthening his defence was a priority and the Argentine has snapped up Lovren with more than a couple of weeks until pre-season training gets underway. Speaking to the club’s official website, the new boy went on to say:

“I’ve spoken a lot with the Chairman and the coach, and this is a great project. They told me a lot of positive things, and I know the history of the Club. It’s a big club and I’m very happy that I can be a part of it. After three-and-a-half years in France, it was a dream to play in the Premier League. Now the dream has come true. I have it in my mind to do something big, and I see the same thing in the Club. We are a young team, and I am a young player also so I hope I will stay here for a long time.”

The History

A product of the NK Karlovac youth set-up, Lovren was signed by Dinamo Zagreb in 2004. He made his senior debut as a 16-year-old a couple of years later before being loaned out to Croatian club Inter Zaprešić – over back-to-back seasons, he became a first-team regular and scored once over 50 league appearances.

Returning to his parent club for the start of the 2008/09 campaign, Lovren racked up 36 appearances over the next season-and-a-half before being acquired by Lyon midway through the 2009-10 campaign for around €8 million. Over his four years with the Ligue 1 outfit, Lovren gradually established himself as a key figure at the back and registered two goals and a pair of assists over 72 appearances. Last term in particular, though, he had a tendency to fall foul of the referees and was sent off three times – one more than the entire Southampton side over 2012/13.

Lovren has represented his country from Under 17 to Under 21 level on a total of 55 occasions, scoring six times. The centre-half has also notched twice in 17 appearances for the senior side, most recently in a World Cup qualifier against Wales last March.

The Prospects

While he’s versatile enough to also be fielded in either full-back berth, Lovren looks set to be installed at the heart of the Southampton defence in Pochettino’s first full term in charge. His all-round game has been the subject of much praise, with even Barcelona linked with a possible bid last term – comfortable enough in possession to bring the ball out from the back, Lovren’s impressive distribution, excellent reading of the game and strong aerial presence is set to considerably bolster the Saints’ backline.

Given that only four clubs conceded more than Southampton’s 60 goals against over the course of the previous campaign, it seems likely that their main protagonists will remain in the budget bracket across the Fantasy games. Nathaniel Clyne and Luke Shaw both started last season at 4.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and look set for a small rise to 4.5 – Lovren is likely to come in at the same cost unless Fantasy games are swayed by his big-money move. Unless Pochettino plans further defensive reinforcements, a partnership with Maya Yoshida looks likely and if he can replicate his international scoring form, could be a real budget option for the season ahead.

Furthermore, while their overall record at the back was poor, analysis of the Saints’ last few matches bodes well for their defensive potential next time round. After finally becoming accustomed to Pochettino’s high pressing game following his January arrival, Southampton conceded just nine goals in the final 10 Gameweeks, with their opponents scoring more than a single goal in just one of those matches – a 3-0 home defeat at the hands of West Brom after the hosts were reduced to nine men early on.

Having tightened up at the back as time progressed under Pochettino, then, the Saints’ prospects will only be boosted by Lovren’s arrival. Ironically, though, while his installation could help bring more defensive points Southampton’s way, it may well be that Clyne and Shaw will be the real beneficiaries next time round, with their advanced presence on the flanks supplementing attacking moves from deep. Certainly, Lovren’s international record indicates his eye for goal, though he’ll need to keep his discipline in check in order to possibly thrive.

Is working up Team Value worth the effort?

I reckon being 107-8m or above by Xmas, improves your chances enormously. Allows a third/fourth bigger hitter for the run in.

I think it's helpful later on in the season but I don't think it's worth consciously playing the game to increase team value. Best focusing on playing the game each week and hopefully increased value is a bi-product of that.

Agreed Count but reckon it should be more than a hopeful bi-product. Reckon it needs to be done hand-in-hand.

Being around 103-4 around Xmas is normally a significant disadvantage.

Don't worry about that, just try and maximise your points by xmas. That usually involves bringing in form players set to rise anyway.

That's one of the pitfalls of having a high team value: it can blind you to the bargains and make you use price as a guide to points, even when you consciously know it to be false.

Depends how you do it. I went all in for it last year and it was a complete disaster. And I rarely used the extra, last half of the season I always had £5-6m in the bank. As a strategy, it hinges on the big-hitters all being the best options at the same time and there being no bargains to match them. That just wasn't the case last year.

The only thing I'll be doing around TV this year will be making my transfers early to get the lowest prices.

And that Roscola is the big dilemma.

Maybe the question should be re-phrased:

Is working up Team Value worth making early transfers for?

Really is a delicate balance. Making early transfers is something I tend to refrain from doing, but early on in the season I find myself having to do it as players prices move so quickly.

Michu last season was going up 0.3m week on week.

I absolutely think early transfers are worth it. The danger, of course, is a midweek injury. Happens so much less often than people make out. It bit me twice, the season before last, and once last season, costing a hit to correct it each time.

I see early transfers as saving you about £2m over the course of the season. So 4 points per million. That's worth it for me.

Going further for TV (like I did, taking hits for bandwagons and using WC early unnecessarily) is not worth it.

