Wayne Rooney could yet face a three-match ban for the clash with Wigan’s James McCarthy in yesterday’s 4-0 win.

The much-publicised incident saw Wigan awarded a free-kick for the collision between Rooney and McCarthy, with referee Mark Clattenburg claiming that the “challenge” was nothing more than “a coming together”.

Given that Clattenburg acknowledged the incident by awarding the free-kick, Rooney could escape without further FA sanctions, despite replays showing that the United striker led with his elbow. The same replays appeared to show that Clattenburg was watching the ball at the point Rooney and McCarthy collided; should Clattenburg claim that he saw the clash but missed the use of the elbow, the FA would be free to take matters further.

Today’s articles even claim that, if Clattenburg’s report allows the FA to investigate the incident, a three-match ban could be pushed through quickly under the new fast-track process; that would prevent Rooney from facing Chelsea in the league on Tuesday night.

Given that FA regulations state that charges and appeals are required to take place “within three working days” – this would seem somewhat unlikely.

We will hear plenty more on Rooney and “Elbowgate” from the media over the next 24-hours. Clattenburg’s report and a likely statement from the FA will be the crucial developments however.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

That was beyond hilarious. I can't wait to see how abused Chesney will be on twitter. Awful awful awful stuff. From Koscielny too of course.

Big congratulations to Birmingham. Great achievement.

happened on Tuesday, so it hits the papers on Sunday to make sure Rooney's elbow doesn't make the front page.

            Paranoid much?

They are both bell ends. And when did an elbow in a sports game make the front page of a paper.

Which leads to the obvious remark - you regard The Sun as a paper?

Fabregas and RVP should learn a thing or two from Roger Johnson and man up a bit. He took a knock and played on. With the same problem either of them two would take a month off.

Crazy comment Cheggers. Do you think Fabregas and RVP miss all these games just because they want to?

Fabregas definately does. I swear there is absolutely nothing wrong with him except a very slight hamstring strain, which other players would play with.

you cant play with hamstring strain (slight or otherwise)

its not the same as a knock you can run off

I think you're normally a sensible poster but I don't agree the slightest with this.

They're injury prone and it's their by far biggest downsides as players, I think they'd give everything to be able to play more games.

The league is far more important to Arsenal, no point leaving RVP on to let him provoke it.

Anyway, Birmingham had David Murphy on the bench, someone who has been very poor when he's played whereas Arsenal had a capable replacement in Chamakh, and Bentdner was there too..