            Agreed. I found myself doing:

GW1-15 - early transfers to catch price rises
GW16-30 - late transfers to ensure starts/miss injuries
GW31-36 - early transfers but can't remember why
GW 37 & 38 - late transfers because no need for early

            roughly of course.....

I think it also depends on who is on your target list. If you've mapped out your transfers for the next couple of weeks, then you know how close you are to not being able to afford them if they're rising in price. If it looks like you might miss out by 0.1 by transferring late, then it's probably better to take the risk of injury and get them early.

I've never been sure about that - only worrying about 0.1m if it affects an immediate, known transfer. What about the unknown future transfers? You might be 0.1m short of them if you leave it late for this week's transfer. Surely it's better to maximise your chances of not being in that situation later?

No sure I've ever carried out a transfer that I've tentatively planned more than 2 or 3 weeks in advance.

My strategy is to max TV through hits early in the season. In 2011/12 season, I ended up at TV of 115m. I was able to comfortably fit in heavy defs, mids, and fwds

Last season, I reached 108 by december, but ended up at only 110 at season end. There were no big price movers like siggy, evans, dempsey, valencia like in the back half of 2011-2012 season. I guess the tv was not a big competitive advantage last season

0-0 is a likely scoreline at least for the first hour by which point Rodrigo, Tello, Immobile are likely to make way for Morata, Munain, Gabbiadini.

Kuyt had one of the all-time great runs of form towards the end of one of his final seasons. It was on a par with Bale's doubledigit extravaganza this season.

A mistake I made last year, after using my first WC, was trying to have a well balanced team.

It resulted in having to many captain options, more often than not choosing the wrong one.

It also meant having benching problems.

This year, I will have Bale & RVP, swap the armband between them & my bench will be dirt cheap rotating defenders.

Leather and imitations of leather, and goods made of these materials and not included in other classes; animal skins, hides; trunks and travelling bags; umbrellas, parasols and walking sticks; whips, harness and saddlery. I see Coutinho is being looked at quite seriously for next season.
While I do have quite a high opinion of the player, I do however have a few hesitations.
Last season we got him for a very low price, and this season I expect him to be between 8 & 9.
Why I think Countinho could be an anti-climax this season.. the reasons are fourfold.

    1. Coutinho came in halfway through the season, only starting to play in February. By the time he established himself in the first team, most teams were taking the foot off the gas and he wasn't playing in overly competitive games.

    2. His only three goals game in a 5-0 hammering of a reserve Swansea side, a consolation vs Southampton and a relagated QPR.

    3. His assists vs Wigan (4-0), against Villa and Fulham.. and 1 in the 6-0 vs Newcastle.

    4. His only 2 games against strong teams vame up against Spurs and Chelsea. He lasted 55 minutes vs Spurs to no effect, and came off at half time vs Chelsea. I think he'll be found out a little in competitive games vs over the Winter period, and will be a bit of a waste of money at 9.0. There must be some reason an average Inter Milan side let him go.

Anyway, I could very well be wrong.

      Interesting topic.

I remember the hype around Cisse last season? He had an amazing season and suffered a huge price hike. If I remember correctly, Newcastle's fixtures were poor at the start of the season so luckily many were spared the disappointment.

Granted, his season wasn't THAT bad, but it certainly wasn't as strong as we thought it would be.

        Yeah, this is my worry.
While I think Coutinho looks to be a tidy player, I worry how he'll do over the first few weeks against players hounding after him for every ball, not being given the space he had at the start of his Liverpool career.
Jelavic is another example of a similar FPL player who floundered in this manner

Cisse is a textbook example of regression to the mean. His shot efficiency was off the chart in 2011/12 - 39 attempts, 21 on target,13 goals and a PPG of 8.1 which not even Bale or RVP could match last season. One goal for every 3 shots attempted was ridiculous and was never sustainable.

Coutinho's stats were nowhere near as astronomical for the half season he played. Therefore even if there is some regression, it will be nowhere near as severe as it was for Cisse.

You could be right about his abilities but I think expectations about his price are bit over the top.

In Siggy's mystical first half-season he got 101 points and then moved to Spurs to be priced at 9m. Coutinho got 70 points and is staying put so I don't think he'll be more than 8m

For a player I didn't expect to get any PL starts he did great, well able for the physical side of the English game which I doubted when he signed. Created lots of opportunities for Suarez and Sturridge with quick feet, vision and some great passes in him. He looks like he'll be well able for a few hard tackles depends now on a good preseason and how Aspas, potentially, gels with him upfront in Sturridge early season absence and Suarez's exit.

£8.5m for a poorly-rated Croatian CB? It sounds like big clubs USED to interested in him, I don't think that should be an indication of current ability, just look at Freddy Adu.

Either Ponchettino knows something we don't and has pulled off a real coup, or it's another case of a recently promoted club splashing the cash on overrated player because they can't attract the best.

I think he's supposed to be very good though
This season he struggled to find form after being sent off and never really got going again but his stats are fantastic.
I think Southampton are probably taking a gamble and trying to get a quality defender on the cheap. Think the price is actually 6.8 million, I could be mistaken though.

Teams less likely to sit back when they're at home against arsenal.
It's when we don't score at home that the whole staduim (players/fans/staff) just start losing it.
